'Voodoo curse' teacher struck off for threatening to drown pupil...

A teacher who threatened to place a special needs pupil under a voodoo curse as a form of punishment and called another "Pepsi Max" has been banned from the classroom.

Roslyn Holloway, who taught at the Lord Silkin Trust School in Telford, Shrops, threatened to use the bizarre ritual to drown the unnamed student if he didn’t stop misbehaving in class.

In a series of other incidents, the special educational needs teacher tore the hair out of a pupil’s skull after he did not stop talking in class while she also engaged in sexual-based conversation with another.

A General Teaching Council panel was told that she struck another different boy on the forehead with the heel of her hand in the school corridor, referred to him as an "idiot" in front of his classmates and threatened to bang his head on the table.

Holloway, who taught students aged 13 at the school from September 2003 until her suspension in January last year, also racially abused other pupils by calling them "black boy", "Pepsi Max" and "ginge" during class.  Full story...

Preventing teenage prostitution in Mali...

Prostitution is not a respectable profession in Mali, but it is a flourishing one, with poverty pushing many women, even girls as young as 12, into selling their charms.

A Swiss woman and two Malians run an organisation to help sex workers with the many problems they face, including their health and the care of their children.

“Here, the woman’s sexual pleasure doesn’t count for much, and as a result she thinks of sex as an economic transaction,” Sylvia SangarĂ© Mollet told swissinfo.ch.

(...)

She doesn’t mince her words: people hide behind Islam, they go to the mosque, but 90 per cent frequent prostitutes and of the remaining ten per cent, three-quarters are unfaithful.

According to F.T., the majority of Malian women convert their charms into money –servants, schoolgirls and even married women, when their husbands don’t give them enough money to buy nice clothes.

“In Mali people marry for social reasons, not for love,” she added. Full story...

The police state abolishes the trial in America...

Several years ago, the police entered the office of a young professor at a reputable university and arrested him for an online crime. They took the professor away, booked him, and then offered him a deal: admit guilt and get off easy. The professor said to the few people to whom he was permitted to speak that this was crazy because he was innocent. His lawyer warned him: fight this and you could get life; admit guilt and you will get a suspended sentence. He took the deal. It was a trick. Now he languishes in jail, his life wrecked as far into the future as he can see.

This doesn’t happen in America, does it? Yes, it does. Not only that, it is increasingly the norm. Those raised on a steady diet of courtroom television shows believe that they are true to the way justice is meted out. This is completely naive. Trials in federal criminal cases are rare. Nine in ten cases are settled in pleas like the above case. Only 3 percent of the cases go to trial. Among those that go to trial, the defendant wins once in every 212 times.

What this means is that there is no way out for the accused. The prosecutors have all the power. Not even the judge has discretion because lawmakers have mostly taken that liberality away in the name of cracking down on crime. This happened all through the 1980s and 1990s, and the prosecutorial dictatorship has entrenched itself to become the norm since 2001. For the last ten years, the police state has had free rein. Story of a young girl crippled by a vaccine (video)

Although advances in clean water, nutrition and sanitation rendered infectious disease statistically irrelevant by 1955, drug companies have continued to market toxic vaccine schedules, forcing informed parents to choose between the risk of crippling their children with vaccines or losing their careers and children to foster care.

As OMSJ reported here and here, pertussis (whooping cough) vaccines are currently being pushed even though the vaccine is more likely to cause significant injury or death than the actual disease it allegedly fights.

For example, pertussis killed 17 Americans in 2000 - the same year that vaccines killed or seriously injured 14,153 Americans. But despite these facts, television and print media that rely on millions of dollars in pharmaceutical advertising rarely report vaccine injuries.

This week, New Zealand station TVZN provided a rare glimpse of one of the world’s millions of victims of vaccine injury - a young girl who was unnecessarily crippled by a vaccination. Video...

13-year-old Saudi girl turns into a ... boy!!!

A girls school in Saudi Arabia has decided to move one of its students to a boys school not because of new gender-mixing system in the Gulf kingdom. The girl has just converted into a boy.

Uhud, 13, had felt persistent cramps in her abdomen and in one week, the pain just disappeared to give way to male organs. Uhud’s father was stunned.

A truck driver was on Monday killed allegedly by Road Transport Office (RTO) staffers after he refused to pay bribe during a vehicle checking drive in Naubatpur locality in Sayyadraza area here, police said.

Anant Lal Gupta (50), a native of Kaushambi district, was allegedly beaten to death at around 5 AM by some members of the RTO staff, Superintendent of Police Shalabh Mathur, said.

India imposes text message limit...

The telecoms regulator in India has put a cap on the number of text messages which can be sent from a mobile phone.

Under the new rules, no one will be able to send more than 100 texts in a day, officials say.

The ruling is expected to be a big relief for millions of mobile phone users who have to deal with dozens of unsolicited text messages every days.

Subscribers can register their numbers with the "national do not call" list by sending a message to 1909.

India has made several attempts in the past to rein in the pesky tele-marketing firms who bombard mobile phone users with unwanted commercial messages and calls. Full story...

Vote for Saudi women no guarantee of rights...

Saudi Arabia must take immediate steps to end all discrimination against women in the kingdom, Amnesty International said today following moves to give women the right to vote.

King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia announced on Sunday that women will have the right to vote and run in municipal elections, the kingdom’s only public poll, from 2015 and be appointed to the Shura Council, a body that advises the monarchy.

However, under Saudi Arabia’s repressive laws, a woman is unable to travel, engage in paid work or higher education, or marry without the permission of a male guardian.

“It is a welcome, albeit limited, step along the long road towards gender equality in Saudi Arabia, and a testament to the long struggle of women’s rights activists there,” said Philip Luther, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa.

“It is, however, much overdue and does not go nearly far enough.” Full story...

Libya conflict may cost UK £1.75bn...

The true cost of the UK's involvement in the Libya conflict could be as high as £1.75bn – almost seven times more than government estimates, according to a new study. Research by a respected defence analyst suggests that the government has given a misleading picture of the costs of supporting the military operation, now in its seventh month, leading to demands for a proper spending breakdown.

Although Muammar Gaddafi's regime has crumbled in recent weeks, RAF airstrikes against forces remaining loyal to him have continued at an exceptionally high rate, depleting stockpiles of expensive precision weapons the Ministry of Defence will want to replace. That will add to the overall bill, which is still rising and which the Treasury has promised to meet from its special reserves.

Concern over funding for the operation has been mounting as government departments, including the MoD, have to cope with deep spending cuts because of the fragility of the economy. Full story...

Donkey to run for mayor in Bulgarian city!!!

A real donkey is a candidate for Mayor of Bulgaria’s Black Sea city of Varna in the October 23 local elections.

Marko, aka the Donkey is nominated by a marginal Bulgarian political party called “Society for New Bulgaria”, which presented its candidate to the media in Varna on Wednesday, BGNES reported.

According to the party, the Donkey is “the major competitor” of incumbent Varna Mayor Kiril Yordanov for the position. Yordanov, widely viewed as an establishment candidate, formerly a candidate of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, has recently changed sides, and is now running as a nominee of the ruling center-right party GERB.

The Donkey will lead a “positive campaign aimed at demonstrating that there no difference between him and incumbent Mayor Kiril Yordanov, when it comes to obeying the orders of the master, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov,” the party members said.

“But there are also several major differences. Unlike the other mayor candidates and politicians, the Donkey has a strong character, doesn’t steal, doesn’t lie, and gets work done,” explained Angel Dyankov, head of the campaign headquarters of the Society for New Bulgaria party, as cited by Darik Radio. Christian girl in Pakistan accused of blashphemy for spelling error...

It may have been a mere misplaced dot that led to accusations of blasphemy against a Christian eighth-grader, whose miniscule error led to her expulsion from school and uproar amongst local religious leaders.

Faryal Bhatti, a student at the Sir Syed Girls High School in Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) colony Havelian, erroneously misspelt a word in an Urdu exam while answering a question on a poem written in praise of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). The word in question was ‘laanat’ instead of ‘naat’ – an easy error for a child to make, as the written versions of the words are similar.

According to the school administration and religious leaders who took great exception to the hapless student’s mistake, the error is ‘serious’ enough to fall within the realm of blasphemy, Saturday. Full story...

Did the BBC lie about the mass grave and the 1,200 bodies found in Libya?

In a truly stunning display of dishonesty, the BBC has reported, citing no evidence to back its claim, that a mass grave containing over 1,200 bodies has been found in Tripoli’s Abu Salim prison complex. The BBC attempts to tie this ‘finding’ to the equally concocted ‘Abu Salim prison massacre’, as it claims that the bodies are those of the inmates supposedly killed in 1996.

In a piece posted today after a NTC news conference, the BBC uses the headline: “More than 1,200 bodies found in Tripoli mass grave“. Categorically, absolutely, unequivocally, this is an out-and-out lie; 1,200 bodies have not been found. Not a single body has been found. In fact, no excavation has been performed, and no more than ‘several bone fragments’ have been discovered, according to the NTC. Full story...

Lemonade raids? Farm stands and local power...

In New Hampshire, who should regulate children’s lemonade stands? The correct answer is: No one. But common sense does not always prevail, at the local or state level.

Legislators will consider a bill next year that would return to the state the power to regulate farm stands. The Department of Health and Human Services wants the authority because farm stands now sell milk, cheese, jams and other perishable items that could get contaminated if improperly processed or kept at the wrong temperature.

At a House Commerce and Consumer Affairs subcommittee meeting this week, Rep. Donna Mauro, R-Windham, asked the representative from HHS if any of these items sold at a New Hampshire farm stand have ever made people sick. The answer: Not to the HHS representative’s knowledge, New Hampshire Business Review reported. Full story...

Anti-corruption officers in Malaysia arrested for robbery...

Three Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission officers (MACC), including an assistant commissioner have been arrested for allegedly robbing a money changer of US$300,000 (RM900,000) inside the satellite building at KL International Airport (KLIA).

The three, said to be attached to the Putrajaya special operations division, were arrested on Tuesday by Sepang police following a report lodged by the money changer that he was robbed by them on Sept 15.

In a statement, MACC confirmed the arrests, saying that the three had been suspended and stripped of their investigation powers.

Sources familiar with the investigations said the three went to KLIA to investigate alleged money laundering by several money changers involving millions of ringgit. Full story...

Tony Blair's six secret visits to Col Gaddafi...

Tony Blair’s close relationship to Colonel Muammar Gaddafi has come under fresh scrutiny after it emerged he had six private meetings with the dictator in the three years after he left Downing Street.

Five of those meetings took place in a 14-month period before the release of Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, the Lockerbie bomber.

Is the window closing on Israel?

In June 1967, with ex-Vice President Richard Nixon, this writer toured an Israeli military hospital full of wounded Egyptian soldiers.

An Israeli officer told us that in the hospital was an Egyptian officer he had captured in the 1956 Sinai campaign, and that he had asked the Egyptian: "We have fought three times now, and three times you have been defeated. Why do you keep fighting us?"

The Egyptian replied, "You may have defeated us three times, and you may defeat us 11 times. But the 12th time we win."

From that Six-Day War, wise Israelis took away two lessons.

First, they had to remain alert and strong enough to defeat all their neighbors at once. Second, the more important struggle was that they must win the acceptance of the Arab peoples to survive in an Arab sea.

The Israelis were not alert in 1973 when Egypt launched the attack of Yom Kippur that sent their army reeling along the Suez Canal. Full story...

The night the lights went out in Georgia...

I used to think that the US was a deeply religious country; so much so that its theocratic fundamentalism distorted every aspect of its crazed political agenda. Well, that last part is still true. But no one could engage in the kind of rampage of sadistic, destructive behavior in which our nation is engaged without the belief that there is no accounting, no consequence--in short, that there is no hell.

When the state of Georgia murdered Troy Davis on Wednesday, it brought condemnation from around the world. This act of state-sanctioned murder also brought into focus the death grip of moral certainty which now has a stranglehold on the US, even in the face of a world which increasingly sees it as morally bankrupt. But a society as thoroughly racist as the US is just as thoroughly determined, perhaps paradoxically--and perhaps not--to deny, ignore and deflect criticism that would raise any doubt, lest the festering sore of its legacy be provoked and proceed to sepsis.

Like a cornered liar or a thief with a guilty conscience, the righteous executioners must continue to see themsevles as upholding justice, democracy, human rights--whatever the good guys do--even when, no especially when, their crazed and horrific actions bring disastrous consequences for those around them. It is no surprise, then, that Barack Obama thought it inappropriate to intervene in the Davis case while simultaneously trying vigorously to blunt the effort for Palestinian self-determination. Nor could he or any in the elitosphere be expected to see the irony of his disinterest in Georgia's killing a black man while he crowed to the UN about "liberating" Libya, his much vaunted and bombastic rhetoric empty except for the contempt it showed for the Libyan people, the black segment of which is now at the mercy of the rapist racists of the TNC while Obama and his Euromercenary allies gladhand each other and twist the arm of any who dare disagree. Zimbabwe: The good, the bad and the downright ugly...

(...)

In between the ‘good’ and the bad came the absurd, just to bring us down to earth. First came the story of the four men apprehended by police in Harare. The police forgot to handcuff their captives and then left them unattended in a police car whose engine was running, while they chased after another suspect. The four suspects put the car in gear and drove away, chased by the Police in a second car which proceeded to run out of fuel before the men could be re-arrested. The Herald newspaper described the escape as “the conclusion of an otherwise highly-successful police operation.”

(...)

The downright ‘ugly’ this week came with more reports of Zanu PF youths taking over council properties, car parks, markets, bus and taxi ranks in Harare where they are intimidating people, extorting bribes and using violence against people who report them to the police. Unbelievably the co Home Affairs Minister, Theresa Makone, whose ministry is in charge of the Police, was quoted in the press as saying there was chaos. Sikhs in Europe protest airport turban harassment...

Thousands of Sikhs will gather in London today to protest against harassment they say they experience at European airports.

The demonstration, in Parliament Square at noon, will be held simultaneously with others in four other capitals to protest against what Sikhs describe as intimidation and disrespect of their faith at European airports.

They say in recent months there have been growing problems at airports for Sikhs travelling from the UK being asked to remove their turbans despite successfully passing through security scanners.

The campaign is being coordinated by the Sikh Channel, a cable TV station based in Birmingham and London which broadcasts to an international audience.

Abinash Singh and his wife Balraj, from Hayes, west London, recently appeared on the channel describing their experience at an Italian airport where officials forced the removal of his turban. Full story...

It could soon become a crime to have a third child in India's Kerala state...

This is going to be a tough code of conduct. You can be imprisoned for impregnating your own wife. Worst, you could be branded as a `legally disqualified person'.

This will be a reality if the Kerala Women's Code Bill 2011, submitted to the chief minister by a 12-member committee with Justice V R Krishna Iyer in the chair, is implemented in its letter and spirit.

In a bid to redefine Draconian, the Commission on Rights and Welfare of Women and Children feels that nothing lesser than a fine of Rs 10,000 or three months simple' imprisonment deserves to be slapped on the expectant father of a third child. The recommendation is part of the measures intended to encourage population planning for well-being and children's development.

The Kerala Women's Code Bill 2011 maintains that violation of family norms will be deemed a legal disqualification and parents will not be eligible to receive any benefits from government. It insists on that religious and political outfits should not be allowed to discourage population planning and any such effort on their part should be censured by the governor. Full story...

Singapore Formula 1 Grand Prix not everyone's cup of tea...

The only thing as inescapable as Singapore's enervating humidity is its gridlocked traffic on grand prix weekend. Brake lights are omnipresent, taxis display red occupied signs and road cones direct the flow into a one-way labyrinth.

But while today sees Singapore host its fourth annual Formula One race, patience is wearing thin for residents affected by the upheaval involved in the temporary construction of the city's Marina Bay Street Circuit.

"I am a taxi driver, so for me it's a pain," said Chee Yeung, sitting in his stationary car yesterday afternoon en route to the Swissotel Stamford, located in the heart of the metropolis.

"There are too many diversions and one-way roads. It's a real headache."

Rather than experiencing a spike in customers, Yeung said that his business is negatively affected because it takes so long to get anywhere. Full story...

Police crack down as Wall Street protests spread...

New York police accused of heavy-handed tactics.

The anti-capitalist protests that have become something of a fixture in Lower Manhattan over the past week or so have taken on a distinctly ugly turn.

Police have been accused of heavy-handed tactics after making 80 arrests on Saturday when protesters marched uptown from their makeshift camp in a private park in the financial district.

Footage has emerged on YouTube showing stocky police officers coralling a group of young female protesters and then spraying them with mace, despite being surrounded and apparently posing threats of only the verbal kind.

NYPD officers strung orange netting across the streets to trap groups of protesters, a tactic described by some of them as "kettling" – a term more commonly used by critics of a similar tactic deployed by police in London to contain potentially violent demonstrations there. More + video...

Beijing beggar turns out to be millionaire with 4 cars & several houses!!!

A netizen disclosed on the popular Chinese forum Mop.com that a beggar in Beijing's commercial center Xidan was actually a millionaire who owns several properties and four cars, causing a sensation on the Internet.

Other netizens replied on the post that they saw this beggar many times with his frantic way of begging - kneeling on the ground and continuously kowtowing to get people's sympathy and money while an old woman who appears to be seriously ill lies beside him.

The fraud was also found at Dongsishitiao Subway Station in Beijing. A netizen named Budangxiaobing said an old woman with gray hair was lying on the ground with a boy kowtowing, then suddenly jumped up and ran away because chengguan, or urban management officers, were coming.

The chengguan in charge of Xidan area said the man was found begging on the street several times and he was persuaded to leave. But later he kept evading the officers, escaping every time the chengguan patrols got close. Full story...

'At least 40' killed in Yemen street battles...

Government forces in Yemen have launched fierce attacks on rival troops and protesters, reportedly killing at least 40 people.

Soldiers loyal to the country's president sprayed rebel fighters with mortar shells and heavy gunfire during street battles on Saturday.

They reportedly used rooftop snipers to pick off unarmed protesters fleeing in panic.

President Ali Abdullah Saleh returned to the country on Friday after receiving emergency medical treatment in Saudi Arabia following an assassination attempt earlier this year. Full story...

Saudi royal family connected to 9/11 hijackers?

(...)

As reported in the Herald, phone records documented communication, dating back more than a year, that connected a Saudi family then living in a house near Sarasota, Florida, with the alleged plot leader, Mohammed Atta, and his hijack pilots—as well as to eleven of the other hijackers. In addition, records from the guard house at the gated community tied Atta’s vehicle and his accomplice Ziad Jarrah to actual visits to the house. Although requiring further investigation, this information suggests that the house may have functioned as an operational base for the hijackers.

According to interviews and records examined by The Herald, Anoud and Abdulazzi al-Hiijjii and their young twins abruptly departed their home in Sarasota only days before September 11, 2001 and traveled to Arlington, Virginia, where they stayed briefly at another house owned by Anoud’s father, Esam Ghazzawi.

Then, still well before 9/11, the entire group, now including the father, flew to London and on to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The Sarasota house was sold in 2003, as was apenthouse apartment in another DC, suburb, Rosslyn, Virginia. The Ghazzawis do not seem to have set foot again in the United States. Full story...

Hitman falls in love with intended victim, fakes her death with ketchup...

It sounds like the script to a late- night movie being shown on a foreign satellite TV channel.

Suspicious wife hires hitman to bump off love rival, only the would-be killer falls in love at first sight with intended victim.

They then fake her assassination using liberal sploshes of ketchup and a machete under an armpit.

But after running away their plot is foiled – when the angry wife sees them together days later.

All three characters are now being investigated by police. As chief Marconi Lima said: ‘In eight years of policing, I’ve never heard anything like it.’ More + photos...

Race hatred against Africans clouds Libya's democratic ambitions...

For the rebels who toppled Muammar Gaddafi, the new Libyan era has ushered in unbounded political freedom and deep personal joy. For Dijmon, a 25-year-old Nigerian labourer in the newly captured capital, it brought fear.

The rebels' elation at victory has in some places turned into rage at people like Dijmon, whose dark skins identified them with Gaddafi's foreign soldiers of fortune even if they had nothing to do with the former leader.

"There was shooting all around the car wash where I worked," he recalled of the day he fled his home in Tripoli. "Then the boys from the neighborhood came and attacked me with hammers."

The treatment of African migrants and dark-skinned Libyans is an early test of the new rulers' vows to build a democratic state, which their European and U.S. backers feel would justify their intervention against Gaddafi on humanitarian grounds.

Race and skin colour were already dividing lines for Libyans, and as in other north African Arab states, many people have a dismissive attitude toward black Africans. Full story...

The Beatles would have supported Ron Paul...

My local Starbucks has been on a Beatles craze lately. For the past two weeks, albums such as "Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band" and "Magical Mystery Tour" have been on heavy rotation. This got me to thinking; if the Beatles were still together today, which candidate would they support to be the United States president? The answer is quite obvious: Congressman Ron Paul.

Time and time again, whenever there is a top 100 ranking for "greatest rock and roll band," "greatest album," or "most influential musical artist," the Beatles consistently come out on top. As Eric Olson of MSNBC puts it, "The Beatles are unquestionably the best and most important band in rock history." While you may agree or disagree on the musical talent of the Beatles, their influence on culture during their heyday was tremendous.

Barry Manilow, the famous soft rock crooner responsible for hits such as "Mandy," recently endorsed Ron Paul’s candidacy. Just a week ago, singing legend Tony Bennett had these particularly candid remarks on the Howard Stern show: Full story...
