The Queen is 'of LIMITED intelligence’ and Royals are ‘like a VIRUS', says Crown creator...

THE Queen is a ‘woman of limited intelligence’ and the Royal Family is ‘like a mutating virus’ says the creator of the widely popular series The Crown.

Peter Morgan, who also wrote The Queen and the play The Audience has blasted the Royal Family and stated that his success may stem from his unique view on the monarchy.

He said: "Maybe it's because I am an outsider — both my parents were refugees.

"If you had told me I would be doing this, I would have told you it was mad, hallucinogenic conjecture.

“I wouldn't have guessed there would be anything more to say about this countryside woman of limited intelligence who would have much preferred looking after her dogs and breeding horses to being queen. Full story...

Alexa, are you safe for my kids?

Earlier this month, the toy-giant Mattel announced it had pulled the plug on plans to sell an interactive gadget for children.

The device, called Aristotle, looked similar to a baby monitor with a camera. Critics called it creepy.

Powered by artificial intelligence, Aristotle could get to know your child — at least that was how the device was being pitched.

"Aristotle is designed to comfort, entertain, teach and assist," according to a company release issued in January.

It was designed to "displace essential parenting functions, like soothing a crying baby or reading a bedtime story," says Josh Golin, executive director of the advocacy group Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood. "So that the children would form an attachment to it." Full story...

Singapore opens new, high-tech airport terminal...

Singapore's Changi Airport opened a cutting-edge terminal Tuesday with a fully automated check-in system including facial scanning and computerised baggage drop points, but some passengers struggled with the new technology.

Terminal 4, built at a cost of Sg$985 million (US$723 million), will have an annual capacity of 16 million people and is aimed at coping with an expected increase in passenger numbers through one of Asia's top travel hubs.

It is packed with new technology, meaning passengers should in theory be able to check in and board without having to talk to airport staff.

On its first day of operations, more than 100 passengers arrived in the morning to take the inaugural service out, a Cathay Pacific flight to Hong Kong. Full story...

Hardline Hindu nationalists campaign against Taj Mahal...

Times are tough for India’s monument to love. Air pollution is turning its marble surface yellow. Restoration work is obscuring its famous minarets. Tens of millions of tourists still flock to Agra each year, but numbers are reportedly waning.

Critics of the Taj Mahal are also growing increasingly bold. In past months, religious nationalists in the Hindu-majority country have stepped up a campaign to push the four-century-old Mughal monument to the margins of Indian history. One legislator recently kicked up a national storm when he labelled the tomb “a blot”.

Resentment at the fact the country’s most recognisable monument was built by a Muslim emperor has always existed on the fringes of the Hindu right. But those fringes have never been so powerful.

Attacks on the monument, a lifeline for its home state of Uttar Pradesh, have grown so loud that last week the state chief minister – himself a critic of the Taj – was forced into “a day-long exercise in damage control”, one newspaper said. Full story...

Hollywood sex abuse is a century old, Charlie Chaplin raped kids and he’s hailed as a hero...

As the curtain gets pulled back and the predators in Hollywood scatter like cockroaches, every new finding leads to more questions. As the Harvey Weinstein scandal snowballed into Hollywood pedogate, Americans are finding out that children have long been the prey of Tinseltown’s elite. But how far back does this depraved madness go? According to many horrifying cases over the 20th century, the answer to that question is at least 100 years.

Hollywood’s proclivity for underage sex dates back ages—if he were alive, you could just ask Charlie Chaplin.

Chaplin, the man George Bernard Shaw called “the only true genius motion pictures ever produced” had a depraved affinity for children. Only because of his status and money did this Hollywood legend avoid being locked up.

Chaplin’s first underage victim was Mildred Harris. While it is unclear as to when their relationship began, at the ripe young age of 16, Harris gave birth to Chaplin’s child. To avoid being prosecuted for statutory rape, Chaplin married Harris—a trend he would use the rest of his life. Full story...

Saudi poisonous gas behind Yemen's cholera epidemic...

A high-ranking Yemeni military official says Saudi Arabia’s massive bombing campaign with poison gas is to blame for the humanitarian crisis and cholera epidemic in the conflict-plagued Arabian Peninsula country.

Yemen's army spokesman Brigadier General Sharaf Luqman said on Sunday that Saudi Arabia is the main culprit for the current cholera epidemic among Yemen's vulnerable population as Saudi fighter jets continue to spread biological agents in the air, which subsequently contaminate water supply systems.

Luqman further described Yemen’s cholera outbreak as a “bio-terrorism plot” hatched by the United States, Saudi Arabia and the Zionist regime of Israel.

He stressed that the outbreak of highly contagious diseases, especially cholera, is directly related to the Saudi regime’s aerial bombardment campaign.

The senior Yemeni military official went on to say that Saudi warplanes have on occasions released poisonous gases, which mix with the surrounding air, come down in the form of rain and cause groundwater pollution at last. Full story...

Gondolier despairs as tourists spend ride glaring at phones instead of Venice’s splendour...

Taking a gondola ride through the canals of Venice is something most people can only dream of, and it doesn’t come cheap.

But marvelling at the city’s enchanting beauty and history along the way wasn’t foremost on the minds of a group of four tourists, who were filmed by a despondent gondolier glued to their smartphones during their ride.

They might have been letting their social media followers know all about their wonderful experience, but it didn’t go down well with the gondolier, who shared the clip on Facebook, sarcastically commenting:

“A fantastic ride. The customers are very happy, they're enjoying the beauty of the city, they appreciate it a lot. They've taken lots of photos, made comments and said they will soon return to this wonderful city.” Full story...

Singapore is the least stressful city in Asia: study...

Contrary to the opinion of the very people slaving away in the cold, merciless economic machine that is Singapore, the Little Red Dot is not one of the most stressful cities in the world. In fact, it’s the least stressful Asian city, according to a study carried out by European on-demand laundry and dry cleaning service Zipjet. No, really.

In fact, the country’s ranked way below the top tier, sitting pretty at number 109 out of the 150 cities in the ranking. According to Zipjet’s study, the title for the most stressful city in the world goes to Baghdad, in Iraq. Because, you know, ISIS.

In fact, the top tier of the list is populated by African and Middle-Eastern nations with the likes of Kabul (#2), Lagos (#3), Cairo (#5) and Dhaka (#7). Our Southeast Asian neighbors Manila claims the title as the 10th-most stressful city, while fellow ASEAN members fared a wee bit better with Jakarta sitting at number 19; Kuala Lumpur at number 41; Bangkok at number 47; Ho Chi Minh at 45. Non-smokers get six days extra paid leave to make up for smokers' cigarette breaks at Japanese firm...

A Japanese company is granting non-smoking employees an extra six days of paid holidays a year after they complained that they were working more than staff who took time off for cigarette breaks.

Tokyo-based marketing firm Piala Inc. only introduced the non-smokers' perk in September, but employees have been quick to take advantage.

"One of our non-smoking staff put a message in the company suggestion box earlier in the year saying that smoking breaks were causing problems", said Hirotaka Matsushima, a spokesman for the company.

"Our CEO saw the comment and agreed, so we are giving non-smokers some extra time off to compensate", Mr Matsushma told The Telegraph.

Resentment among the non-smokers grew because the company's head office is on the 29th floor of an office block in the Ebisu district of Tokyo. Anyone wanting a cigarette had to go to the basement level, with each smoking break lasting around 15 minutes. Full story...

Taj Mahal in political crossfire over nationalism...

The Taj Mahal, India’s most popular cultural symbol and its most recognizable icon, called one of the most universally admired masterpieces of the world’s architectural heritage, is caught in a political crossfire that has sucked in politicians, activists and experts of all hues and ideologies and raised troubling questions over the rise of rampant Hindu nationalism.

The controversy began earlier this month when the state government of Uttar Pradesh, where the Taj Mahal is located, released an official 32-page official tourism brochure pointedly leaving out the marble jewel, commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, who reigned from 1628 to 1658, to house the tomb of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Once called “the world’s greatest monument to love,” it is also regarded as India’s best example of Muslim Mughal architecture if not the world’s. The guide highlights numerous landmarks throughout the northern Indian state. Yet the Taj Mahal is missing.

That could have been a bizarre oversight. But the real agenda soon came to light. Uttar Pradesh, like the government in New Delhi, is run by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party and the state’s Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is known for his hard-line political Hinduism. Full story...

“Her Life Stopped When She Was 12” – Another Example of What An HPV Vaccine Injury Looks Like...

Here is the picture of Chloe Brookes-Holder, who was a happy and healthy pre-teen. She danced almost daily, hoping to make it her career one day; she hiked and led an active lifestyle. That all changed after her second dose of an HPV vaccine. After taking the vaccine she started to notice unusual symptoms, which later transformed into a never-ending cycle of debilitating chronic health issues, like many others before and after her. You can view her current medical conditions and her story here.

Below is another story that comes from Ireland.

”Why did the HSE not give out that leaflet? If they had given out that patient information leaflet I would never have gotten the second injection, because it states on it that if you get sick after the first one, don’t get the second one.” —Fiona, HPV infected teen, 16, Ireland

If you have a young daughter (or son for that matter) who is soon to have the HPV vaccine, I highly recommend you watch this video (below), made by the Irish organization ‘Regret,’ which was named after a group of parents who deeply ‘regret’ their choice to let their daughters have this vaccine without doing their own independent research first. They regret that they relied on trusting the leaflets given to them by their schools and Doctors, and they now realize they missed out on so much vital and concerning information. They are now trying to make others aware of the risks they are taking by allowing their children to have this vaccine. They want you to have genuine informed consent. Full story...

Monsanto attacks scientists after studies show trouble for weedkiller Dicamba...

In a normal year, Kevin Bradley, a professor of weed science at the University of Missouri, would have spent his summer testing new ways to control a troublesome little plant called water hemp.

This has not been a normal year.

"I don't even talk about weed management anymore," Bradley tells me, and he sounds disgusted. "Nobody calls me and ask me those questions. I barely have time to even work with my graduate students. Everything is about dicamba. Every single day."

Dicamba, an old weedkiller that is being used in new ways, has thrust Bradley and a half-dozen other university weed scientists into the unfamiliar role of whistleblower, confronting what they believe are misleading and scientifically unfounded claims by one of the country's biggest seed and pesticide companies: Monsanto.

"It's not comfortable. I'm like anybody else, I don't like [it when] people are unhappy with me," says Mike Owen, a weed specialist at Iowa State University. Then he chuckles. "But sometimes, like John Wayne said, a man's got to do what a man's got to do!" Full story...

World's witnessing a new Gilded Age as billionaires’ wealth swells to $6tn...

The world’s super-rich hold the greatest concentration of wealth since the US Gilded Age at the turn of the 20th century, when families like the Carnegies, Rockefellers and Vanderbilts controlled vast fortunes.

Billionaires increased their combined global wealth by almost a fifth last year to a record $6tn (£4.5tn) – more than twice the GDP of the UK. There are now 1,542 dollar billionaires across the world, after 145 multi-millionaires saw their wealth tick over into nine-zero fortunes last year, according to the UBS / PwC Billionaires report.

Josef Stadler, the lead author of the report and UBS’s head of global ultra high net worth, said his billionaire clients were concerned that growing inequality between rich and poor could lead to a “strike back”.

“We’re at an inflection point,” Stadler said. “Wealth concentration is as high as in 1905, this is something billionaires are concerned about. The problem is the power of interest on interest – that makes big money bigger and, the question is to what extent is that sustainable and at what point will society intervene and strike back?”

Stadler added: “We are now two years into the peak of the second Gilded Age.” Full story...

He hid in the woods for 10 years to escape a bad relationship...

Malcolm Applegate, 62, went to extreme measures to get out of what he describes as a “controlling” relationship.

Applegate left his wife for the woods one day without telling anyone and lived there for five years, staying hidden for a total of 10.

“I camped in thick woodland near Kingston, and made that home for five years while maintaining the gardens at a local community center for the elderly,” says Applegate.

Gardening is what started the problems in his marriage. He says his wife didn’t want him working so many hours and would get upset over any time he spent outside of the house. Full story...

Australia: Almost 90% of edible tomatoes thrown away based on appearance...

Up to 87% of undamaged, edible tomatoes harvested from a commercial Queensland farm were rejected and wasted based on appearance, a study has found, highlighting the problem of food wastage.

Tara McKenzie, an environmental scientist at the University of the Sunshine Coast, said that at every point in the supply chain, edible tomatoes that were slightly odd-shaped or marked or deemed too small or too large were rejected because they didn’t meet market standards for premium, unblemished product. She found between 68.6% and 86.7% of the produce was rejected.

The government estimates food waste costs the Australian economy $20bn each year.

Researchers examined a farm in Bundaberg that had two separate supply chains running to provide tomatoes to markets in Bundaberg and Brisbane. Led by McKenzie, they followed the tomatoes from the point of harvesting through to sorting and handling, transport, and storage. Full story...

Dog days? In Italy, count them like family sick days...

An Italian librarian who says her English setter is her family has won the right from her employer to use family sick leave to care for her ailing pet instead of having to use vacation days.

Italian animal advocacy group LAV says it helped persuade public La Sapienza University to let her use two days' family sick leave to care for 12-year-old Cucciola.

LAV president Gianluca Felicetti says in a statement that anyone who obtains a veterinarian's certificate should enjoy the same benefit, citing Cucciola's case as precedent.

The woman said Cucciola is recovering well from surgery for a breast tumor and a larynx problem. The woman, who is single and has no family help for Cucciola, declined to be identified. She had adopted Cucciola, found abandoned in a Rome park. Source...

“Worse than Big Tobacco”: How Big Pharma fuels the opioid epidemic...

Over a 40-year career, Philadelphia attorney Daniel Berger has obtained millions in settlements for investors and consumers hurt by a rogues’ gallery of corporate wrongdoers, from Exxon to R.J. Reynolds Tobacco. But when it comes to what America’s prescription drug makers have done to drive one of the ghastliest addiction crises in the country’s history, he confesses amazement.

“I used to think that there was nothing more reprehensible than what the tobacco industry did in suppressing what it knew about the adverse effects of an addictive and dangerous product,” says Berger. “But I was wrong. The drug makers are worse than Big Tobacco.”

The U.S. prescription drug industry has opened a new frontier in public havoc, manipulating markets and deceptively marketing opioid drugs that are known to addict and even kill. It’s a national emergency that claims 90 lives per day. Berger lays much of the blame at the feet of companies that have played every dirty trick imaginable to convince doctors to overprescribe medication that can transform fresh-faced teens and mild-mannered adults into zombified junkies.

So how have they gotten away with it? Full story...

Tokyo Olympic stadium worker’s death follows 190 hours of overtime in month...

Japanese labour inspectors have determined that the suicide of a 23-year-old man who worked at Tokyo’s new Olympic stadium construction site stemmed from overwork, and that his family was eligible for government compensation.

Hiroshi Kawahito, a lawyer representing the bereaved family, said that the victim, in charge of quality control of materials at the stadium site, recorded 190 hours of overtime in one month before killing himself in March, according to Japan’s NHK public television. The worker had been in the role for less than a year.

The amount of overtime was way over 80 hours, a threshold for karoshi (death from overwork). Labour officials in Tokyo found the victim, who was not identified by name, also recorded 160 hours of overtime in January.

Work at the new stadium has been intense because of its delayed start. An earlier stadium plan was scrapped due to spiralling costs and an unpopular design. On an average day, about 1,000 workers are at the project led by Taisei Corp, Japan’s construction giant. Full story...

Rohingya recount atrocities: ‘They threw my baby into a fire’

Hundreds of women stood in the river, held at gunpoint, ordered not to move.

A pack of soldiers stepped toward a petite young woman with light brown eyes and delicate cheekbones. Her name was Rajuma, and she was standing chest-high in the water, clutching her baby son, while her village in Myanmar burned down behind her.

“You,” the soldiers said, pointing at her.

She froze.

“You!”

She squeezed her baby tighter.

In the next violent blur of moments, the soldiers clubbed Rajuma in the fire. Full story...

Visiting Singapore? Chinese tourists will be getting pamphlets of dos and don’ts to reinforce “civilized” behaviour...

Chinese tourists arriving at Singapore’s Changi Airport on Friday (September 22) were given a special welcome souvenir – a pamphlet of dos and don’ts that runs nearly 30 pages.

The guidebook covers issues from behavior in public areas to Singapore’s strict traffic rules, including advices such as: “Don’t try to bribe custom officials when you are rejected entry with a valid visa” and a reminder to flush the toilet after use.

During a speech at the airport, Chinese embassy’s charge d’affaires, Fang Xinwen, mentioned that more than 1.5 million visitors arrived in Singapore from mainland China in the first half of the year.

Fang went on to add that with an increasing number of Chinese tourists visiting Singapore, behavioural and personal safety problems have emerged in recent years. Full story...

Chennai: I will continue begging, says Russian tourist...

The Russian tourist, Evgenii Berdnikov, ‘rescued’ by the police and sent to Chennai after he sought alms at a Kancheepuram temple on Tuesday says he would continue begging and has no immediate plans to leave the country. DC found the man with another tourist on South Boag road in T Nagar. It seemed that the foreign national is not in any distress as feared initially

Russian consulate in Chennai had earlier told the media that he had not contacted them and that they will assist him in a proper way if he contacts them.

When asked as to why he has not contacted the Russian consulate in Chennai as suggested by the cops, Evgenii replied that they would be of no help to him and he wants to travel. His visa expires on November 22. Full story...

Brave passengers board last ever Flight 666 to HEL on Friday the 13th...

Fearless flyers will laugh in the face of superstition today when they board the last ever Flight 666 to HEL on Friday the 13th. Travelling on the “unluckiest day of the year” could save you some pounds, but a journey straight to HEL on the 13th hour of the superstitious date is one flight most would probably like to avoid.

Nordic airline Finnair has flown brave passengers from Copenhagen, Denmark, to Helsinki, Finland, on Friday the 13th since 2006.

However, today will be the last time Flight 666 flies to Hel, as the airline has decided to retire the flight number.

“Today will actually be the final time that our AY666 flight flies to HEL,” a spokesperson for the airline said.

“As of October 29, some of our flight numbers in our network will change and our AY666 flight from Copenhagen to Helsinki will change to AY954.

“In 11 years, we’ve flown 21 times the AY666 flight to HEL on Friday the 13th.” Full story...

Weinstein scandal: What it tells us about celebs, politics & Hollywood...

Harvey Weinstein’s sexual harassment scandal isn’t only an indictment of his twisted soul, but of America’s as well.

The story of Weinstein, the uber-powerful film producer, co-founder of Miramax Films and major donor to Democratic politicians, who got fired from his job as co-Chairman of The Weinstein Company after the New York Times ran an article exposing his serial sexual harassment of female employees, is such a perfect storm of corruption, depravity and hypocrisy that it exquisitely encapsulates the moral decay of America.

The New York Times piece revealed that Weinstein has settled at least eight different sexual harassment lawsuits over the years. The article was just the tip of a really grotesque iceberg, for in its wake a plethora of other claims has surfaced.

In a New Yorkerarticle, written, ironically enough, by Ronan Farrow, son of alleged pedophile Woody Allen, even more claims emerged of Weinstein’s predatory behavior. One of the many lowlights from that article includes Italian actress/filmmaker Asia Argento and two other women claiming that Weinstein raped them.

The most famous women among the sea of those claiming harassment at the hands of the movie mogul are Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Ashley Judd, Rose McGowan and Rosanna Arquette. Full story...

Is there an upside to having no social life?

As a freelancer working solo from home, while my housemates head out to work, I justified a very active social life as basic human necessity. Yet when it dawned on me just how much time I was spending socialising, I realised I may be taking it to an extreme.

I calculated that, on average, I was spending 22 hours or more each week on social activities. So, in a bid to see what would happen to my work output, health and wellbeing, I decided to try and cut out my social life entirely.

I knew, at times, I filled my schedule simply out of fear of missing out (FOMO), an inability to say no, but also as a sneaky way to procrastinate or shift focus away from my work.

For one month, I declined all in-person activities with friends: going out for drinks; coffee catch-ups; dinners; parties and non-work related events, to see if it would make me more productive, improve my focus and career prospects. Full story...

In a cashless world you'd better pray the power never goes out...

When Hurricane Maria knocked out power in Puerto Rico, residents there realized they were going to need physical cash — and a lot of it.

Bloomberg reported yesterday that the Fed was forced to fly a planeload of cash to the Island to help avert disaster:

William Dudley, the New York Fed president, put the word out within minutes, and ultimately a jet loaded with an undisclosed amount of cash landed on the stricken island...

[Business executive in Puerto Rico] described corporate clients’ urgent requests for hundreds of thousands in cash to meet payrolls, and the challenge of finding enough armored cars to satisfy endless demand at ATMs. Such were the days after Maria devastated the U.S. territory last month, killing 39 people, crushing buildings and wiping out the island’s energy grid. As early as the day after the storm, the Fed began working to get money onto the island, Full story...

Our protected, predatory oligarchy: dirty secrets, dirty lies...

The revelations coming to light about Hollywood Oligarch Harvey Weinstein perfectly capture the true nature of our status quo: a rotten-to-the-core, predatory, exploitive oligarchy of dirty secrets and dirty lies protected by an army of self-serving sycophants, servile toadies on the make and well-paid legal mercenaries. Predators aren't an aberration of the Establishment; they are the perfection of the Establishment, which protects abusive, exploitive predator-oligarchs lest the feudal injustices of life in America be revealed for all to see.

The predators reckon their aristocratic status in Hollywood/D.C. grants them a feudal-era droit du seigneur (rights of the lord) to take whatever gratifications they desire from any female who has the grave misfortune to enter their malefic orbit.

Anyone who protests or makes efforts to go public is threatened by the oligarch's thugs and discredited/smeared by the oligarch's take-no-prisoners legal mercenaries. (Recall the Clintons' Crisis Management Team tasked with crushing any Bimbo Eruptions, i.e. any eruptions of the truth about Bill's well-known-to-insiders predation of the peasantry.)

The dirty secret is that the oh-so-hypocritical power elites of Hollywood and Washington D.C. circle the wagons to protect One of Their Own from being unmasked. The first weapons of choice in this defense are (as noted above) threats from thugs, discrediting the exploited via the oligarchy's paid goons and lackeys in the mainstream media and dirty lies about what a great and good fellow the oligarch predator is. The last line of defense is a hefty bribe to silence any peasant still standing after the oligarchs' onslaught of threats, smears and lies. Full story...

Duterte orders all EU diplomats to leave Philippines within 24 hours over drug war criticism...

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has told all the European Union diplomats to leave his country over the increasing criticism of the government's bloody war against drugs. Speaking from a newly inaugurated press briefing room in Manila on Thursday (12 October), he told the diplomats not to step on the country's soil again.

"You think that we are a bunch of morons here... The ambassadors of those countries learn a lesson now. Because we can have the diplomatic channels cut tomorrow, you leave my country in 24 hours, all of you," he said during the rambling rant against colonialism in the capital, Manila.

It is still unclear what exactly Duterte, infamous for his foul-mouthed rhetoric against his detractors, meant by expelling those envoys. The firebrand leader is known to make brash remarks against Western leaders in the past only for the presidential palace later to clarify the remarks.

During his tirade, he also attacked European critics who have threatened that the Philippines could expelled from the UN Human Rights Council if the Duterte administration pressed on with the drug war and thousands of extrajudicial killings. Full story...

Since 2016, cops have killed 3 times as many citizens as 4 decades of mass shootings COMBINED...

As Hillary Clinton calls for repealing the second amendment, this behind the scenes deep state puppet master epitomizes what those in favor of gun control really want — only the government can have guns.

Every time a lunatic, who is usually on some form mind-altering pharmaceutical, goes on a shooting rampage, the do-gooders in Washington, with the aid of their citizen flocks, take to the TV and the internet to call for disarming the American people.

The citizens who call for themselves and their neighbors to be disarmed, likely think no deeper than the shallow speeches given by the political blowhards, designed to appeal to emotion only. They do not think of what happens during and after the government attempts to remove guns from society. They also completely ignore the fact that criminals do not obey laws and making guns illegal would have zero effect on criminals possessing guns.

In the perfect statist world in which only the government has guns, we’re told that crime rates would plummet, people wouldn’t be murdered, gun violence would be brought to its knees, and a disarmed heaven on Earth would ensue. But how effective would disarming the citizens actually be at preventing gun violence, while at the same time keeping guns in the hands of government? Full story...

Technology changing travel habits for millions of Chinese...

Phew – you can almost sense the relief on the mainland after China’s ‘Golden Weekend’ officially ended on Sunday.

Over the eight-day-long holiday China enjoyed a tourism boom with an incredible 705 million tourists traveling. That means one in 10 people in the world were on the move over the past week.

Most of the travel was within the country. The China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) says the travelers spent some 583.6 billion yuan (US$88 billion).

And about 6 million people travelled abroad – to 1,155 cities in 88 countries, up nearly 30%, the CNTA said.

The number of mainland Chinese who went overseas was equivalent to the entire population leaving Miami in United States, or Berlin in Germany. Full story...

Retail marijuana is spreading to California, Massachusetts and Maine...

Recreational marijuana sales will launch in three states next year, including the biggest one of all: California.

It's already for sale in five states, but the addition of a legal retail marijuana market in California, with its massive economy and population, will dramatically change the landscape.

California is aiming to open retail marijuana stores by January 1, Massachusetts and Maine plan to open stores next summer.

"We obviously still have a lot to do, but yes, we're going to be ready to go on January 1," said Alex Traverso, spokesman for the Bureau of Cannabis Control in California. "We will be issuing new regulations in November, so we're hard at work on those at the present time." Full story...

South Koreans yawn at nuclear controversy...

Newspaper headlines and grave warnings from TV anchors about nuclear cataclysm in the Korean Peninsula may give travelers pause. But in South Korea, few people discuss the issue openly, including inside the halls of government or on the parliamentary floor.

The North Korean threat tops headlines for sure, but most news reports focus on reactions from Beijing, Moscow, Tokyo and Washington – including Donald Trump suggesting that the US secretary of state is “wasting his time” trying to negotiate with North Korea. For average South Koreans, the news is no more exciting than daily weather reports.

The Kim Jong Un regime may have adopted a new tactic to rouse South Koreans from their somnolent response. Recently, in Seoul’s Sinchon area, where several university campuses are located, students alerted police to retrieve scattered leaflets containing North Korean propaganda threats and boasts of its nuclear weapons power.

“Our hydrogen bombs will wipe out Americans,” asserted one handbill, apparently floated to the south in balloons to target students. Possessing North Korean material is against law and the students didn’t bother to look. Instead, police carted off the materials, probably for incineration. Full story...

Ryanair 'run like a communist regime', says pilot...

Cabin crew reduced to tears, pilots refused days off even for their weddings, and workers "left in exile" thousands of miles from their homes and families.

After budget airline Ryanair was forced to cancel thousands of flights - repeatedly blaming a rostering error rather than an alleged pilot shortage - chief executive Michael O'Leary has written to pilots offering them better pay and conditions.

Here, a long-serving pilot explains why the offer is "too little, too late", and explains why his colleagues are leaving the airline.

Mr O'Leary is partly right to say the cancellations have been caused by problems accommodating pilots' leave, says the pilot.

But this has been exacerbated by unhappy staff seeking new jobs with rival airlines, he believes. Full story...
