An Andhra man was jailed for 8 yrs for rape he didn’t commit - all to protect powerful persons?

In a significant judgement, the Hyderabad High Court acquitted P Satyam Babu, who had spent many years in jail, for the rape and murder of Ayesha Meera, a 17-year-old pharmacy student in Vijayawada.

The murder took place in 2007, and Satyam Babu was convicted by a Vijayawada women's special sessions court in 2010, and sentenced to imprisonment for life.

However, family members of the victim and Satyam Babu had held at the time that he was not guilty, and that he was falsely framed in the case. In spite of the victim's family alleging that a politician's family was involved in the murder, the young man was arrested and made to pay the price for the crime.

The HC has now directed the Andhra Pradesh government to pay Rs 1 lakh compensation to the youth, who spent eight years in jail without any evidence of his involvement. It also ordered action against the police officers, who investigated the case. Full story...

Qatar blocks migrant workers from returning home...

A law making it easier for migrants to change jobs and leave the oil-rich Persian Gulf state - where many of them have been recruited to build soccer stadiums ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup - came into effect in December.

The Qatari government has defended the reforms to replace the "kafala" sponsorship system, which forces foreign workers to seek their employer's consent to change jobs or leave the country - a measure rights groups say leaves workers open to exploitation.

Trade unionists and activists say migrant workers still require an exit permit from the government - and of the 760 or so permit requests made by migrants, more than a quarter have been denied since the law was passed on Dec. 13 last year.

"Qatar's notorious exit permit system remains in place today," said Sharan Burrow, general secretary of International Trade Union Confederation. "The claim by Qatar to the International Labour Organization (ILO) that the exit permit has been abolished is a lie." Full story...

Is Monsanto responsible for a 90 percent drop in the bumblebee population?

The rusty patched bumblebee was, at one time, an ordinary bee with a substantial population across the US. But the once-common bee has fallen prey to human action, and the number of these little pollinators has declined drastically. Over the last two decades, the rusty patched bumblebee population has declined by a staggering 90 percent, rendering them the first bee species to be declared “endangered” in the contiguous United States. On March 21, 2017, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service listed the rusty patched bumblebee as endangered under the Endangered Species Act.

There are many factors in the decline of bee populations: Habitat destruction, disease, pesticides and GMO agriculture are all thought to play a role in the decimation of one of our most needed species of insects. Bees are essential to the pollination of many crops grown for food, and it is doubtful that the loss of these little critters will come without consequences.

The decimation of what was previously a widespread and common bee species shows just how damaging human impact can be. And while many pesticide and herbicide manufacturers, like Monsanto, claim that their products are “bee safe,” it is clear that simply is not the case. Full story...

Doctors and nurses fired after outrageous video shows them mocking naked man on surgery table...

Five medics were fired after an outrageous video was released showing them mocking a man on a surgery table. The group of doctors and nurses were heard laughing raucously as they danced around the patient.

It is believed that a member of the operating team took the footage, which shows nurses and medics in scrubs laughing as they shimmy and dance around the man. The video made its way online and quickly went viral.

Authorities confirmed they have fired five workers in the video, saying the the video breaks 'all health protocols'.

In a statement, clinic bosses said: 'The respect for dignity of every patient is the most important thing in our clinic, therefore we strongly regret the inappropriate behaviour of those who are working as professionals in the health sector, seen in the video recorded in one of our surgery rooms.' ‘Convert to Islam or face murder conviction’ – Pakistani prosecutor reportedly tells Christians...

At least 42 Christians accused of murder in Pakistan were reportedly told they’d be acquitted if they embraced Islam. The accused face the charges after the lynching of two men following twin suicide blasts at churches during Sunday mass.

Prosecutor Syed Anees Shah initially denied telling the accused he could guarantee their acquittal if they converted. However, he later admitted he did, when told by Pakistan’s Express Tribune that the accused had a video recording of what he said.

“He asks them if they embrace Islam, he can guarantee them their acquittal in this case,” rights activist Jospeh Franci, who is involved in the legal proceedings, told the Tribune. Franci claims all of the accused remained silent following the offer, except one who appeared to say he would rather be hanged than embrace Islam.

The trial of the accused is taking place in an anti-terrorism court in Youhanabad, Lahore following the lynching of two men on March 15, 2015. The men were suspected of being involved in the planning of two suicide blasts at churches in Youhanabad on the same day, which left at least 14 people dead. Full story...

Putin blasts Euro-Western culture of Pedophilia and Satanism...

(...)

Putin focused on challenges to Russia’s identity in an international context, of both a foreign policy and moral flavour. Notice the allusion to Satanism which Putin knows full well has, for a long time, been quietly rotting the fabric of America at the core:“

We see many of the Euro-Atlantic countries are actually rejecting their roots, including the Christian values that constitute the basis of Western civilisation. They are denying moral principles and all traditional identities: national, cultural, religious and even sexual. They are implementing policies that equate large families with same-sex partnerships, belief in God with the belief in Satan.3 (emphasis added)

There is probably something lost in translation here in this nugget, however, the fact remains this is an astonishing comment coming from a world leader, when what Westerners and Europeans are accustomed to is a combination of mere propaganda, rosy political rhetoric, and stock “manager speak” which typically reveals nothing (and obscures reality by design).

Putin wasn’t done though, adding:“

The excesses of political correctness have reached the point where people are seriously talking about registering political parties whose aim is to promote paedophilia.4 (emphasis added)

Another bombshell that should reverberate in the numbed minds of “progressive” Europeans and fluoridated Westerners. How many other world leaders have spoken out about the insidious and increasingly widespread normalization and promotion of pedophilia? Did Obama order mass pedophile arrests? Did either Clinton? Did either of the Bushs do or say anything meaningful about the pedophilia epidemic? (No. Have you considered that they may be too heavily invested in keeping it quiet?) Full story...

Male nurse, 71, given an MBE by Prince Charles battered and sexually abused young children in his care at a notorious children's home...

A nurse who was given an MBE by Prince Charles has been exposed as a child abuser who attacked young children at a care home.

Trevor Francis, who once painted himself as an 'upstanding citizen', is soon to be sentenced after being found guilty of two counts of sexual assault against children.

Now 71, Francis, a trained nurse, took over as manager of St Margaret's children's home in Elie, Fife, in 1973, after its previous manager, David Murphy, was found to be a paedophile.

Francis was part of a new regime at the home that should have removed the children from the threat of abuse.

He was given an MBE in the 2012 Queen's Birthday Honours for his services to the community in Aberdour, Fife, where he worked as a station master. Full story...

What to expect now that Internet providers can collect and sell your Web browser history...

After Congress handed President Trump legislation Tuesday that would wipe away landmark privacy protections for Internet users, we received a lot of reader questions about what happens next. The legislation makes it easier for Internet providers, such as AT&T and Verizon, to collect and sell information such as your Web browsing history and app usage. But let's get into the details: You wanted to know whether the measure could help the government dig up dirt on people. You asked how to protect your privacy. And some of you even asked if it would be possible to buy up the online browsing histories of Trump or members of Congress.

To find out, I spoke to a number of privacy and security experts who have been following these issues closely in the public and the private sectors.

Congress voted to keep a set of Internet privacy protections approved in October from taking effect later this year. The rules would have banned Internet providers from collecting, storing, sharing and selling certain types of personal information — such as browsing histories, app usage data, location information and more — without your consent. Trump must still sign the legislation, but he is widely expected to do so. Full story...

Domino’s Pizza to start robot delivery in Germany...

Domino’s Pizza announced that its new delivery robots had begun their “maiden voyage” through Europe, with the first mechanical delivery men rolling through Amsterdam on Wednesday. And customers in neighbouring Germany can expect the super high-tech service next.

“I am monitoring with great interest Domino’s first delivery with a robot in Europe, because we are also already planning the first automated deliveries in Germany,” said Domino’s Germany CEO Karsten Freigang in the announcement.

Handelsblatt reported that the first robots in Germany will be deployed in Hamburg. When this will happen depends on how quickly local authorities grant permission for such vehicles to begin their duties. Domino’s hopes that this will be within the next two months, Handelsblatt states.

The robot delivery system was created in collaboration with European startup Starship Technologies, which was founded by some of Skype’s co-creators. The Swiss national postal service last year also started testing Startship Technologies robots for their own deliveries. Full story...

'You may as well kill us': Human cost of India's meat 'ban'

"I have no money since my shop shut two weeks ago. I don't know how to feed my children and aging parents. Is it because I am a Muslim, or a meat trader?" Shakeel Ahmad, 52, asks.

He is angry with the state's new chief minister, Yogi Adityanath, who opposes the slaughter and consumption of cows, considered sacred by India's Hindu majority.

Authorities have closed many slaughterhouses since Mr Adityanath's BJP party won the state elections earlier in the month. Small shops selling goat and chicken have also been forced to shut, despite the slaughter of these animals being legal.

Most butchers are Muslims and many suspect that they are being targeted unfairly. They allege that their businesses are being shut on technicalities. One meat traders association went on strike, alleging harassment by state authorities. Full story...

Aung San Suu Kyi: Myanmar's great hope fails to live up to expectations...

It was never meant to be this way.

The script called for the lead actor, a Nobel prize winner, to seize control of a country, bring peace where there was conflict and prosperity where there was poverty. A nation emerging from years of military dictatorship was to become a beacon of hope not only for its cowed population but also for much of a fractured and turbulent south-east Asia.

But like many political dramas – especially over the past 12 months – the script has not been followed by Myanmar and its de facto leader, Aung San Suu Kyi.

Now, a year since one of the world’s most famous prisoners of conscience came to power in the specially created position of state counsellor, the talk is not of progress.

Instead, it is of drastically escalating ethnic conflicts that have simmered and sporadically exploded for decades; a new Rohingya Muslim insurgency that has prompted an army crackdown some say may amount to crimes against humanity; a rash of online defamation cases that have fostered a panic over freedom of speech; and a repressive legal framework that allowed the generals to jail so many still being in place. And all the while, Aung San Suu Kyi is accused of remaining mostly silent, doggedly avoiding the media. Full story...

Pornhub and YouPorn now turn on encryption by default...

Pornhub, one of the top 100 most visited websites in the world according to Google, has added support for encryption, reports VentureBeat. The popular adult entertainment website will now default to HTTPS to give its users a little more confidentiality when visiting the site. Its sister website, YouPorn, will get the same treatment on April 4th.

The announcement comes just days after Congress successfully voted to reverse an FCC privacy rule that will soon allow internet service providers to buy consumers’ web browsing data (the resolution just needs President Trump’s signature to become final. If you want to know which goobers members of Congress made that possible, here’s a full list.) While HTTPS won’t prevent ISPs from tracking what websites you’ve visited, it does prevent them from seeing what specific section of the website you looked at. In Pornhub’s case, ISPs will still know if you were on Pornhub, but it won’t know what kinds of videos you were watching.

"As one of the most viewed websites in the world, it is our duty to ensure the confidentially and safety of our users," Brad Burns, vice president of YouPorn, said in a press statement. “The transition to HTTPS will go a long way in solidifying our users’ privacy and protecting them against various types of malware. The data on our webpages will now be encrypted, making it significantly harder for third parties to penetrate.”

Pornhub and YouPorn were two of the 11 adult content websites listed on Google’s 100 most visited sites list. As of next Monday, the move to HTTPS means just five out of those 11 adult websites are now encrypted. Source...

India: What’s really driving big push for Aadhaar?

(...)

Much has been made between Aadhaar and the US social security number. But the differences are greater than any similarities. Aadhaar uses fingerprints and eye biometrics to identify the person uniquely. The social security number originated in the years of the Great Depression, when it was used to track the earnings of workers and compute the amount of social security benefits to be credited to their accounts. The US government decided not to collect fingerprints, since “the use of fingerprints was associated in the public mind with criminal activity, making this approach undesirable”, notes the Social Security Administration, And its website states: “The card was never intended to serve as a personal identification document.” Aadhaar is being used as an identifier to link databases, which makes it easy for government officials to gain access to personal user information, such as bank records, education data, health records, and for surveillance of phone calls and data usage. This data was not linked; under Aadhaar it is. Taking this further, the government is thinking of linking the Aadhaar number to mobile phone numbers.

The present government’s rush to push for Aadhaar despite the Supreme Court’s many objections and the misgivings of many critics is in line with its eagerness to push digital money transactions. It is not just an attempt at modernisation, but having greater control and surveillance. As the demonetisation experiment proved it could bring great inconvenience to the public but not necessarily affect the government’s ability to put a spin on it to sway voters. Even more than demonetisation, Aadhaar could be sold as being good for the country since it gives greater control to the government. Government control is one thing. Private profit is another. Nandan Nilekani, in a foreword to a report by investment banker Credit-Suisse, noted that the use of Aadhaar by the financial sector could open up a $600 billion business opportunity. No wonder private companies are rushing to get their hands on the Aadhaar numbers. Full story...

From aspiring pop star to paralysed in just days: Shocking picture of 12-year-old left bed-ridden in hospital after being given controversial HPV vaccine...

Standing proudly as she clutched a microphone and belted out a tune, 12-year-old Mia Blesky dreamed of being a pop star.

However, just days after being videoed she found herself unable to move and just weeks later she was left paralysed from the neck down and in hospital.

Mia's family claim she has suffered an alleged reaction to the controversial HPV vaccine.

However, doctors claim that her problem is psychological - and the only help they've offered the family is to section her.

A harrowing video shows how her health deteriorated rapidly - as she shuffles before lying still in her adapted bed at home and croons softly, unable to move.

It comes after reports in December told of another teenage girl who was left in hospital after having the vaccine to protect her against cervical cancer. Full story...

Romanian 18-year-old girl claims she has sold her virginity for £2 MILLION!!!

A Romanian teenager claims she has sold her virginity to a Hong Kong businessman for £2million.

Despite her family threatening to disown her over the deal, 18-year-old Aleexandra Khefren announced she was selling her virginity last year.

Khefren, an aspiring model from Bucharest, said that she has booked a hotel and is in contact with the businessman, who she was connected with through Cinderella Escorts, a website based in Germany that will take 20 per cent of the £2million bill.

'I wanted to sell my virginity with Cinderella Escorts rather than giving it to a future friend who might have left me anyway,' she told The Star. 'And I think many other girls have the same attitude. Full story...

The failure of Brand Israel...

.More than a decade ago, the Israeli government launched a new strategy that it dubbed “Brand Israel”. This began in 2006 as an effort to improve Israel’s negative image overseas, “by downplaying religion and avoiding any discussion of the conflict with the Palestinians.”

This was no simple effort to increase the number of tourists coming to the country. It was a political propaganda campaign which aimed to staunch the long, slow bleed which has led to Israel’s haemorrhaging of political support caused by its violent and oppressive actions against Palestinian and Lebanese civilians.

Expensive public relations firms were hired and millions of dollars were spent; all, it seems, in vain. Brand Israel has failed.

In January this year it was reported that tourism to Israel has fallen for the third year in a row. This continued the negative trend that started with Israel’s brutal 2014 military offensive against the people of Gaza, during which the Israelis killed more than 2,200 Palestinians, including 550 children. The uncertain future of democracy...

(...)

Trust in political institutions – including the electoral process itself - are at an all-time low. New converts to democracy in Europe and the Middle East are sliding back into authoritarian rule. And populist leaders who are expected to curb certain civil liberties are winning votes. Societies the world over are experiencing a strong backlash to a system of government that has largely been the hallmark of developed nations for generations.

“A lot of focus gets put on places like Russia, the Middle East or China,” says Joan Hoey at the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) in London. “But the problem is here, in the heart of the most mature democracies in the West.”

Hoey's stark assessment is shared by many others. Western states are worrying about the health of democracy for the first time since perhaps the end of World War Two, says Larry Diamond, a political sociologist at Stanford University in California and senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, a think tank that ‘promotes political and economic freedom’. “We’ve not seen anything like this in decades, and we don’t know where it’s heading,” he says. “We don’t know how serious it is.” Full story...

Frenchman handed jail sentence after wife finds him sexually assaulting a chicken!!!

A Frenchman has been given a three-month suspended prison sentence after he was caught red-handed and no doubt red-faced by his wife as he sexually assaulted one of his chickens.
The Normandy man, from the town of Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray, was caught by his wife and daughter sexually assaulting a chicken.

According to the local Normandie Actu website, the mother had had their suspicions the man up to no good after his youngest daughter told them she had already caught him in a compromising position with a chicken.

The mother and eldest daughter then waited until he was alone in the garage in a bid to catch him in the act.

When they walked in they found him with his trousers down engaged in a sexual act with the bird. The shocked mother immediately began to vomit, the court heard. Full story...

Anger as US internet privacy law scrapped...

US internet service providers will soon no longer need consent from users to share browsing history with marketers and other third parties.

On Tuesday the House of Representatives voted to repeal an Obama-era law that demanded ISPs have permission to share personal information - including location data.

Supporters of the move said it would increase competition, but critics said it would have a “chilling effect” on online privacy.

President Donald Trump is expected to sign the order soon.

The repeal was strongly backed by major providers such as Verizon, AT&T and Comcast, who argued that ISPs were being subject to stricter privacy laws than companies like Google or Facebook. Full story...

‘Thank you and goodbye’: Britain, EU begin Brexit process...

Britain and the European Union have begun their historic march toward separation, a process that will reshape Europe and reverberate around the world.

British Prime Minister Theresa May fired the Brexit starting gun on Wednesday, formally invoking the EU exit mechanism and launching a two-year period to negotiate the terms of the breakup. Ms. May told Parliament that leaving the EU offered Britain an opportunity to fashion the country’s future – economically, politically and culturally.

“I want this United Kingdom to emerge from this period of change stronger, fairer, more united and more outward-looking than ever before,” she said. “I want us to be a truly global Britain – the best friend and neighbour to our European partners, but a country that reaches beyond the borders of Europe too.”

For Ms. May, once Britain is unshackled from the EU, it will be free to negotiate its own trade deals and develop into a trading power that can draw on its ties in Europe, North America and Asia. She believes this leverage, along with the country’s status as a nuclear power and its position on the UN Security Council, will give Britain a bold new direction. It’s an ambitious agenda but it has already run up against the realities of negotiating with a much larger counterpart, the EU, which has the upper hand in the talks and is desperate to protect its own interests. Stench in Indian hospital leads to patient eaten by dogs...

A WOMAN who went missing from a hospital in Bhopal has been found — eaten by dogs — after patients complained of an unbearable stench.

The 70-year-old woman disappeared on March 22.

Sanitation workers were called into the Madhya Pradesh public facility after doctors and patients complained of a growing sickly smell.

They found what remained of her body.

Scrapes on the ground indicate a pack of dogs had dragged it some two metres into undergrowth.

“Only her head and some upper body parts are left. The rest has been eaten up by animals,” a local police spokesman said. Full story...

Duterte tops Time poll as EU critics told ‘stick to child porn’

The Filipino people’s “love affair” with their leader “is like a jet plane that's just taken off” and EU critics of President Rodrigo Duterte should ‘stick to child porn’.

That’s according to Philippines Social Welfare Assistant Secretary Lorraine Badoy who defended Duterte’s standing in Time magazine’s Top 100 Men and Women for 2017 survey, where he leads Vladimir Putin, Mark Zuckerberg, Justin Trudeau and Bill Gates. The final 'Time 100' list will be published on April 20.

“Plus 9 out of 10 Filipinos right now approve of him.” She added “Wrap your dim minds around that, you clowns. Nine out of ten.”

Anyone with a “teaspoon of IQ on them” would wait for Duterte to make a “huge error” before trying to topple him, she claimed.

“Then and only then would it be the time to let your cash flow to pay the EU idiots with galls as huge as Goodyear blimps to call for the president's resignation,” she said, adding in Filipino that “those in the EU, just engage in online child pornography. Since that's what you are good at.” Full story...

Doctors gave boy 3 days to live, then his mother secretly gave him cannabis...

Both anecdotal evidence and clinical research are beginning to show the promise of cannabis in treating a variety of health issues. According to one family in the U.K., cannabis helped a dying teenage boy recover fully from complications from leukemia. The family recently appeared on the British talk show, This Morning, to discuss their experience.

Callie Blackwell’s son Deryn had been fighting leukemia followed by Langerhans cell sarcoma for four years — since the age of ten. Following doctors’ fourth and final attempt at a bone marrow transplant, they warned the family it was the last opportunity to save his life.

Though the surgery was successful, Deryn’s mother says he contracted an infection in the hospital. He grew extremely ill, and according to Callie, “He was literally being kept alive by antibiotics. That’s what they told us.” Doctors estimated he had three days to a week left to live following the turbulent aftermath of his transplant.

Deryn says he was ready to give up and had started planning his funeral. “After four years of treatment, it [was] enough,” he told This Morning. Full story...

Orwell rolls in his grave as police roll out unprecedented drone air force to "track anti-social behaviour"

The Devon and Cornwall police force, tasked with the patrol of the largest geographical area in England, are pioneering perpetual drone surveillance by establishing an unprecedented 24-hour drone surveillance of its patrol area set to begin this summer.

The police drones, also identified as “unmanned aerial systems,” have undergone smaller tests last year. Multiple reports state that the drones will mostly be used for locating crime suspects and missing persons as well as surveillance of crime scenes.

Steve Barry, the UK’s National Police Chiefs’ Council spokesman regarding police drones, touted the cost savings of choosing these devices rather than deploying police helicopters; according to a report from The Daily Mail, Barry predicts “forces across Britain would soon be using them as they are cheaper than helicopters and can perform some duties of bobbies on the beat.” The does not specify how deeply these police drones will be able to inspect individuals, including in regards to audio capacity.

The Mail noted that Barry has pondered the possibility of drones replacing some officers and said “there may be an opportunity at some point in the future to rationalise what we need our cops to do because we find drones can do it more effectively and more cost-efficiently.” However, Barry did not indicate that he approves of a reduced police force in favor of the devices, and other officers and experts were quoted in the report as viewing drones as a supplement for police rather than their replacement. What do many lone attackers have in common? Domestic violence...

The reactions to Khalid Masood’s attack last week played out with script-like predictability: rightwing commentators tried desperately to blame the actions of this Kent native on immigration, while the media pored over whatever anecdotes they could find from neighbours and schoolmates. All The Day Today cliches were ticked off: he was “always polite”, he came from “a normal family”, he once “got drunk” as a teenager.

This kind of desperate profiling plays to people’s desire to believe we should be able to spot terrorists. But while rent-a-gobs flail around naming and shaming Kent and drunk teenagers, it is telling how rarely one feature common to many “lone wolf” attackers is called out: a history of domestic abuse.

Before Katie Hopkins gets excited, this isn’t evidence of a misogyny unique to the Muslim culture, or Muslim killers

A relative of Masood’s former wife Farzana Isaq told the Daily Mirror that Isaq had fled her ex-husband in terror after just three months of marriage: “He was very violent towards her, controlling in every aspect of her life – what she wore, where she went, everything.” Full story...

Death at your door: Knock-and-talk police tactics rip a hole in the constitution...

It’s 1:30 a.m., a time when most people are asleep.

Your neighborhood is in darkness, except for a few street lamps. Someone—he doesn’t identify himself and the voice isn’t familiar—is pounding on your front door, demanding that you open up. Your heart begins racing. Your stomach is tied in knots. The adrenaline is pumping through you. You fear that it’s an intruder or worse. You not only fear for your life, but the lives of your loved ones.

The aggressive pounding continues, becoming more jarring with every passing second. Desperate to protect yourself and your loved ones from whatever threat awaits on the other side of that door, you scramble to lay hold of something—anything—that you might use in self-defense. It might be a flashlight, a baseball bat, or that licensed and registered gun you thought you’d never need. You brace for the confrontation, a shaky grip on your weapon, and approach the door cautiously. The pounding continues.

You open the door to find a shadowy figure aiming a gun in your direction. Immediately, you back up and retreat further into your apartment. At the same time, the intruder opens fire, sending a hail of bullets in your direction. Three of the bullets make contact. You die without ever raising your weapon or firing your gun in self-defense. In your final moments, you get a good look at your assailant: it’s the police.

This is what passes for “knock-and-talk” policing in the American police state. Full story...

Indian engineer named Saddam Hussain refused 40 jobs...

An Indian engineer has claimed he has been rejected from 40 jobs because he shares a name with the former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

Saddam Hussain (whose name is spelt slightly differently) has now gone to court to change his name to Sajid, but says he does not blame his grandfather for giving him the dictator's name 25 years ago.

Despite graduating from Tamil Nadu's Norrul Islam University, the marine engineer from Jamshedpur in Kharkhand has said shipping companies have turned him away because of his name.

"People are scared to hire me," he told The Hindustan Times. Full story...

Chinese anger, fears exposed in France after police killing...

Chinese immigrants and China's government are protesting a police killing in Paris that prompted violent street clashes and exposed the fears and frustrations of France's large Asian community.

Protesters gathered Tuesday in northeast Paris for a second day of demonstrations over the fatal shooting of a Chinese man in his apartment, and police launched an internal investigation into a death that took on diplomatic implications.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said China had summoned a representative of the French embassy in Beijing Tuesday and urged French officials to "get to the bottom of the incident as soon as possible."

Chinese authorities "hope that Chinese nationals in France can express their wishes and demands in a reasonable way," Hua said.

Residents and police gave conflicting accounts of what happened before the man was shot to death by police on Sunday evening. Full story...

Fast food diets causing majority of stroke and diabetes deaths across U.S.

Health care specialists have been advising the general public to cut back on fast food consumption for years, and for good reason. Recent data showed that poor dietary habits accounted for nearly half of all cardiometabolic deaths in the U.S. Researchers at the Tufts University in Massachusetts found that there were more than 702,000 cardiometabolic deaths among American adults in 2012. Forty-five percent of these deaths were linked to poor diet, researchers said.

Researchers also noted higher rates of diet-related cardiometabolic deaths in men compared with women. Cardiometabolic deaths associated with poor dietary choices were also more prevalent among people ages 25 to 54 years old. The risk of cardiometabolic deaths were 10% higher in African Americans and Hispanics compared with Caucasians.

Diets high in sodium and processed meats, commonly seen in fast food restaurants, increased the risk of cardiometabolic death, the study showed. On the other hand, the risk of cardiometabolic death remained stable for diets high in whole grain, vegetables, fruits and omega-3 fatty acid. Full story...

Ron Paul: Did the govt spy on Trump? Of course, it spies on all of us...

There was high drama last week when Rep. Devin Nunes announced at the White House that he had seen evidence that the communications of the Donald Trump campaign people, and perhaps even Trump himself, had been “incidentally collected” by the US government.

If true, this means that someone authorized the monitoring of Trump campaign communications using Section 702 of the FISA Act. Could it have been then-President Obama? We don’t know. Could it have been other political enemies looking for something to harm the Trump campaign or presidency? It is possible.

There is much we do not yet know about what happened and there is probably quite a bit we will never know. But we do know several very important things about the government spying on Americans.

First, there is Section 702 itself. The provision was passed in 2008 as part of a package of amendments to the 1978 FISA bill. As with the PATRIOT Act, we were told that we had to give the government more power to spy on us so that it could catch terrorists. We had to give up some of our liberty for promises of more security, we were told. We were also told that the government would only spy on the bad guys and that if we had nothing to hide we should have nothing to fear. Full story...

Crowds attack Africans in India after teen's death...

Hundreds of residents of an Indian city where a teenage boy died of a suspected drug overdose went on a violent rampage against Africans, using steel chairs to attack shoppers in a local shopping centre.

The riots broke out late on Monday after police in Greater Noida, a satellite city of New Delhi, released five African students detained over the youth's death, saying they had no evidence against them.

One television station showed an angry mob hitting a car with sticks, while another showed dozens of attackers using steel chairs to hit shoppers in a mall.

Police said 10 people had been wounded, while India's foreign minister said authorities were investigating the attacks. Full story...

Digital spies in your home (not mine)

(...)

I have no doubt that government agencies are going to use any access that citizens give them to invade their homes. This is free information as far as the government is concerned. They can collect it almost free of charge. They can store it on a permanent basis. They never know when they will use it, but if they want to use it, they will be able to.

As far as the CIA is concerned, it is going to find itself drowning in data. Computers can monitor our informational digits, but bureaucrats have to make decisions about the value of this information to their agencies. The more data they have to survey, the more paralyzed these agencies are going to become. The quality of the data will keep getting better, and the quality of the bureaucrats will keep getting lower. Competent people are not going to spend their lives digging around in the muck of digital data.

The federal government's bureaucrats have an innate desire to play God. One of the attributes of God is omniscience. Every time anyone pursues this goal, he winds up paralyzed. Yet this is basic to most federal government agencies. They feel compelled to gather more data. They don't know what to do with this information. They don't know how to analyze it. They don't know how to take action in terms of it. All they know is that they want more of it. The Internet of Things is going to give them massive quantities of data. Full story...

Ex-cyber security chief says Government is 'using' Westminster attack to grab unnecessary spying powers...

The Ministry of Defence’s former cyber security chief has accused the Government of trying to “use” the devastating Westminster attack to grab unnecessary and intrusive surveillance powers.

Major General Jonathan Shaw said ministers were attempting to “use the moment” to push for security services having more control, despite there being only a weak case for it.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd has turned up the heat on internet firms, saying it is “completely unacceptable” that authorities cannot look at encrypted social media messages of attacker Khalid Masood, but her words come as debate continues over allowing spy agencies further intrusive powers – only last year Parliament granted them sweeping new capabilities.

After Ms Rudd demanded access to encrypted messages on sites like WhatsApp, Major General Shaw said unlocking the data would also allow other parties – like criminals and foreign spies – to access it, and said legislating for such a move would not necessarily make it easier to stop future terror attacks.
