TSA worker caught downloading child porn...

Yet another TSA screener has been exposed as a pervert after police raided the Maryland home of 41-year-old TSA screener Scott Wilson and discovered videos and photos of child pornography contained on over two dozen different storage devices.

“A “forensic preview” of Wilson’s two computers (as well as various storage devices found in a locked safe) revealed a variety of videos and photos “depicting prepubescent females engaged in sexually explicit conduct with adults,” reports The Smoking Gun.

Wilson, who was responsible for screening cargo on commercial flights, has been freed on $250,000 bail after DHS officials found obscene images and videos on 31 separate storage devices. It is not known whether his TSA role included conducting pat downs of children, which the TSA asserts it has discontinued for under-12′s yet are still occurring on a regular basis. Full story...

Maldives closes hundreds of luxury resort spas for being "anti-Islamic"

Maldives ordered hundreds of its luxury resorts to close their spas nearly a week after a protest led by opposition parties demanding a halt to "anti-Islamic" activities, the government said on Friday.

A statement from the president's office said "the government has decided to close massage parlors and spas in the Maldives, following an opposition-led religious protest last week calling for their closure."

An official from the president's office said the tourism ministry notified the resorts on Thursday but hasn't confirmed if the spas have been closed. He spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak on the matter.

The Indian Ocean archipelago with 1,192 tiny coral islands is known for its exquisite resorts. Full story...

The freedom not to obey...

Are we there yet?

No, but we are getting very close.

We are now at the point, I suspect, that our colonial ancestors were in the early 1770s. They were still British subjects, but had begun to question the relationship – the supposed right of the British sovereign to rule them. Within a very short time, they would reject the relationship in toto – on principle – and would become Americans.

I believe we are in roughly the same spot as those soon-to-be-Americans of the early 1770s.

An awakening is taking place. Millions of people are wising up to the fraud that is contained in the sentence, “consent of the governed.” Are learning to reflexively cringe for their soon-to-shorn freedoms whenever a politician utters the word. Have come to understand that the sprawling beast in Washington no more represents them – let alone has the slightest interest in protecting them (let alone respecting their rights) than the ossified oligarchs of parliament represented the colonists or had any interest in protecting anything other than their power and the sacks of loot that always accompany its exercise. Female 'Robin Hood' robs bank and gives money to children...

A woman has been ordered to go under psychiatric review after she robbed a bank to give money to local kids.

Jasmin Rivera attempted to rob a local branch of the Citizens Bank in Boston, telling cashiers she had a gun in her possession.

Police reports state that Ms Rivera gave two notes to the cashier, one of them with the message, 'please put the money in the bag, I have a gun, do not yell' written on it.

The homeless 30-year-old was given $652, according to police, and then proceeded to jump into a taxi, bribing driver Gary Levin with some of the money so he could take her to additional banks around the Roxbury neighbourhood. Full story...

The latest generation of iPhones come equipped with an intelligent software assistant known as Siri that is able to answer a range of questions based on user voice commands.

But one prospective customer was given a rather rude response to a simple question while testing out the new Apple product in Tesco.

Charlie Le Quesne, 12, asked Siri: 'How many people are there in the world?' to which he received the response: 'Shut the f*** up, you ugly t***.'

Staff at the branch of Tesco in Coventry apologised for the product's abusive message and said that pranksters had tampered with the phone's set-up instructions. Full story...

Chavez: Is U.S. behind spate of cancer among Latin American leaders?

A day after officials announced the cancer diagnosis of Argentina's president, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez wondered Wednesday if the United States could be infecting the region's leaders with the illness.

Five current or former Latin American presidents have battled cancer in the past few years, including Chavez himself, who claims to have beaten an unspecified cancer.

Chavez prefaced his remarks at a military event in Caracas by saying, "I don't want to make any reckless accusations," but the Venezuelan president said he was concerned by something he finds "very, very, very strange."

"Would it be strange if (the United States) had developed a technology to induce cancer, and for no one to know it?" he asked. Full story...

Suicides draw attention to bullying in Korea's schools...

A recent spate of student suicides has drawn attention to school bullying, with some cases hushed up to save schools’ reputations, leading victims to distrust their schools and teachers.

Reported cases of bullying at schools sharply increased last year from 5,606 in 2009 to 7,823 last year, although the number had fallen by about 3,000 between 2008 and 2009, according to a national survey.

According to the Teenage Violence Prevention Center, 14,939 students have asked for help with bullying this year. Of them, 520 students considered suicide and 1,392 suffered from depression, the center said.

In one shocking case, a bullied middle school girl was left suffering from severe posttraumatic stress due to bullying last year, according to TVPC on Tuesday. Full story...

Boss pays woman US$ 1,900 ... to watch him masturbate!!!

A 21-YEAR-OLD woman was surprised when someone offered her a RM6,000 job as a personal assistant. A car and all-expenses paid shopping trips were also thrown in.

But what was more shocking was an unusual request by her boss he wanted her to watch him masturbate.

Harian Metro reported that the woman, known only as Rubi, said she was approached by a man while she was about to pay for her parking in Kajang, Selangor, last month.

“The man, who was in his mid-40s, introduced himself as Riduan. He claimed that he owns a company which supplies foreign workers,” Rubi said.

Initially, Riduan offered her a job as a clerk with a salary of RM1,200.

“When I showed interest, he upped the salary to RM6,000 to be his personal assistant. I was told to accompany him for shopping and to sometimes talk to him on the phone. However, he started to act strangely and asked me to watch him masturbate,” she said. Source...

Apple fined $1.2 million in Italy for misleading users...

Italy’s ‘antitrust authority’ Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato (AGCM) has fined Apple €900,000 ($1.2 million) after it was found to be misleading consumers on assistance services and warranties, AFP reports.

The antitrust watchdog issued a statement saying that it had imposed “sanctions of a total of 900,000 euros” on Apple “after it was found responsible for bad commercial practices that harmed consumers.”

Apple was also found to have given “unclear information on payments for additional assistance offered to consumers” and the company had not “fully implemented the two-year guarantee by the producer,” the authority added. Full story...

Swedes' disdain for the euro hits new heights...

Non-euro countries Sweden and Denmark are fonder than ever of their own currencies, the krona and the krone, as the crisis plaguing the eurozone also hurts their economies.

Both members of the European Union, the two Scandinavian countries have refused to adopt the single currency.

For Sweden, the choice appears to have been the right one for now: it posted economic growth of 4.6 percent in the third quarter, compared to just 0.2 percent in the eurozone.

Sahar Gul, 15, was found in the basement of her husband's house in northeastern Baghlan province late on Monday after her parents reported her disappearance to the police.

"She was beaten, her fingernails were removed and her arm was broken," district police chief Fazel Rahman told AFP.

Egyptian tourism down, so man cuts off his penis!!!

An Egyptian newspaper reported that a young man from the city of Luxor in the south cut off his penis and buried in a graveyard after suffering depression as a result of the decline in tourism since the outbreak of popular protests that led to the removal of former President Hosni Mubarak in February.

Most residents of Luxor, about 690 km south of Cairo, work in the tourism trade as it has many of the most famous ancient Egyptian antiquities, including the Temple of Luxor and the Temple of Karnak, in addition to the large number of tombs of kings and queens of the Pharaohs from the era of the Egyptian empire (about 1567-1085 BC.)

The newspaper al-Wafd in the Sunday early edition reported that the man is 35 years old and married and that his psychological state worsened "due to lack of income due to tourism downturn."

The newspaper added that the Luxor International Hospital received the young man with heavy bleeding and they performed surgery, but attempts to re-attach his penis were unsuccessful.   Source...

Sri Lanka: Protest in Jaffna over “disappearances”

Amid police and military threats, about 200 mothers, wives and other relatives of disappeared persons held a protest on December 10 in Jaffna, northern Sri Lanka, to demand information about their loved ones.

Hundreds of Tamils “disappeared” during the 26-year communal war against the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), particularly during the military offensive before its defeat in May 2009. Despite their denials, the military, police and associated paramilitary groups are directly implicated in these abductions and murders.

Such disappearances occurred not only in the North and East, but also in other areas, including Colombo. The security forces turned a blind eye as squads of thugs, often operating from white vans, seized people, mostly Tamils. The victims simply vanished and were likely murdered. These methods were bound up with the government’s police-state measures to silence political opponents and critics. Full story...

The healing powers of the goddess turmeric...

Ancient Indians understood turmeric to be the physical essence of the Divine Mother. Modern science now confirms that it has therapeutic properties relevant to well over 500 health conditions, and may bestow on those who take it, protection from many common causes of suffering.

The author has personally reviewed the majority of 4,000+ biomedical citations on turmeric and its primary polyphenol curcumin, available to view on the National Library of Medicine's bibliographic reference database known as MEDLINE (and searchable through engines like Pubmed.gov), and has been awed by how diverse, powerful and seemingly ideally suited this spice is for addressing the broad range of diseases and/or disease symptoms that commonly afflict our species.

(...)

Our turmeric database on GreenMedInfo.com (and by "our" I mean yours, as well, as this is an open source project) now contains the world's largest archive of biomedical data on the subject of turmeric's medical value, and includes voluminous research on turmeric's potential to prevent and/or treat multi-drug resistance cancers, chronic degenerative conditions, neurological problems, depression, serious infections, as well as hundreds of other diseases. Please share this information with others, especially those who need an "evidence-bridge" connecting ancient healing wisdom with the modern scientific approach. Full story...

Pakistani Christian on death row cooks own meals for fear of being poisoned...

A Pakistani Christian on death row after being convicted of blasphemy has described how she has to cook her own meals for fear of being poisoned in her first interview since being condemned to hang.

The case of Asia Bibi has been taken up by Pakistan's small band of liberal reformers since it was reported by The Daily Telegraph in November last year.

But it has also exposed the power wielded by extremist clerics and the persecution faced by a tiny Christian minority.

Petition to protest ultra-Orthodox discrimination against 7-year-old girl in Israel...

Na'ama, who lives with her religiously observant family in Beit Shemesh, is afraid to walk the 300 meters between home and school because of the violence she has faced from Haredi men who say her clothes are too revealing.

More than 4,000 people say they will attend a march in Beit Shemesh this week to protest the exclusion of women and girls from the public sphere and the increasing Haredization of the city. The day, time and venue of the event have yet to be announced.

A number of times in recent weeks girls and women in Beit Shemesh have been been cursed and spit at, and even had rocks thrown at them, by members of the city's ultra-Orthodox community who claimed their dress was immodest.

A sign put up in the city center under the aegis of the municipality instructs women to use separate sidewalks and "walk quickly, without drawing a crowd and without talking to each other." Full story...

A tsunami of promises by Imran Khan in Karachi. Can he deliver?

Imran Khan’s tsunami after conquering Lahore swept through Karachi on Sunday, where tens of thousands of people assembled at the call of the PTI leader who unfolded his future plans to cleanse the country from rampant corruption and to make it an Islamic social welfare state.

Addressing the mammoth PTI flag-waving near mausoleum of Father of the Nation Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Imran Khan, in his 4-minute speech, decaled that if voted into power he would end the corruption in 90 days and give new policies to provide justice and social empowerment to the people.

India police custody deaths 'top 1,500' in a year: most detainees tortured...

More than 1,500 people have died in official custody in India in the past year, according to data released by the country's Human Rights Commission.

Most of the deaths in prison and police custody - 331 - were in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

Other states where more than 100 people had died in custody were Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Maharashtra.

Rights groups say a large number of such deaths happen because of torture in custody, claims officials reject. Full story...

Why is the US buying $500 million of smallpox vaccines?

The U.S. government has awarded a $433-million contract to pharmaceutical company Siga Technologies for 1.7 million doses of an experimental smallpox drug called ST-246 (Tecovirimat).

In this time of limited resources and heavy budget deficits, the decision to spend nearly half a billion dollars to stockpile a drug of questionable safety and effectiveness, for a strictly theoretical danger, is puzzling -- and that is an extreme understatement.

Siga's ST-246, which reportedly works by blocking the ability of the smallpox viruses to spread to other cells, has been granted "fast-track" status by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Under this accelerated approval process, experimental drugs are brought to market sooner, even though they've only been tested on a small number of people and their effects and safety risks are not clearly understood. Full story...

Largest protest since collapse of Soviet Union rocks Russia...

Russia's leadership was forced to defend its legitimacy yesterday after about 100,000 demonstrators rallied in central Moscow to demand democratic reform and fair elections in the largest wave of popular dissent since the fall of the Soviet Union.

The rally on Moscow's Sakharov Avenue on Saturday was the fourth and by far the biggest of the mass demonstrations provoked by the parliamentary vote held on 4 December. The ruling United Russia party, led by the Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin, held on to a slim majority in parliament in those elections, but the results have been tainted by claims of wholesale fraud.

The demonstrators stood for hours in sub-zero weather on Saturday listening to a line-up of speakers as diverse as the crowd itself, including TV celebrities, writers, musicians, politicians, scientists and a jailed dissident whose video message was broadcast on a giant screen beside the stage. But one of the pressure groups accused of being partly responsible has told Sky News it defends its campaign on behalf of non-Christians and non-believers.

The usual debate over whether it is acceptable to say 'Merry Christmas' or 'Happy Holidays' has exploded into a much wider disagreement this year.

Thousands of people took part in a prayer rally in the city of Athens in Texas after an atheist group took court action to have a nativity scene removed from outside the courthouse. Full story...

Troubled Pakistanis turn to exorcism for help against jinns...

A girl in a long black shirt screams incoherently, banging her head against a wall at a Sufi shrine in the Pakistani city of Karachi. Sania Haneef's family says she is possessed by a demon.

Doctors could not help, so they brought the college student, kicking and screaming, to be exorcised by the spirit of a saint.

The West mostly associates Pakistan with Taliban militants who force women to cover from head to toe, blow up girls' schools and carry out suicide bombings. But Islam in the South Asian nation of 180 million is far more diverse.

Many flock to shrines like the one where Haneef's relatives seek solace in the Sufi strand of Islam abhorred by militants and considered more liberal in its philosophy than other branches followed by Shi'ites and Sunnis. Full story...

Singapore sits moodily atop wealth pole...

LAST month, if Singapore had been a person, it would have stood above the unwashed tableau of Occupy Wall Street (OWS), watching from its penthouse and laughing into its cognac. But it has spent the year being a little down in the mouth, preoccupied with property prices, taxi fares and faulty trains.

This gloom is hard to explain in the grander scheme of things. When OWS's gross simplification of the one per cent trampling on the 99 per cent is contemplated, Singapore is practically part of the world's one per cent.

This is a country where, every single day, 25 people bought either a Mercedes-Benz or a BMW for the first 11 months of the year. In the same period, every four days, someone drove away from the Ferrari showroom with a big smile on his face. (One assumes that, each time, it's a different person.)

When it comes down to it, Singapore can be almost as Wall Street as Wall Street. Last year, 8.5 per cent of New York City's workforce was on the payroll of the finance and insurance industries. Singapore had about 6.4 per cent of its resident population on it, while Hong Kong had 6 per cent. Full story...

Hard-hit Europeans flocking to Switzerland, not really welcomed with open arms...

Tens of thousands of Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and other Europeans have left their homelands this year in search of a new life. Many have come to Switzerland.

As the economic crisis bites hard across Europe, swissinfo.ch collects evidence from its readers about this new exodus and their motives for moving to the alpine nation.

Some 6,200 Italians, 9,800 Portuguese and 2,600 Spaniards arrived in Switzerland in the first eight months of 2011, according to the Federal Migration Office.

“History is repeating itself,” said Sandra on the “Emigration – stories by our readers” forum on swissinfo.ch’s Spanish page. Full story...

Bank of America fined $335m for minority discrimination....

Bank of America's Countrywide Financial business has agreed to pay a record fine of $335m (£214m, 257m euros) to settle discrimination charges.

The US justice department said around 200,000 qualified African-American and Hispanic borrowers were charged with higher rates "solely because of their race or national origin".

Dan Frahm, a Bank of America spokesman, said in a statement that the bank did not practise lending based on race.

BoA bought Countrywide in 2008.

The settlement covers conduct between 2004 and 2008, before the BoA takeover. Full story...

'Don't jog to work you dumb f***!'

Cops mock critically injured jogger as he lay unconscious in road after accident.

He was nearly killed in a horrific roadside accident, and now a jogger is furious at the wise-cracking cops who mocked him as he clung to life.

Lying in a pool of his own blood after being hit by a truck, Seattle man Tim Nelson had blacked out when first responders arrived.

One officer was operating under the mantra of 'to serve and disrespect' as he remarked to a colleague: 'That's why you drive a car.

Young Europeans flock to Argentina for job opportunities...

The newly elected prime minister of Spain, Mariano Rajoy, caused a minor scandal during his electoral campaign earlier this year when he claimed that "1,200 young Spaniards are emigrating to Argentina each month" due to his country's economic crisis.

Rajoy's claim was probably exaggerated, but the mass arrival of young Europeans is nonetheless clearly evident in the streets of Buenos Aires today.

Most of them come from Spain and Italy but some are from Britain.

"There've been evenings in Buenos Aires coming home on the underground where I ride listening to English conversations on the train," says 28-year-old former London stockbroker Jeremy Hanson, who moved here two years ago. "Then I get off at Carranza station and I come up the stairs and there are people ahead of me speaking English and then I'm walking down Campos Avenue to my apartment and there are people walking towards me and as they pass they're English too." French breast implant fears spread around world...

Fears over the safety of breast implants made by a now defunct French firm spread to Australia, South America and across Europe on Thursday as French officials prepared to decide if thousands of women should have their implants surgically removed.

The silicone gel implants, made by a company called Poly Implant Prothese PIP.L that was shut down in 2010, appear to have an unusually high rupture rate and have sparked an investigation in France into possible links to cancer.

About 300,000 PIP implants, used in cosmetic surgery to enhance breast size or replace lost breast tissue, were sold worldwide before PIP went bust last year.

An investigation into PIP found it was using a type of silicone not approved by health authorities but about 10 times cheaper. The industrial-grade silicone PIP is accused of using is an ingredient in anything from computers to cookware. Full story...

Chinese court jails democracy activist Chen Wei for nine years...

A Chinese court has sentenced a veteran democracy activist to nine years' imprisonment for inciting subversion, in the most severe punishment handed down in a crackdown on dissent this year.

Rights activist Chen Wei was convicted over four essays he wrote and published online, said his one of his lawyers, Liang Xiaojun. His wife said all the essays could only be viewed overseas because of firewall's in China's internet systems.

Chen was detained in February amid an expansive government crackdown in response to anonymous online calls urging Chinese to imitate protests in North Africa and the Middle East.

Liang said the trial at a court in the city of Suining in southwestern China lasted about two and a half hours and that the sentence was handed down 30 minutes after the trial concluded. Full story...

Turkey retaliates over French Armenian 'genocide' bill...

The Turkish prime minister has announced measures against France after MPs passed a bill criminalising denial of the 1915-16 Armenian "genocide".

Ankara is recalling its ambassador and freezing political visits as well as joint military projects, including exercises, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.

The bill was passed by the French National Assembly on Thursday and is due to go before the Senate next year.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe has publicly opposed it.

Under the bill, those publicly denying genocide would face a year in jail and a fine of 45,000 euros (£29,000; $58,000). Full story...

Mystery space ball falls out of the sky on Namibia...

A large metallic space ball fell out of the sky on a remote grassland in Namibia, prompting authorities to contact Nasa and the European space agency.

The hollow ball, which has a circumference of 43 inches, was found near a village in the north of Namibia some 480 miles from the capital Windhoek, according to police forensics director Paul Ludik.

Locals had heard several small explosions a few days beforehand, he said.

With a diameter of 14 inches, the ball has a rough surface and appears to consist of "two halves welded together". More + photo...
