Rahul Gandhi, the scion of India’s ruling dynasty, has accused police of raping and murdering scores of farmers who were protesting against the seizure of their land.
Mr Gandhi, whose mother Sonia Gandhi is the current Indian president and who is tipped to be a future leader of India himself, has triggered a political row by claiming that police entered the villages of Bhatta and Parsaul on the outskirts of Delhi and violently put down protests.
“State repression is being used. People are being murdered, quite severe atrocities are taking place there. There is a large pile of ash with dead bodies inside. Everyone in the villages knows it,” Mr Gandhi said.
Between 50 and 100 villagers are missing after a raid on the village on May 7th in which two policemen were killed in a gunfight. “Women have been raped, people have been thrashed, houses have been destroyed,” Mr Gandhi said. More...
