Nigerian football team banned by country's president after poor World Cup performance!!!

The Nigerian national football team has been banned from competitive games for two years by the country's president following their poor performance at the World Cup.

President Goodluck Jonathan forced the hiatus upon the squad to allow it time to "put its house in order", his office said.

Nigeria finished bottom of their group in South Africa with just one point after losing to Argentina and Greece and drawing with South Korea.

But the decision is likely to aggravate football's governing body Fifa which is opposed to politicians interfering with the running of national teams. More...

Pallets of cash flown out of Afghanistan by corrupt offcials...

More than £2bn of cash has been openly flown out of Kabul airport since 2007, raising fears huge sums of British and American aid are being creamed off by corrupt officials.

The sum haemorrhaging from one of the poorest countries in the world has led officials to believe the money is from plundered Western aid projects and security or reconstruction contracts, it has been reported.

Proceeds from the country's rampant opium and heroin businesses also account for part of the sum, which is more than the Afghan government's entire tax revenue. More...

German faces jail for Hitler mobile phone ring tone...

A German man is facing up to six months in prison for having a speech by Adolf Hitler as mobile phone ring tone.

The 54-year-old had the speech - in which the Nazi leader pledged the "destruction of world Jewry" if Germany was "dragged" into war - programmed into his Nokia phone.

Passengers aboard a train in Hamburg heard the ring tone several times during a journey and reported him to police who seized him at the end of his journey.

When he was taken into custody, police also found swastika stickers and photos of Hitler on the telephone with the words "The greatest commander of all time".

He was charged with violating the German constitution, which expressly forbids public displays of the Nazis and all their works. Source...

Airport body scanners 'could give you cancer', warns expert...

Full body scanners at airports could increase your risk of skin cancer, experts warn.

The X-ray machines have been brought in at Manchester, Gatwick and Heathrow.

But scientists say radiation from the scanners has been underestimated and could be particularly risky for children.

They say that the low level beam does deliver a small dose of radiation to the body but because the beam concentrates on the skin - one of the most radiation-sensitive organs of the human body - that dose may be up to 20 times higher than first estimated. More...

YouTube plans to introduce "skippable" ads later this year, senior product manager Baljeet Singh said at a Google press conference in New York Tuesday.

The feature will let users skip the pre-roll ads that are embedded in videos. The video-sharing site will not charge advertisers for the ads that users do not watch.

We know Rwanda is the story that matters. Yet still we turn to Rooney...

(...)

But this challenge cannot fall on journalists alone. The best of the award submissions were about as good as they could be, and still I know the vast bulk of the audience would prefer to read or watch something else.

This is partly a problem of all foreign news. Our curiosity about those far away is finite. As one old-time US hack used to say, "Americans will do anything for Latin America except read about it." But, more deeply, there seems to be a limit to our capacity to absorb human suffering. We know terrible, heartbreaking things are going on all over the world; but to face them, for more than a fleeting glimpse, is more than we can take. This is true of both ends of the market: sure, Sun readers would prefer to read 10 pages on the World Cup than a single story about TB in Africa, but the Guardian's traffic figures suggest our own online readers are much the same.  Late Monday, Facebook shut down the Boycott BP fan page, effectively locking out the page’s more than 700,000 members. After a backlash by users, Facebook reinstated the site this morning. Facebook has not said whether a complaint by BP prompted its decision to terminate the Boycott BP page. “You always knew where you were with Hayek”

I remember seeing him the first time. It was in Biel when it was announced that the two dying watch groups ASUAG and SSIH were going to merge and he would try to rescue them.

Both then, it was the early 1980s, had brands that were household names – Omega and Tissot. He saved them and other ailing brands.

Hayek did not invent the Swatch but he was instrumental in pushing the brand name and, of course, making the group what it is today – the world’s largest watchmaking concern. More...

Demonstrators brought the city centre to a standstill for several hours as they marched through the streets.

Harassed in the streets, public transport, trains, shopping malls and even airports, Indian women have decided to react. In New Delhi, often termed the "rape capital" by national media, nearly 70,000 Indian women have signed up to self-defence courses since 2002. Some of these classes (martial arts, the Israeli army's self-defence method of krav-maga, etc.) are organised by private institutes, others are conducted by public bodies, notably by the New Delhi police, to combat violence against women. Britain, France and Germany use torture intelligence...

Britain, France and Germany use foreign intelligence obtained through torture in the fight against terrorism, a new report from Human Rights Watch said Tuesday.

The use by three heavyweight European powers of information from secret services in countries that routinely rely on torture was damaging the reputation of the entire European Union, said the rights group.

"Berlin, Paris and London should be working to eradicate torture, not relying on foreign torture intelligence," said Judith Sunderland, Western Europe researcher for HRW.

Harper Lee, the recluse who wrote the wonderful "To kill a mockingbird..."

Despite the thick, black sunglasses, there is something familiar about the frail 84-year-old woman as she is helped falteringly towards the lake shore.

A delighted smile flickers across her face as ducks and Canada geese flock round to feed on the scraps of bread brought from the care home where she lives in a modest apartment.

(...)

But according to confidants, many of whom have known her since childhood, what Harper has really found a burden is her enduring sadness about the book’s underlying themes.

They say that while To Kill A Mockingbird is ostensibly a courtroom thriller – in which Scout’s compassionate and principled lawyer father Atticus Finch defends a black man falsely accused of raping a white woman – Harper drew on deeply painful family secrets to create her protagonists. Swatch founder Nicolas Hayek dead at 82...

Nicolas Hayek, the founder of Swatch, the world's largest watchmaker, died Monday of a heart attack at the age of 82.

Hayek had left succession orders at the Swatch Group, where he served as chairman, and business activity had already been handed over to his son in 2003, the Swatch Group said, according to the SDA news agency.

Born in 1928 in Beirut, Hayek became a key figure on the Swiss business scene after he merged watchmakers that were being liquidated and formed Swatch in 1985.

At the time the Swiss horology industry was in crisis, in part because of cheaper competition from Asia.

The company now employs over 24,000 people and has annual sales of over 5 billion dollars.

Hayek himself became known for his cigars, multiple watches, outgoing style and comments on politics and economics. Source

When the Indian army resorts to "fake killings" in Kashmir...

Three men went missing in Indian-administered Kashmir in April.

Nothing extraordinary about that, but some time later their bodies were discovered near the Line of Control (LoC), which separates Indian- and Pakistani-administered Kashmir - a fate which militants trying to cross the border often meet.

But during investigations, the police discovered that the men had been killed in a staged gun battle in a frontier area.

The probe also revealed that a senior officer of the Indian army - a major - had the three men kidnapped by offering them jobs as porters. More...

The Toronto G20 riot fraud: Undercover police engaged in purposeful provocation?

The World Cup and South Africa, the dark side...

Football and squalid shantytowns are no strangers to one another. For many barefoot children playing the game in the dust, their skills with the ball are seen as a way out of poverty. For many others watching, the game offers a short respite from the daily hardships and frustrations of their lives.

So when the players and fans speed along the motorway from the renovated Cape Town airport to their plush hotels, past the squatter settlements where more than a million people live, there is nothing new in this stark juxtaposition of wealth and poverty. What is new is the scale of the returns that the World Cup will generate from ticket sales, television rights and sponsorship, and the scale of the cynicism with which politicians and businessmen exploit the passion of fans.

(...)

The business of football is an incestuous affair. Phillipe Blatter, the nephew of Sepp Blatter, is a major investor in a company called Match Hospitality. This firm booked one third of all available hotel accommodations ahead of the tournament. It planned to let the rooms at 10 times the cost price to the hordes of football fans that were expected.

Why is this 6-year-old on the US "no fly" list?

Alyssa Thomas, 6, is a little girl who is already under the spotlight of the federal government. Her family recently discovered that Alyssa is on the "no fly" list maintained by U.S. Homeland Security.

Dr. Thomas and his wife were made aware of the listing during a recent trip from Cleveland to Minneapolis. The ticket agent at the Continental counter at Hopkins Airport notified the family. Abortion hotline in Pakistan faces violent opposition...

An abortion hotline which has been set up in Pakistan is facing violent opposition. Islamic groups and political parties have condemned the hotline, which was launched yesterday, as "anti-Islamic" and "colonial", even though it will save the lives of thousands of women who die each year in backstreet abortion clinics. They have warned the organisers that they are at risk of reprisals.

The hotline, set up by a collection of women's groups in Pakistan and the Dutch pro-choice group Women on Waves, advises women how to use a drug to induce miscarriage safely and aims to reduce the estimated 890,000 unsafe illegal abortions performed in Pakistan every year. More...

Beggar in India gives alms to those even less fortunate than himself...

A beggar on Saturday proved that charity only needs a big heart rather than deep pockets. Khimjibhai Prajapati, 64 and a beggar in Mehsana for a decade, donated clothes to 11 poor hearing and speech-impaired girls at the Shrimati Kesarbai Kilachand School for the Deaf.

Rich philanthropists have been a more common sight but it was the first time ever that a beggar had walked into the school to share his savings. It was an unusual sight. An unkempt Khimjibhai in tattered, unwashed clothes, limped through the school gates on crutches and placed the brand new clothes in the hands of 11 eager girls. He had used his savings of Rs 3,000 to buy the clothes.

For years people have raved about the beautiful Ukrainian women. Sure, whatever.

FIFA warns French govt: Keep out of football or else...

FIFA is monitoring the fallout in France over Les Bleus’ World Cup failure, warning that it won’t hesitate to suspend the 1998 champions if it discovers government interference with the team.

France President Nicolas Sarkozy has vowed to personally investigate the squad’s meltdown, and met with Prime Minister Francois Fillon and Sports Minister Roselyne Bachelot on Wednesday to discuss ways to reform French soccer.

France was eliminated from the first round of the tournament after going on strike, failing to win a match and having striker Nicolas Anelka thrown off the squad for insulting the coach.  More...

Allow us to drive or we will breastfeed our drivers, threaten Saudi women!!! Wow!

Many were stunned when Saudi cleric Sheik Abdel Mohsen Obeikan recently issued a fatwa, or Islamic ruling, calling on women to give breast milk to their male colleagues or men they come into regular contact with so as to avoid illicit mixing between the sexes.

But a group of Saudi women has taken the controversial decree a step further in a new campaign to gain the right to drive in the ultra-conservative kingdom, media reports say.

If they're not granted the right to drive, the women are threatening to breastfeed their drivers to establish a symbolic maternal bond. More...

What’s the story with... dying bees?

Pottering around the petals with their colourful bustle engaged in a perpetual wiggle, bumble bees are an integral part of the British summer.

Their rapid population decline has been well-documented in recent years but mystery remains about the exact reasons behind it.

Of the 25 species of British bumble bees, three are already extinct and half of the rest are in serious decline. One of the extinct varieties is the short-haired bumble bee, which disappeared in Britain in 2000. At the time, the loss was blamed on the disappearance of wild flowers in Britain’s intensively farmed landscapes.

(...)

Why such concern for the humble bumble bee? As well as being a much-loved part of our natural wildlife, the bottom line is that when it comes to the UK’s crop production, the bumble bee is the linchpin of the operation. Insects such as bees, moths and hover-flies pollinate around one-third of the agricultural crops grown worldwide. Together, the UK’s pollinating insects are essential to a significant chunk of the country’s crop production. If they were all to be wiped out, it would cost the UK economy up to £440m a year in lost crop production – which equates to around 13% of the income from farming. Full story...

Israel "eases" Gaza blockade so that Gazans can starve more slowly...

As Israel this week declared the “easing” of the four-year blockade of Gaza, an official explained the new guiding principle: “Civilian goods for civilian people.” The severe and apparently arbitrary restrictions on foodstuffs entering the enclave – coriander bad, cinnamon good – will finally end, we are told. Gaza’s 1.5 million inhabitants will have all the coriander they want.

This “adjustment”, as the Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu termed it, is aimed solely at damage limitation. With Israel responsible for killing nine civilians aboard a Gaza-bound aid flotilla three weeks ago, the world has finally begun to wonder what purpose the siege serves. Did those nine really need to die to stop coriander, chocolate and children’s toys from reaching Gaza? And, as Israel awaits other flotillas, will more need to be executed to enforce the policy? Swiss man to be caned in Singapore for train graffiti...

A Swiss man pleaded guilty on Friday to vandalism and trespass for spray-painting a Singapore metro train in a stunt for which he is expected to be caned and jailed.

Oliver Fricker, 32, is to be sentenced later for the two crimes, which alarmed Singapore officials because he and a British friend were able to break into a subway system believed to be a potential terrorist target.

Singapore has launched an international hunt for the 29-year-old Briton, Lloyd Dane Alexander, who allegedly planned the act but left the city-state before he could be caught, leaving Fricker to face the consequences alone. More...

"Modern" India where the primitive caste system continues to kill young couples...

In villages across northern India, the most dangerous choice young people could make is one most of us take for granted – choosing their own partner. In the rural hinterlands, the khap panchayats, traditional community organisations, mete out their own forms of justice to "erring" villagers. In recent years, they have ordered the honour killings of young couples for marrying outside their caste, for marrying within their gotra (ancient lineage as defined by Hindu tradition) and even for marrying someone from a neighbouring village. In short, one could invite censure, and usually worse, by marrying anyone against the wishes of their parents and the community patriarchs (for most of the traditional leaders are men). More...

Will Facebook and Twitter be the death of blogs?

ONLINE archaeology can yield surprising results. When John Kelly of Morningside Analytics, a market-research firm, recently pored over data from websites in Indonesia he discovered a “vast field of dead blogs”. Numbering several thousand, they had not been updated since May 2009. Like hastily abandoned cities, they mark the arrival of the Indonesian version of Facebook, the online social network.

Such swathes of digital desert are still rare in the blogosphere. And they should certainly not be taken as evidence that it has started to die. But signs are multiplying that the rate of growth of blogs has slowed in many parts of the world. In some countries growth has even stalled. More...

Malaysia bans anti-govt. political cartoons...

Malaysia banned three works of political cartoons that criticize the government, but one of the artists said Friday he was obligated to highlight issues other cartoonists would not.

The government said the cartoons in two books and a magazine posed a security threat.

Malaysia has banned dozens of publications in recent years, but usually because of sexual content or alleged misrepresentation of Islam, its official religion. But the latest ban is certain to spark complaints that the government is disallowing critical views. More...

Why did a 15-year-old girl steal 44 pairs of underwear from a St. Paul store?
