Nine-year-old Muskaan Ahirwar, a little girl who lives in the Arera Hills slums in Bhopal, is an inspiration to children, and even adults everywhere.

The little girl has come into the limelight recently for a free library she runs for underprivileged children who have an interest in reading and learning.

At a young age, where most children are happy playing in the dirt, Muskaan has dedicated herself to a higher purpose, that of bettering herself and other children for life in the future.

The third-standard student has founded a free library outside her home in Bhopal, and works as a librarian everyday, offering other slum children both books to bury themselves in as well as a place to read in comfort.

A video by Al Jazeera says the girl believes children who want to learn should have a way to do that on their own, without having to rely on school work. Full story...

Borrowers who are having difficulty making their monthly Canada Student Loan payments can apply for help through the Repayment Assistance Plan. Depending on factors such as income and family size, borrowers can get approved for a reduced monthly payment on their Canada Student Loan, or be approved for no monthly payment at all.

This relief is in addition to increased supports for students through the Canada Student Grants. As of August 1, Canada Student Grant amounts have been increased by 50 percent:

• From $2,000 to $3,000 per year for full-time students from low-income families;

• From $800 to $1,200 per year for students from middle-income families; and

‘Stalking is violence, period’: A rejoinder to Khushbu for her defence of film industry...

As a woman, a politician and a senior member of the Tamil film industry, Khushbu has been outspoken on women’s rights. Considering her progressive views on contraception and virginity (which got her into a controversy), we expected her to show some sensitivity and understanding when it came to questions of women’s safety and the role of popular culture in shaping social attitudes towards women.

In fact, when we drafted a petition calling out stalking in Tamil cinema, she was among the first few actors we approached through social media requesting her to support the cause. Of course, we did not hear from her then, but it is very disappointing to see her public defence of stalking in cinema while women around us are being harassed, molested, attacked and killed every day. Her response is not only insensitive and irresponsible, but also lends apparent legitimacy (coming from a woman) to the movie industry’s wilful ignorance and blatant misogyny.

To understand why her response is part of the carefully orchestrated myth in Kollywood that they do not contribute to the perpetuation of violence against women, let us consider her statement in parts.

First of all, she admits that heroes are shown relentlessly pursuing women ‘for love’. It is important to note here that in the movies, the woman concerned is most often shown as unwilling to entertain the hero’s advances, yet the ‘pursuit’ continues. The hero goes on to use what Khushbu apparently sees as “nice and positive ways” to win her love, which in our movies, include threats directed at the woman and her family, harassment in front of her teachers or colleagues, emotional manipulation and blackmail, verbal abuse and “eve-teasing.” None of these antics, which would legally qualify as stalking (under IPC 354D) and harassment (IPC 294, 509), are shown in the movies as offences that result in a conviction or punishment. Movies glorify and reinforce these forms of behaviour as ‘heroic’ traits, never dwelling on their criminality or the unpleasant consequences suffered by the woman. Full story...

In July 2016, the Croydon Advertiser – a 123-year-old newspaper – published two lookalike stories on facing pages. Headlined “13 things you’ll know if you are a Southern rail passenger” and “9 things you didn’t know about Blockbuster” the articles stood out for their striking similarity.

Both articles were an example of an editorial phenomenon more commonly associated with the internet – the “listicle”. A portmanteau of “list” and “article”, listicles are incredibly popular, at the moment, but also controversial. To some, listicles are the inevitable result of cost-cutting – and the listicles below did indeed appear after a newsroom restructure.

Listicles assume the public wants information in quick hits and “prefers mindless fluff and trivia over hard news”. Listicles are far from new – The Ten Commandments anyone? – but traditionally, print journalism has used lists either as a sidebar to other articles or as standalone specials (such as the Sunday Times Rich List). But on sites such as Buzzfeed, such traditional conventions are ignored. Full story...

Scores killed as Saudi bombs rain down on Yemen...

Saudi fighter jets have killed nearly 60 people in their latest airstrikes in Yemen’s western coastal province of Hudaydah.

According to the al-Masirah television network, some 38 people were also injured in the Saturday night attacks, which were carried out on a security building in the city of Zaydiyah.

Local officials said that three separate strikes were launched on the facilities and noted that most of the casualties were prisoners.

Earlier, Saudi jets targeted areas in the southwestern Yemeni provinces of Ta’izz and Sa’ada, killing at least 21 people. Around 16 people were killed in As-Silw district in Ta’izz, and five more were killed in raid in the Bani Sayyah district of Sa’ada province.

Saudi warplanes also bombed the Nihm district in the Sana’a province in west-central Yemen and another location in the Shabwah province in the impoverished country’s south. Full story...

910 rape cases reported in Kerala in first 6 months of 2016...

Despite stringent laws and awareness campaigns, as many as 910 cases of rape have been reported in Kerala in the first six months of this year, giving an indication of continuing atrocities against women in the state.

A total of 7,909 cases of crimes against women were reported across the state upto July, according to state police's crime statistics.

Of them, 2332 were cases of molestation, 190 cases of eve teasing and 78 cases of kidnapping of women besides 910 cases of rape, it said.

The number of rape cases reported last year was 1263, it said.

Expressing concern over the alarming figures, state Women's Commission Chairperson K C Rosakkutty said awareness seminars and classes were not enough to tackle the increasing atrocities against women. Full story...

What does it mean for a nation to exert “influence”? Partly it’s about attitude: the confidence and determination to push hard and long for national objectives. But it’s also about organisation: having the institutions, skills and discipline to turn foreign policy goals into real changes. Taxpayers might think the UK has that in hand, in the form of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) which commands the space between Downing Street and the Treasury. But those grand offices hide a momentous decline over the past four decades.

When I joined the FCO in 1979, the European Economic Community was an odd, distant formation where you dusted off A-level French for inconsequential meetings with bemused French and German embassy colleagues and disconcertingly confident European Commission zealots. Things changed. The legal power exerted by Brussels grew and grew. The EEC transformed into a European Community, then a European Union.

But Brexit offers an extraordinary opportunity to regain our international confidence. The UK is far richer than Russia, our relationships around the world are more sophisticated, we are usually better analysts and we are equal in the UN. Still, between us, who looks and acts like a world power? Who gives the impression of believing power exists, and can be deployed for a national interest? Of having any national interest at all?

Part of the reason for our Brexit vote was a rejection of genteel declinism. Against Remain’s pessimism, the Leave campaign managed to capture the case for optimism and taking risks. So we can take advantage of Brexit only if we make radical changes, above all by uniting the spending of Dfid and the FCO in one Foreign Ministry. That would restore a strong, single foreign policy, uniting political and “development” objectives – and the officials pursuing them. Full story...

It started when a blog was published on the popular blogging platform the Tian Ya Yi Du forum, by a person writing under the pseudonym 'Proud Qiaoba'.

Proud Qiaoba penned a tale that, if we hadn't been able to verify it ourselves, would seem like the plot of a pretty average airport romance novel.

The lead character in Proud Qiaoba's account is a colleague, whom Chinese media have dubbed 'Xiaoli' (not her real name).

Xiaoli, a woman from the city of Shenzhen in southern China, asked each of her 20 current boyfriends to buy her a newly launched iPhone 7. She then sold all of the phones to a mobile phone recycling site called Hui Shou Bao for 115,010 Chinese yuan (about £14,000), and used the money to put down a deposit on a house in the countryside. More than one million children starve as Yemen war rages...

Around 1.5 million children in Yemen are malnourished and half the population lives in hunger, United Nations aid agencies said on Friday, three days after pictures of an emaciated Yemeni teenager sparked headlines around the world.

Yemen's 18-month war has left 370,000 children at risk of severe malnutrition - a condition which needs urgent treatment to prevent a child from dying - the U.N. children's agency UNICEF said at a press briefing in Geneva on Friday.

"It is really a dire situation on the ground. When you see mothers who have little to eat themselves and they see their children slipping away, it just breaks your heart," said World Food Programme (WFP) spokeswoman Bettina Luescher at the briefing.

"It really is shocking and horrible to see this in the 21st century."

Overall, almost half of all children in Yemen are stunted, according to WFP. Stunting is where children are short for their age, and is a sign of chronic malnutrition. Full story...

The German Interior Ministry has drafted a law on video surveillance allowing the installation of automatic facial recognition cameras in public places to tackle rising terrorism threats, local media reported. Critics argue the proposal is nothing but a “placebo.”

A package of massive video surveillance measures proposed by the Interior Ministry was exposed this week by German media.

According to a draft law on “improvement of video surveillance” seen by the Ruhr Nachrichten newspaper, Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere wants facial recognition cameras to monitor privately-run public areas, such as shopping malls, stadiums and car parks.

The bill, expected to be rubber-stamped by the German parliament in November, cites recent terrorist attacks, namely the shooting spree in a Munich mall as well as a bomb attack in Ansbach, Deutsche Welle reported.

De Maiziere’s proposal follows statements by top security officials who warned that Germany’s transportation system, specifically train stations and airports, is vulnerable to lone-wolf attacks while the police and railroad security services are short of proper equipment and manpower. Myanmar’s defacto leader, Aung San Suu Kyi of the National League for Democracy (NDL) political party, has paved her time since coming to power earlier this year with both irony and hypocrisy. She has not only illegally declared herself “leader” of the Southeast Asian state in contravention of its constitution, she has also embarked on an iron-fisted purge of her political opponents identical to the one she fought against as she struggled to seize power to begin with.

During elections earlier this year, Myanmar’s constitution prevented Suu Kyi from holding the nation’s highest office due to her inordinate amount of time overseas, her status of having been married to a foreign, and her children’s dual citizenship. Instead of adhering to the law, her party once in power, simply contrived an entirely new post for her, State Counsellor of Myanmar, which makes her the “defacto leader” of Myanmar.

Another myth built up around Nobel Peace Prize laureate Suu Kyi by the West has been her advocacy for “human rights.” Her advocacy for human rights, however, appears only to extend out to protect only as far as her immediate political allies are concerned. For groups beyond this self-serving political protection, and particularly regarding her political opponents, she and her NDL are just as eager to jail, crush, or kill political opponents as they claimed the ruling military government had been.

In addition to escalating violence targeting the nation’s Rohingya’s population, several activists online have been sent to jail for “insulting” the ruling government and Western-backed media fronts and organizations. Full story...

Within 48 hours, the bemused Brit, who had only around 1,000 Twitter followers, had received several thousand nominations from all over the world, and Lennon’s ballad was a repeat offender.

A Texas A&M student was arrested Wednesday night after authorities said she crashed her vehicle into the back of a parked Bryan police car.

According to the police report, the woman told the officer she was sending a Snapchat picture to her boyfriend just before the crash.

The officer wrote in the report that he had parked his patrol vehicle in the southbound outside lane in the 2500 block of East Villa Maria Road with the rear emergency lights on while he investigated a disturbance call.

The men and their families each took in one of the dogs, bringing them home to Michigan after the weekend-long party.

A gem dealer in India has announced an extraordinarily generous giveaway for his staff to mark the Hindu festival of Diwali, pledging to hand out 1,260 cars and 400 apartments.

Savjibhai Dholakia, head of the diamond trading company Hare Krishna Exports, said the gifts are part of a company policy to enrich his staff, according to Agence France-Presse.

“Our aim is that each employee must have his own home and car in the next five years. So we have decided to gift cars, homes and jewellery to employees,” Dholakia told the news agency.

Dholakia has reportedly been making similar donations to his employees since 2012, and he has said the bonuses were in recognition of their outstanding performance and commitment.

The company, based in India’s gems hub of Surat, also has a loyalty program that will distribute some $7 million to an unknown number of staff from its 5,500-strong workforce, AFP reports. Source...

Top doctors: Chemotherapy one of dozens of procedures shown to 'give no benefit'

Chemotherapy is arguably one of the medical industry's biggest frauds. Perhaps that's why it recently landed on a list of ineffectual treatments drawn up by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AMRC).

The list was created by 11 top specialists, who were each asked to think of five treatments they felt provided little to no patient benefits. And surprise, surprise – chemotherapy was one of them. Doctors from the AMRC said that chemotherapy cannot cure terminal cancer, and may bring unneeded distress in the final months of life. The Guardian reported:

"The treatment is 'by its very nature toxic', the college said. "Therefore, the combination of failing to achieve a response and causing toxicity can 'do more harm than good.'"

As the death toll in Yemen surpasses 10,000, Saudi Arabia, one of the principal parties in the conflict, is poised to be reelected to the UN human rights body. Saudi airstrikes are responsible for the majority of the nearly 4,000 civilian deaths in Yemen.

A secret ballot vote at the UN General Assembly on Friday will select the 14 members of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), or a third of its 47 members. Saudi Arabia, Iraq, China, and Japan are running for the four seats from the Asia-Pacific region, and are all expected to secure seats.

Riyadh’s term at the UNHRC would be the third in a row, and its presence at the body has been increasingly puzzling to human rights groups, given its record of twisting arms at the UN to hush up its rights abuses.

In June, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon publicly admitted that Saudi Arabia threatened to withdraw funding from numerous programs due to an upcoming report on violations of children’s rights. The report would list the Arab kingdom among violators over the toll its military campaign and blockade of Yemen has taken on children. An estimated 35 percent of all the food produced in China is wasted, and the total value of the food Chinese people throw away annually could be worth more than 200 billion yuan ($29.60 billion). Statistics from China's State Administration of Grain and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations suggest that food Chinese people throw away every year could feed 200 million individuals.

To help curb food waste, a shared fridge charity project, that encourages community members to place unwanted items of food in a communal refrigerator to help needy residents was recently launched in Shanghai, according to media reports. The scheme has been introduced at three locations around the city.

The first shared fridge in the city appeared on Xikang Road in Putuo district at the end of September. This fridge was organized by a restaurant owner surnamed Yang, and most of the food items in this fridge came from his restaurant. Full story...

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), facing criticism over its classification of carcinogens, has reportedly been advising its scientific experts not to publish internal research data on its 2015 report on “probably carcinogenic” glyphosate.

The IARC urged its scientists not to publish research documents on its 2015 weedkiller glyphosate review, according to Reuters. The agency told Reuters on Tuesday that it tried to protect the study from “external interference,” as well as protect its intellectual rights, since it was “the sole owner of such materials.”

The scientists had been asked earlier to release all the documentation on the 2015 report under US freedom of information laws.

The groundbreaking review, published in March 2015 by the IARC – a semi-autonomous agency of the World Health Organization (WHO) – labeled the glyphosate herbicide as “probably carcinogenic to humans.” Glyphosate is a key ingredient of Monsanto’s flagship weedkiller well-known under the trade name ‘Roundup.'
