Mumbai: signs of an attempted coup in New Delhi?

Preliminary signs emerging from India’s power center, New Delhi, paint a picture of an unstable situation. Security is already compromised. But a bigger story is taking place in New Delhi, not Mumbai. There are disturbing signs that India, a nuclear-armed nation of a billion people, is witnessing a ‘soft coup’ attempt involving secular rightwing ideologues and Hindu nationalists.

Exploiting the fears of a traumatized nation and a government caught sleeping at the wheel, a core group of rightwing ideologues within India’s military, intelligence and political elite are trying to overthrow Manmohan Singh’s government. The plan apparently is to help the rise of rightwing elements in power and firmly push India in a confrontation with Pakistan and some other countries in the region.  More...

South Korean actress faces jail ... for adultery!!! Oh boy!

South Korean prosecutors have demanded an 18-month jail term for a popular actress who admitted breaking the country's strict laws on adultery.

Ok So-ri had sought to overturn the 50-year old legislation, which carries a maximum jail sentence of two years.

She said it was an infringement of human rights and amounted to revenge.

But in October the constitutional court ruled for the fourth time that adultery must remain a crime, saying it was damaging to social order. More...

India's 9/11: Who was behind the Mumbai attacks?

The Mumbai terror attacks were part of a carefully planned and coordinated operation involving several teams of experienced and trained gunmen.

The operation has the fingerprints of a paramilitary-intelligence operation. According to a Russian counter terrorist expert, the Mumbai terrorists "used the same tactics that Chechen field militants employed in the Northern Caucasus attacks where entire towns were terrorized, with homes and hospitals seized". (Russia Today, November 27, 2008).

The Mumbai attacks are described as " India's 9/11".

The attacks were carried out simultaneously in several locations, within minutes of each other. More...

Suite...

Swiss say okay to State-prescribed heroin...

Swiss voters have backed a change in health policy that would provide prescription heroin to addicts.

Final results from the national referendum showed 68% of voters supported the plan.

The scheme, where addicts inject the drug under medical supervision at a clinic, began in Zurich 14 years ago before spreading across the country.

But in another referendum, the Swiss appear to have rejected the decriminalisation of cannabis.More...

Mumbai and the age of "celebrity terrorism..."

Quite apart from the scores murdered and the hundreds injured, what the Mumbai terrorists really wanted was an exaggerated - and preferably extreme - reaction on the part of governments, the media and public opinion.

In these terms, the attackers received as much attention as they could possibly have hoped for, and the Mumbai outrage can only be described as a very significant terrorist success.

(...)

If so, then Mumbai could represent something rather different in the history of terrorism, and possibly something far more disturbing even than global jihad.

Perhaps we have come to the point where casually self-radicalised, sociopathic individuals can form a loose organisation, acquire sufficient weapons and equipment for a few thousand dollars, make a basic plan of action and indulge in a violent expression of their generalised disaffection and anomie.

(...)

Mumbai attacks: politicians tremble as anger mounts...

A day after the terrorist siege of Mumbai ended claiming over 180 lives, political heads started to roll Sunday with Home Minister Shivraj Patil resigning as the financial hub limped back to normal, dpa reported.

Patil's resignation, which was accepted by the President Pratibha Patil's office, came amid widespread anger over the government's weak stance against terrorism following the brazen attacks by militants.

As Finance Minister P Chidambaram was given additional charge of the home ministry, local news channels reported Manmohan Singh's government may call on top bureaucrats and other ministers to resign.

There was growing public anger that the ruling United Progressive Alliance was unable to stem terrorist attacks and bombings that have hit the country almost every month. More...

Nigerian 419 scams now hitting Paypal...

A VARIANT of the extremely popular Nigerian 419 scam is possible via Paypal, the INQ has discovered. On paper it looks bulletproof but it's still a big con.

The 419 scam is named after the relevant section of the Nigerian Criminal Code and the premise is always the same. Somebody offers to pay money into your account and give you a cut when you send it back.

In truth the whole thing is money laundering but this latest twist – using Paypal – is significant because, on the surface, it looks like there's no catch. More...

Suite...

Mumbai attacks: unanswered questions...

How many terrorists were there? Did they number 20 as Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh told a press conference on Thursday? Or did they number many more? If two or three terrorists attacked the CST, how many terrorists were present at the Taj and Trident?

Did the CST terrorists drop a grenade/explosive device at Dockyard Road on the way to the station? Or was someone else responsible for that act of terror which claimed three lives?

The terrorists are said to have set up control rooms at the Taj and Trident hotels, a Cabinet minister told PTI on Thursday. When were these bookings made? A detailed investigation into the bookings made at both hotels in the months, weeks and days before the attacks may reveal the names of suspicious guests who registered there. More...

Mumbai attacks: the cops who would not shoot back...

The Independent - has revealed how a newspaper photographer took an astonishing picture while hiding
inside a train carriage as gunfire erupted all around him.

Sebastian D'Souza, a picture editor at the Mumbai Mirror, whose offices are just opposite the city's Chhatrapati Shivaji station, heard the gunfire erupt and ran towards the terminus.

(...)

But what angered D'Souza were the masses of armed police hiding in the area who simply refused to shoot back.

"There were armed policemen hiding all around the station but none of them did anything," he said.

"At one point, I ran up to them and told them to use their weapons. I said, 'Shoot them, they're sitting ducks!' but they just didn't shoot back." Full story...

Sarkozy has to live with his voodoo doll!!!

Nicolas Sarkozy is undoubtedly the most trigger happy president in modern French history.

Not in terms of foreign policy - after all, this was the man who single-handedly defused the Russia-Georgia crisis by persuading Putin not to hang his Georgian counterpart's "by the balls."

No, Mr Sarkozy, a trained lawyer, saves his belligerence for the courtroom, with six lawsuits to his name since he was elected last year.

The Congo's OTHER war and, once again, children are its main victims...

A hidden war against Africa's children has broken out in the far north-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, near the frontier with Sudan.

This conflict, which has forced tens of thousands to flee their homes in the last month alone, is entirely separate from Congo's insurgency around the eastern city of Goma.

Ever since its birth in Northern Uganda two decades ago, the LRA has filled its ranks by abducting children. These innocent victims – at least 20,000 of whom have fallen into the LRA's hands – are tortured, brainwashed and turned into soldiers or sexual playthings.

Today, the LRA and its psychotic leader, Joseph Kony, have been driven out of Uganda. But Kony has found refuge in Congo, where he runs a rebel headquarters located in Garamba National Park, a World Heritage Site where central Africa's last white rhinos were once protected.  Full story...

The Chinese and a foreign passport to a new life...

One of China's most famous actresses has been accused of being unpatriotic after becoming a Singaporean citizen.

Some say Gong Li, star of the film Memoirs of a Geisha, has turned her back on her Chinese fans.

But the actress is not the only Chinese citizen to seek another country's passport.

They do it for convenience, to improve job prospects and as a safety net.

Despite China's increasing economic and political power, a Chinese passport is still seen as restrictive by many of its citizens. More...

Prison inmates grow food for the poor!!! Wonderful!

Camp Pugsley, the minimum security state prison camp near Kingsley, generated over 18,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables for local food banks during the 2008 growing season on just 1.3 acres. Swiss vote on radical heroin rules...

Voters in Switzerland go to the polls on Sunday to decide whether to make a controversial heroin prescription programme a permanent, nationwide health policy.

The Swiss government supports the idea but opponents say it encourages drug addiction, and sends the wrong message to young people.

Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s Switzerland had one of the highest rates of heroin addiction in Europe.

Open drug scenes in cities such as Zurich, Basel and Bern were common, with addicts injecting and dealers selling publicly in the streets and parks. More...

A Swiss view of the Mumbai attacks...

The wave of violent attacks across Mumbai are not new to India and can be traced to the country's internal dynamics, Swiss experts say.

However the attackers are sending a different message this week by targeting foreigners for the first time, South Asia expert Gilbert Etienne told swissinfo.

Since Wednesday there have been ten coordinated attacks. Hotels have been under siege, Westerners taken hostage and killed and the central train station turned into a scene of carnage.

The attackers have not precisely spelled out the reasons and aims for the assault. More...

Eye for eye in Iran: man who blinded a woman with acid is to be blinded in his turn...

A court in Iran has ruled that a man who blinded a woman with acid after she spurned his marriage proposals will also be blinded with acid.

The ruling was reported in Iranian newspapers on Thursday.

The punishment is legal under the Islamic Sharia code of qias or equivalence, which allows retribution for violent crimes.

The court also ordered the attacker, 27-year-old Majid Movahedi, to pay compensation to the victim.

The acid attack took place in 2004. The victim, Ameneh Bahrami, went to Spain for surgery to reconstruct her face but efforts to restore her sight failed.

The ruling was a response to her plea to the court in the Iranian capital Tehran for retribution.

"Ever since I was subject to acid being thrown on my face, I have a constant feeling of being in danger," she told the court.

Ms Bahrami also said that Movahedi had also threatened to kill her.

Seven of the Mumbai gunmen came from Britain?

British-born Pakistanis were among the Mumbai terrorists, Indian government sources claimed today, as the death toll rose to at least 150.

As many as seven of the terrorists may have British connections and some could be from Leeds and Bradford where London's July 7 bombers lived, one source said.

Two Britons were among eight gunmen being held, according to Mumbai's chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. At least nine others are reportedly dead.

The eight arrested were captured by commandos after they stormed two hotels and a Jewish centre to free hostages today.

One security official said: 'There is growing concern about British involvement in the attacks.' More + photos...

China: man executed for ant-breeding hoax...

China has executed a businessman convicted of bilking thousands of investors out of $416 million in a bogus ant-breeding scheme, state media reported Thursday.

The official Xinhua News Agency said Wang Zhendong, who was found guilty of fraud and sentenced to death in February last year, was executed in north China's Liaoning province on Wednesday.

The death penalty is used broadly in China. Though usually reserved for violent crimes, it is also applied for nonviolent offenses that involve large sums of money or if they are seen to threaten social order. More...

Czech President Vaclav Klaus is a global warming skeptic...

Czech President Vaclav Klaus, one of the most prominent climate change doubters, is about to get a new platform: the European Union presidency.

Klaus has called man-made global warming a myth and questioned sanity of Al Gore, the former US vice president who received the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for turning a spotlight on climate change.

Most recently, Klaus expressed hopes the EU would give up its ambitious plan to spearhead the global struggle against climate change in the face of the global financial crisis. More...

British teacher warns against celebrity culture...

Dr Mary Bousted, general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers union, claimed television stars and musicians are encouraged to behave badly because they know the public revels in their "distress and their downfall".

She claimed that by buying magazines featuring Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand, for example, readers allow the "clowns" to "act outrageously".

Dr Bousted denied that all teenagers just want to be famous, but admitted she had met a young girl whose only ambition was to become a WAG.

In a speech to the Oxford Union on Thursday night, Dr Bousted said: "At 12 she has, and is encouraged by her parents to have: hair extensions and false nails; to wear make-up; and when she is grown up, she wants to be Jordan. She was unable, despite the presenter's very kind interviewing style, to string a sentence together. What mattered, and what mattered only, was her appearance. More...

Malaysia backs down from yoga ban!!!

Malaysia's prime minister said Wednesday Muslims should still take up yoga, reversing an outright ban that has drawn widespread protests amid concerns over growing Islamic fundamentalism in the multiracial nation.

Malaysia's National Fatwa Council, comprising Islamic scholars, told Muslims at the weekend to avoid yoga because it uses Hindu prayers that could erode Muslims' faith.
But the decision drew a sharp rebuke from many Muslims and even Malaysia's sultans, or hereditary rulers, who said that they should be consulted on any matters involving Islam. More...

Biggs webcam suicide and the moral implications...

Abraham Biggs seemed to have found refuge from his battle with bipolar disorder and depression within an online community at fitness website bodybuilder.com.

The 19-year-old community college student from Florida posted thousands of messages to the site's "misc" forum — most were about girls, parties or other teen issues, but some dealt with his mental illness and forum’s role in his life.

"BB.com has become like a family to me (I know its kinda sad) but I find myself posting my life troubles and doubts on here, because I really don't want to talk to most ppl about stuff going on with me," he wrote in one post from August last year.

On November 19, Abraham took a fatal overdose of drugs in front of a webcam, while members of the same "family" watched on — some failing to intervene, others actively encouraging the teen to kill himself. More...

Italy: fascists offer money for babies to be named "Benito..."

What's in a name? A little extra cash, if the name is that of Italy's wartime Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini or his wife.

A far-right party is offering 1,500 euros ($1,900) to parents in southern Italian villages who name their children Benito or Rachele after the Mussolinis.

An official in the neo-Fascist Fiamma Tricolore party, Vincenzo Mancusi, says they are nice names. He says the initiative is a way to pay homage to his party's roots and keep alive names that are rarely used.

Mancusi said Tuesday the bonus applies to five villages in the Basilicata region where birth rates are especially low. Designed as an incentive, it applies to babies who are born in 2009. More...

Australia: restaurant bill dodgers Facebooked!!! Oh boy...

MELBOURNE restaurateur Peter Leary has used Facebook to track down bill dodgers in his up-market establishment, Seagrass.

The drama unfolded last week when a group of five young diners, after drinking at the bar, requested a table at the Southbank restaurant.

Over dinner, they worked their way expertly through the menu, ordered and drank fine wines and, after ordering dessert, slipped out "for a smoke". They kept going.

Leary was left with an unpaid bill for about $520, and little hope of recovering his money.

"It was then I remembered that when the group arrived, one of them had asked about one of our waitresses who was not working that night," Leary said yesterday. More...

Mumbai attacks: a new age of terror in India?

A coordinated series of terrorist attacks in Mumbai today signals a new age of extremism and sectarian violence that will likely increase over time. Since 2001 there have been 24 major terrorist strikes in India resulting in at least 966 deaths. The last five months have been the most harrowing with 302 dead from ten different attacks. As a hostage standoff continues in Collaba that number could rise even higher before the day is out.

What is most troubling about the recent assault on souther Mumbai is the sudden change in tactics. In the last several years most terrorist attacks have come in the form of coordinated small explosive charges, mostly left in nylon bags in commercial districts or IEDs made out of tiffin containers placed on the backs of bicycles in crowded shopping areas. What happened today doesn't fit the pattern of previous events. This wasn't a terrorist attack, this was a coordinated military assault on southern Mumbai excecuted with precision and calculated to inflict ecomonmic, civic, human and symbolic casualities. Mumbai attacks: Westerners being targeted?

Teams of heavily armed gunmen stormed luxury hotels, a popular restaurant and a crowded train station in coordinated attacks across India's financial capital Wednesday night, killing at least 78 people and taking Westerners hostage, police said. An explosion followed by a raging fire struck one of the hotels, the landmark Taj Mahal, early Thursday. Screams could be heard and enormous clouds of black smoke rose from the at the century-old edifice on Mumbai's waterfront. Firefighters were spraying water at the blaze.

The attackers specifically targeted Britons and Americans, witnesses said. Fires burned and gunfire was heard for hours. Officials said at least 200 people were wounded.

Gunmen who burst into the Taj "were targeting foreigners. They kept shouting: `Who has U.S. or U.K. passports?'" said Ashok Patel, a British citizen who fled from the hotel. Full story...

Obama: top bankers should forgo their bonuses this year. Why not next year too?

President-elect Barack Obama thinks bank executives should forgo their bonuses this year to show they are taking responsibility amid difficult economic times.

...

According to excerpts of the interview released by ABC, Obama said bank executives should make sacrifices because so many other people are struggling as the nation's economy slips further. Some financial firms, including Goldman Sachs, the Swiss bank UBS and the British bank Barclays, have said they aren't handing out annual bonuses to top executives, and Obama encouraged more to follow.

"I think that if you are already worth tens of millions of dollars, and you are having to lay off workers," Obama said, "the least you can do is say, 'I'm willing to make some sacrifice as well, because I recognize that there are people who are a lot less well off, who are going through some pretty tough times.'" 'British Fritzl' and his 27-year reign of terror shocks Britain...

A violent rapist with a "one-second fuse" who fathered 19 children with his two daughters during a reign of domestic terror lasting a quarter of a century was ordered yesterday to spend the rest of his life in jail by a judge who described the case as the most shocking he had ever heard.

An urgent review is under way into how it was that 10 of the children conceived by the women – who had been repeatedly beaten, abused and raped since the age of eight and 10 – were miscarried or terminated, yet their mothers' plight failed to come to the attention of welfare work.

Judge Alan Goldsack QC said: "As a result of this case, questions will inevitably be asked about what professionals, social and medical workers, have been doing for the last 20 years." More...

Jill Price and her awesome memory; blessing or curse?

"No one can imagine what it's really like," says Jill Price, 42, "not even the scientists who are studying me."

The Californian, who has an almost perfect memory, is trying to describe how it feels. She starts with a small demonstration of her ability. "When were you born?" she asks.

She hears the date and says: "Oh, that was a Wednesday. There was a cold snap in Los Angeles two days later, and my mother and I made soup."

...

Price can rattle off, without hesitation, what she saw and heard on almost any given date. She remembers many early childhood experiences and most of the days between the ages of 9 and 15. After that, there are virtually no gaps in her memory. "Starting on Feb. 5, 1980, I remember everything. That was a Tuesday."  Full story...

Zimbabwe witch-doctor cures British woman and changes her life forever...

SOME holidays are life-changing because of the breathtaking beauty and drama of the landscape, and others because they lead to new relationships that endure beyond a couple of weeks of shared experiences.

When Lesley Robinson and her partner Glyn travelled to Zimbabwe back in 1998, they had no way of knowing that they were embarking on a journey through a new land which would lead to a bigger adventure – a change of direction for Lesley's career and a close bond with a community whose lives were very different to their own back in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire.

Back then, Lesley was marketing director for a big American pharmaceutical company whose products were known worldwide. Today, she runs a small business selling natural alternative therapy products whose ingredients grow in Zimbabwe, and have been used for centuries by native healers or witchdoctors. More...

Oh boy! Tiger Woods latest credit crunch victim!!!

The credit crunch and accompanying global recession claimed its most famous sporting victim last night when General Motors, the troubled American carmaker, announced that it was ending its sponsorship deal with the world's most recognisable athlete, Tiger Woods.

The deal between GM and Woods, said to be worth more than $10m (£6.6m) a year to the golfer, had endured for almost a decade and become one of the most visible sponsorship arrangements in sport, not least because Woods' golf bag had been transformed into an advertisement for Buick, one of the carmaker's brands.

As part of the deal, the world No1 also took part in television commercials for the budget-priced range of cars - a source of mirth in some circles because Woods is reported to drive a Porsche. Ironically, during the nine years he has been promoting Buick its sale have reportedly fallen by 58% - more than any other GM brand. More...
