Sri Lankan man claims to have lived without eating food for five years...

A Sri Lankan man claims he has survived without food for the last five years.

Although experts believe humans can only live for two months without a meal, Kirby de Lanerolle insists he has only needed fresh air as nourishment.

The breatharian also claims his lifestyle - which he says harnesses light, wind and the 'vibrations of God' - can reverse the ageing process and make him immortal.

In an interview on TV show Taboo USA cited by The Sun, de Lanerolle said: 'There are energy sources out there that are greater than the food calories you are putting in your body.

'Calories come from photons and light and vibrations and wind. Anything can feed you if your energy centres are open.'

He admits to having eaten seven 500-calorie meals over the last ten months, but claims they made him feel ill.

He said: 'In this consciousness, when I do eat food, it makes me feel very tired. And my alertness goes away when I eat now.' Full story...

Vatican rent-a-boy and satanism claims revealed by priest...

Italian investigators have opened an inquiry into claims by a convicted pedophile priest that an underage prostitution ring has been operating inside the Holy Roman Church with clergymen hiring rentboys for sex inside churches.

Don Patrizio Poggi, 46, told Italian authorities that a former Carabinieri pimped boys for nine clergymen.

Poggi, who served a five-year sentence for abusing teenage boys while he was a parish priest at the San Filippo Neri church in Rome, said he made the allegations to “protect the Holy Church and the Christian community.”

The boys were chosen because they were starving and desperate, he claimed, according to Il Messaggero newspaper.

The former policeman used to recruit the boys, mostly eastern European immigrants, outside a gay bar named Twink near Rome’s Termini train station. He reportedly sat in his Fiat Panda – marked “Emergency Blood” to avoid parking fines – to make his selection. Full story...

School in Philippines suspends classes as 'evil spirits' possess 20 students...

School administrators have suspended classes in an elementary school in Mandaluyong City on Thursday after "evil spirits" possessed 20 students.

Report said some of the female students of Isaac Lopez Elementary School on Barangay Vergara began yelling while others fainted inside the classroom.

Teachers rushed to the scene and tried to restrain the "possessed" students from hurting themselves, the report added.

After calming down, four of the students told the teachers that they saw images of a mother and a child. They also saw an image of a man in black clothes.

Due to the commotion, school officials decided to suspend classes for the whole day. Source...

Man sues Japanese TV station for using 'too many foreign words'

A man is suing Japanese television for using 'too many foreign words'.

Hoji Takahashi, 71, is suing Japan's national broadcaster for emotional distress and demands 1.41 million yen (£9,132) in damages, AFP reports.

The pensioner, who is a member of The Treat Japanese as Important Association, believes that the broadcasters in Japan are too reliant on using English words instead of traditional, Japanese ones.

His lawyer Mutsuo Miyata said: "The basis of his concern is that Japan is being too Americanised.

"There is a sense of crisis that this country is becoming just a province of America."

Since World War II, Japan has regularly borrowed words from other languages. For example, most Japanese speakers use "trouble", "risk", "drive" and "parking" during everyday conversations.

Japan also uses words from other countries, such as Germany, France and Spain. Source...

New Jersey man falls into coma, wakes up in Poland...

An immigrant who suffered a stroke in New Jersey received a shock when he woke up in a hospital in Poland.

Wladyslaw Haniszewski had lived in the US state for over 30 years before he fell into a coma and deported to the country where he was born.

The 69-year-old, who authorities say was living in the country illegally, was being treated at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick but did not have any medical insurance.

Medical officials in the Polish town of Boleslawiec have accused the hospital of carting Mr Haniszewski around ‘like a sack of potatoes’ while unconscious, without telling his family or friends.

The Polish hospital also claims he was ‘dumped on their doorstep’ without them agreeing to the transfer. Full story...

GoAir opts for female crew to save fuel...

The falling rupee has claimed a new victim — the male cabin crew. Low cost carrier GoAir has decided to recruit only airhostesses from now on instead of the 'heavier' male flight pursers. The idea is to lighten the aircraft to reduce fuel burn because of increased operating costs.

GoAir currently has 330 cabin crew members, 40% of whom are males. Every additional kg on board costs Rs 3 per flight hour. With an airhostess weighing about 15-20kg less than a male flight purser, Go expects to save about Rs 2.5 crore to Rs 3 crore annually. P 15

The airline's 130-odd male flight pursers will keep flying but future cabin crew recruitments will be all airhostesses. Go plans to induct about 80 aircraft over next seven years, for which it will recruit about 2,000 airhostesses and pilots.

"The rupee's fall has hurt the industry badly. All major expenses — aircraft leasing, spare parts and fuel costs — are linked to the dollar. The fall in exchange rate of a rupee costs us Rs 30 crore on an annual basis. We are looking at every possible way of cost-cutting to remain profitable," GoAir CEO Giorgio De Roni said. Glenn Greenwald and emerging personal smears...

When I made the choice to report aggressively on top-secret NSA programs, I knew that I would inevitably be the target of all sorts of personal attacks and smears. You don't challenge the most powerful state on earth and expect to do so without being attacked. As a superb Guardian editorial noted today: "Those who leak official information will often be denounced, prosecuted or smeared. The more serious the leak, the fiercer the pursuit and the greater the punishment."

One of the greatest honors I've had in my years of writing about politics is the opportunity to work with and befriend my long-time political hero, Daniel Ellsberg. I never quite understood why the Nixon administration, in response to his release of the Pentagon Papers, would want to break into the office of Ellsberg's psychoanalyst and steal his files. That always seemed like a non sequitur to me: how would disclosing Ellsberg's most private thoughts and psychosexual assessments discredit the revelations of the Pentagon Papers?

When I asked Ellsberg about that several years ago, he explained that the state uses those tactics against anyone who dissents from or challenges it simply to distract from the revelations and personally smear the person with whatever they can find to make people uncomfortable with the disclosures.

So I've been fully expecting those kinds of attacks since I began my work on these NSA leaks. The recent journalist-led "debate" about whether I should be prosecuted for my reporting on these stories was precisely the sort of thing I knew was coming. Full story...

Singapore gripped by Hello Kitty frenzy...

Tempers flared and police had to be called in Thursday as anxious Singaporeans rushed to McDonald’s outlets to buy Hello Kitty plush toys being sold by the fastfood chain as a promotion.

Hundreds had begun queueing from Wednesday night to get their hands on a kitten in a skeleton outfit, depicting a character from the German fairy tale “The Singing Bone”.

It was the last of a series of six limited-edition Hello Kitty characters dressed in different outfits from popular fairy tales which were being sold by McDonald’s this month.

In some outlets, chaos broke out amid rampant queue jumping as supplies of the toys ran out soon after the stores opened for business on Thursday.

One video uploaded on YouTube showed police officers mediating between two customers in front of a McDonald’s counter. Full story...

Oxford sex ring brothers jailed for life...

Two brothers have been jailed for life for grooming vulnerable young girls as part of an Oxford sex ring.

Sentencing the seven men who abused the girls as part of a gang, Judge Peter Rook said: "These were sexual crimes of the upmost gravity. The depravity was extreme, each victim was groomed, coerced and intimidated."

Judge Rook jailed brothers Akhtar Dogar, 32, and Anjum Dogar, 31, for a minimum of 17 years telling them they had been found guilty of "exceptionally grave crimes".

The seven men, including another set of brothers, exploited girls as young as 11 and were found guilty of a catalogue of offences including rape, trafficking and organising prostitution last month after a five-month trial.

The girls were plied with alcohol and drugged with crack cocaine and heroin, then trafficked for sex across the country.

Operating from their Oxford base for seven years, the men targeted vulnerable and "out-of-control" youngsters aged between 11 and 16, many of whom were in care homes. Full story...

German car ad mocks Berlusconi...

German car rental company Sixt is making the most out of ex-Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi's legal woes by mocking him in an advertisement campaign.

Just days after Berlusconi was sentenced to seven years in prison amid reports he paid up to €4.5 million to the exotic dancer Karima El Mahroug, otherwise known as Ruby, Sixt worked up an ad playing on the conviction, which ran in German newspapers on Wednesday.

The ad shows a picture of Berlusconi, looking very Godfather-like in dark sunglasses, on the left-hand side, with the caption: "Alone for seven years in jail for €4.5 million?" Alongside this is a picture of a sports car, with the slogan: "Or one day in a sporty two-seater for €143?"

German humour aside, this isn't the first time Berlusconi has been mocked in an ad campaign. The Indian subsidiary of Ford was forced to apologise in March for an ad showing Berlusconi with a group of women bound and gagged in the boot of a Ford Figo. Berlusconi was pictured in the driver's seat with the caption: "Leave your worries behind with Figo's extra-large boot". Source...

Facebook denies sharing user information with Turkish govt...

(...)

Earlier on Wednesday, Turkish Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications, Binali Yildirim, said the country’s government was satisfied with Facebook’s assistance.

“Facebook has been working in coordination with the Turkish authorities for a long time. They have a unit in Turkey. We don’t have any problem with them,” Yildirim said. The statement sparked outrage among Turkish social network users.

Yildirim added that Twitter has not shown such “positive approach” despite “necessary warnings” from Turkey. He said that the Turkish government has asked Twitter, along with other social media sites, to set up a representative office inside the country.

“We have told all social media that...if you operate in Turkey you must comply with Turkish law…When information is requested, we want to see someone in Turkey who can provide this...there needs to be an interlocutor we can put our grievance to and who can correct an error if there is one,” he said.

“Twitter will probably comply too. Otherwise, this is a situation that cannot be sustained,” Yildirim stressed. His statement was presumably referring to social media’s role in the country’s recent anti-government protests. He added that the government seeks only to “turn down the volume of the social media,” rather than restricting it. Full story...

UK spy agencies get $154mn bonus amid sweeping cuts...

(...)

British Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne will present a review of public spending for 2015-16 on Wednesday with a view to cutting the deficit. While, funding for most government bodies will be slashed, MI6, MI5 and the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) will receive a bonus of up to $154 million.

The increase of 3.4 percent in overall funding for intelligence organizations, which already have a budget of $2.9 billion, will make them top of the UK government’s spending agenda, overtaking the health service, education and military.

The institutions that will suffer most at the hands of the $17 billion austerity cuts include the Business department, the Culture department, the Home Office and the Justice department. The Ministry of Defence, meanwhile, faces cuts of around $1.5 billion, with the reassurance that this will not stipulate a decrease in front-line troop numbers.

“While they’re cutting the science research budget, pollution controls, flood controls, closing down libraries, and dispossessing people with fragile lives, they want to put all this money into intelligence agencies and increase the foreign aid budget...Commentators have called it fascism because while they carry out ludicrous austerity, which makes no difference to the public accounts, they beef up security services as if they’re preparing for civil unrest,” RT contributor Afshin Rattansi said.

Recently, UK intelligence has come into the firing line after it was discovered the GCHQ has access to a massive global network of communications, storing calls, Facebook posts and internet histories. GCHQ also shares this data with the NSA. Full story...

Before his death, father of ADHD admitted it was a fictitious disease...

If you or someone you know has a child that has been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), chances are the child is actually just fine. At least this is what the "father" of ADHD, Leon Eisenberg, would presumably say if he were still alive. On his death bed, this psychiatrist and autism pioneer admitted that ADHD is essentially a "fictitious disease," which means that millions of young children today are being needlessly prescribed severe mind-altering drugs that will set them up for a life of drug addiction and failure.

As explained by The Sons of Liberty host Bradlee Dean, who also writes for The D.C. Clothesline, ADHD was merely a theory developed by Eisenberg. It was never actually proven to exist as a verifiable disease, despite the fact that Eisenberg and many others profited handsomely from its widespread diagnosis.

And modern psychiatry continues to profit as well, helping also to fill the coffers of the pharmaceutical industry by getting children addicted early to dangerous psychostimulant drugs like Ritalin (methylphenidate) and Adderall (amphetamine, dextroamphetamine mixed salts).

"ADHD is fraud intended to justify starting children on a life of drug addiction," said Dr. Edward C. Hamlyn, a founding member of the Royal College of General Practitioners, back in 1998 about the phony condition. Adding to this sentiment, psychiatrists Peter Breggin and Sami Timimi, both of whom oppose pathologizing the symptoms of ADHD, say that ADHD is more of a social construct than it is an objective "disorder." Rumours of Nelson Mandela's death...

A reliable source has revealed that Nelson Mandela’s life support machine was shut down and he has died in the hospital aged 94. According to the source, the iconic Mandela died last night while he was still in the hospital for the recurring lung infection that left him in critical condition for several days.

Rumors have flooded the newspapers and the internet with several sources reporting his death days earlier in a cruel attempt to fool the public and to upset the many people who have respect for this great humanitarian. The loss of the great man will be felt across the world.

Earlier today one of our writers, Laura Oneale, wrote an article questioning whether or not Nelson Mandela was still alive. He had been in the hospital 19 days for a recurring lung infection. As speculation surrounding his health continued to grow with many asking whether he was still alive or if, in fact, he had died. Until recently authorities would only confirm that he was on a life support system and remained in a critical condition.

Authorities have confirmed that Nelson Mandela has been taken off his life support machine, adding fuel to the speculation that he had died. Because of this, the rumor has been spreading that Nelson Mandela died last night and that the government and his family have “kept a lid” on the news because of American President Obama’s upcoming trip to South Africa. Obviously, the president’s visit will be overshadowed by the announcement of the Nobel Prize winning Mandela. Full story...

Father of the Web accuses 'hypocritical' West over spying...

The British inventor of the World Wide Web accused Western governments of hypocrisy in spying on the Internet while lecturing repressive leaders across the world for doing exactly the same.

Tim Berners-Lee, a London-born computer scientist who invented the Web in 1989 as the Berlin Wall crumbled, said the West was involved in "insidious" online spying that could change the way normal people use their computers.

The United States and Britain are facing domestic and international furor after a security contractor leaked documents that lifted the lid on previously secret American and British programs to spy on the Internet.

"In the Middle East, people have been given access to the Internet but they have been snooped on and then they have been jailed," Berners-Lee, 58, told The Times newspaper in an interview.

"It can be easy for people in the West to say 'oh, those nasty governments should not be allowed access to spy.' But it's clear that developed nations are seriously spying on the Internet," he said. Full story...

Fury as Euro MPs caught faking work...

Video footage of MEPs slapping and pushing a journalist filming them while they claim a £258 daily allowance after arriving arrived at work in the evening has sparked new calls for reform to the EU assembly.

The European Parliament pays the "subsistence allowance", which is paid without any proof of expenditure, when MEPs sign an attendance register in Brussels.

The payment is known as the "sign in and slope off" allowance and is notorious for allowing MEPs to pocket the allowance without staying in the EU assembly, or even Brussels, to do any work.

In a repeat of a past incident five years ago, Tom Staal, a Dutch journalist, filmed two MEPs arriving during the late afternoon to claim the allowance after the working day has ended.

He is slapped and pushed by two MEPs, Miroslav Ransdorf, a far-left Czech deputy and Raffaele Baldassarre, form the Italian centre-right, after confronting them about cashing in without having worked. Full story...

More and more French living lonely lives...

Loneliness is on the march in France and it is no longer an affliction that only blights elderly people, a worrying new survey by the organization Fondation de France revealed on Wednesday.

Since 2010, the last time the survey was carried out, one million more French people are leading solitary lives, with an estimated five million or 12 percent of the nation’s population aged over 18 now living without any social relations through family, friends, work or their community.

Odile de Laurens from the Fondation de France told The Local the modern way of life in France is contributing to the increase in the number of people living in loneliness.

"In the past people lived their lives in the same place in the same circles. These days you have to build your own friends network, your own professional network and you need both to survive. We may have to consider another model that is richer in terms of relationships," she said. Full story...

Fresh protests in Brazil despite government concessions...

Tens of thousands of Brazilians took to the streets on Wednesday in new demonstrations calling for a crackdown on corruption and better public services, just a day after Congress ceded to some of the key demands galvanizing protests across the country.

In Belo Horizonte, some 50,000 people gathered to demand improved education and healthcare as Brazil's third-largest city hosted a Confederations Cup semi-final soccer game between Brazil and Uruguay in a warm-up for the 2014 World Cup.

Hooded youths threw stones at police who used teargas to stop marchers 1-1/2 miles (3 km) from the stadium. A banner hung from a bridge read "FIFA go home" in reference to the world soccer body.

In Brasilia, demonstrators kicked soccer balls over a police cordon in the direction of Congress in a peaceful protest against the billions of dollars Brazil has spent building new stadiums for the global tournaments which the protesters say should have been used to improve public services including health, education and transport. EU demands answers on GCHQ snooping...

The European Commission has demanded to know why Britain is snooping on a “massive and indiscriminate scale” and hinted at legal action unless the Government can prove that the GCHQ listening station operates within EU law.

Viviane Reding, the commission vice-president who is also responsible for justice and equality, has has called on William Hague, the Foreign Secretary, to respond to 11 detailed questions “by the end of the week”.

“I have noted reports that the UK authorities are accessing, collecting and further processing, on a massive and indiscriminate scale, personal data in the form of communications passing through the UK,” she wrote in a letter that was made public on Wednesday.

“If reports are true these programmes could have a serious impact on the fundamental rights of individuals in the EU, including the right to privacy and data protection, the principle of proportionality and the rule of law generally.” Full story...

‘Abandoned’ US soldier kills himself...

An American war veteran suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has killed himself when he felt “abandoned” by the U.S. government.

In a heartbreaking note, which was first published by the Phoenix New Times and then in full by Gawker, Daniel Somers said that having been forced to commit “crimes against humanity” in Iraq led him to make the impossible decision on June 10.

“The simple truth is this: During my first deployment, I was made to participate in things, the enormity of which is hard to describe. War crimes, crimes against humanity,” the 30-year-old Somers wrote.

“Though I did not participate willingly, and made what I thought was my best effort to stop these events, there are some things that a person simply cannot come back from.”

“How can I possibly go around like everyone else while the widows and orphans I created continue to struggle?” Somers wrote. Full story...

Two girls, mother killed in Pakistan over family video showing them enjoying the rain...

A family video showing two teenage girls enjoying rain in their house led to their murder in Chilas on Sunday night. Their mother was also gunned down allegedly by her stepson and his four friends.

Five masked men barged into the house of retired police officer Rehmat Nabi and started firing, killing his wife and daughters, aged 15 and 16.

According to police, the crime was motivated by a video clip circulated on mobile phones and showing the girls overjoyed by rain in the lawn of their bungalow.

Why U.S. is being humiliated by the hunt for Snowden...

(...)

Perhaps it has something to do with Guantanamo. For sure, the Beijing Politburo has no problem with detaining people indefinitely without charge. After all, they've been doing it for years. But it comes hard from a global superpower that is constantly lecturing China and everybody else about the inviolability of human rights.

Perhaps it's a Bradley Manning thing. There's a lot of sympathy out there for the pint-sized soldier who dared to share the State Department's incredibly tedious cables, then got treated worse than a mass murderer.

Every country has its own experience of U.S. bullying. In Britain, the case of Pentagon hacker Gary McKinnon, accused by the U.S. of the "biggest military computer hack of all time", became a cause celebre.

In the end even Britain's sycophantic Cameron government was obliged, by force of public opinion, to throw out the U.S. extradition demand.

Extra-judicial assassination, drones, killer robots, extraordinary rendition, black ops, wet ops, psy-ops, silly ops... The world is a bit tired of all this American posturing, grandstanding, and self-serving banditry.

So now it's cyber-ops, but wholly unofficial, courtesy Mr E. Snowden. It would hard to accept it is real, if you didn't suspect it was virtual. Rather than decry it, many applaud it.

The White House is furious at the non-cooperation it has received. But has it occurred to them that maybe not just the Russians and the Chinese, but those soft, liberal Europeans and all the other neutrals also don't like the idea of being spied on by an out-of-control transnational agency beyond the reach of the law, any law, anywhere? Greenwald: Snowden's files are out there if "anything happens" to him...

As the U.S. government presses Moscow to extradite former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden, America’s most wanted leaker has a plan B. The former NSA systems administrator has already given encoded files containing an archive of the secrets he lifted from his old employer to several people. If anything happens to Snowden, the files will be unlocked.

Glenn Greenwald, the Guardian journalist who Snowden first contacted in February, told The Daily Beast on Tuesday that Snowden “has taken extreme precautions to make sure many different people around the world have these archives to insure the stories will inevitably be published.” Greenwald added that the people in possession of these files “cannot access them yet because they are highly encrypted and they do not have the passwords.” But, Greenwald said, “if anything happens at all to Edward Snowden, he told me he has arranged for them to get access to the full archives.”

The fact that Snowden has made digital copies of the documents he accessed while working at the NSA poses a new challenge to the U.S. intelligence community that has scrambled in recent days to recover them and assess the full damage of the breach. Even if U.S. authorities catch up with Snowden and the four classified laptops the Guardian reported he brought with him to Hong Kong the secrets Snowden hopes to expose will still likely be published. Mysterious condition causes girl to cry tears of blood...

20-year-old Yaritza Oliva is living a nightmare. For the last couple of weeks the girl from Purranque, Chile, has been crying tears of blood and so far no one has been able to explain her mysterious condition.

Yaritza first noticed blood tears coming out of her eyes about two weeks ago, but due to her family’s poor financial situation, she couldn’t seek any professional help. The only ophthalmologist who attends at the local hospital in Purranque a few days a week has so many scheduled patients that he wouldn’t see her without an appointment. One of the few times she was consulted by a professional physician was when she was transferred at the hospital of Puerto Montt, where doctors were baffled by her condition, but could only give her some eye drops for the burning sensation she feels when the blood pours from her eyes. At first, Yaritza believed she suffered some kind of extreme conjunctivitis or infection, but after seeing photos and video footage of the girl crying blood, Dr.Alexander Lutz, an ophthalmologist at Las Condes Clinic, excluded those possibilities saying they have very different symptoms. He argued the mysterious condition could be caused by blood clotting problems, alterations in platelets or by the use of certain medications. An expert would have to check if there is bleeding in any other areas of Yaritza’s body, but she didn’t reveal anything of the sorts in the video interview with Chilean website 24 Horas.

Yaritza Oliva cries blood several times a day, and says the pain is indescribable, but for now all her family can do is wipe away the red tears and help calm the burning sensation. The girl, who at one point believed her condition was a stigma won’t leave the house, afraid of what people might think when they see her blood tears. And if her bizarre affliction wasn’t enough, the 20-year-old Chilean also suffers from a bizarre syndrome that causes her limbs to dislocate frequently leaving her incapable to walk or use her hands. Presidential rule by deception: Obama, the master con-man...

(...)

From the beginning of his Presidential campaign, Obama demonstrated his proficiency as the master of all cons. He spoke passionately against torture while consulting with the torturers; he condemned Wall Street speculators while appointing key Street operatives as economic advisers. He promised a new deal in the Middle East , especially for Palestinians and then appointed a dual citizen, Israeli-US, Rahm Emmanuel (son of an Israeli Irgun terrorist) to be his most intimate Presidential advisor. Honolulu born and bred, Barack modulated his voice according to the audience, adopting a Baptist minister’s cadence for the black audiences while assuming the professorial tone of an Ivy League lawyer for his Wall Street contributors.

He hob-knobbed with Hollywood celebrities and Silicon billionaires, who bankrolled the fairy tale of his ‘historic breakthrough’ – the First Afro-American President who would speak for all Americans – nay for the entire world! Millions of giddy camp followers, white, black, old and young, the trade unionists and community activists alike were willingly deceived. They had chosen to disregard the fact that Barack Obama’s key advisers were rabid militarists, big bankers, corporate CEO’s, die-hard Zionists and Wall Street manipulators.

Indeed Obama’s supporters were enchanted by the phony rhetoric, the demagogy, the ‘populist style’, and the fake ‘authenticities’. Here was the man who promised to end the wars, close the torture concentration camp in Guantanamo , bring Wall Street to heel, repeal the Patriot Act and restore the Bill of Rights. And he was ‘their guy’ – shooting hoops in an urban playground – something Bush had never done! In truth, Barack Hussein Obama did a lot that Bush never dared to do – he surpassed Bush by far in committing war crimes against humanity – pushing for more military adventures abroad and police state repression at home. He exceeded by far any President in US history in assuming dictatorial police powers, in waging multiple wars while directing the massive transfer of state revenues to Wall Street bankers. President Obama, hands down, will be regarded as the greatest con-man President in American history. The Carters, Reagans and Clintons all pale in comparison: the enormous gap between style and substance, promise and performance, peace and war, capital and labor has never been greater. Mick Jagger jabs Obama over NSA scandal...

President Barack Obama didn’t attend The Rolling Stones concert in Washington, DC Monday night, but lead singer Mick Jagger said that wasn’t likely to keep the commander-in-chief from checking out the show.

During the course of a two-hour-long show in the nation’s capital on Monday, the legendary singer stopped to briefly address the National Security Agency scandal that has plagued the presidency in recent weeks.

According to the Washington Post and other eyewitnesses at the sold-out show, Jagger stopped at one point to say to the crowd, “I don’t think President Obama is here tonight. . . . But I’m sure he’s listening in.”

Other attendees tweeted during the show that Jagger’s mention of the president’s name prompted audible booing from the audience, and a message from Senator Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) regarding the NSA quip accumulated nearly 1,000 retweets on Twitter. Full story...

Germany demands answers from Britain over GCHQ surveillance...

The German government has expressed its rising anger over Britain's monitoring of global phone and internet traffic and has directly challenged the legality of the controversial surveillance project.

On Tuesday, justice minister Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger sent two letters to the British justice secretary, Chris Grayling, and the home secretary, Theresa May, demanding to know the extent to which German citizens have been targeted and warning that democracy could not flourish when states employ a "veil of secrecy" to obscure their actions.

Describing the revelations over GCHQ's surveillance operation as "like a Hollywood nightmare", Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger asked for clarification of the legal basis for Project Tempora and demanded to know whether the programme has been authorised by any judicial authority, according to the Guardian. She also asked for information on the specific nature of data that was collected and whether "concrete suspicions" triggered the data collection.

(...)

The British inventor of the world wide web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, also waded into the controversy yesterday, accusing the West of hypocrisy and questioning the ability of governments to keep the personal data they have collected safe.

"In the Middle East people have been given access to the internet but they have been snooped on and then they have been jailed," he told The Times.

"Obviously it can be easy for people in the West to say 'Oh those nasty governments shouldn't be allowed access to spy', but it is clear that developed nations are seriously spying on the internet." Full story...

Bono love-bombs mass murderer Shimon Peres...

Bono is almost equally well known as a charity worker as a singer. The latest beneficiaries of his generosity are war criminals and their wives.

On Tuesday, the U2 frontman gave up his lunch-time to keep Michelle Obama company on her trip to Dublin. Poor Michelle sees little of her husband on that day of the week: Barack spends it compiling a list of people he wants to have killed by drone strikes. The president was extra busy this particular Tuesday, attending a G8 summit in the north of Ireland and assuring other world leaders that he wouldn’t dream of reading their emails.

Having dined for Ireland, the ubiquitous Bono was spotted in Jerusalem that evening, wishing a happy 90th birthday to Shimon Peres. Admittedly, Bono’s message was delivered on a video screen. But he seems to have been there in spirit as he declared Peres “a great gift not only to Israel but to the entire world.”

Ever the diplomat, Bono did not dwell on the track record of this “great gift”: how Peres helped build up Israel’s arms industry, including its nuclear weapons capability; how he ordered the bombardment of Lebanon in 1996 (including the massacre of 102 civilians in Qana); how he has supported Israel’s recent attacks on Gaza; how he has honored soldiers who helped to kill Turkish peace activists in 2010. Moscow teens decapitate man and use head as football...

Two teenagers were detained in eastern Moscow on Tuesday on suspicion of having decapitated a local homeless man after taking a sudden dislike to him, the local Investigative Committee said in a statement.

A beheaded body was found near a local residential building with a trail of blood leading to a nearby apartment, the Russian capital’s Investigative Committee said in a statement on its website.

Inside the blood-stained apartment, police found an ax and saw that they believe were used in the beheading, the statement said.

Two teenagers, who have not been named, were detained in the apartment as murder suspects, the statement said, adding that three other teenagers are thought to have been present during the incident, but not involved in the murder.

The tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda reported that the two suspects had been drinking and attacked the homeless man with knives in a fit of alcohol-induced rage, citing one of the three teenagers. Full story...

'Password fatigue' haunts Internet masses...

Looking for a safe password? You can give HQbgbiZVu9AWcqoSZmChwgtMYTrM7HE3ObVWGepMeOsJf4iHMyNXMT1BrySA4d7 a try. Good luck memorizing it.

Sixty-three random alpha-numeric characters -- in this case, generated by an online password generator -- are as good as it gets when it comes to securing your virtual life.

But as millions of Internet users have learned the hard way, no password is safe when hackers can, and do, pilfer them en masse from banks, email services, retailers or social media websites that fail to fully protect their servers.

And besides, with technology growing by leaps and bounds, why does the username-and-password formula -- a relic of computing's Jurassic era -- remain the norm?

"The incredibly short answer is, it's cheap," said Per Thorsheim, a Norwegian online security expert and organizer of PasswordsCon, the world's only conference dedicated to passwords, taking place in Las Vegas in July. Full story...
