Rape is the fastest growing crime in India...

It was just past 9 p.m. of Feb. 1 when guards of the Ernakulam-Shornur train found 23-year-old Soumya, an accountant, unconscious near the railway tracks at Vettikkattiri in Thrissur district, Kerala state.

Soumya was her family’s breadwinner and had been travelling home from work in Kochi city when a notorious youth reportedly dragged her from the women’s compartment, pushed her out, smashed her head with a stone and raped her.

Soumya died five days later.

What happened to Soumya is not an isolated sexual horror. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) says rape is the fastest growing crime in India, with a spike in the number of cases reported for January and February 2011. More...

Horrific brutality in Kashmir...

Youth and children as young as 10 are tortured and sometimes disappear completely...

"I will never be the same," says Sameer Khan (name changed), a student in his early twenties. Khan at his age has endured plenty. Behind his soft-spoken exterior lies a resilient interior that surfaces with time and trust. In his late teens, Khan was put through physical and psychological torture by the Indian security agencies in the disturbed region of Kashmir.

"I was thrown into a dark room and tortured. They used gun butts to break my back. While I was still in pain, a stream of blood ran through my nose and head… and when it clotted in my left eye, I went blind. An hour later, some policemen came and began to torture my private parts. This was and will be most shameful experience for me for the rest of my life. When electric shocks were given to my private parts, I felt this is the end of world and it was perhaps,” Khan revealed details after a few months.

The United Nation's Convention Against Torture states that torture cannot be "justified under any exceptional circumstances whatsoever, whether a state of war or a threat of war, internal political instability or any other public emergency”.

Last summer, non-government organizations said several youth and underage boys were picked up by the authorities for participating in street demonstrations against the killings of street protesters in the Kashmir Valley. More...

Robert Fisk: Out of Syria's darkness come tales of terror...

In Damascus, the posters – in their tens of thousands around the streets – read: "Anxious or calm, you must obey the law." But pictures of President Bashar al-Assad and his father Hafez have been taken down, by the security police no less, in case they inflame Syrians.

There are thieves with steel-tipped rubber coshes on the Damascus airport road at night, and in the terminal the cops ask arriving passengers to declare iPods and laptops. In the village of Hala outside Deraa, Muslim inhabitants told their Christian neighbours to join the demonstrations against the regime – or leave.

Out of the darkness of Syria come such tales.

And they are true. Syrians arriving in Lebanon are bringing the most specific details of what is going on inside their country, of Fifth Brigade soldiers fighting the armed units of Maher Assad's Fourth Brigade outside Deraa, of random killings around Damascus by the ever-growing armed bands of Shabiha ("the mafia") from the Alawite mountains, of massive stocking up of food. One woman has just left her mother in the capital with 10 kilos of pasta, 10 kilos of rice, five kilos of sugar, box after box of drinking water. More...

Iran planning a "halal" internet???

Iranian authorities have reportedly announced they intend to launch an Islamic Internet to counter the influence of the Western-dominated World Wide Web, a move slammed as "repressive" by the National Iranian American Council.

Ali Aqamohammadi, head of economic affairs for Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, announced the plans during an interview this month with state news agency IRNA.

"Iran will soon create an Internet that conforms to Islamic principles, to improve its communication and trade links with the world," Aqamohammadi said. "We can describe it as a genuinely 'halal' network aimed at Muslims on an ethical and moral level. The aim of this network is to increase Iran and the Farsi language's presence in what has become the most important source of international communication." More...

India quietly puts a tight leash on internet free speech...

Free speech advocates and Internet users are protesting new Indian regulations restricting Web content that, among other things, can be considered “disparaging,” “harassing,” “blasphemous” or “hateful.”

The new rules, quietly issued by the country’s Department of Information Technology earlier this month and only now attracting attention, allow officials and private citizens to demand that Internet sites and service providers remove content they consider objectionable on the basis of a long list of criteria.

Critics of the new rules say the restrictions could severely curtail debate and discussion on the Internet, whose use has been growing fast in India.

The list of objectionable content is sweeping and includes anything that “threatens the unity, integrity, defense, security or sovereignty of India, friendly relations with foreign states or public order.” More...

200 members of Syria's Baath party quit over crackdown on protesters...

Two hundred members of Syria's ruling Baath Party from the province of Deraa and surrounding regions resigned on Wednesday in protest against an attack by security forces on the southern city.

"In view of the negative stance taken by the leadership of the Arab Socialist Baath Party towards the events in Syria and in Deraa, and after the death of hundreds and the wounding of thousands at the hands of the various security forces, we submit our collective resignation," said a declaration signed by the officials.

Syrian troops tightened control on Wednesday over flashpoints of protest against President Bashar al-Assad, who faced growing international calls to end violence that a rights group said had killed over 450 people.

Tanks patrolled the southern city of Deraa, where the uprising against Assad erupted nearly six weeks ago, troops poured overnight into the Damascus suburb of Douma and security forces surrounded the restive coastal city of Banias. More...

The country with the biggest gold reserves per person is ...

THE creditworthiness of a country used to be judged by the level of its gold reserves. Under the gold standard, a fall in reserves would lead to the central bank taking crisis measures. The country with the biggest reserves in the world is, not surprisingly, America, with 8,134 tonnes. But expressed in terms of reserves per person, the picture looks very different. It is no surprise to see Switzerland at the top of the list, but why is Lebanon in second place? Its reserves were purchased when the country was the Middle East’s financial centre in the 1960s and 1970s and safeguarded through the civil war years by legal restrictions and by central-bank governor Edmond Naim, who according to legend slept in the bank to protect the hoard. China does not feature in the list at all; but gold bugs fantasise about what might happen if the people’s republic were to swap just some of its mountain of Treasury bonds for bullion. Turkish police donned white coats and stethoscopes to disguise themselves as doctors, then knocked on people's doors to see how easily they would fall for a confidence scam.

The undercover police officers told residents of the southeastern city of Gaziantep they were screening for high blood pressure and handed out pills, according to Turkish media.

They were alarmed when residents at 86 out of 100 households visited on Tuesday swallowed the pills immediately.

Police later returned to warn residents to be more cautious. More...

Apple says iPhone location tracking was a "misunderstanding..."

It took a week, but Apple finally responded last night to a row that its iPhone logs owners' movements.

The technology giant denied that its phenomenally popular handset has a privacy problem - and then promised to fix it.

The controversy erupted last week when security researchers said a file found on PCs linked to iPhones allowed them to create maps of the phones' movements for up to a year.

Combined with similar questions about Google's Android smartphone software, the news left privacy-conscious smartphone users wondering how much information they were unknowingly giving up. More...

Is the Facebook bubble about to burst?

Early-stage investors and employees are worried the bubble might be about to burst.

A group of shareholders want to offload $1billion of Facebook shares on the secondary market in a sale that would value the company at more than $70 billion.

It would be one of the largest Facebook share transactions to date and show concern that the social networking site’s growth cannot keep pace with its market valuation.

The sellers had tried to offload shares at a price valuing Facebook at $90billion, which would have made it more valuable than Time Warner and News Corp combined.

‘At the current valuation where it is, it is really hard to justify the investment,’ said Sumeet Jain, of venture capital firm CMEA Capital, which has knowledge of Facebook. More...

China-bashing Donald Trump's clothing line made in ... China!!!

Donald Trump has emerged in recent years as the nation's foremost China basher, going after the Asian superpower for undervaluing its currency and for taking American manufacturing and jobs. So it's at least ironic -- and at most an example of gross hypocrisy -- that Trump's own line of men's wear, the Donald J. Trump Signature Collection, is manufactured in China.

I discovered this after walking from Salon's offices to the large Macy's in midtown Manhattan, where an entire section is devoted to the Donald J. Trump Signature Collection of suits and ties. This particular corner of the store is decorated with an oversize portrait of Trump; the line promises to provide "the pinnacle of style and sophistication" and "the necessities to be boardroom ready all of the time."

On Tuesday, Dr Khiyami was called to the Foreign Office to be told Britain regarded his government's use of force against the demonstrators as "unacceptable".

The ant and the spider...

China risks getting old before it gets rich...

The harsh logic of China's one-child policy is starting to unravel, and census data to be released on Thursday may well stoke debate whether the aging nation should relax restrictions.

Demographers worry that without change, China will become the first country in the world to age before it gets rich.

Once seen as key to averting a Malthusian disaster of over-population, China's choke on family size to usually one child in cities and two in the countryside now threatens its economic future, many demographers say, with fewer people left to pay and care for an increasingly grey population.

They say maintaining that policy is a mistake with profound implications for the world's second-largest economy. More...

Britain's Channel 4 to air 'horrific' Sri Lanka footage...

Channel 4 is to air "probably the most horrific" footage it has ever shown in an investigation into alleged war crimes in Sri Lanka.

A day after UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon announced he is considering whether to investigate "credible allegations" that Sri Lankan forces committed war crimes in the closing weeks of the civil war in 2009, Channel 4 has revealed it will screen what it calls "harrowing and dramatic footage" which appears to document atrocities being carried out.

(...)

Channel 4's head of news and current affairs, Dorothy Byrne, who commissioned the programme, said: "The footage is probably the most horrific the channel has ever shown. The decision to show it at length was made only after serious and careful consideration.

"This dossier of visual evidence of alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by forces of the government of Sri Lanka is of the greatest possible public interest. US doctors turned 'blind eye' to Guantanamo torture...

US Department of Defense doctors and psychologists whose duty was to care for inmates at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, concealed evidence of intentional harm and torture, said a study.

The findings, published in the peer-reviewed journal PloS Medicine, come in the wake of a host of secret US documents released by WikiLeaks, shedding light on conditions in the US military prison in Cuba.

Co-authored by a retired army brigadier general and an expert with Physicians for Human Rights, the study is based on a review of the medical records and legal files of nine inmates at the US "war on terror" facility.

The authors call into question whether military doctors, who like their civilian colleagues generally adhere to the Hippocratic Oath to do no harm, should have done more when confronted with potential signs of abuse or torture. More...

France Telecom worker sets himself on fire in yet another suicide...

A France Telecom-Orange worker has died after setting himself alight outside his office, the latest in a wave of suicides at the company.

The 57-year-old married father of four, described as a sociable member of staff, set himself on fire in the car park of a site at Merignac, near Bordeaux, after arriving for a morning shift.

He had worked for the company for 30 years, most recently at a call centre dealing with company accounts, and was a trade union member who monitored safety and work conditions.

François Deschamps, of the CFE-CGC Unsa union, suggested the man had struggled with being made to frequently change jobs. "Those enforced changes meant he had to sell his house. He had written to the management on several occasions and in my understanding had no reply," Deschamps told AFP. More...

Apple being sued over iPad, iPhone tracking ...

Apple Inc was accused of invasion of privacy and computer fraud by two customers who claim in a lawsuit that the company is secretly recording movements of iPhone and iPad users.

Vikram Ajjampur, an iPhone user in Florida, and William Devito, a New York iPad customer, sued April 22 in federal court in Tampa, Florida, seeking a judge's order barring the alleged data collection.

The complaint cited a report last week by two computer programmers claiming that Apple's iOS4 operating system is logging latitude-longitude coordinates along with the time a spot is visited. The programmers said Apple devices are collecting about a year's worth of location data. Apple hasn't commented on the matter since the April 20 report was released.

"We take issue specifically with the notion that Apple is now basically tracking people everywhere they go," Aaron Mayer, an attorney for the plaintiffs, said today in a telephone interview. "If you are a federal marshal, you have to have a warrant to do this kind of thing, and Apple is doing it without one." More...

The truth about Churchill, Truman, FDR, Wilson and Trotsky...

The problem with the history we are taught in schools is that it is taught by instructors with an interventionist bent using history books based on interventionist theories. It is hard to sift through the nonsense to create a clear picture, since in many cases key facts are distorted or omitted.

Being the curious type, I have imagined that, if I were a billionaire, one thing I would do is find someone who was very intelligent, could write well, and understood the importance of liberty and say to this person, "Look, you have 10 years, 20 years, whatever it takes, study the 20th Century for me then write a report about what the world wars were about and what the leaders were really like. Tell me who the real bastards were and how the world got into these wars."

I no longer dream of the day I will be able to put such a person under my employ to find the truth. The report has been written. Great Wars & Great Leaders: A Libertarian Rebuttal, the collected writings of Ralph Raico, provides all the important details of the 20th Century world wars. It details how the wars came about, and reveals the truth about the ruthless leaders that are responsible for millions upon millions of deaths. More...

Failure to act on Syria is 'licence to kill'

After moving swiftly to sanction repression in Libya, the world has hesitated to act against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in fear of tipping the delicate Middle East power balance, analysts say.

"This hesitation on Syria is giving the wrong message to the regime," said Nadim Shehadi of the London-based Chatham House think-tank. "The longer the world is indecisive, the more the regime thinks it has a licence to kill."

As heavily-armed troops fired live rounds at pro-democracy protesters in the Syrian town of Daraa for a second day, bringing the death toll to close to 400 since March 15, the US, Britain and France began to up the pressure on Assad.

The Middle East spokesman for Human Rights Watch, Nadim Houry, added that despite longstanding international commitments to respect human rights, the issue of rights had consistently been considered secondary -- and often an irritant -- in world diplomacy.

International response to repression in Iran had been far louder than in currently in Syria, "showing the world's double-standards", he said.

"Now we have an opportunity for people to push for a more principled diplomacy in the region, where people are yearning for the same values upheld by Europe," he said.

"It's time for fortress Europe to act," he said. Full story...

13-year-old becomes the new maharajah of Jaipur!!!

By the time the sun sets over the fabled "pink city" of Jaipur on Wednesday, India will have a new king. The heir to the once independent Rajasthani city and its desert dominions will have succeeded to his throne – and to his heritage of lawsuits, snobbery and palace intrigues – at the age of 13.

Maharaja Padmanabh Singh's title is not recognised by law since such feudal remnants were swept away by legislation in the early 1970s, but it still inspires respect in this deeply hierarchical country where the aristocracy is venerated despite rapid social change.

However, pending a court decision, the young royal's wealth and power will be somewhat less magnificent than that of his illustrious predecessors who invited British royalty on tiger hunts.

The estimated £400m family fortune is tied up in lawsuits and the teenage ruler will only be able to control the city palace – though its 30 acres, thousands of rooms, suites, courtyards, museum and elephant stables will bring in ample income. More...

Hikikomori psychiatric disorder could complicate Japan quake recovery...

A growing psychiatric phenomenon in Japan known as hikikomori could be especially troublesome in the aftermath of the country’s massive earthquake and tsunami.

In the early 1990’s an extreme form of isolation emerged, where young Japanese people seclude themselves in their homes for months or even years at a time. Attempts to establish the prevalence of the phenomenon suggested over 1 million Japanese people could have hikikomori, but some researchers believe the actual number may be higher.

People with hikikomori often have symptoms of anxiety and depression and unusual sleep patterns. The official definition (sidebar below) includes complete home isolation, but most psychiatrists and researchers I encountered in Japan use a working definition that ranges from complete seclusion to going out every day but having no friends or jobs. Patients tend to sleep during the day, and at night they watch TV, play computer games, and read manga (comic books). They often eat alone in their bedrooms and do a great deal of internet chatting, but have very little face-to-face communication with others. More...

Taiwanese singer Lee Mi strips to protest nuclear power...

Singer Lee Mi held true to the theme of her "rather nude than nuke" protest and appeared partially naked outside the Presidential Office yesterday to express her opposition to the use of nuclear power in Taiwan.

Lee, who wore a flesh-colored bikini and played a helpless citizen, and eight other activists, who wore radiation-protective clothing and played government officials, performed a skit showing what could happen if a nuclear crisis were to occur in Taiwan.

Their drama had a happy ending in which the idea of a nuclear-free nation triumphed in the end, but the singer still drew the attention of police.

Female police officers deployed to patrol the protest attempted to cover Lee's partially naked body. More...

Australian doubts he'll be paid for Delhi Games services...

An Australian who provided services to the New Delhi Commonwealth Games last year is worried he will never be paid following the arrest of the event's chief organiser.

Authorities say Suresh Kalmadi will be charged with several conspiracy counts relating to the awarding of commercial contracts for last year's games.

They allege Mr Kalmadi conspired to award a contract to a Swiss firm and manipulated tenders and knowingly inflated costs.

(...)

Mr Howard says he believes Mr Kalmadi's arrest comes one year too late.

"He was the chairman of a committee that throughout my entire dealings with them was totally inept," he said.

"When dealing with the Commonwealth Games, one thinks that you're dealing with a professional outfit and they certainly didn't represent that." Full story...

Syria condemned for attacks against civilians...

Foreign Secretary William Hague today condemned "utterly" the bloody crackdown on protests in Syria and called for an end to violent repression.

Mr Hague confirmed that Britain is working with partners in the United Nations Security Council, the European Union and the Middle East region to send a "strong signal" to Syrian President Bashar Assad that he must halt violence against civilians.

The UK has joined France, Germany and Portugal in drawing up a draft statement on Syria which is being circulated at the UN, according to Government sources.

The move comes amid growing concern over the brutal tactics being employed by the Syrian regime to quell unrest and silence calls for President Assad to go. More...

Computer glitch in New Zealand supermarket leads to free-for-all !!!

Shoppers who took advantage of a supermarket that accidentally opened with no staff could be considered part of a "real life candid camera" or patients in a "mad experiment" that explored morality, a professor of religion says.

About 24 people cruised the aisles at Hamilton's Mill St Pak 'n Save in New Zealand on Good Friday morning after a computer glitch incorrectly opened the doors at 8am without a checkout person in sight.

About half paid for their groceries using the self-scan service, but that stopped working when someone scanned alcohol, which requires a staff member to check a customer's age before the system is unlocked.

Passenger in India flies to Singapore ... after making 4 attempts and one week later!!!

It took Kunal Shah a week and four trips to the IGI Airport before he was able to fly out to Singapore. This despite a confirmed ticket. Shah, a resident of Delhi, was booked to fly to Singapore on Tuesday morning on Air India's flight AI 380. His flight that night and the following night was cancelled and then he was not permitted to board another flight on Saturday as his ticket showed that he had already travelled. He finally managed to leave for his destination on Sunday, after spending another couple of hours at the airport in the morning as the airline goofed up on his ticket for the second time.

"On Monday morning I did a web check-in and reached the airport two hours before the scheduled departure of 12:05am. While I was standing in line for check-in I heard an announcement that the flight had been cancelled. When I checked with the staff on duty, they said there was no problem and issued me a boarding card. When I reached the boarding gate I realized there was nobody there and the CISF personnel on duty there told me that the flight had been cancelled," said Shah. More...

Credible allegations of war crimes in Sri Lanka: UN report

Shelling by the Sri Lankan government, in the final stages of the war with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE) in 2009, claimed the most number of civilian lives, according to a UN report.

"Most civilian casualties in the final phases of the war were caused by government shelling. The government systematically shelled hospitals on all fronts. The government systematically deprived people in conflict zone of humanitarian aid in the form of food and medical supplies, particularly surgical supplies, adding to their suffering," said the report, which was officially released yesterday.

The UN panel estimated that 40,000 people were killed in the war.

"The panel's determination of credible allegations reveals a very different version of the final stages of the war than that maintained to this day by the government," it said. More...
