Disgraced mailman caught burying thousands of letters...

Caught burning mail he was supposed to deliver in 2010, Richard Farrell put himself forward as a changed man.

Farrell’s attorney described the Hood Canal contract mail carrier as “genuinely remorseful” and ready to get “his life back on track.”

For burning or stealing thousands of letters, Farrell, now 47, was sentenced to 120 hours of community service and three years on probation. His probation was cut short late last year after authorities determined he didn’t need government supervision any longer.

Now, though, investigators contend they missed the bulk of Farrell’s thefts while examining his Belfair property in 2010. According to court papers, thousands of letters previously missed by investigators were found buried on his property during a recent search.

Agents with the U.S. Postal Service Inspector General’s Office searched Farrell’s home on March 15 and seized 159 postal tubs filled with letters, according to recently unsealed court documents. While an exact count isn’t offered, Farrell previously packed about 220 letters into each tub found at his property; if he remained true to form, investigators may have recovered more than 35,000 letters and packages. Prostitute in Zimbabwe who ‘died’ during romp came back to life in coffin...

A PROSTITUTE in Zimbabwe 'died' during a hotel romp with a client - only to come back to life as her body was being put in a coffin.

The vice girl reportedly collapsed during a sex session last week at the Manor Hotel in Bulaweyo.

Convinced she was dead, her shocked client called the police - who sent paramedics to collect the body.

But as they were loading the 'corpse' into a metal coffin, the hooker suddenly woke up screaming.

Local news reports claim she leaped from the casket, yelling: "You want to kill me, you want to kill me".

Terrified staff and guests at the hotel who had gathered to watch the scene unfold, fled in panic.

A source told Bulaweyo24 News: "It was like a movie. People were running away in different directions. It was a scary incident because we were all convinced that she had died because she was just cold. Miracles surely do happen."

The shaken hooker - known locally as MaNdlo - was escorted home by another prostitute. Source...

Domestic drones and their unique dangers...

The use of drones by domestic US law enforcement agencies is growing rapidly, both in terms of numbers and types of usage. As a result, civil liberties and privacy groups led by the ACLU - while accepting that domestic drones are inevitable - have been devoting increasing efforts to publicizing their unique dangers and agitating for statutory limits. These efforts are being impeded by those who mock the idea that domestic drones pose unique dangers (often the same people who mock concern over their usage on foreign soil). This dismissive posture is grounded not only in soft authoritarianism (a religious-type faith in the Goodness of US political leaders and state power generally) but also ignorance over current drone capabilities, the ways drones are now being developed and marketed for domestic use, and the activities of the increasingly powerful domestic drone lobby. So it's quite worthwhile to lay out the key under-discussed facts shaping this issue.

I'm going to focus here most on domestic surveillance drones, but I want to say a few words about weaponized drones. The belief that weaponized drones won't be used on US soil is patently irrational. Of course they will be. It's not just likely but inevitable. Police departments are already speaking openly about how their drones "could be equipped to carry nonlethal weapons such as Tasers or a bean-bag gun." The drone industry has already developed and is now aggressively marketing precisely such weaponized drones for domestic law enforcement use. It likely won't be in the form that has received the most media attention: the type of large Predator or Reaper drones that shoot Hellfire missiles which destroy homes and cars in Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, Afghanistan and multiple other countries aimed at Muslims (although US law enforcement agencies already possess Predator drones and have used them over US soil for surveillance). Female tourists shun India after rape attack...

Women travelers have turned their back on India after the notorious gang rape and murder of a Delhi student in December highlighted the scale of sexual violence in the country.

A survey by Indian chambers of commerce found a 35 per cent decline in the numbers of female foreign tourists since the 23 year girl was raped and mutilated by six men on a Delhi bus before she was dumped on the road and left to die.

The attack provoked protests throughout India and forced the government to introduce new tougher sentences for sexual assaults on women and fast track courts to reassure women it was concerned for their safety. It also led India’s media to give greater prominence to reporting rape and sexual assault cases amid wider soul searching about the attitude of India’s men and families to women.

But according to the survey of Indian tourist businesses by Assocham, the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India, thousands of men and women planning holidays in India are no longer prepared to take the risk.

Two brutal attacks on foreign visitors in India in the last two weeks have reinforced the fear. The trial of six men accused of gang-raping a Swiss woman who was attacked in front of her husband in Madhya Pradesh as they camped overnight in a forest during a cross country cycle holiday, began on Saturday. The men held her at gun-point and restrained her husband back as they each raped her. Full story...

'I love Paris' may soon be passe for Chinese tourists...

Mass muggings and attacks on Chinese tourists in Paris have spawned alarm and warnings of a decline in the number of free-spending visitors from the Asian giant who swarm to France.

More than one million Chinese visitors come every year to France, a country which for them epitomises luxury, romance and quality products.

But that may very well change, said one expert, citing a slew of recent attacks which he says takes the sheen off the "City of Lights" for Chinese visitors.

"This has become a scourge. Since the past year, we have been seeing attacks almost every day," said Jean-Francois Zhou, the head of Ansel Travel, which specialises in tours to and from China.

On March 20, a group of 23 Chinese visitors were robbed in a restaurant shortly after they landed in Paris's Charles De Gaulle airport.

Their passports, plane tickets and cash were stolen and the group leader sustained an injury to the face. Full story...

Moscow to spend $4 million on ensuring good weather on holidays!!!

Authorities in Moscow have revealed they will spend almost $4 million to ensure city residents can enjoy two rain-free national holidays in the coming months.

A notice posted on Thursday on Russia's state tender website calls on companies to apply for the job to provide “meteorological protection for the city.”

The technique of cloud dispersal, or cloud seeding, dates back to the Soviet era. The substances used can include silver iodide, dry ice and cement powder.

Whichever company gets the job can expect payment of around 121 million rubles ($3.9 million).

The holidays that the Moscow administration wants to provide good weather for are Victory Day, on May 9, and Russia Day, on June 12, which are typically celebrated with mass outdoor gathering and parades.

While Muscovites may benefit from the cloud seeding, residents in areas around the city have reported that practice often pushes any prospective poor weather over them. Source...

Electrosensitivity: is technology killing us?

Tim Hallam is just tall enough to seem gangly. His height makes the bedroom feel even smaller than it is. Muddy sunlight filters through the grey gauze hung over his window. His narrow bed appears to be covered with a glistening silver mosquito net. The door and the ceiling are lined with tinfoil. Tim tells me there is also a layer of foil beneath the wallpaper and under the wood-effect flooring. He says, "The room is completely insulated; the edges are sealed with aluminium tape and connected with conducting tape so I could ground the whole room. It's a Faraday cage, effectively. Grounding helps with the low frequencies radiation, apparently. The high frequencies just bounce off the outside."

Tim is trying to escape atmospheric manmade radiation caused by Wi-Fi, phone signals, radio, even TV screens and fluorescent bulbs. It's a hopeless task, he admits: "It's so hard to get away from, and it's taken a toll on my life." I offer to put my phone outside the room and he happily accepts, firmly closing the door. He explains the phone would have kept searching for a signal. "And because it wouldn't find one, it would keep ramping up." With the tinfoil inside his cage, the signal would hurtle around the room like a panicked bird.

Tim estimates he spent £1,000 on the insulation, taking photographs at every stage to share with others via ElectroSensitivity UK, the society for sufferers. He found the whole process stressful, especially after a summer sleeping in the garden of his shared house in Leamington Spa to escape a new flatmate's powerful Wi-Fi router. How did he feel about the flatmate at the time? "Oh, I hated him. It wasn't really him, of course. But I was so angry." Among the symptoms Tim experiences – headaches, muscular pain, dry eyes – there are memory lapses and irritability. He now says his bed is the single most important thing he owns. "I climb in and zip it up so I'm completely sealed. Inside, I sleep extremely well. Without it, my sleep is fragmented, and without sleep, then lots of other things go wrong." Full story...

Jailed for Facebook 'like': Palestinians endure Middle-East-wide 'social media crackdown'

In the last week, two Palestinians have been sentenced to prison terms for online libel and slander of politicians. Meanwhile, an arrest order has been issued for a popular Egyptian satirist, raising fears of a crackdown on freedom in the region.

The Magistrate's Court in Salfit, West Bank, sentenced a 29-year-old Anas Ismail to 6 months in jail, on charges of "libel and slander against former communications minister" as he was found guilty of “Liking” hostile messages towards the politician on Facebook.

One of the posts demanded the dismissal of the politician and another phrase demanded accountability from the minister.

According to Ismail, "Preventive Security locked me up for 17 days, on charges of libel and slander, and last Thursday I was sentenced in absentia by the Court of Salfit to six months in prison,” quotes Alresalah publication.

Ismail, who works in computer programming and is active in social media said "I was summoned 10 times in the past six months over my activity on social networking pages." Full story...

Cyprus, the island that has forgotten how to laugh...

As she counts another day's paltry takings and frets about how to pay the rent, Dimitra Charilaou knows she is a tiny cog in the machine that drives Cyprus's once thriving economy.

She owns a small hole-in-the-wall electrical supplies shop squeezed between a kebab joint and a dodgy-looking nightclub adorned with photos of blonde East European women in the old town of Nicosia, the island's capital.

But multiply her predicament by 850,000 – the population of this former British colony - and it is clear that the island that claims to be the birthplace of Aphrodite, and which has streets named after Greek heroes like Odysseus, is going to need the luck of the gods to avoid plunging off an economic cliff in the wake of last week's controversial bailout deal.

Picking out a €10 note from her cash till, Mrs Charilaou, 59, told The Sunday Telegraph: "This is what I've earned today. My rent is €500 a month, how am I going to pay it? The retail business is bleeding, everybody is shutting down.

"Today it's Cyprus, tomorrow it will be Italy. It will be a domino effect. We use to live peacefully, we had jobs. Now they have changed our lives." Full story...

Lingerie to 'help' women fight sexual offences in India!!!

Three automobile engineers from Chennai have come out with what they claim can check sexual offences in India -- a lingerie laced with modules of GPS and capable of sending alerts to the girl's parents and police.

"The lingerie, laced with modules of global positioning system (GPS), global system for mobile communications (GSM) and also pressure sensors, is capable of sending shock waves of 3,800 kV as well as alerts to the girl's parents and police," says Manisha Mohan, co-developer of the innovative product named Society Harnessing Equipment (SHE).

"The shocks can be emitted up to 82 times," she said, adding it's an apt device which could get women "freedom from situations faced in bus, public places", where at times they are reluctant to walk down to lawmakers for help.

"A person trying to molest a girl will get the shock of his life the moment pressure sensors get activated, and the GPS and GSM modules would send a SMS on emergency number 100, as well as to parents of the girl," she describes the functioning process. Full story...

British woman faces jail in Abu Dhabi for dining with married man...

A BRITISH woman teacher was last night facing jail in Abu Dhabi — for having lunch with a married man.

She was accused of breaking Muslim laws which ban couples who are not wed or related being alone together.

The teacher faces a year in prison in the strict Arab emirate plus more time for drinking alcohol without a licence — after cops who burst into her dining companion's house found her enjoying a glass of wine after their meal.

The unnamed teacher was thrown into a filthy cell and was still awaiting news of her fate last night.

She appeared in court on Wednesday and told a judge she had been introduced to the Syrian man earlier in the day by one of her male colleagues who left the pair to finish their meal. Full story...

Digital 'bitcoin' currency surpasses 20 national currencies in value...

More than $1 billion dollars worth of a digital currency known as "bitcoins" now circulate on the web – an amount that exceeds the value of the entire currency stock of small countries like Liberia (which uses “Liberian dollars”), Bhutan (which uses the “Ngultrum”), and 18 other countries.

So what is a “bitcoin,” and why would anyone use it?

Unlike traditional currency, bitcoins are not issued by a government or even a private company. Instead, the currency is run by computer code that distributes new bitcoins at a set rate to people who devote web servers to keep the code running. The bitcoins are then bought and sold for regular U.S. dollars online.

Bitcoin is in high demand right now -- each bitcoin currently sells for more than $90 U.S. dollars -- which bitcoin insiders say is because of world events that have shaken confidence in government-issued currencies.

“Because of what's going on in Cyprus and Europe, people are trying to pull their money out of banks there,” Tony Gallippi, the CEO “BitPay.com,” which enables businesses to easily accept bitcoins as payment, told FoxNews.com. Full story...

Dying veteran takes parting shot at Bush for Iraq fiasco...

(...)

Medical marijuana eases his discomfort and gives him peace of mind without the side effects of pharmaceutical drugs, Ms Cuellar says.

Mr Young says he wrote to Mr Bush and Mr Cheney on behalf of the wounded veterans and relatives of those killed and injured in Iraq.

"On every level - moral, strategic, military and economic - Iraq was a failure. And it was you, Mr Bush and Mr Cheney, who started this war. It is you who should pay the consequences.

"My day of reckoning is upon me. Yours will come. I hope you will be put on trial. But mostly I hope, for your sakes, that you find the moral courage to face what you have done to me and to many, many others who deserved to live. I hope that before your time on earth ends, as mine is now ending, you will find the strength of character to stand before the American public and the world, and in particular the Iraqi people, and beg for forgiveness."

Cuellar says of the letter: "We just want to share the story of our struggle, which is the story of the struggle and suffering of so many, so that we can begin to look at the realities of the consequences of war." Full story...

The physicist, Denise Milani and the suitcase of cocaine....

In November 2011, Paul Frampton, a theoretical particle physicist, met Denise Milani, a Czech bikini model, on the online dating site mate1.com. She was gorgeous – dark-haired and dark-eyed, with a supposedly natural DDD breast size. In some photos, she looked tauntingly steamy; in others, she offered a warm smile.

Soon, they were chatting online nearly every day. He would return home from campus – he had been a professor in the physics and astronomy department at the University of North Carolina for 30 years – and his computer would buzz. "Are you there, honey?" They'd chat on Yahoo Messenger for a while, then he'd go to the other room to take care of something. A half-hour later, there was the familiar buzz. It was always Milani: "What are you doing now?"

Frampton had been lonely since his divorce three years earlier; now it seemed those days were over. Milani told him she was longing to change her life. She was tired of being a glamour model, of posing in her bikini on the beach while men ogled. She wanted to settle down, have children. But she worried what he thought of her: "Do you think you could ever be proud of someone like me?" Of course he could, he assured her.

Frampton tried to get her to talk on the phone, but she always demurred. When she finally agreed to meet him in person, she asked him to come to La Paz, Bolivia, where she was on a photoshoot. On 7 January 2012, he set out for Bolivia via Toronto and Santiago, Chile. At 68, he dreamed of finding a wife to bear him children – and what a wife. He pictured introducing Milani to colleagues. One thing worried him, though. Full story...

Bangladesh: 'Arrest the atheists who insulted Islam!'

Tens of thousands of Islamic activists prayed on the streets of the Bangladeshi capital today during a rally calling for the introduction of blaspemy laws and the restoration of a caretaker government.

Members of the Islami Andolan Bangladesh are demanding the arrest of 'atheist bloggers who insulted Islam' and to pass laws punishing those who 'insulted Islam in the parliament'.

They have announced plans to 'lay siege' to the office of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on April 25 if their demands are not met.

They include the restoration of the phrase 'absolute trust and faith upon Almighty Allah' in basic principles of the constitution; passing laws to punish atheists; holding of national elections under an impartial government; ensuring good governance and justice, uprooting terrorism and corruption; and establishing Islamic rule for a prosperous and welfare state. Genetic engineering, eugenics and the ideology of the rich...

In order to govern and control a population, apart from the use of violence, people’s consent must be achieved via what Louis Althusser once called ideological state apparatuses: the education system, entertainment, religion, the political system and so on. Noam Chomsky’s book ‘The Manufacture of Consent’ discusses the important role of the media in this, and Antonio Gramsci wrote much about hegemony – the methods used by the dominant class to legitimize their position in the eyes of the ruled over – a kind of ‘consented coercion’ that disguises the true fist of power.

However, possibly the most basic and arguably effective form of social control is eugenics, a philosophy that includes reduced reproductive capacity of ‘less desired’ people.

There is a growing fear that eugenics is being used for the purpose of population control – to get rid of sections of the world population that are ‘surplus to requirements’. In the West, due to automation and the outsourcing of jobs, there is likely to be a large section of the population that will be permanently unemployed or underemployed. In places like China, Africa and India, promoting birth control has been high on the agenda for some decades.

Millionaire US media baron Ted Turner believes a global population of two billion would be ideal and billionaire Bill Gates has pledged hundreds of millions of dollars to improve access to contraception in the developing world. Based on the misguided premise that the world is getting overpopulated, fewer people means elites and the better off can reduce the competition for the resources they covert so much and maintain their current high levels of material consumption. Gates has also purchased shares in Monsanto valued at more than $23 million. His agenda is to help Monsanto get their genetically modified organisms (GMOs) into Africa on a grand scale. Stop photoshopping officials into porn, Chinese authorities ask blackmailers...

What to do when government officials and company bosses are repeatedly blackmailed by people who have Photoshopped their faces into pornographic pictures? Apparently, put up big billboards to tell them that this isn’t cool.

According to Hunan TV, this crime is particularly common in Shuangfeng County, in China’s southeastern Hunan Province, where authorities recently put these billboards up. Last year, 127 such blackmail cases were reported to Shuangfeng police, who arrested 37 suspects, some of whom were allegedly part of four different blackmail gangs. They confiscated more than 30 computers and 300 credit cards. The total amount of money extorted, according to the police, was 45.3 million yuan (about 5.6 million euros). Twenty-three suspects are still at large; the police is urging them to confess before March 31 or face harsh punishment.

Local officials had held a convention in February to discuss the problem, during which the Communist party secretary of Shuangfeng County said “all efforts would be made to cut out the tumour of using modified porn pictures for blackmailing purposes”.

Of course, in a country where the authorities themselves make frequent use of Photoshop to alter reality (see examples here and here), such cases are not limited to Shuangfeng. A recent one in eastern Zheijang province made international headlines when a man was arrested after allegedly attempting to blackmail more than 40 government officials with altered pornographic pictures. And in Xing’an County, in southwestern Guangxi province, the local Land and Resources Bureau took an unusual measure to deter troublemakers: they blurred photos of their officials on their website, reportedly to deter blackmailers. Drug dealer is sentenced to write a 5,000 word essay...

A cannabis dealer is learning his lesson after admitting possession of around 2lb of the drug.

Terry Bennett, 32, was ordered by a judge to write a 5,000 word essay on the dangers of drugs and their effect on society.

Judge Julian Lambert set the assignment because a shoulder injury meant Bennett was unfit to do community work.

The dealer said: “It was a shock to be given such an unusual punishment. It’s been ages since I last wrote an essay.

“I asked the judge if I could write a balanced argument for and against cannabis, but he said that since it’s illegal, I should only write about the bad things.

“I’m just going to write about certain dangers caused by cannabis that people might not necessarily know.” Full story...

KFC fires woman for being homeless...

A Tupelo woman hired earlier this month by a KFC was fired Monday after the franchise owner discovered she’s homeless.

Eunice Jasica has been staying at the Salvation Army lodge since early December after losing her job, her car and her home.

The nonprofit organization requires its residents to seek employment daily and, upon finding it, to pay for lodging and start saving for a place of their own. Jasica said she had been job hunting for months and was relieved to find work on March 11 at the KFC on North Gloster Street.

A document signed by that location’s general manager on March 12 confirms Jasica had been hired to perform “prep work” and would receive a paycheck every two weeks.

But when Jasica reported for duty Monday, franchise owner Chesley Ruff withdrew the job offer upon learning she lived at the Salvation Army. Full story...

How big corporations are unpatriotic...

Many giant profitable U.S. corporations are increasingly abandoning America while draining it at the same time.

General Electric, for example, has paid no federal income taxes for a decade while becoming a net job exporter and fighting its hard-pressed workers who want collective bargaining through unions like the United Electrical Workers Union (UE). GE’s boss, Jeffrey Immelt, makes about $12,400 an hour on an 8-hour day, plus benefits and perks, presiding over this global corporate empire.

Telling by their behavior, these big companies think patriotism toward the country where they were created and prospered is for chumps. Their antennae point to places where taxes are very low, labor is wage slavery, independent unions are non-existent, governments have their hands out, and equal justice under the rule of law does not exist. China, for example, has fit that description for over 25 years.

Other than profiteering from selling Washington very expensive weapons of mass destruction, many multinational firms have little sense of true national security. Full story...

Cyber currency surge amid Eurozone crisis...

As the eurozone is rocked by the crisis in Cyprus, a cyber currency called Bitcoin has seen a surge in popularity from people looking for an alternative place to invest their money.

Bitcoins are basically virtual money which can be earned or bought. They were created four years ago by a hacker who remains anonymous.

There are no banks to control them, people just exchange them directly with each other over the internet. That makes them difficult to tax, trace or freeze.

In the last month, the Bitcoin has more than doubled in value.

It is claimed the surge is partly down to people in cash-strapped countries including Spain and Greece turning to Bitcoins in the hope of protecting their money. Full story...

Girl, 14, raped by two men on bus in Glasgow...

Investigations are continuing after a teenage girl was raped by two men on a double decker bus in Glasgow.

The attack happened on the top deck of the 57 bus as it left the Silverburn shopping centre in Pollok, Glasgow, at about 22:30 last Friday night.

The 14-year-old sat downstairs with a friend but then moved to the upper deck where she was assaulted and raped by two men.

Police have appealed for other passengers to come forward.

Bus operator First Glasgow said the driver was unaware of the assault but ejected the two men involved later in the journey due to separate unruly behaviour. Full story...

French workers hold company heads captive after they’re fired without pay...

Workers at a French greetings card firm on Friday sequestered the head of their company and the chief of the Dutch firm which owns it after sacked employees were told they would not get their dues.

The protest at the office of French firm Edit66 and the Dutch owner Mercurius, targeted their two chiefs Paul Denis and Merthus Bezemer.

The firm, which has been facing financial problems, is based in the southern French city of Cabestany.

It was bought by Mercurius in the early 1990s and once counted 60 workers but recently employed only 37, of whom 19 were laid off.

The trouble began Friday when the management told those laid off that they would not be given their severance dues agreed earlier “as there is no money,” Danielle Casanovas, from the company’s works council said. Full story...

Why butter is a health food...

Butter is a health food. There, I said it. I don’t just love butter because it tastes better than margarine. I don’t just love it because I think it’s a healthier alternative than margarine. I actually believe, bones to britches, that butter is good for you.

The other day someone left this comment on a Facebook post of mine, “Only an idiot would believe butter is actually a health food. Yes, it’s better than margarine, but it is by no means good for you.” Only an idiot? Really?

Name-calling aside, let’s use our brains. Shall we? What makes butter a health food?

After years of being told that margarine was more “heart-healthy” than butter, we’re now discovering in long-term studies that the science simply just doesn’t back up the claim. Full story...

Chinese gamer spends six years in internet cafe...

A Chinese video game addict has spent the last six years living in an internet cafe, according to reports.

Li Meng apparently almost never leaves his chair, except to buy food and take the occasional shower, at the cafe in China’s north-east city of Changchun, in the Jilin province.

Reports suggest the ‘bespectacled youth clearly hadn’t been to a hairdresser for a long time’.

One person told the Beijing Times: ‘He generally comes at night to play the game, gets sleepy during the day and sleeps here. From time to time will be out to take a bath.’

He is thought to have supported himself by selling virtual goods for real money.

He apparently has a monthly income of 2,000 yen, or £212, of which £53 is paid as a fee to the cafe every month. Full story...

Facial recognition and GPS tracking: TrapWire company conducting even more surveillance...

An internationally-spread Orwellian surveillance system uncovered by RT has been linked to a software company that collects the GPS coordinates of cell phone users in over 100 major cities.

The discovery of the TrapWire risk mitigation program last year and its ability to match human faces caught on camera against massive databases of intelligence led to an outcry from privacy advocates around the world. Now once again the burgeoning preponderance of Big Brother is being put into perspective.

In late 2011, members of the loose-knit hacktivist group Anonymous pilfered data from the servers of private intelligence firm Stratfor that were in turn handed over to the whistleblower website WikiLeaks for dissemination. When internal emails alluding to a service called TrapWire surfaced in the leak, an investigation uncovered a program that, according to the company’s founder, “can collect information about people and vehicles that is more accurate than facial recognition.”

TrapWire developers Abraxas later became the subject of several investigative reports by RT and others, and further analysis revealed that that company was acquired in 2010 by technology giants Cubic Corporation of Southern California. Cubic would eventually deny any affiliation ever existed between their San Diego headquarters and the spy-program discussed by Stratfor execs, but links were nevertheless still evident. A Department of Homeland Security website, in fact, all but affirmed that TrapWire was being sold to government agencies as a product of Abraxas as recently as February 2011. Full story...

Earthworms and polar bears now blamed for global warming!!! WTF!

The world of global warming alarmists is increasingly resembling a madhouse, with conservationists falling over each other trying to salvage the last shreds of credibility. Very funny. What makes the situation hilarious, is the fact many eco-zealots inadvertently put out increasingly panicking publications that look more like satires than studies.

As the Daily Caller reported on in February of this year, a new foe has been appointed to “accelerate” global warming: earthworms.Yes, you’ve heard it right. Earthworms. Besides the fact that there is no global warming, and therefore the very premise is faulty, earthworms are now joining the growing list of evildoers who get the blame for global warming. The report states:

“Earthworms play an essential part in determining the greenhouse-gas balance of soils worldwide, and their influence is expected to grow over the next decades,’ reads the abstract. “They are thought to stimulate carbon sequestration in soil aggregates, but also to increase emissions of the main greenhouse gases carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide.”

O my Lord. The earthworm has now outweighed the other prime candidate, the sun. And it seems the rise of the earthworm knows no limits: Full story...

Facebook and the disintegration of the human...

According to a New York Times article by Jan Hoffman referencing a study of the Facebook profiles of 200 university students in the United States, approximately 30 percent of the students “posted updates that met the American Psychiatric Association’s criteria for a symptom of depression, reporting feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness, insomnia or sleeping too much, and difficulty concentrating”. These findings are said to “echo research that suggests depression is increasingly common among college students”.

Hoffman’s point is that Facebook can therefore serve as an “early warning system for timely intervention” by parents and therapists. The article ends with a quote from a mother in Ohio: “Facebook might be a pain in the neck to keep up with… But having that extra form of communication saves lives”.

No mention is made of the obvious exacerbating influence of social networking sites when it comes to phenomena such as insomnia and concentration difficulty. Rather than promote Facebook as a life-saving tool, one could easily argue that such forums and other technological distractions in fact contribute to depressive trends. Full story...

State-backed cyberattacks now aim at destruction, not just spying...

American Express customers trying to gain access to their online accounts Thursday were met with blank screens or an ominous ancient type face. The company confirmed that its Web site had come under attack.

The assault, which took American Express offline for two hours, was the latest in an intensifying campaign of unusually powerful attacks on American financial institutions that began last September and have taken dozens of them offline intermittently, costing millions of dollars.

JPMorgan Chase was taken offline by a similar attack this month. And last week, a separate, aggressive attack incapacitated 32,000 computers at South Korea’s banks and television networks.

The culprits of these attacks, officials and experts say, appear intent on disabling financial transactions and operations.

Corporate leaders have long feared online attacks aimed at financial fraud or economic espionage, but now a new threat has taken hold: attackers, possibly with state backing, who seem bent on destruction. Full story...

Swedish store slammed for Facebook 'thief' pic...

An Ica grocery store in Västra Götaland in western Sweden has been criticised after publishing a surveillance camera photo of a suspected thief on its Facebook page with the comment 'nice that you like our lamb and beef'.

The Facebook post on Thursday immediately began attracting comments, including several of a racist nature, according to a report in the Aftonbladet daily.

Several others pointed out the dubious legality of publishing the surveillance camera material and The Association of ICA-retailers (Ica-handlarnas Förbund) condemned the move.

"It is highly inappropriate and nothing that we would support. Regardless of whether it is illegal or not it is not appropriate to do so under the Ica brand," said Staffan Ekengren at the association to the newspaper.

"This is definitely something we will look into," he added. Full story...

Egyptian female cartoonist pokes fun at fundamentalists...

One of the women who spoke at the Women’s Assembly during the World Social Forum in Tunisia was not a political activist, but a cartoonist. Dooa Eladl is 34-year-old Egyptian woman who calls herself a Muslim anarchist. Her work appears in the prominent newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm She has become one of Egypt’s best-known political cartoonists, in a field completely dominated by men. (One of her humorous drawings is a portrait of herself marching to work, her hair tied to the mustaches of four of her male colleagues.)

During the Egyptian uprising, Eladl and her colleagues supported the revolution by printing up some of their fiercest political satire, the kind that would not have been published, and handing them out in Tahrir Square. “I don’t think artists like myself should be members of political parties or organizers, but we should certainly use our art to speak out against injustice and oppression.”

Eladl’s blistering caricatures have landed her in hot water with some of Egypt’s powerful fundamentalists. She now has the distinction of being the first cartoonist in Egypt to face blasphemy charges. In 2012 Salafi lawyer Khaled El-Masry, Secretary General of a group called National Center for Defense of Freedoms, filed a complaint against her for defaming religious prophets. The cartoon he objected to shows an Egyptian man with angel wings lecturing Adam and Eve. The man is telling Adam and Eve that they would never have been expelled from heaven if they had simply voted in favor of the Brotherhood’s draft constitution in the recent Egyptian referendum. The court has not yet heard the case. Full story...

And Hollywood's latest bad guys are... the North Koreans!

Hollywood’s rules about foreign villains have never really changed. The studios choose bad guys from countries where they have no economic stake… or from Britain. They go to extraordinary lengths not to compromise the commercial prospects of their movies by offending audiences in the countries where they are being shown. Their sensitivity has never extended to the Brits. They realise that we will go and see their films regardless, even if an Alan Rickman or a Basil Rathbone, a Claude Rains, a George Sanders or a Jeremy Irons is cast as the latest version of the devil incarnate.

We Brits remain hardy perennials in Hollywood’s hit parade of torturers, bombers, kidnappers and general all-round troublemakers but the nationality of the other villains of choice is in a constant state of flux. The Germans had the top villainous spot for obvious reasons in the middle part of the last century. Russians in the Cold War were a reliable source of antagonists. The French – “cheese-eating surrender monkeys” as they were demonised during the dark days of George W Bush – have flitted in and out of focus. The Japanese were bad guys in the Second World War and then again in the 1980s and 1990s, when their car and electronics manufacturers were drubbing their American competitors.

With the US studios desperate to establish a foothold in the fast growing Chinese market, it is clearly a very bad idea to have too many films with heroic Rambo types taking on Red Army soldiers, opium smugglers or cyber hackers. The same applies to the Middle Eastern and North African market. India (through the Reliance Group) is already helping bankroll big American movies. Full story...

Rajasthan: 5 of a family commit suicide believing they will meet god...

Superstition and blind faith can prove to be fatal. A family of five people in Sawai Madhopur district of Rajasthan consumed poison and died in the belief that they would meet god.

The family of a photographer Kanchan Singh residing in Gangapur city consumed cyanide laced laddoos on Thursday. Singh also made a video of the entire incident and was even seen telling his family how he tried to meet Lord Shiva in heaven but failed. The family members who died include Singh's wife, three children and his engineer brother.

In fact the entire family was extremely religious and used to observe every festivals and religious ceremonies. They even watched only religious serials and shows on TV and the children were extremely influenced by a serial on Lord Shiva. The entire matter came to light after the police examined the video.

Before committing suicide Singh made a video of each and every member of the family and asked them why they wanted to die and also about their feelings.
