Girls now reaching puberty at age nine, thanks to chemicals in the food supply...
The average age of puberty in girls is now nine, in a phenomenon increasingly being blamed on rising obesity and exposure to hormone-disrupting pollutants in the food supply.
The study was conducted in 2006 by researchers from the world-renowned Department of Growth and Reproduction at University Hospital in Copenhagen, Denmark. The researchers found that among 1,000 girls, the average age of breast development was nine years and 10 months, a full year earlier than when a similar study was conducted in 1991. More...

Explicit sex books 'help drop in Uganda's HIV rate'
The book How Kwezi Got Into Trouble has a picture on the cover of a girl sobbing into a tissue at a school desk.
So when I saw it, I thought Kwezi might have got into trouble for handing her homework in late, or perhaps she had been copying somebody else's exam paper.
Then I looked at the text on the back cover and got quite a shock. It read: "At her mother's funeral, Kwezi is raped by her late father's best friend.
"Kwezi has no-one to tell but her mother lying in the grave. Though she gets Aids, Kwezi is determined to let other pupils know how dangerous Aids is."
It is a surprising storyline for a book aimed at eight-to-10-year-olds. More...

MP calls for an Internet "bill of rights" against Big Brother Google, Facebook...
"Private companies seem to have acquired the right to photograph what goes on in people's gardens. That is a dangerous shift, because if no one has any right to privacy, we will soon be living - dare I say it? - with a privatised version of Big Brother run by some of the internet companies. That is the scenario slowly creeping up on us. I say that because many of my observations today will focus on Google's activities, such as street-mapping, accessing people's personal wi-fi addresses, and-as we learned from newspapers and Google's official blog a few days ago-the harvesting of personal e-mail addresses and passwords." This week, a group of blind air travelers filed suit against United Airlines claiming that the airline's digital kiosks are inaccessible to blind people.

A more sinister pattern of corruption emerging in India...
In the old days, corruption scandals would follow a familiar pattern. A minister would take a bribe from a businessman to either use his discretion and bend the law or to release some scarce resource. A rival businessman would leak the story to the media and a public uproar would follow.
To some extent, that pattern still endures. The allegation against telecom minister D. Raja is that he accepted bribes (according to some accounts, as much as Rs 300 crore per deal) to award licenses to businessmen who were willing to line the minister’s pockets.
But what worries me is that a new pattern of corruption is emerging. Two of the biggest scandals to have rocked India in recent weeks – the Commonwealth Games loot and the Adarsh Building Society scam – differ from the familiar pattern. Their DNA is different from the traditional scandal and they suggest that the virus of corruption is mutating into a different, more dangerous shape. More...

Segregation of Jews and Arabs in 2010 Israel is almost absolute...
Under the guise of the deceptively mundane name "Amendment to the Cooperative Associations Bill," the Knesset's Constitution, Law and Justice Committee this week finalized a bill intended to bypass previous rulings of the High Court of Justice. If indeed this legislation is approved by the Knesset plenum, it will not be possible to describe it as anything other than an apartheid law.
Ten years ago, the High Court of Justice ordered the town of Katzir to accept the family of Adel and Iman Kaadan, Arab citizens of Israel, as members of the community. Seven years later, the court issued a similar ruling against the Galilee village of Rakefet, which, like Katzir, is Jewish. Now, however, the legislature has come up with a proper "Zionist" response to the justices: If it becomes law, the amendment will give acceptance committees of communal villages the authority to limit residence in their towns exclusively to Jews. The unnamed man also said McDonald's offered free lunches to employees. The ruling against McDonald's was signed on Tuesday by a judge in Porto Alegre. McDonald's can appeal . Source...

Airport security checks have gone too far...
Many airport security checks are ‘completely redundant’ and should be scrapped, travel industry chiefs demanded yesterday.
They want a regime which treats all travellers as potential terrorists to be axed.
Millions suffer delays and indignity as they submit to the stringent checks demanded by U.S. security authorities.
Many are forced to remove their shoes or are subjected to full-body scans or pat-down searches, and all have to follow tough rules on carrying liquids. More...

Pandemics, Aliens, and Asteroids -- Oh My! It appears that the corporate-government-media has recently become the number one propagator of conspiracy theories. That is, of course, as long as the fear campaign pushes the right buttons for the agenda.

Courtesy in Singapore and Indonesia...
Some years ago an old British headmaster, frustrated at the behavior of local students, said to me that “Indonesian does not have a word for “courtesy’”.
I would translate courtesy as santun, a borrowed Javanese word implying its culture’s most admirable behavior — speaking and acting politely. Courtesy, however, covers other aspects not covered by the concept of santun — respect and consideration.
Indonesians love to think of themselves as a nation of polite and friendly people. We have helpful people who offer service with a smile. We speak politely and address all strangers as “sir”, “madam”, and “big brother/sister”. Schoolchildren are told that tourists love Indonesia because of its friendliness and politeness. More...
