More video footage of atrocities against Tamils in Sri Lanka...

Three months after Sri Lanka declared victory over the Tamil Tigers, Channel 4 News broadcast footage apparently showing government troops summarily executing Tamils during the final push of the war.

Now damning material concerning the behaviour of government troops in the country's civil war has emerged.

The video shows the same incident as one aired 16 months ago by Channel 4 News which the Sri Lankan government maintains was fake. It showed the execution of bound men on a muddy track, purportedly defeated Tamil prisoners. A UN investigation later found that the video "appeared authentic". More...

Iranian footballer's ''temporary wife'' faces execution...

Amnesty International has said the "temporary wife" of an Iranian footballer is to be executed on Wednesday for the murder of the man's permanent wife and has called for the punishment to be halted.

Citing Iranian media reports, the London-based rights group said the lawyer of Khadijeh "Shala" Jahed has said she is to be executed in Tehran's Evin prison at dawn, and it suggested she might have been wrongly convicted.

"Shahla Jahed must be spared execution. The death penalty represents the ultimate denial of human rights," Malcolm Smart, Amnesty director for the Middle East and North Africa, said in a statement. More...

Is Facebook tracking you ... even if you don't have a Facebook account?

A researcher from a Dutch university is warning that Facebook's 'Like This' button is watching your every move.

Arnold Roosendaal, who is a doctoral candidate at the Tilburg University for Law, Technology and Society, warns that Facebook is tracking and tracing everyone, whether they use the social networking site or not.

Roosendaal says that Facebook's tentacles reach way beyond the confines of its own web sites and subscriber base because more and more third party sites are using the 'Like This' button and Facebook Connect. More...

TSA agent criticizes airport pat-downs...

Passengers may be unhappy over long lines and enhanced security at the airports, but it’s a feeling shared by many at TSA.

“There’s a lot more tension both by officers, fellow officers, and passengers,” one Pittsburgh TSA officer told KDKA’s Jon Delano in an exclusive interview.

TSA officers don’t like the new aggressive pat-downs of passengers either.

Gaddafi travels with 'voluptuous' blonde nurse...

Veteran Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi fears flying over water, prefers staying on the ground floor and almost never travels without his trusted Ukrainian nurse, a "voluptuous blonde", according to US documents released on Sunday by WikiLeaks.

Gaddafi's eccentric and unpredictable personality are on full display in a State Department cable, which was posted on the New York Times website, a small sampling of the more than 250,00 documents unveiled by WikiLeaks on Sunday despite Washington's protests.

The cable from September 2009 describes how Gaddafi's preferences for shorter flights and accommodation on the ground floor created logistical headaches for his staff, and that the Libyan leader never travelled without a certain Ukrainian nurse at his side. More...

Is Wi-Fi frying our brains? The dangers of 'electrosmog'

As winter arrives with a vengeance, the last of this year’s glorious autumn leaves are falling in our parks and woodlands.

But this week came worrying evidence that Mother Nature is not the only force denuding our trees of their foliage.

Research in the Netherlands suggested that outbreaks of bleeding bark and dying leaves which have blighted the country’s urban trees may be caused by radiation from the Wi-Fi networks now so integral to life in offices, schools and homes. More...

Air India pilot panicked as planed nosedived...

A co-pilot sent an international passenger jet into a terrifying nosedive when he adjusted his seat and accidentally pushed the control column forward, an official report revealed yesterday.

The clumsy officer then panicked and was unable to let the captain, who had gone on a toilet break, back into the cockpit as the plane plunged 7000 feet (2000 metres).

The captain only saved the Boeing 737 aircraft after using an emergency code to get through the cockpit door and take the controls back from the co-pilot, the report by India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said. More...

Asian men, white women and a taboo that must be broken...

Horrific sexual crimes against young girls were committed by a paedophile gang in Derby, a place I hardly know. Several gang members were convicted and sent down. These urban predators stalked and "chose" their victims, took them for ice creams and nice meals (treats some of the lasses had never had), drove them around in flash cars, handed out drink and cigarettes, drugged their trusting prey, then raped them over and over again, threatening them with hammers, and worse, if they told.

(...)

The Derby gang was all Asian except for one seasoned white abuser. Most of the Asians were Muslim Pakistanis and – apart from a few Asian and mixed-race girls who fell into their nets – their victims were almost all white. Because I am Asian and "a fucking Muslim" and the rapists were my people committing a "Paki" crime against white females, I am guilty too, apparently, part of the evil posse.

(...)

Most Asian men do not go around raping young white girls and women; many have happy and equal relationships with white partners. However, an alarming number of Asian individuals, families and communities do believe that white females have no morals, are free and available, deserving of no respect or protection. Full story...

Americans, I have some bad news for you...

Americans, I have some bad news for you:

You have the worst quality of life in the developed world – by a wide margin.

If you had any idea of how people really lived in Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and many parts of Asia, you’d be rioting in the streets calling for a better life. In fact, the average Australian or Singaporean taxi driver has a much better standard of living than the typical American white-collar worker.

I know this because I am an American, and I escaped from the prison you call home.

I have lived all around the world, in wealthy countries and poor ones, and there is only one country I would never consider living in again: The United States of America. The mere thought of it fills me with dread. More...

Saudi Grand Mufti uses haj sermon to condemn fanaticism and violence...

The haj sermon this year – one of the highlights of the three-day pilgrimage that millions of Muslims make to Mecca every year – has received special attention in the media all over the Muslim world. Excerpts from the sermon, which condemns terrorism and extremism and advocates moderation, have been reproduced in hundreds of newspapers. Videos of the sermon with English subtitles are circulating widely by email and have been posted on websites like YouTube. It seems that the Muslim world has embraced the message enthusiastically.

The haj is a transformative experience for most Muslims. The African American civil rights leader Malcolm X abandoned his anti-white views after participating in the haj and had a huge impact on Muslim youth throughout the United States. More...

Foreigners alarmed by Swiss expulsion vote...

Swiss voters’ decision to adopt tough new regulations on the deportation of non-Swiss convicted of serious crimes has provoked widespread concern among foreigners.

The complete idiot's guide to WikiLeaks latest document dump...

Wikileaks, following much media fanfare (reason for suspicion right there) has just released a huge number of documents supposedly leaked to WikiLeaks and no other websites'. The media is denouncing this as a threat to the United States while US politicians wring their hands and wonder when they will be free of the curse of the First Amendment and all that troublesome nonsense about Freedom of Speech. Many observers think this is a propaganda set up and that neither Julian Assange or WikiLaeks should be taken at face value. The dullness of the WikiLeaks “revelations.”

The “revelations” in the latest download from WikiLeaks strike me as surprisingly dull. You would have thought that, in 250,000 pages of diplomatic cables, there would be insights that were a bit more startling than the suggestions that Angela Merkel is cautious, Silvio Berlusconi is vain, Nicolas Sarkozy is thin-skinned and David Cameron is a bit of a lightweight. Tell me something, I didn’t know.

It may be that, as people trawl through the data, they come across something genuinely interesting. For the moment, however. the only thing that made me raise even half an eyebrow was the suggestion that the Saudis and the other Gulf Arabs are pushing the Americans to bomb Iran. The Israelis have been saying that this is the Saudi position for ages - but, hitherto, I’ve always taken that with a pinch of salt, since it is obviously in Israel’s interests to mkae that case. So it is a bit surprising to find out that the Saudis really do seem to want a strike on Iran.

Other than that, I’m distinctly underwhelmed by WikiLeaks. But perhaps I’ve missed something fascinating. All comments and pointers welcome. Source...

Teacher in Mumbai school taught kids how to ... French kiss???

Fifteen out of the 50 children enrolled at Eurokids nursery school, Yari Road, have been withdrawn from the school. Their parents have demanded that Sana Saiyani, a teacher who allegedly molested the tiny tots on October 22, should be blacklisted and the school should refund their fees.

The parents have termed a 60-day probe launched by the school as “misleading”. The teachers have blocked the parents from their Facebook accounts. Delhi has held its first annual gay pride since homosexuality was legalised with thousands of people taking part in a parade in the Indian capital on Sunday.

Around 2,000 people joined the event with rainbow flags, banners and drums; some in demonstration at continued stigmatisation of gays, and some in celebration of the decriminalisation of homosexuality in the country, which was passed last year.

Although a march was held earlier this year in celebration of the change in legislation, the third annual gay pride held on Sunday becomes the first of its kind in Delhi since the colonial-era law was overturned. More...

Body scanners are more dangerous than Feds admit...

The growing outrage over the Transportation Security Administration’s new policy of backscatter scanning of airline passengers and “enhanced pat-downs” brings to mind these wise words from President Ronald Reagan: “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help you.’”

So, what is all the concern really about — will these radiation scanners increase your risk of cancer or other diseases? A group of scientists and professors from the University of California at San Francisco voiced their concern to Obama’s science and technology adviser John Holdren in a well-stated letter back in April.

The group included experts in radiation biology, biophysics, and imaging, who expressed “serious concerns” about the “dangerously high” dose of radiation to the skin. More...

ear after year, the 42-year-old Saudi surgeon remains single, against her will. Her father keeps turning down marriage proposals, and her hefty salary keeps going directly to his bank account.

The surgeon in the holy city of Medina knows her father, also her male guardian, is violating Islamic law by forcibly keeping her single, a practice known as "adhl." So she has sued him in court, with questionable success.

Adhl cases reflect the many challenges facing single women in Saudi Arabia. But what has changed is that more women are now coming forward with their cases to the media and the law. Dozens of women have challenged their guardians in court over adhl, and one has even set up a Facebook group for victims of the practice. More...

Indian airline had kids sitting on parents' laps during flight!!!

Can an airline allow passengers to seat children on their laps, like infants, to pack in flyers beyond capacity? Shocking as it may sound, the government’s aviation safety regulator on Thursday warned a leading low-cost carrier after finding seven children had been seated on their parents’ laps on a flight.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) asked the airline to sack staffers who let grown up children fly as infants. While children up to two years of age can fly seated on a parent’s lap, those between two and 12 years of age have to be given a seat as per safety norms and also for the comfort of fellow passengers. In India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, independent journalism is a real risk...

South Asia's media landscape is rich, diverse and contradictory. Yet the risks to independent journalism are real, and show no signs of abating.

It would be an understatement to say this has been a difficult year for journalists in the subcontinent. In Pakistan at least a dozen media professionals have died in terrorist attacks throughout the country. At least one journalist, Vijay Pratap Singh, has died in India as a result of similar violence.

Equally deadly has been the fate of the few journalists in Sri Lanka brave enough to challenge the government's narrative of a clean and effective war against the erstwhile Tamil Tigers. Lasantha Wickrematunge, who was critical of the Rajapaksa government, was shot dead after numerous run-ins with authorities over his reportage. More...

Whoopi Goldberg: TSA ‘Opt-Out Day’ was an act of terrorism!!! WTF!

Whoopi Goldberg may have just won the title of the TSA’s most rigorous celebrity supporter in this late-autumn junk-touching scandal. After admitting she didn’t mind a good “squeeze” to Mike Huckabee last week, the View co-host took a hard line of attack on the proposed TSA “Opt-Out Day” protest scheduled for the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. That event was not only rude, Goldberg contends– it was terrorism. More..

US shuts down websites in piracy crackdown...

In what appears to be the latest phase of a far-reaching federal crackdown on online piracy of music and movies, the Web addresses of a number of sites that facilitate illegal file-sharing were seized this week by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a division of the Department of Homeland Security.

By Friday morning, visiting the addresses of a handful of sites that either hosted unauthorized copies of films and music or allowed users to search for them elsewhere on the Internet produced a notice that said, in part: “This domain name has been seized by ICE — Homeland Security Investigations, pursuant to a seizure warrant issued by a United States District Court.” More...

Buy Nothing Day, an international protest against unbridled consumerism, is being marked on Saturday in more than 60 countries, including Switzerland.

swissinfo.ch speaks to the Swiss event’s organiser, the founder of a Buy Nothing Christmas initiative and asks a retail expert whether it’s all just a waste of time.

“The philosophy is to object to the current trend, dictated to us by most Western governments, that a good citizen is one who buys a lot,” said Pietro Majno from the Swiss Growth Objection Network, which is organising events across the country. More...

Egyptian lesbian teen in UK fights deportation...

Campaigners are raising funds for a gay Egyptian teenager's fight for UK asylum with the applicant believing she’ll “have to live in hiding” if she is deported.

Shrouk El-Attar, 18, has lived in the UK for three years after moving to Cardiff with her family, but she is now facing deportation as first her mother’s and then her own applications for asylum were denied.

The Home Office rejected el-Attar’s application last month, and she is currently being housed by the Border Agency while her case awaits a hearing at the High Court. More...

Black Friday shopping rampage in the USA...

Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, traditionally the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Especially popular in the United States, the event is spreading to other nations such as Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom. On this day, many retailers open very early, often at 4 a.m., or earlier, and offer promotional sales to kick off the shopping season. Black Friday is not actually a holiday, but many employers give their employees the day off, increasing the number of potential shoppers. It has routinely been the busiest shopping day of the year since 2005, although news reports, which at that time were inaccurate, have described it as the busiest shopping day of the year for a much longer period of time. "I didn't kill her. I killed the demon inside her," Michael Brea, 31, told the Daily News from a hospital prison ward where he was being held after his arrest on murder and other charges.

"I just kept cutting her. No one could stop me. I was doing the work of God," he told the paper. More...

The sun is now owned by a Spanish woman!!!

After billions of years the Sun finally has an owner. A woman from Spain's soggy region of Galicia said Friday she had registered the star at a local notary public as being her property.

Angeles Duran, 49, told the online edition of daily El Mundo she took the step in September after reading about an American man who had registered himself as the owner of the moon and most planets in our solar system.

There is an international agreement which states that no country may claim ownership of a planet or star, but it says nothing about individuals, she added. More...

The hidden cost of Facebook's messaging system...

AS THE DUST SETTLES on Facebook's entrance as a would be big hitter in the world of electronic communications, the reactions to its plans render a stark image of the power of capitalism and conformity over privacy.

Prior to Facebook's announcement, the news was all about the social network's 'Gmail killer'. Following the announcement, in which Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg stressed repeatedly that his firm's system won't be just email, but rather a system that will offer users a way to contact others by using names as identifiers, the blind acceptance that all this is in some way a good thing was shocking.

On the surface what Zuckerberg outlined sounds great, a single place for communication, a simple identifier that you should already know, and of course everyone is already on Facebook - well, 500 million of us. But step away from the marketeer's view of an effortless, connected, whitewashed utopia and it really doesn't take long to realise why Facebook is going to so much effort to get into the messaging business, and that realisation paints a horrible picture of greed and the public acting as a large mass of 'yes men' and docile consumers.
