Former Chinese gymnast and Olympic hopeful Zhang Shangwu has been found begging on the street, prompting criticism of the country's treatment of athletes.
The 27-year-old had been tipped for glory at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens after winning two gold medals at the World University championships in 2001, but in 2002 Zhang broke his left Achilles tendon in training.
He never fully recovered and was forced to retire in 2005 with a small pay-off from the government, but with little education and still suffering the effects of his injury Zhang was forced to sell his medals for just £10, before eventually turning to crime. More...
