The Indian land grab in Africa...

Indian companies venturing abroad is always regarded as a healthy trend, an indicator of India's new-found economic status. But little is known about how these companies are flexing their imperalistic muscles in poorer countries, grabbing the land and giving little in return. A report ‘India’s Role in the New Global Farmland Grab’ by researcher Rick Rowden brings forth these atrocities which are shockingly similar to what India used to blame rich western countires for.

Joiing the race with China, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, South Korea and the European Union, Indian and Indian-owned companies are acquiring land in Africa at throwaway prices, indulging in enviornmental damange and exporting the food while locals continue to starve. The origin of this unhealthy practice can be traced back to the food crisis of 2008 when rich countries were forced to confront the reality of how fragile the global food scenario can be, especially for those without sufficient cultivable land. To ensure more direct control over food, these countries started acquiring land in poorer African countries and shipping the produce back home. A recent World Bank report found that 45 million hectares of large scale farmland deals had been announced between 2008 and 2009.

The initial support to such forays was based on the belief that the world is facing scarce food supply because of long-term under-investment in the agricultural sectors of many developing countries. However, as stressed by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, "the diagnosis and remedy are incorrect…Hunger and malnutrition are not primarily the result of insufficient food production; they are the result of poverty and inequality, particularly in rural areas, where 75 per cent of the world’s poor still reside.” Full story...

You don't need a uni degree if you are good-looking...

A team at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg in northern Germany questioned more than 3,000 people about their career, and compared this with rankings of how attractive they were.

The results suggest that being one point more attractive was worth a three percent wage hike, while being five points more attractive boosted a career by the same amount as having a university degree.

Professor Christian Pfeifer said his study, published this week in the Applied Economics Letters journal, also showed that the importance of looks in the workplace was even more important for men than it was for women.

He took the 2008 German General Social Survey (Allbus) conducted by the Leibniz Institute for Social Sciences, which asked more than 3,000 people about their professional status and how attractive they considered themselves to be. Full story...

Rape in the US military: America's dirty little secret...

"It was eight years before I was able to say the word that describes what happened to me," says Maricella Guzman. "I hadn't even been in the Navy a month. I was so young. I tried to report it. But instead of being taken seriously, I was forced to do push-ups."

"I can't sleep without drugs," says Kate Weber. "But even then, I often wake up in the middle of the night, crying, my mind racing. And I lie there awake in the dark, reliving the rape, looking for a second chance for it to end with a different outcome, but he always wins."

Rape within the US military has become so widespread that it is estimated that a female soldier in Iraq is more likely to be attacked by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire. So great is the issue that a group of veterans are suing the Pentagon to force reform. The lawsuit, which includes three men and 25 women (the suit initially involved 17 plaintiffs but grew to 28) who claim to have been subjected to sexual assaults while serving in the armed forces, blames former defence secretaries Donald Rumsfeld and Robert Gates for a culture of punishment against the women and men who report sex crimes and a failure to prosecute the offenders. Liverpool's Suarez banned for racial abuse...

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has been banned for eight matches and fined 40,000 pounds for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra during a Premier League match at Anfield in October, the FA said on Tuesday.

Uruguay international Suarez was found guilty of misconduct after using "insulting words" towards Evra during the game on October 15, including a reference to the France defender's colour.

The ban is suspended pending the outcome of any appeal lodged by Suarez after an FA Independent Regulatory Commission "found a charge of misconduct against Luis Suarez proven."

The FA announced the decision against Suarez, who has repeatedly denied the allegations, on its website (www.thefa.com) after a hearing that began on December 14 at an undisclosed location in north-west England. Full story...

Pakistan honour killings reach 675 this year...

At least 675 honour killings have been carried out in Pakistan during the first nine months of this year, according to a human rights group which is calling for urgent steps to protect women and girls.

The shocking tally highlights the scale of violence against women in conservative, rural parts of the Muslim country, where rape victims are routinely sentenced to death by village elders and murderers can escape court by paying blood money.

Zohra Yusuf, chairperson of The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, said too many cases were dismissed by police as private, family affairs.

"It is one of the signs of a paternalistic and feudal society," she said. Full story...

Outcry grows as Cairo violence enters fifth day...

Clashes between Egyptian security forces and protesters demanding an end to military rule entered a fifth day on Tuesday, as US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton denounced the beating of women as a "disgrace."

Riot police and protesters hurled stones at each other, and police fired shots to disperse demonstrators through the night and into the morning, witnesses said, in violence that has left at least 12 people dead since Friday.

The ruling military council on Monday denied it had given orders to use force against protesters but admitted that troops had beaten a veiled woman after having ripped her clothes to reveal her bra, sparking nationwide outrage.

Footage circulating on social networking sites showed army troops beating protesters, sometimes leaving their bodies motionless on the ground, but it is the beating of women that has enraged the country. Full story...

Dutch TV hosts eat each other's flesh...

Bringing a grim twist to the concept of cookery shows, two Dutch TV presenters have been left with a bad taste in their mouth after they were filmed eating each other's flesh in front of a live TV audience.

The presenter duo Dennis Storm and Valerio Zeno from the show aptly named, Proefkonijnen (meaning 'Guinea Pigs'), both had surgery to remove a small piece of muscle from their body.

They were then challenged to eat each other's body part - one from the backside and the other from the abdomen - while answering a series of silly questions. More + video...

At least 106 journalists were killed in 2011, among them 20 who reported on the Arab spring uprisings, a campaign group said on Monday.

More than 100 others were were attacked, intimidated, arrested and wounded in countries including Egypt, Libya, Syria, Tunisia and Yemen, the Geneva-based Press Emblem Campaign said.

Mexico and Pakistan were the most dangerous countries to work in however.

The PEC said 12 journalists died in Mexico, likely victims of the ongoing conflict between the military and drug cartels in the north of the country. Full story...

Obama's Hawaii vacation costs US taxpayers more than $4 million!!!

(...)

This $4 million figure is nearly 100 times the average annual salary of an American worker, which currently stands at $41,673. The Hawaii Reporter calculates that travel costs alone for the president and his entourage via Air Force One (plus a separate trip for Michelle Obama who has traveled in advance), in addition to a United States Air Force C-17 cargo aircraft to transport "the presidential limos, helicopters and other support equipment", amounts to a whopping $3,629,622. Housing for security staff costs an estimated $151,200, and luxurious hotel rooms for the president’s 24-strong staff a further $72,216. Based on these figures the total cost to the federal US taxpayer (and the additional burden on the national debt) is a staggering $3,853,038. If you add in local taxpayer costs of $260,000 (including police overtime and city ambulances), the total public expense is $4,113,038.

(...)

Like the vast majority of Americans, Barack Obama should be prepared to make sacrifices, not least when he’s spending other people’s money. Is it too much to ask the president to vacation at Camp David in Maryland instead of flying nearly 5,000 miles to Hawaii? Once again he is displaying a let-them-eat-cake attitude, at a time of mass unemployment, stagnant housing markets, and growing poverty. Full story...

Catholic student 'bullied, humiliated' by teacher for being anti-homosexual...

A teacher's decision to promote homosexuality in class rather than teach the approved economics curriculum – and the school district's endorsement of that – soon will be hitting the court docket, as a complaint has been filed by a student subjected to the instructor's "bullying."

Officials with the Thomas More Law Center say they have filed a federal lawsuit against the Howell Public School District in Howell, Mich., and teacher Johnson "Jay" McDowell for punishing and humiliating a student after he responded to McDowell's question about homosexuality with his biblically based perspective.

"Rather than teach the required economics curriculum for which he is paid, McDowell, with the full knowledge of school officials, used his position of authority to promote his homosexual agenda at taxpayers' expense," said Richard Thompson, chief of the law center. Full story...

“I’m not happy paying taxes to a corrupt state” (A Swiss look at Greece)

To speak of a national depression is perhaps an exaggeration, but the debt crisis in Greece is affecting almost everyone, with the poor being hit particularly hard.

Greek woes drive up suicide rate to highest in Europe...

The suicide rate in Greece has reached a pan-European record high, with experts attributing the rise to the country's economic crisis.

Painful austerity measures and a seemingly endless economic drama is exacting a deadly toll on the nation. Statistics released by the Greek ministry of health show a 40% rise in those taking their own lives between January and May this year compared to the same period in 2010.

Before the financial crisis first began to bite three years ago, Greece had the lowest suicide rate in Europe at 2.8 per 100,000 inhabitants. It now has almost double that number, the highest on the continent, despite the stigma in a nation where the Orthodox church refuses funeral rights for those who take their lives. Attempted suicides have also increased.

"It's never just one thing, but almost always debts, joblessness, the fear of being fired are cited when people phone in to say they are contemplating ending their lives," said Eleni Beikari, a psychiatrist at the non-governmental organisation, Klimaka, which runs a 24-hour suicide hotline. Send in the drones: the predator state goes domestic...

“Eventually, we’ll have to put an end to this, one way or another.”

Sheriff Kelly Janke of North Dakota’s Nelson County uttered that ominous sentence in mid-September, during what the local media giddily described as a stand-off with local farmer Rodney Brossart and his family. By that time, Sheriff Janke, with the help of the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Air Force, had already run the table where “non-lethal” means of compelling the family to surrender were concerned. This included everything from the Taser used during Brossart’s June 23 arrest to the precedent-setting use of a Predator-B drone to conduct surveillance of the home several days later to facilitate the arrest of the farmer’s three sons.

The most recent conflict between Janke’s department and Brossart began when a half-dozen stray cattle wandered onto the family’s farm, which is located near the tiny village of Lakota (roughly 100 miles northwest of Fargo). Brossart, who reportedly believed that the cattle were unclaimed and thus belonged to him under a disputed interpretation of open-range law, refused to turn them over to the Sheriff. Full story...

Singapore subway woes add pressure on PM Lee...

Singapore's multiple train breakdowns have become a political hot potato for Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who must now take steps to assure an angry public that there is accountability in government and that authorities can cope with emergencies.

The Southeast Asian city-state, known for its efficient government, spectacular skyline and dozens of luxurious shopping centres, suffered three major subway disruptions last week, each lasting several hours.

On Thursday, hundreds of commuters were trapped underground without light and ventilation for over an hour before they heard from train operator SMRT (SMRT.SI).

The breakdown on the north-south line, which connects the north of the island to the city centre and serves the main Orchard Road shopping belt, caused huge traffic jams, with crowds spilling into the streets to try to find a way home. Full story...

European Stability Mechanism (ESM) or The shocking truth of fascist Europe...

The BBC's myth-makers serve up a double helping of propaganda...

There was much excitement over the revelation that David Attenborough’s Frozen Planet had “faked” a scene where polar bear cubs, actually born in a Dutch zoo, seemed to be in Arctic wilderness. Yet no interest at all was aroused by a much more serious misrepresentation – of the speed at which ice is melting at the poles.

I was criticised for pointing this out last week, but as anyone can see, from satellite-based charts on the Cryosphere Today website, the extent of polar sea ice was last year 1.6 million square kilometres greater than its average over the last 30 years – something which could never have been guessed from Attenborough’s dramatic film sequences, carefully chosen to convey the very different message the BBC wanted us to believe.

- - - - -

The BBC is incorrigible. Last Wednesday, for the second time in 14 months, Panorama broadcast an unashamed “commercial” for the social workers of Coventry, showing the wonderful work they do in face of Britain’s “adoption crisis”. Like all good propagandists, the BBC gave us a highly selective picture of several children removed from their parents to be adopted. Full story...

Giant rabbits and virgin blood: the krazy world of Kim Jong-il...

WHEN you've been surrounded by yes-men all your life, you're bound to suffer from a few quirks and delusions. Kim Jong-il, who died at the weekend, had his fair share, ranging from his status as a fashion icon to his habit of injecting himself with the blood of virgins.

Kim Jong-il is the biggest foodie in Asia or an incredibly fussy eater, depending on your point of view. Luxurious foods and drinks were brought to him from around the world by special couriers, according to the LA Times, which also described how Kim's rice must be cooked "over a wood fire using trees cut from Mount Baekdu. He has his own private source of spring water.

Kim Jong-il death sparks hysterical outpouring of grief in North Korea...

North Korea announced the death of Kim Jong Il at the age of 69 and urged its people to rally behind his young son and heir Kim Jong-un.

The news was met with public outpourings of grief across the communist state.

State television, which delivered the shock news in a tearful announcement, aired footage from Pyongyang of hysterical North Koreans, young and old, pounding the ground in a display of abject grief.

People on the streets of the North Korean capital wailed, some kneeling on the ground or bowing repeatedly as they learned the news that their 'Dear Leader' had died of heart failure while carrying out official duties on a train trip. More + video...

Singapore's rising centenarians...

MORE than 700 people in Singapore are 100 years old or above, according to last year’s census. This was up from 500 in 2007, and the number is expected to rise.

One in five Singaporeans will be aged above 65 by 2030, according to a government report published in 2006. The average life expectancy at birth last year was 81.7 years, up from 75.3 years in 1990.

The census found that two-thirds (466) of the 724 centenarians here were women. The Chinese made up 649 of the total.

Singapore’s centenarian figures are on par with those in other countries like Switzerland and Australia, where centenarians make up about 0.01 % of their populations. Full story...

After it was revealed yesterday that an increasing number of women are using the sex industry to pay their way through university, one woman has told her story of stripping while studying.

Emma Green, of Glamorgan, Wales, turned to stripping on a webcam for men and earned £200-a-week to fund her studies.

The 25-year-old, who studied multi-media design at Glamorgan University before spending another year at a beauty therapy college in 2009, says a normal part-time job was out of the question because of her intense course workload.

Sri Lankan army commanders 'assassinated surrendering Tamils'

Sri Lankan army commanders were ordered by the country's leaders to assassinate surrendering Tamils in the final phase of the long and brutal civil war, according to a senior former military officer.

The claims are contained in a sworn deposition, seen by The Daily Telegraph, made by a career officer who rose to the rank of major general before he fled the country in fear of his life to seek asylum in the United States.

He is the highest ranking person to assert that atrocities against Tamil rebels and civilians were sanctioned at the highest echelons of the government. The source had the highest security clearance and close contact with some of the army's most powerful figures.

His testimony contradicted a government-appointed commission, which concluded that Sri Lanka's military did not intentionally target civilians. Full story...

Charity received just £5,500 in 2009 from £1.9m trade in old shoes...

In a Tesco car park in Edmonton, Bozena Przybyla bags up a pair of cork wedge heels to drop into the Variety Club recycling bin. She is not alone in Britain in trying to help the charity for sick, disabled and disadvantaged children by offloading some old shoes.

In the last few years, well over 2,000 tonnes of footwear have been collected annually from similar shoe banks, each branded with the jaunty top hat and heart logo of the entertainment industry charity. The Variety Club is famous for providing Sunshine coaches and its association with TV and film stars such as Michael Caine, Michael Parkinson and Jimmy Tarbuck, but there is little glamour sorting odd flip-flops, pairing up old trainers and untangling high heels. There is, though, good money to be earned, but the question is by whom?

Information about volumes of footwear collected, how much they are sold for and how much goes to the charity's good causes is not easy to discover. None of it is routinely made public by the Variety Club or their commercial partners, the European Recycling Company, which makes it difficult to find out for anyone interested in maximising the charitable impact of their recycling. But information obtained by the Guardian shows that between 2008 and 2010, ERC turned over on average £1.9m a year on the sale of more than 2,000 tonnes of shoes collected annually. Despite the smiling faces of children adorning the bins, the benefit to the charity in 2009 of this nationwide operation was £5,500, ERC confirmed, rising to £30,000 in 2011. Full story...

Ex-teacher, prof accused of making porn with students...

An Oklahoma prosecutor said Friday he "fully expects" more young victims to emerge in the case of a former third-grade teacher accused of making child pornography involving her students and sharing it online with a retired college professor in Pennsylvania.

Former McLoud school teacher Kimberly Ann Crain, 48, and retired Pennsylvania professor of early childhood development Gary Doby, 65, were charged Thursday in the case in which prosecutors allege Crain took photographs of as many as 14 young girls while they were changing in her classroom and at her home and shared them with Doby. Crain also is accused of setting up video chats on her school computer between her students and a man named "Uncle G," who authorities say was Doby.

"Any person who has a child that's been a student of Mrs. Crain has been on pins and needles wondering if their child is a victim," said Pottawatomie County District Attorney Richard Smothermon. "We've had at least three or four more parents contact us. Potentially there are many more victims. Full story...

Blood diamonds will pay for Robert Mugabe's election terror campaign...

Conflict diamonds are to be used to fund a new campaign of violence by President Robert Mugabe's regime against his political opponents in Zimbabwe as elections loom.

Environmental experts are blaming the "utter failure" of the Kimberley Process, set up in 2003 to monitor conflict diamonds and stop them reaching mainstream outlets, for allowing Mugabe and his allies to siphon off millions of dollars in profits from Zimbabwean diamonds, which have now gone on sale.

There has been consistent criticism of the Kimberley Process since the decision to lift a ban on the sale of the gems from the newly discovered Marange fields in Zimbabwe, despite evidence of human rights abuses and killings by Mugabe's soldiers. Human Rights Watch claimed the decision "betrayed the trust" of miners, consumers and retailers.

This weekend, Anjin Investments, a Chinese-led venture in Zimbabwe in partnership with Mugabe's government, announced it was now the world's biggest diamond producer, with a stockpile of three million carats to sell. The company, which thanked the Kimberley Process for its backing, is funding a new military college in the country. Full story...

"Extremist" Bhagavad Gita faces legal ban in Russia...

Bhagvad Gita, one of the most sacred Hindu religious texts, is facing a legal ban and the prospect of being branded as "an extremist" literature across Russia, with a court in Siberia's Tomsk city all set to deliver its final verdict on Monday in a case filed by state prosecutors.

The final pronouncement in the case will come just two days after Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was here for a bilateral summit meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev from Dec 15 to 17.

The case, which has been going on in Tomsk court since June this year, seeks to get a Russian translation of 'Bhagvad Gita As It Is' written by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), on the Hindu religious text banned in Russia and declaring it as a literature spreading "social discord", apart from rendering its distribution on Russian soil illegal. Amnesty condemns Saudi amputations...

Six men facing amputation of their right hands and left feet for 'highway robbery' in Saudi Arabia must have their sentences commuted by the king, Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, Amnesty International has said.

The sentence of 'cross amputation' is currently before the country’s Supreme Court for approval and could take place in the coming days if also ratified by King Abdullah.

The six men, all from Bedouin tribes, are: Barzan bin Raheel al-Shammari, aged 29, Amer bin Eid al-Jarba’, aged 26, Muhammad bin Ali al-Shammari, aged 25, Muhammad bin Dhiyab Maddhi, aged 27, Abdullah bin Dhiyab Maddhi, aged 30, and Bandar bin Abbas al-As’adi, aged 22.

They were arrested in October 2010 in Riyadh, accused of “highway robbery” and taken to Malaz prison. All were allegedly beaten and forced to confess to the charges against them. Twenty-six-year-old Amer bin Eid al-Jarba’ was reportedly beaten for eight days and told that if he did not confess his three brothers would be arrested. It appears he signed a confession without knowing its contents and was later held in solitary confinement for 33 days. Full story...

Big Brother cell phones and the Carrier IQ conspiracy...

Just weeks ago Trevor Eckhart, a security researcher and Android operating system developer, discovered a mysterious process running in the background of his Android-based device.

This program turned out to be Carrier IQ, or CIQ, and specifically the IQ Agent which is installed on mobile devices from all major carriers before they reach the consumer, totaling some 150 million phones, mostly in the United States.

The software is billed as a diagnostic tool which allows cellphone carriers to “better understand how mobile devices interact with and perform on their network,” according to an official Carrier IQ document that attempts to dispel what they bill as rumors and unfounded concerns of consumers and researchers.

The document is somewhat opaque and esoteric for those of us not familiar with the terminology and technology at work in these highly complex systems but some of it is quite easy to understand. Full story...

Bullets sent to Silvio Berlusconi...

Italian authorities intercepted letters containing bullets and threatening messages destined for Mario Monti, the prime minister, his predecessor Silvio Berlusconi and other senior political figures.

The letters, which threatened violence unless the government renounces a 33 billion euro austerity package which passed a vote of confidence in parliament yesterday (fri), were signed by an extreme Leftist group, the Armed Proletarian Movement.

"Reconsider the austerity plan or we'll make you pay,” the letters warned. "We will hit you and it will be a war to the death. We'll make you curse these measures in your blood. You will no longer sleep soundly. We have plenty of bullets and we’re getting TNT from our Arab friends.

“The financing is ready – just as your funerals are ready. We’re not against the forces of order, but if someone wants to act the hero, they should first think about their family. Full story...

Syrian forces take families hostage to force protesters into submission...

Syrian security forces are threatening family members of anti-Assad protesters and seizing them as hostages, activists from the restive southern province of Deraa say.

Virtually cut off from outsiders, the area which sustained the first government tank assault of the uprising nine months ago this week is now facing a military sweep intended to quell dissent.

Separate families told independently how brothers and children of those wanted by the authorities have been targeted to force their relatives to give themselves up.

"They sent for me, saying they would kill my brother if I didn't hand myself in," one man, who called himself Abu Mahmoud, said in the Jordanian town of Ramtha after fleeing over the border last week.

His name had appeared on the "wanted" list issued daily to troops. Full story...

'If you don't take a job as a prostitute, we can stop your benefits'

A 25-year-old waitress who turned down a job providing "sexual services'' at a brothel in Berlin faces possible cuts to her unemployment benefit under laws introduced this year.

Prostitution was legalised in Germany just over two years ago and brothel owners – who must pay tax and employee health insurance – were granted access to official databases of jobseekers.

The waitress, an unemployed information technology professional, had said that she was willing to work in a bar at night and had worked in a cafe.

She received a letter from the job centre telling her that an employer was interested in her "profile'' and that she should ring them. Only on doing so did the woman, who has not been identified for legal reasons, realise that she was calling a brothel. Full story...

Bangladesh man cuts off wife's fingers ... because she went to college.

Police in Bangladesh said they would charge a migrant worker accused of cutting off most of his wife's hand after she started studying for a college degree without his permission.

Rafiqul Islam tied up his 21-year-old wife, taped up her mouth and then cut off the five fingers of her right hand just hours after he had returned from the United Arab Emirates, police chief Mohammad Salauddin said.

"He was enraged because he did not like her studying at college. He was jealous because while he only had a grade 8 standard education, she was off to college to pursue higher studies," Mr Salahuddin told AFP.

Islam, 30, admitted to the crime after he was arrested in Dhaka, Salauddin said, adding that police had finished an investigation and would charge Islam with permanent disfiguration, which is punishable by life imprisonment. Full story...

Dutch report finds thousands of children were sexually abused in Catholic institutions...

Roman Catholic orders, congregations and dioceses knew about the abuse of minors in Catholic institutions, but failed to help the victims or take action against the abusers.

This is the conclusion of the Deetman Inquiry which on Friday published its final report on abuse in the Roman Catholic Church in the Netherlands.

The report points to the inadequate organisation, and the closed culture of the Dutch church province as the main reason for its inadequate response to the widespread abuse. The church also sought to avoid a scandal.

Inquiry Chair Wim Deetman, a former education minister, estimates that between 10,000 and 20,000 minors were abused in Catholic boarding schools, children’s homes and orphanages. In several thousand cases the abuse could be characterised as very serious. Full story...

Public anger mounts in Singapore over train disruptions...

In the aftermath of the breakdown of train services on the North-South line on peak hour Thursday night, commuters are still fuming over SMRT's handling of the situation.

Many passengers were left trapped in train carriages, prompting some to smash one of the cabin windows with a fire extinguisher to allow proper ventilation.

Members of the public lamented the lack of clear explanations given for the breakdown – which SMRT later attributed to a “power rail problem”.

In a comment, Yahoo! user Sengguan said, "Total failure of MRT system. I thought they have conducted drill(s) for such incident?"

Some users criticised how staff managed the passengers. Full story...
