£1.8million intended for world’s poor was diverted to fund Pope’s UK visit...


Nearly £2m intended to be spent helping development in the world's poorest nations was diverted to fund the Pope's UK visit.

The Department for International Development gave £1.85m to the Foreign Office to help to pay for the costs of Pope Benedict's visit last September.

DFID insisted that the money for the visit did not come from ring-fenced funds used for |overseas aid. More...
