Children, some aged five, commit thousands of child sex offences...

More than 5,000 child sex offences, including rape and other serious sex attacks, were recorded by police in the last three years where the abuser was under 18, figures released under the Freedom of Information Act showed.

At least three forces – Avon and Somerset, Humberside and Cambridgeshire – all showed abusers as young as five.

The NSPCC, which has worked with five-year-old children showing “precocious sexual behaviour”, said it was often the case they were mimicking things they simply should not have seen at such a young age.

The children may have seen pornography on an older brother’s computer, shared a bedroom with teenagers and witnessed inappropriate behaviour, or could have been allowed in a room while parents were watching sex scenes on the television. Full story...

Female Iranian communists organize topless protest against hijabs in Stockholm...

The Iranian female activists have followed the footsteps of the scandalous Ukrainian FEMEN movement, flashing their breasts in protest against the hijab headscarf, women wear in the Islamic world.

The action performed by members of the Iranian Communist Party and the Organization Against Violence on Women in Iran took place in the center of the Swedish capital, Stockholm on Sunday, and was dedicated to International Women’s Day, which is celebrated on March 8.

The women painted their bodies with slogans such as “My nudity is my protest” and “No to hijab” and displayed pictures from anti-Islamic demonstrations by FEMEN.

The topless photos from Stockholm first appeared on FEMEN’s official website, with members of the “sextremist” movement expressing their confidence that “in the historical battle ‘woman v. Islam’ women will win!” Full story...

Swiss voters crack down on corporate pay packages...

A proposal to rein in pay-outs to top managers and company board members has won an overwhelming majority in a nationwide ballot on Sunday. Tough negotiations are expected in parliament over the application of the initiative.

Final results show 67.9 per cent of Swiss voters coming out in favour of granting shareholders a veto right over salaries and bonuses for the top flight of listed companies.

Supporters had the upper hand in all language regions and both in urban and rural areas.

Claude Longchamp, political scientist of the leading GfS Bern research and polling institute, said the broad support was also a result of the public outrage over bonuses to bankers and other top business leaders.

“The high emotions about the pay-outs fueled the anger and added even stronger support for the initiative,” he told public radio. Full story...

I love life, says Manipur's Irom Sharmila on her 12-year fast...

(...)

Amid protest outside the court premises, Ms Chanu appeared before the judge and said, "I do not want to commit suicide.

Mine is only a non-violent protest. It is my demand to live as a human being."

She also told the court, "I love life. I do not want to take my life but I want justice and peace".

The magistrate, however, told her that she has been accused of attempting to commit suicide and prima facie the charge is there against her.

On being asked by the court "Do you plead guilty?" Ms Chanu said no and claimed trial. Full story...

Liberian women battle against 'sex for grades' at universities...

During her first few days at the University of Liberia, a male student asked Famata Adrekis if she was taking the "Sex 101" class. "I said: 'What do you mean?' I was shocked," says the fourth-year sociology student.

"Sex 101" was a reference to the expectation that female students will have sex with their male lecturers to get good grades or pass their degree courses. The practice is often referred to as "transactional sex" – sex for grades – and it's common not only in Liberian universities but also throughout sub-Saharan Africa.

A 2011 survey conducted by ActionAid in three Liberian universities found that about 85% of female students had been sexually harassed or involved in transactional sex while they studied. Some women said they were forced to keep repeating classes if they refused to have sex with their male lecturers. If a woman reported her lecturer and he was sacked, the teacher would often simply move to another institution, the survey revealed.

Adrekis is now involved in setting up a women's forum at her university. The forum will provide a safe space to report incidents, find support and lobby the university's student affairs office to take action against perpetrators. The forum will also seek to educate men about a woman's right not to be harassed. The forum met for the first time in February, following weeks of leaflet drops and awareness-raising among students. 225,000 American patients die in doctors’ hands: silence of the lambs...

In my previous article, I examined the silence of the lambs (media) concerning the collusion between Monsanto and the FDA.

In the case of medical care in America, that purposeful silence reigns supreme as well.

By the most conservative estimate, researched and published by mainstream medical sources, the US medical system kills 225,000 people each year.

That’s 2.25 MILLION deaths per decade.

You’d think such a mind-boggling fact would rate a relentless series of page-one stories in the press, along with top-story status on the network evening news.

But no. It’s wall-to-wall silence. Full story...

This cap on bankers’ bonuses is like a dead cat – pure distraction...

To understand what has happened in Europe in the last week, we must borrow from the rich and fruity vocabulary of Australian political analysis. Let us suppose you are losing an argument. The facts are overwhelmingly against you, and the more people focus on the reality the worse it is for you and your case. Your best bet in these circumstances is to perform a manoeuvre that a great campaigner describes as “throwing a dead cat on the table, mate”.

That is because there is one thing that is absolutely certain about throwing a dead cat on the dining room table – and I don’t mean that people will be outraged, alarmed, disgusted. That is true, but irrelevant. The key point, says my Australian friend, is that everyone will shout “Jeez, mate, there’s a dead cat on the table!”; in other words they will be talking about the dead cat, the thing you want them to talk about, and they will not be talking about the issue that has been causing you so much grief.

That is exactly what Brussels has done with this recent gambit to cap bankers’ bonuses. Look around Europe and you can see the continuing catastrophe of the single currency, an ideological project that most Europarliamentarians and most of the EU establishment continues to support with vengeful fervour. The rebel Chinese newspaper which dares to challenge the Communist party line...

In this northern Chinese village, there is a tale of two newspapers, an old fashioned media battle.

In the red corner is the Gaoying News, the official organ of the local government, filled with Communist party propaganda.

On the other side is something incredibly rare, considering China's vice-like control over the media: a rebel newspaper.

Operating out of two rooms in a dilapidated pharmaceutical factory, and with a staff of four, the Voice of the People is a muckraking four-page freesheet that challenges everything the Gaoying News writes.

"We wanted to rebuke the lies of the official newspaper," said He Jianguo, 44, a former pharmaceuticals salesman who has become one of the editors of the Voice of the People. "Because we have a saying here in China: if you repeat a lie 100 times, it becomes the truth." Full story...

In Haiti the UN's behaviour is a far cry from being the conscience of the world...

Imagine if a multinational company went to one of the world's most impoverished countries and, while saying it was there to help, contaminated the water supplies, unleashing a new disease that killed thousands of people. Hundreds of thousands more develop a hideous sickness, suffering such debilitating loss of liquid their eyes sink into their face, their skin wrinkles, their body shivers uncontrollably. Then there is a cover-up as the firm evades responsibility and, when finally taken to court, it simply refuses to play ball with the legal process.

Such a story sounds like something created in the febrile mind of a Hollywood scriptwriter, which in real life would lead to a huge and justified outcry. But this is precisely what has just happened to the people of Haiti, except with one big difference – it was the United Nations at the centre of events, not a multinational. And there was no furore, just a few murmurings of mild concern.

Yet such behaviour is worse coming from the body that is supposed to serve as the conscience of the world rather than a profit-hungry firm. The UN purports to exist in order to guard human rights, to spread the rule of law, help the poor and defend them from conflict and disease. It has all too often fallen woefully short of these noble ideals, but rarely has it shown such willful contempt for them in its own actions. Full story...

Indian women use smartphones to 'pin the creeps'

With virtual bodyguards, panic buttons and maps to pinpoint harassment blackspots, women in urban India are using their smartphones for protection after a notorious gangrape in New Delhi.
Interest in safety apps and websites has surged since the fatal December attack, in which a  23-year-old
student was set upon by a drunken gang on her way home from a cinema in the Indian capital.

After outrage and protests erupted, four businesswomen set up Safecity.in, a website for victims of harassment to channel their anger.

The site encourages them to "Pin the Creeps" by reporting incidents of harassment and abuse - ranging from catcalling to rape - which are added to an online map and sent to those requesting alerts.

Mumbai-based Elsa D'Silva, a founder of the site, said social media had allowed women to speak out and warn others of dangerous areas, even if they are reluctant to give their name or make a complaint to the police. Full story...

Swiss referendum 'backs executive pay curbs'

Swiss voters appear to have backed proposals to impose some of the world's strictest controls on executive pay, projected referendum results suggest.

Some 70% are thought to have supported plans to give shareholders a veto on compensation and ban big payouts for new and departing managers.

Business groups argued the proposals would damage Swiss competitiveness.

But analysts say ordinary Swiss are concerned about a growing economic divide in the country.

The vote comes just days after the EU approved measures to cap bankers bonuses. Full story...

South Africa video exposes rot in police system...

On Tuesday Mido Macia, a 27-year-old citizen of Mozambique, was handcuffed by uniformed policemen to the inside of a police van in Daveyton, a suburb of Johannesburg. The taxi driver was then dragged across the pavement.

Macia later died from head injuries and internal bleeding while in detention.

“They [police officers] killed him. They beat him up so badly in here,” a source who was also detained in the cell told local media.

(...)

Macia’s is not an isolated case. The country’s Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) looks into abuse committed by police officers, including rape, murder, assault and torture. In its 2012 annual report, the IPID listed 932 deaths that occurred in police custody or as a result of police action.

Zweli Mnisi, spokesperson for the Ministry of Police admitted that this figure is "high - and it's a worrying concern for us". But, he added, the figures have decreased by 10 percent. "Are we happy with this? No, we want it to be 100 percent," he told Al Jazeera.

Amnesty International’s southern Africa director, Noel Kututwa, said in a statement that “this appalling incident involving excessive force is the latest in an increasingly disturbing pattern of brutal police conduct in South Africa". Full story...

Neo-fascism sweeping over Sri Lanka...

In shades reminiscent of Nazi fascism of yesteryear, Buddhist militancy in Sri Lanka has lately begun to rear its ugly head of intolerance towards the island's minorities. A massive rally was held in the capital city of Colombo last week by the belligerent Sinhalese Buddhist group, the Bodu Bala Sena, and the message was very explicit.

"This is a Government created by Sinhala Buddhists and it must remain Sinhala Buddhist.

This is a Sinhala country, Sinhala Government. Democratic and pluralistic values are killing the Sinhala race."

In speeches charges with provocative rhetoric, the group's party leaders demanded that

President Mahinda Rajapaksa ensures the protection of the "sacred Sinhala franchise' that swept him into power. Extremist monks denounced Muslim practices, such as their use of conservative clothing referring to it as "gorilla' outfits, and have called for a total ban on halal products for the community. Clad in white or t-shirts bearing a "No-Halal' slogan, the supporters carried Buddhist flags and cheered enthusiastically when extremist Bodu Bala Sena monks denounced particular Muslim practices. Americans renouncing citizenship to become British thanks to tax rise...

London-based American lawyers, who specialise in tax and immigration, report a threefold increase over the last five years in the number of American citizens who are giving up their citizenship - a process known as “renunciation”.

Across the world 1,781 Americans renounced their citizenship in 2011 compared with just 231 in 2008, when US tax laws changed, although it remains unknown how many are adopting British rather than any other nationality.

Many decide to give up their American citizenship after tiring of the lengthy US tax return process, which requires them to pay tax on their total income regardless of where they live.

“There’s no question that the number of people renouncing their US citizenship is increasing,” said Diane Gelon, a US tax and immigration lawyer based in London. Full story...

Zimbabwe is starving, but Mugabe holds lavish 89th birthday party...

Thousands of people have attended a lavish party to celebrate Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's 89th birthday in the mining town of Bindura.

Mr Mugabe was presented with a cake said to weigh 89kg (196lb), and gold coins were minted to mark the occasion.

The celebrations cost about $600,000 (£400,000), reports say.

In his speech, Mr Mugabe - who has ruled since 1980 - denied claims that he was trying to intimidate political rivals ahead of a new election.

Mr Mugabe will be contesting the election later this year, hoping to secure another five-year term in office. Full story...

"Vous" or "tu?" French cops ordered to be polite to suspects...

French police have received official orders that they are no longer allowed to address suspects using the informal and familiar ‘tu’ (‘you’ singular), but should at all times use the more formal, respectful ‘vous’ (‘you’ plural).

The law enforcement officers have been explicitly banned from speaking to any members of the public using ‘tu,’ which is normally used to address friends, family or younger children, according to a new 33-article code of conduct that comes into effect next month.

Using ‘tu’ to a stranger can be considered derogatory or impolite. However, French police are prone to employing the term when speaking to suspects.

“For many police officers, using the familiar ‘tu’ is in their DNA... it carries an implied threat,” an anonymous youth told local news radio channel France Info. “It’s the kind of thing that can quite naturally ignite a violent reaction and it’s always the youths who come off badly.”

“Quite rightly a lot of young people refuse to be spoken to this way,”
he added. Full story...

Egypt introduces Saudi-style Islamic moral police force...

Egypt has quietly introduced a Saudi-style Islamic religious police force in order to implement the moral principles of Islam using "non-violent methods".

The Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, an informal group, made the announcement at a press conference in Cairo.

"We have absolutely no relationship with the 'morality' committees in Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Somalia or Nigeria. We will only offer advice to those who want to listen. We shall have no business with people who refuse to listen to us," said the committee's founder, Hisham el-Ashri.

The committee says it will not interfere with the work of the state's security forces and has issued assurances that it will not target nightclubs. Full story...

'Life, its behind us, for me it was beautiful'

(...)

Well, Hessel is probably best known outside France for his 2010 political pamphlet 'Indignez Vous!' or 'Time for Outrage' as it was called in English. It was a rallying call for people across the world to stand up and fight, just like he and his compatriots had done in the French Resistance. Hessel did not mean literally of course, but he wanted to see people resist the growing divide between the haves and the have-nots and stand up against the destruction of the environment. The book, which sold three million copies worldwide is credited with starting the Occupy Wall Street campaign that soon spread into a global movement. “When something outrages you, as Nazism did me, that is when you become a militant, strong and engaged,” Hessel wrote in Indignez Vous!.

US student loan debt nears $1 trillion...

The New York Federal Reserve says the total student loan debt in the United States has almost tripled over the past eight years, approaching one trillion dollars.

The figure has increased to $966 billion as of the fourth quarter of 2012, almost tripling from 2004 to 2012, the organization stated in a report issued on Thursday.

The number of borrowers and the average balance per person also increased by 70 percent, with the number of borrowers late on their loan payments growing from under ten percent in 2004 to 17 percent in 2012.

People with a high burden of student loans are also prevented from purchasing other types of credit, particularly home mortgages, the report said. Full story...

Microsoft seeks patent for spy tech for Skype...

A technology called Legal Intercept that Microsoft hopes to patent would allow the company to secretly intercept, monitor and record Skype calls. And it's stoking privacy concerns.

Microsoft's patent application for Legal Intercept was filed in 2009, well before the company's $8.5 billion purchase of Skype in May. The patent application, which is still in process, was made public last week.

From Microsoft's description of the technology in its patent application, Legal Intercept appears similar to tools used by telecommunication companies and equipment makers to comply with government wiretap and surveillance requests.

According to Microsoft, Legal Intercept is designed to silently record communications on VoIP networks such as Skype. Full story...

Violent protests in Delhi over minor's 'rape'

There have been violent protests in the Indian capital, New Delhi, after reports that a seven-year-old girl was raped at a state-run school.

Incensed by news of the incident, demonstrators attacked police barricades and threw stones at buses in the area on Friday.

It followed confirmation by a New Delhi police spokesman who said they were investigating the alleged rape of the girl and were questioning teachers and security guards at the school.

Checking for horsemeat, Iceland tests find meat pies contain no meat at all!!

Here's one they weren't expecting — meat pies with no meat.

When officials in Iceland began hearing about horsemeat being secreted into beef products around Europe, they decided to run tests to ensure the same thing wasn't happening in Iceland.

Icelandic meat inspector Kjartan Hreinsson says his team didn't find any horsemeat, but one brand of locally produced beef pie left it stumped: it contained no meat at all.

"That was the peculiar thing," Hreinsson said in a telephone interview Friday. "It was labelled as beef pie, so it should be beef pie."

Hreinsson said it appeared to be some kind of vegetable matter. He said the mystery pie was traced to a firm in western Iceland and the case had been handed to municipal authorities. Source...

UK's "naked rambler" arrested for nudity ... again!

A British man who has spent most of the past decade naked - and in jail - was back behind bars Friday after defying an order to cover up.

Stephen Gough, known as the "Naked Rambler," was arrested Thursday as he left a court in Southampton, southern England, wearing only boots, socks and a knapsack.

A judge had just imposed an order that he must "wear sufficient clothing in public to at least cover his genitalia and buttocks."

The 54-year-old former Royal Marine appeared at the same court Friday, and was ordered detained until a hearing on March 25.

Since 2003 Gough has completed two naked walks the length of Britain, with frequent interruptions for arrests, court appearances and jail time. Full story...

Mother Teresa: anything but a saint...

The myth of altruism and generosity surrounding Mother Teresa is dispelled in a paper by Serge Larivée and Genevieve Chenard of University of Montreal's Department of Psychoeducation and Carole Sénéchal of the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Education. The paper will be published in the March issue of the journal Studies in Religion/Sciences religieuses and is an analysis of the published writings about Mother Teresa. Like the journalist and author Christopher Hitchens, who is amply quoted in their analysis, the researchers conclude that her hallowed image—which does not stand up to analysis of the facts—was constructed, and that her beatification was orchestrated by an effective media relations campaign.

"While looking for documentation on the phenomenon of altruism for a seminar on ethics, one of us stumbled upon the life and work of one of Catholic Church's most celebrated woman and now part of our collective imagination—Mother Teresa—whose real name was Agnes Gonxha," says Professor Larivée, who led the research. "The description was so ecstatic that it piqued our curiosity and pushed us to research further."

As a result, the three researchers collected 502 documents on the life and work of Mother Teresa. After eliminating 195 duplicates, they consulted 287 documents to conduct their analysis, representing 96% of the literature on the founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity (OMC). Facts debunk the myth of Mother Teresa

In their article, Serge Larivée and his colleagues also cite a number of problems not take into account by the Vatican in Mother Teresa's beatification process, such as "her rather dubious way of caring for the sick, her questionable political contacts, her suspicious management of the enormous sums of money she received, and her overly dogmatic views regarding, in particular, abortion, contraception, and divorce." Singapore professor denied tenure, sparks academic freedom debate...

A Singaporean university has denied tenure for a second time to an outspoken journalism professor known for his critical political commentary, prompting some scholars and students to accuse the school of curtailing academic freedom.

They say that the Nanyang Technological University has no grounds for refusing to grant a permanent position to Cherian George, an academic who they say has produced acclaimed work on Singaporean media and politics. Mr. George, an associate professor of journalism, had his first tenure application rejected in 2009.

The accusations have revived debate over academic freedom in Singapore, a tightly regulated city-state that imposes restrictions on public assembly and limitations on free speech.

NTU’s decision was first reported Sunday by Cardiff University journalism professor Karin Wahl-Jorgensen, who had reviewed Mr. George’s application as an external expert. Calling the decision “an outrage” on her Twitter page, Ms. Wahl-Jorgensen described Mr. George as “one of the foremost public intellectuals in Singapore [who was] denied tenure because he sometimes expresses political opinions.” Full story...

Indonesian mother kills son because he had a small penis...

An Indonesian woman drowned her nine-year-old son in the bath, claiming she was worried that his "small penis" would affect his prospects for the future, a police spokesman said Thursday.

The 38-year-old woman from the capital Jakarta told police her son had had a small penis prior to being circumcised, but that it appeared to shrink further after the operation, police spokesman Rikwanto, who goes by one name, told AFP.

"She told police investigators that she killed him as he would have a bleak future with his small penis," Rikwanto said.

"She drowned her son in a bathtub filled with water. She then dressed him and laid him on a bed. After that, she went to a nearby police office to report her crime."

Rikwanto said the woman was fully conscious of what she had done, but police ordered a psychological test to assess her mental condition. Source...

'I am one of the Fukushima fifty'

They displayed a bravery few can comprehend, yet very little is known about the men who stayed behind to save Japan’s stricken nuclear plant.

It was, recalls Atsufumi Yoshizawa, a suicide mission: volunteering to return to a dangerously radioactive nuclear power plant on the verge of tipping out of control.

As he said goodbye to his colleagues they saluted him, like soldiers in battle. The wartime analogies were hard to avoid: in the international media he was a kamikaze, a samurai or simply one of the heroic Fukushima 50. The descriptions still embarrass him. “I’m not a hero,” he says. “I was just trying to do my job.”

A stoic, soft-spoken man dressed in the blue utility suit of his embattled employer Tokyo Electric Power Co., (Tepco) Mr Yoshizawa still finds it hard to dredge up memories of fighting to stop catastrophe at the Fukushima Daiichi plant. Two years later, debate still rages about responsibility for the planet’s worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl, and its impact. Fish caught near the plant this month contained over 5,000 times safe radiation limits, according to state broadcaster NHK. Full story...

The EU is a ball and chain – we should unshackle ourselves...

In deciding whether we want to be part of the EU we should ask ourselves whether or not it is advantageous to the UK to be part of that trading bloc. A trading bloc is advantageous if it enables us to access a larger free market for our goods and services. Economic theory from Adam Smith to David Ricardo shows that our prosperity is enhanced when we are able to focus on those goods and services that we are best at, and trade them with others who have different skills.

How is that going with our EU partners? Not very well judging by last year's Office for National Statistics figures. We have a negative balance of trade of £55.7bn with our EU partners: they sold us far more than we sold them. And it is clear from their actions in terms of regulation that they would like to snaffle and/or stifle our biggest industry – financial services – as the proposed curbs on bankers' bonuses demonstrates. For all its faults, this is our biggest sector for employment, exports and tax revenues, and the suggested curbs will place us at a disadvantage when competing with US and Asian banks and financial institutions.

(...)

Binding ourselves to the EU is like trying to run a race with a ball and chain as we are forced to import the labour practices and business regulation of countries that are the losers in global competitiveness. Given the choice, you would surely ally yourself to countries that are doing better, such as Singapore, which is second in the table of labour market efficiency; or the US, which is sixth. Do not be fooled into thinking that this is impossible, or that we have to be in a trading bloc with Europe because of our geographical proximity to it. Britain had successful trading relationships that spanned the globe over a century ago, when distance was a real obstacle to doing business. In a world increasingly dominated by the internet, digital business, and near universal access to jet travel, distance is irrelevant. Full story...

The scientific proof of the existence of the soul...

Michael Hathaway, author of 10 books on psychic development, past lives, regression, hypnosis and spirituality, and a board certified Past Life Regression Therapist is one of the most respected hypnotists in the country. He published a book entitled, “It’s Time to Simplify Your Soul’s Code”, an easy how-to guide for discovering our unique special purpose and to enrich our life experience by delving into the aspects of higher self and soul contracts.

In this book, Mr. Hathaway emphasizes the source energy of the loving universe as a means to connect to our divine purpose as incarnated souls. He brilliantly describes the Soul’s Code as the unique divine purpose each of us brings to our existence and that which we seek to manifest our spiritual growth. The time we spend here on Project Earth in the restraints of space/time and ego are designed as a learning tool, and we are joined together with earthly and other worldly beings, representing our Project Team. To simplify our soul code, we need only trust and believe in a universal energy that tunes us into our own divine pattern. This energy is the embodiment of unconditional love of both our self and others.

The Soul is perhaps one of the most misunderstood and highly controversial topics for mankind to ponder. Soul expands across all aspects of human activity, from science to religion to spirituality to death and salvation, the complexity of the soul is a subject we examine with wonder and awe, yet without sure conviction. £570m loss at Lloyds but £1.5m bonus for the boss...

The boss of Lloyds is being offered a £1.5 million bonus despite the taxpayer-backed bank racking up losses of £570 million.

The bonus awarded to chief executive António Horta-Osório was criticised by consumer groups as Lloyds set aside another £1.5 billion to cover mis-selling of payment protection insurance,

That takes the total which Lloyds has lost on mis-selling PPI in the last two years to £6.8 billion — by far the largest sum among the major high street lenders.

Which? executive director Richard Lloyd said: “After a year of scandals the banks should be doing all they can to win back badly damaged consumer trust, and help people entitled to a legitimate refund to get their money back quickly and without any hassle.

“The banks should publish updates on the amount of compensation they’ve paid back, and claw back bonuses from executives who presided over the mis-selling. The public will be rightly outraged that bankers are getting huge bonuses despite their failings.” Full story...

Swiss poised to slash 'abusive' pay for execs...

A popular initiative against “abusive” compensation for the top brass of Swiss companies has caught the imagination of the country’s population — and international attention.

On Sunday, the results will be made public on a national vote on the proposal launched by Thomas Minder, a Schaffhausen businessman and independent member of the Swiss senate.

The initiative would require Swiss companies to give shareholders an annual binding vote on the total compensation of boards of directors and senior management.

Compensation paid in advance to executives would be banned, along with golden parachutes to departing bosses. Full story...

Bucking the teen curfew in Switzerland...

A growing trend among Swiss towns and villages to introduce curfews for the under-16s is causing anger and frustration among the country's teenagers.

Local authorities say the curfews are necessary to prevent noise, litter, and vandalism, much of it fuelled, they claim, by underage drinking.

The resort of Interlaken became the first town to bring in a curfew, back in 2006. Today community police officer Hans Peter Buhlmann says it is a big success.

"This was where the problem was," he says, pointing to a big park in the town centre. "In summer it's beautiful, you can see the Alps, and lots of people come here, they sit down, they drink beer."

So is this a problem? It is, it seems, for Interlaken, where many residents were offended by the sight, and sound, of teenagers drinking alcohol in the park on long summer nights. Full story...

Iran steps up arrests, torture, executions ...

Iran has stepped up executions of prisoners including juveniles as well as arrests of dissidents who are often tortured in jail, sometimes to death, the United Nations reported on Thursday.

In twin reports issued in Geneva, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the U.N. special investigator on human rights in Iran, Ahmed Shaheed, voiced concern at what they called an apparent rise in the frequency and gravity of abuses in Iran.

"The Secretary-General remains deeply troubled by reports of increasing numbers of executions, including of juvenile offenders and in public; continuing amputations and flogging; arbitrary arrest and detention; unfair trials, torture and ill-treatment; and severe restrictions targeting media professionals, human rights defenders, lawyers and opposition activities, as well as religious minorities," Ban reported.

The Islamic Republic, which is under economic sanctions for its disputed nuclear programme, has failed to investigate "widespread, systemic and systematic violations of human rights", Shaheed's report said. Full story...

The silent nightmare of domestic violence in Russia...

Anya has a lot on her mind. In a small, sparsely-furnished room, she is trying to get her two boys, aged four and seven, to take their afternoon nap.

It is not the easiest of tasks at the best of times, and is even more difficult in her temporary home - a room in a shelter for women victims of domestic violence.

I was really tired, but he wouldn't let me sleep. I told him to stop, and that's when he started beating me.”
Anya

Her story is typical. During her seven-year marriage, she was frequently beaten or verbally abused.

She lived in fear, not knowing where to seek help. When at last she decided to lodge a complaint with the police, several years ago, she was told little could be done about her husband as "it was his home".

"It's been a nightmare, but a silent one," she says.

"For a while, I couldn't leave my children alone, and couldn't go to the hospital to report my injuries. Then I was waiting for the children to grow up, so they could confirm to the police what had been happening. Then I started to make recordings, I taped what was going on.

"But it's no use. The police don't want to deal with it. Once, a policewoman came in and said: 'Why don't you just run away like I did?' So even policewomen have to deal with this…" Full story...
