A life's worth 3 Indian rupees...


Is the worth of a man's life less than a kg of onion? A man in Bihar was killed yesterday for not paying Rs 3 (S$0.08) he owed to his friend, a grim reminder that despite the "economic turnaround" scripted by Mr Nitish Kumar in the state, grinding poverty is still prevalent, and such paltry sums can be matters of life and death.

The shocking incident took place yesterday at Nawkothi village in Begurasari district, not very far from Bihar's capital city of Patna. Police said Pankaj Thakur had a heated argument with Babloo Yadav who owed him Rs 3. Subsequently, Pankaj took out a knife from his pocket and stabbed Yadav.

The victim was taken to a local hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead. The police have arrested Thakur and also seized the knife used in the crime. This is not the first time that people have been killed for such a petty sum. Earlier, in Madhepura, another backward district of Bihar, a butcher had killed the eight-year-old son of a customer who owed him just Rs 20 for the meat he had bought. More...
