A former Malaysian minister has been charged for posting online a stinging attack on Najib Razak, the embattled prime minister, in the latest crackdown in dissent in the country.
Zaid Ibrahim was prosecuted under a catch-all clause of an internet law for making “menacing or offensive” comments on his personal blog for posting the transcript of a speech in which he called for the removal from office of Mr Najib.
The latest of prosecution of a Najib critic came as the ruling coalition in parliament passed draconian new national security legislation that would grant unprecedented emergency powers to the government.
Dogged by a long-running financial scandal, the prime minister has been trying to shore up his authority before the annual conference next week of his party, the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO). Full story...
