It is the high-school maths question that has stumped swathes of the world's numerically literate people.
Singaporean high-school students were presented with this logics problem in their Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad test paper last week, aimed at the top 40 per cent of students in one of the most mathematically gifted countries in the world.
Singaporean TV presenter Kenneth Kong posted the question to his Facebook page, saying it "causes a debate with my wife", and from there it took on a life of its own.
The executive director responsible for administering the examinations, Henry Ong, said the question was deliberately difficult and meant to sift out the better students.
He said he was pleased that the question "has generated so much interest and solutions on the internet".
