Arundhati Roy, the Booker Prize-winning author, has accused India’s Hindu nationalist government of trying to steal the legacy of one of the country’s founding fathers, the ’untouchable’ leader Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar.
Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is behind a “demonic” attempt to portray Ambedkar, the author of India’s constitution and a revered icon for the country’s 300 million ’untouchable’ Dalits, as a Hindu hero, she said.
Her comments were made as both the BJP and the Congress Party laid claim to Ambedkar even though he regarded Hinduism as inhuman and the Congress leader Mahatma Gandhi as a charlatan who pretended to support Dalits while strongly defending India’s brutal caste system.
Dalits are at the very bottom of India’s caste system and are born into degrading work like dry latrine cleaners and scavengers. They are forbidden from marrying higher caste partners, drinking from the same wells, sharing food and in some places even casting their shadow or leaving footprints because they are regarded as 'polluting'.
The battle for Ambedkar’s legacy reflects his enduring popularity among India’s Dalit population and fierce competition for their votes. Full story...
