United States introduces tighter screening measures for travellers from Europe...

The United States government has abruptly introduced new security measures for travellers entering the country from Europe in a move designed to identify potential terrorists with Western passports.

Amid concern about the number of “foreign fighters” returning from Syria and Iraq, the US now asks all those visiting America from countries which do not require a visa to declare if they hold a second passport.

The measure will affect millions of travellers from Europe, Australia and other “friendly” nations who are not required to obtain a visa when visiting the US for short trips, including around 2.5 million British tourists a year.

As many as 2,000 Islamist militants are thought to have travelled from Britain, Australia and other western countries to Syria and Iraq in recent months to join up with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil).
