The Netherlands is to rent out empty jail cells to Norway to ease overcrowding in Norwegian prisons.
Three hundred Norwegians will be housed in Dutch prisons at a time when the Netherlands is closing down 19 penal facilities due to a lack of domestic criminals.
Fred Teeven, the Dutch justice minister who is in charge of the prison service, defended a deal that will see the arrival of foreign criminals found guilty of offences including violent and sex crimes but that will save over 700 jobs.
“In Norway there is a capacity shortage, and right now we have a surplus,” he said.
The prisons will have Norwegian management and be run according to Norwegian rules but the warders will be Dutch. Full story...
