More than 300 of India’s senior bureaucrats have been given copies of Sir Alex Ferguson’s autobiography to motivate them, under the orders of the country’s new energy minister.
Narendra Modi, the Indian prime minister who led his Bharatiya Janata Party to a landslide victory last month, has asked his ministers to shake up the unresponsive civil service to push through ambitious plans, including accelerating investment, boosting infrastructure and cleaning up cities and rivers.
Piyush Goel, Mr Modi’s new head of the Power, Coal and Renewable Energy “super-ministry”, has taken note.
A Manchester United fan, he is convinced Sir Alex’s example will help boost India’s growth rate by up to two per cent.
