Putin's allies turn out in force as western leaders stay away from Sochi...

Western leaders - including Barack Obama, David Cameron and Angela Merkel - may have stayed away from Sochi in protest at Russia's anti-gay laws, but 55 world leaders attended Friday night's long and lavish opening ceremony.

International big hitters including Xi Jinping, the Chinese president, Recip Tayipp Erdogan of Turkey, and Japan's Shinzo Abe, were among those watching the three-hour spectacular hosted by Vladimir Putin.

The Russian authorities claimed it was a record number of heads of government and state to attend a winter Olympics.

The £31 billion games - the most expensive winter or summer Games ever staged - have been regarded as a test of the Russian president's leadership as much as modern Russia's ability to stage a major sporting event.

Despite fears of a terror attack, as of Friday night, none had materialised. Full story...
