Lalu Yadav convicted over 'fodder scandal' in blow to Indian government...

One of the most senior leaders in India’s Congress-led coalition government was on Monday jailed after becoming the highest profile politician to be convicted of corruption.

Lalu Prasad Yadav, former Indian railways minister and chief minister of Bihar, was found guilty for his part in taking millions of pounds of public money in the so-called 'fodder scam’. Another 44 people were convicted in the case, including Jaggannath Mishra, another former state chief minister.

All were found guilty of siphoning the equivalent of around £200 million pounds at today’s prices in false expenses claims from the government in Bihar - one of India’s poorest states - for feed and medicines for non-existent livestock. The fraud, which involved politicians from several parties, civil servants and local businessmen, was uncovered in 1996.

His conviction is an embarrassment and setback to the Congress-led government and follows a series of arrests of several senior party and coalition figures. Suresh Kalmadi, the Congress MP and head of its organising committee for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, A Raja, former head of the Telecommunications ministry and Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, a Tamil MP and daughter of the leader of the Congress-allied DMK party, have all been jailed in corruption inquiries.
