French prisoner sends severed finger to justice minister...

An inmate in a French jail has mailed part of his own severed finger to the justice minister hoping the desperate gesture would help his plea to be moved to another prison, officials said on Thursday.

An envelope containing the chunk of finger was delivered to the offices of Justice Minister Christiane Taubira, accompanied by a letter arguing for a transfer to a jail nearer to the inmate’s family, a police official said.

Tragically, the prisoner's request had already been approved when the digit arrived, a spokesman said. "We were just waiting for a space to become free in the region requested."

In one of France's most celebrated cases of wrongful conviction, Roland Agret sent pieces of one of his fingers to the then justice minister in 1983 and 1984 in order to protest his innocence. His 1970 conviction for complicity in a murder was quashed in 1985. Full story...
