The tragedy of the 100,000 Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in India...

More than 100,000 Sri Lankan Tamil live in exile in India.

The first batch of refugees arrived in the Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu in the early 80s immediately after the armed confrontation between Tamil rebels and Sri Lankan forces began.

Since then Indian has been the most preferred destination for a majority of Sri Lankan refugees.

But in recent years the situation has changed and many refugees are now desperately trying to get out of India and have been risking their lives to make dangerous sea voyages to other countries.

The authorities say the refugees are falling prey to human traffickers but the activists blame what they call the “mistreatment” of refugees for the situation. Full story...
