White man circumcised and initiated as a Xhosa...

AFTER years of being taunted for being an inkwenkwe – a Xhosa term for uncircumcised boys – Mark Poulton of Amalinda, East London yesterday (November 19) finally took the plunge and became a Xhosa initiate and ultimately a man.

At the age of 30 , which is considered old for an initiate, Poulton went naked and braved it in front traditional surgeon Andile Siko at the bush near the Amalinda SPCA. A group of men watched with interest, awaiting the cry ndiyindoda! (I am a man) – marking the start of his journey to manhood. More...
