Indian student who opposed CCTVs banned for life by university...

Brushing aside all murmurs of protest among the student community, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) administration decided to rusticate and impose a life-long campus ban on Adil Hussain, a post-graduate student of mass communication. Hussain was suspended last month for his active participation in the protest against installation of CCTVs on the university campus.

The VC's decision to install more than 70 CCTV cameras, night vision devices covering the university buildings, gates and playgrounds etc had led to a sustained whispering campaign. Students strongly objected to the idea of being under surveillance 24x7 even as the university officials justified the move as unavoidable in order to keep away the unwanted elements and provide security to the teachers and the students. Hussain, in his enthusiasm, had made a critical remarks on the development and in a critical piece which obviously did not go well with authorities and he was suspended on June 1. More...
