A Chinese and an Indian restaurant at war ... over who gets to sell rice!!!

Chinese food has been served with rice for centuries. So has Indian food. It only feels as though the rice war between two adjacent restaurants in the Providence Place mall's food court has gone on that long.

Cathay Cathay and Gourmet India are fighting over the right to serve the staple of each native cuisine. Start with one businessman's willingness to pay dearly to avoid competition, mix in the other's insistence on preserving his own culinary tradition, and add a decision by the Rhode Island Supreme Court to keep the pot boiling for almost four years with hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees.

Suite...

Cholera? Starvation? Crazy inflation? No worries! Mugabe organises big party ... for is birthday!!!

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe celebrates his 85th birthday on Saturday at a huge party which critics say is insensitive to an economic crisis which has left many families destitute.

The veteran Zimbabwean leader will, for the first time at such a party, be joined by opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, his new partner in a power-sharing government formed early this month.

Mugabe, Zimbabwe's sole ruler for nearly three decades, is holding onto power despite economic and political turmoil that have forced him into a unity government with the opposition. More...

Suite...

After the cell-phone found inside a buffalo, another one's found inside a fish!!!

A BUSINESSMAN who lost his mobile phone on a beach was amazed when it turned up — in the belly of a massive cod.

Andrew Cheatle thought his Nokia handset had been lost at sea after it slipped from his pocket.

But a week later his girlfriend’s mobile rang and it was fisherman Glen Kerley saying he’d found the phone in a 25lb fish.

Andrew got the handset back, dried it out — and amazingly it still works. More...

We have a choice: either we can believe that the British state is peculiarly immune to tyrannical instincts that are beginning to show in this government or we can now start to oppose what is going on. We have a very short time to save our society from this nightmare, as has been made clear by Sir Ken Macdonald, the former DPP, Dame Stella Rimington, the former head of MI5, and the House of Lord constitutional committee.

Big Brother drones that track the Taliban may soon hover over your home...

Pilotless planes used to track the Taliban could soon be hovering over our streets, it has emerged.

Remote-controlled drones are already used widely by the military. Now ministers believe they are likely to become 'increasingly useful' for police work.

Armed with heat-seeking cameras, the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles would hover hundreds of feet in the air, gathering intelligence and watching suspects.

In theory, their advantages are clear. They are cheaper and quieter than conventional helicopters, can circle their target for hours without refuelling - and they don't get bored on long surveillance missions.

However, their use is likely to further fuel concerns about our march towards a Big Brother state. Britain already has more CCTV cameras than the rest of Europe put together. More...

India: confused pilot mistakes cricket pitch for landing pad!!! Howzat?

A helicopter stopped play in a domestic cricket game in India after the pilot mistook the pitch for a landing pad, local media reported Sunday.

Players were forced to abort Saturday's one-day game and scurry for cover when the hapless pilot set the chopper down on the letter 'H' painted in the corner of the cricket ground.

The 'H' stands for the name of the Himachal Pradesh team in the north-west Indian state.

A fire near the stadium also added to the confusion of the pilot, who misinterpreted it for smoke signals, according to the Hindustan Times.

The unscheduled arrival of the helicopter, owned by a private airline, halted play for almost half an hour before the red-faced pilot buzzed off again.

"It landed suddenly. No one knew what was happening," the competing Punjab team manager told the paper after his side won the interrupted game. "There was chaos. Everyone ran for cover."

Best job in the world: painting Brazil's nude carnival models!!!

The 36-year-old artist awakes at 8 a.m. Has a little breakfast. Survives a commute through the city's tough traffic. Arrives at the office by 11.

Then he spends hours painting the bodies of gorgeous women—and earning as much as $2,000 a day.

"You wouldn't believe how many applications I get for an assistant," Almeida deadpanned, never taking his eyes from his work as he brushed bright orange paint on the stomach of a model in his glass-enclosed studio under the grandstands at the Sambadrome, where Rio's Carnival parades ended Tuesday at dawn.

Suite...

Would you kill your mother to cut down on expenses? A couple in India did just that...

A government employee in a West Bengal village and his wife were arrested for allegedly killing his 82-year-old mother, reportedly because they wanted to cut down on their expenditure, the police said Monday.

Madan Mohan Nag, 58, and his wife Maniprabha Nag were arrested from their residence in Jamalpur village in Burdwan district Sunday.

The couple might have killed Shanti Lata Nag, Madan Mohan Nag's mother, to cut down on expenditure as Madan Mohan Nag was to retire soon, the police said.

'We've presented the couple in the Burdwan district court today (Monday),' said a police officer of Jamalpur police station in Burdwan district.

Madan Mohan Nag was a state irrigation department employee of Memari area.

'Our investigation is on,' the officer said.

According to sources, the local residents got a foul smell Sunday morning and immediately informed the police. The police came and recovered the rotting body of Shanti Lata Nag from the backyard of Madan Mohan Nag's residence.

The body was found wrapped in a blanket.

Later, local people lodged a first information report (FIR) with the police station and the couple was arrested. The local people also alleged that the family used to torture the old woman.

UBS clients in the US in a state of panic...

UBS customers in the United States are coming forward to declare their secret bank accounts amid fear of serious financial and legal repercussions.

Some US lawyers say calls to their offices have shot up since the Swiss banking giant announced last Wednesday that it would hand over confidential details of some 250 clients the American tax authorities suspect of tax evasion.

Zimbabwe expats in Hong Kong not happy about Mugabe proximity...

When Helen left her native Zimbabwe and travelled across the world to a new life in Hong Kong, the last person she would have chosen to follow her was the man she blamed unequivocally for the ruin of her homeland: Robert Mugabe, dpa reported.

Her peace of mind was shattered when a report surfaced earlier this month that the African country's 85-year-old president, who 30-year stranglehold on power may be loosening as Zimbabwe sinks deeper into economic and political chaos, has bought a home in the city worth 5 million US dollars.

"It has all come as a huge shock," said the businesswoman, who in common with other Zimbabwean expatriates living in Hong Kong asked for her identity and personal details to be disguised for fear of recriminations against family members still living in the country. More...

Suite...

Zoo in Malaysia names lion cubs Obama and Hillary!!!

Zookeepers in Malaysia's southern Johor state have named two new African lion cubs after US President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, a news report said Tuesday.

Obama and Hillary, along with another female cub yet to be named, were born in captivity at the Johor Zoo on January 16, zookeeper Mohamad Sham Mahdon Said said.

"Obama the president and Obama the lion cub can both trace their ancestry back to Africa, so there is a definite connection there," Mohamad Sham was quoted as saying by the Star daily.

The cubs were born to Siti and Sarip, nine-year old African lions.

"It is curious, playful and hates being caged up," Mohamad Sham said of little Obama.

Obama and Hillary have been the major draw at the zoo since their birth, with tourists and visitors flocking to have their pictures taken with the namesakes of the US politicians.

American Jews slam Israeli policy in Gaza...

As human beings, we are shocked and appalled at the mass destruction unleashed by the State of Israel against the people of Gaza in its military operation, following years of Israeli occupation, siege, and deprivation.

As Americans, we protest the carte blanche given Israel by the US government to pursue a war of “national honor,” “restoring deterrence,” “destroying Hamas,” and “searing Israel’s military might into the consciousness of the Gazans.”

(...)

But as Jews of different religious persuasions, from Orthodox to secular atheist, we are especially horrified that a state that purports to speak in our name wages a military campaign that has killed over 1,400 people, a large percentage of them civilians, children, and non-combatants, with little or no consideration for human rights or the laws of war. How Citibank got suckered by the Nigerian e-mail scam...

Swindles in which someone overseas seeks access to a person’s bank account are so well known that most potential victims can spot them in seconds.

But one man found success by tweaking the formula, prosecutors say: Rather than trying to dupe an account holder into giving up information, he duped the bank. And instead of swindling a person, he tried to rob a country — of $27 million.

To carry out the elaborate scheme, prosecutors in New York said on Friday, the man, identified as Paul Gabriel Amos, 37, a Nigerian citizen who lived in Singapore, worked with others to create official-looking documents that instructed Citibank to wire the money in two dozen transactions to accounts that Mr. Amos and the others controlled around the world. Kate Winslet’s strange premonition?

After recently speaking to Kate Winslet about “The Reader,”  we remembered this small item about the British star who is favorite for a best actress Oscar at the weekend for her portrayal of a former concentration guard in “The Reader”.

(...)

Asked why she had accepted the role, her character – and it should be said Winslet was playing it firmly tongue-in-cheek in keeping with the spirit of the show — replies: “I’m doing it because I’ve noticed that if you do a film about the Holocaust, (you’re) guaranteed an Oscar. Full story...

Swiss warning on US move over UBS clients...

Switzerland’s finance minister has accused US authorities of “shock” tactics to compel holders of undeclared UBS accounts to come forward, but warned that court action to discover the names of thousands of clients would not succeed.

Hans-Rudolf Merz, finance minister and Switzerland’s head of state this year under its rotating presidency, defended the Swiss government’s role in prompting the world’s biggest wealth manager to breach hallowed bank secrecy and last week reveal some 250-300 client names to the US. More...

AN INDONESIAN dubbed "Tree Man" because of massive bark-like warts all over his body underwent a ninth round of surgery today to remove more of the growths, a doctor said.

Dede Koswara, 38, had extensive treatment last year for the first time to cut off 13.2kg of the fast-growing warts, but the doctor warned they are rapidly growing back.

"No cure for the disease exists yet, so he needs operations every three to four months because the warts keep on growing," said Rachmatdinata, director of Hasan Sadikin Hospital in Bandung city, West Java. More...

George Bush turns down hardware store job!!!

George W Bush has paid a jokey visit to a hardware store in Dallas, Texas, which offered him a job as a greeter.

The former US president entered the Elliott's outlet with his security detail saying "I'm looking for a job", store manager Andrea Bond said.

The owner of the Texas chain made the offer earlier this month in a letter published in a Dallas newspaper.

But despite not yet having a publisher for his memoirs, Mr Bush decided on reflection to turn the job down. More...

Hillary Clinton in China: whatever happened to human rights?

STATE security agents put dozens of dissidents under virtual house arrest yesterday to silence support for Charter 08 – a new manifesto for Chinese democracy – as Hillary Clinton made her first visit to Beijing as US secretary of state.

The crackdown emerged as Amnesty International condemned Clinton for saying that human rights could not interfere with talks on the financial crisis, global warming and North Korea.

As foreign minister Yang Jiechi welcomed her with a broad smile, he observed that it was “a bit chilly” in Beijing but promised Clinton she would see “the biggest number of smiling faces”. More...

"The Unknown Citizen " by W.H. Auden...

(To JS/07 M 378
This Marble Monument
Is Erected by the State)

He was found by the Bureau of Statistics to be

One against whom there was no official complaint,

And all the reports on his conduct agree

That, in the modern sense of an old-fashioned word, he was a saint,

For in everything he did he served the Greater Community.

Except for the War till the day he retired

He worked in a factory and never got fired,

But satisfied his employers, Fudge Motors Inc.

Yet he wasn't a scab or odd in his views,

For his Union reports that he paid his dues,

(Our report on his Union shows it was sound)

And our Social Psychology workers found

That he was popular with his mates and liked a drink.

The Press are convinced that he bought a paper every day

And that his reactions to advertisements were normal in every way.

Policies taken out in his name prove that he was fully insured,

And his Health-card shows he was once in hospital but left it cured.

Both Producers Research and High-Grade Living declare

He was fully sensible to the advantages of the Installment Plan

And had everything necessary to the Modern Man,

A phonograph, a radio, a car and a frigidaire.

Our researchers into Public Opinion are content

That he held the proper opinions for he time of year;

When there was peace, he was for peace; when there was war, he went.

He was married and added five children to the population,

Which our Eugenist says was the right number for a parent of his generation.

And our teachers report that he never interfered with their education.

Was he free? Was he happy?

The question is absurd:

Had anything been wrong, we should certainly have heard.

Gruesome killing poses another test for US Muslims...

The crime was so brutal, shocking and rife with the worst possible stereotypes about their faith that some U.S. Muslims thought the initial reports were a hoax.

Royalty slamming Aussie author out of Thai jail...

Australian Harry Nicolaides is out of prison and on his way home to Melbourne after being pardoned by Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the author's brother said Saturday, according to dpa.

Nicolaides was released from a Bangkok prison on Friday, Forde Nicolaides told Australia's AAP news agency.

He was arrested in August and jailed last month on a conviction for insulting the royal family.

The minimum sentence under Thailand's harsh lese majeste law, which makes it a criminal offence to insult or belittle the royal family, is three years imprisonment. The maximum sentence is 15 years.

"I'm absolutely ecstatic," Forde said. "This is a huge relief for the family after a terrible time, one which obviously has consumed us for the last six months."

Nicolaides, 41, pleaded guilty to lese majeste in 12 lines he wrote in his 2005 novel, Verisimilitude, which referred to an unspecified crown prince's love life.

Only seven copies of the book were sold.

Suite...

After the Bernard Madoff fraud, here comes Allen Stanford...

FBI agents in the US state of Virginia have served Texan billionaire Sir Allen Stanford with civil legal papers from the US financial watchdog, the SEC.

Sir Allen, who disappeared from public view on Tuesday when he was accused by the SEC of an $8bn (£5.6bn) fraud, is believed to be in the Richmond area.

He is not in custody and has not been charged with any criminal violations.

The SEC filed a civil case in court describing the case as a "fraud of shocking magnitude". More...

How Hollywood manipulates public opinion...

When I returned from the war in Vietnam, I wrote a film script as an antidote to the myth that the war had been an ill-fated noble cause. The producer David Puttnam took the draft to Hollywood and offered it to the major studios, whose responses were favorable – well, almost. Each issued a report card in which the final category, "politics," included comments such as: "This is real, but are the American people ready for it? Maybe they'll never be."

By the late 1970s, Hollywood judged Americans ready for a different kind of Vietnam movie. The first was The Deer Hunter which, according to Time, "articulates the new patriotism." The film celebrated immigrant America, with Robert de Niro as a working class hero ("liberal by instinct") and the Vietnamese as sub-human Oriental barbarians and idiots, or "gooks." The dramatic peak was reached during recurring orgiastic scenes in which GIs were forced to play Russian roulette by their Vietnamese captors. This was made up by the director Michael Cimino, who also made up a story that he had served in Vietnam. "I have this insane feeling that I was there," he said. "Somehow... the line between reality and fiction has become blurred." More...

The shot chimp heard round the world, a coded racist cartoon?

Did cartoonist Sean Delonas intend for his cartoon, which ran in the New York Post on Wednesday, to be racist? Or was it, as the newspaper claims, "clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut" which "broadly mocks Washington's efforts to revive the economy"?

Although we all have our own take on what this cartoon may or may not mean, nobody knows for sure what exactly was going through Delonas's mind when he created it. But if we are to take the artist and the paper's word for it, this was – at the very least – an extremely sloppy and poorly executed sketch. More...

UBS refuses to reveal info about 52,000 US secret accounts...

Swiss bank UBS has refused a US government demand to provide information on 52,000 US clients.

The request was made in a lawsuit filed earlier in the day in Miami as part of a tax fraud investigation.

The Obama administration wants UBS to turn over information on American customers who hid accounts from US authorities, in violation of tax laws. More...

Suite...

Sarkozy visits town of 1,600 - accompanied by 700 police!!!

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, angered by protest incidents in the past, is now paying visits to local communities with protection provided by hundreds of police and gendarmes, officials confirmed Thursday. A visit to the Loire valley town of Daumeray with a population of 1,600, took place with 700 police providing security, the gendarme office in Angers said.

Sarkozy visited a farm there, where he made remarks about modernisation taking place in French agriculture.

The French president has lately expressed his frustration at demonstrations staged during visits to the provinces.

For example, in Saint-Lo in northern France a demonstrator hurled his shoes at Sarkozy, an incident for which he punished two high- ranking province officials by having them transferred elsewhere.

UBS move shakes foundations of Swiss bank secrecy...

Switzerland's president declared Thursday that his country will hold onto its treasured tradition of confidential bank accounts, even as it took the unprecedented step of revealing over 250 tax cheats to U.S. authorities.

"Banking secrecy, ladies and gentlemen, remains intact," President Hans-Rudolf Merz told reporters.

Merz said Swiss authorities handed over the files on 250 to 300 American clients of Swiss bank UBS AG who are suspected of committing tax fraud. The transfer took place in the middle of the night in the Swiss capital Bern, just ahead of a U.S. deadline for Swiss cooperation, he said.

Switzerland's largest bank and U.S. officials have been negotiating intensely since allegations surfaced last year that UBS helped as many as 17,000 Americans conceal up to $20 billion. More...

Britons flee French island of Guadeloupe as rioters turn on white families...

Britons are among thousands of tourists fleeing Guadeloupe after full scale urban warfare erupted on the French Caribbean island.

Trouble broke out on the island earlier last month after protesters began rioting over high prices and low wages.

But the situation escalated this week after protesters began turning on rich white families as they demanded an end to colonial control of the economy.

The troubles come at the height of the holiday season, with thousands of mainly British, French and American tourists on the paradise tropical island. More...

Suite...

Suite...

Yemeni Jews pay heavy price for Israel's Gaza killings...

They have closed their three synagogues and two schools, and avoid public places -- members of the small Jewish community of Raydah in northern Yemen are gripped by fear.

The 260 Jews who stayed on in the area used to coexist comfortably with their Muslim neighbours.

But on December 11, Masha Yaish al-Nahari, a father-of-nine who taught Hebrew at one of the community's two schools, was gunned down by a Muslim.

"In the past, we lived in security, but now, we are all afraid," the victim's father Yaeish al-Nahari said at his home in Raydah, a large dusty agricultural town swept by the wind. More...
