Britain: Police given new powers to hack into personal computers...

Police will be allowed to hack into home computers without a warrant, after the Home Office adopted a plan put forward by European Union ministers to increase their powers of surveillance.

Under the plans, officers will be able to hack into personal hard drives remotely, using either malware contained in an e-mail, a wireless network outside a house, or a device attached to a computer that records the user's activity.

The hacking methods will be used to combat criminals using the web, such as identity thieves and terrorists. But civil liberties campaigners say the plans are "intrusive". More...
