Every Scot is to be vaccinated against swine flu...

Every person in Scotland is to be vaccinated against swine flu, the government has announced - at a total cost of more than £100m.

The updated pledge from Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon came as another two Glasgow schoolchildren were confirmed yesterday as the latest victims of the virus.

One new patient is the 13-year-old son of a critically-ill man undergoing treatment at the Victoria Infirmary, and the other is a five year old who came in contact with another of the man's children.

(...)

The vaccine is still in development, with the first doses due to be manufactured by September.

Health workers will be first in line to receive the vaccination, followed by children, the elderly, then the rest of the Scottish population. Full story...

My childhood in the North Korean paradise...

I was nine when I saw my first execution. The man had been condemned to death for stealing copper wire to sell in China, crossing the border under the cover of darkness. He was dragged to the foot of the mountain near a railway track. A train that happened to pass stopped to let passengers watch the scene.

Executions were a frequent occurrence in our small city, but the inhabitants never tired of them. Primary and secondary school pupils skipped classes to join the audience, which always consisted of hundreds, even thousands, of people. Posters went up in the city several days before. When the time came, the condemned man was displayed in the streets before being led to the place of execution, where he was made to sit on the ground, head bowed, so everyone could get a good look at him. He was dressed in a garment designed by army scientists for public executions, a greyish one-piece suit made of very thick, fleece-lined cotton. That way, when the bullets are fired, the blood doesn't spurt out but is absorbed by this fabric, which turns red. The body is thrown on a cart and then abandoned in the mountains for the dogs to eat. More...

Shocking! Upset!

Yes, that's right: Susan Boyle, who became instantly beloved, and almost as instantly overexposed, after singing "I Dreamed A Dream" on Britain's Got Talent, didn't win the final, which is being treated as a massive shock in most corners.

Blondes march in Latvia to create positive energy!!! Wow!

Several hundred blonde women marched through the Latvian capital Riga yesterday in a bid to cheer up the crisis-hit Baltic nation, suffering the worst recession of all 27 EU member states.

Led by an orchestra, the first-ever blonde parade featured women dressed in pink and white, some accompanied by lapdogs, in a charity fund-raising event that organisers hope will become an annual event.

An Egyptian cut off his own penis on Sunday in protest at his parents' choice of bride, a police official said.

The 25-year-old laborer from the village of Sheikh Eissa in southern Egypt was taken to hospital in stable condition, the official said, adding that the man had also mutilated his testicles.

"He was in love with a woman but his parents rejected her and told him to marry another woman he didn't want. He took a knife and cut off his penis in his room."

Doctors were unable to reattach the severed member, the official said.

Gujarat in India, and the great carbon credit con...

The farmers, faces wizened and browned from hours in the harsh Gujarati sun, lower a bucket into a well. It’s a solid-brick cylinder 100ft deep. The sun is high in the sky, beating down on the scorched earth. In the baked fields, maize and cotton have been planted. But none of the crops look very healthy. Leaves are wilted and tinged brown. Nothing has been watered for months.

Radha, a tough, sinewy widow and the only female farmer here, says that the well, which draws from deep groundwater, used to adequately supply the village and surrounding farms.

‘We have plenty of water – but water is the problem,’ she says. More...

Paris buys 100 million doses of anti-viral vaccine...

France in preparations for a possible increase in swine flu cases in the coming winter has purchased 100 million doses of vaccines against the A(H1N1) virus, the French weekly Journal du Dimanche reported Sunday. It is unclear whether the national health care system or the treasury would be picking up the tab.

So far around 100 people have died worldwide from the new influenza, also known as swine flu. According to experts, the spread of the disease has been slowed by warmer weather, and a wave of infections is expected come winter.

France has seen 24 cases out of the worldwide total of more than 15,500.

Obama doublespeak on North Korea...

"Obama Calls on World to ‘Stand Up To’ North Korea” read the headline. The United States, Obama said, was determined to protect “the peace and security of the world.”

Shades of doublespeak, doublethink, 1984.

North Korea is a small place. China alone could snuff it out in a few minutes. Yet, the president of the US thinks that nothing less than the entire world is a match for North Korea.

We are witnessing the Washington gangsters construct yet another threat like Slobodan Milosevic, Osama bin Laden, Saddam Hussein, John Walker Lindh, Hamdi, Padilla, Sami Al-Arian, Hamas, Mahkmoud Ahmadinejad, and the hapless detainees demonized by the US Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld as “the 700 most dangerous terrorists on the face of the earth,” who were tortured for six years at Gitmo only to be quietly released.

1984, George Orwell's dying legacy...

Nineteen Eighty-Four was published in London on Wednesday June 8, 1949 and in New York five days later. The world was eager for it. Within 12 months it had sold around 50,000 hardbacks in the UK; in the US sales were more than one-third of a million. It became a phenomenon.

Sixty years later no one can say how many millions of copies are in print, both in legitimate editions and samizdat versions. It has been adapted for radio, stage, television and cinema, has been studied, copied and parodied and, above all, ransacked for its ideas and images.

As I write, the Daily Mail is reporting that “town halls are routinely using controversial ‘Big Brother’ surveillance laws to spy on their own employees”; the Los Angeles Times is describing a Republican party consultant as “a master of the black art of political newspeak”; The Village Voice is citing “a ripe example of doublethink”; and The Guardian is profiling a community leader “attacked as part of the PC thought police”. Pakistanis rising up against Taliban...

THE first thing Sadaffe Abid did when she heard Wednesday’s massive bomb rattling the windows in her office four miles away was, like most residents of Lahore, to telephone to check on family and friends. However, what she did next was more surprising.

“I told them we should come out on to the streets to protest against these militants,” she said. “This bomb was meant to turn public opinion against the army operation to clear the Taliban from Swat, and we shouldn’t give in.”

The stylishly dressed Abid, 35, is chief executive of a foundation providing microfinance for rural women, and says until recently she never thought the Taliban were anything to do with her. More...

Illiterate Indians in Malaysia victims of slavery...

Many illiterate ethnic Indians in Malaysia are falling prey to scams by organized syndicates who lure them with well-paying jobs and later treat them like slaves, a leading daily here reported on Saturday.

Wanting a better life for their family and eager to escape the grip of poverty, many ethnic Indians fall victim to the scam which has been kept under close wraps by syndicates, the New Straits Times said in a report from Malacca.

One of the victims, M Nadarajah, 47, said the syndicate members were like "thugs, who exerted force to instil fear so that we dare not go against them." He alleged that he and some others victims were abused verbally and physically.

Nadarajah said his captor had also threatened to sell his children, especially his two girls, if he escaped, the paper reported.

The newspaper, however, did not give any details of how many victims were lured by the syndicate. There was also no mention of any action by the police.

UN under fire for selling-out to Sri Lanka...

The United Nations has been accused of failing in its duties to speak out against abuses in Sri Lanka and release credible information in its possession.

The UN European headquarters in Geneva on Friday denied there had been a cover-up.

Le Monde newspaper accused the UN of covering up the "severity of the massacres" in Sri Lanka for fear of compromising its humanitarian operations and of being expelled from the island.

The French newspaper cited UN figures putting the death toll in the Sri Lanka government's final onslaught against Tamil Tiger rebels at 7,720, including 678 children, between January 20 and May 13, while 18,465 people were injured, 2,384 of them children. More...

If they knew the truth, they'd hate us even more...

We Americans like to think of ourselves as civilized people. Historically, we have supported our government in war under the belief that our government and our soldiers are honorable and that we do not engage in unjust wars. Ugly things like genocide, torture, naked aggression, raping, pillaging, and scorched earth policies are things that others do, not us. Since we are so good and virginal in every sense, we reason that others hate us only because of our goodness and purity. If they knew the truth about us, we think, they would love us.

Yet, if this is so, why is it that we need to hide from the world the activities of our soldiers and intelligence agents over seas? Why cannot we, the “liberators” of Iraq, show the world the lovely photos of our soldiers at work Abu Ghraib? Why must the CIA consider destroying the records of American conduct in the prisons at Guantanamo? We are so pure, clean, honorable, and all, aren't we? What have we got to worry about? More...

More than 20,000 Tamil civilians were killed in the final throes of the Sri Lankan civil war, most as a result of government shelling, an investigation by The Times has revealed.

The number of casualties is three times the official figure.

The Sri Lankan authorities have insisted that their forces stopped using heavy weapons on April 27 and observed the no-fire zone where 100,000 Tamil men, women and children were sheltering. The war in Somalia, in pictures...

While Somalia recently has been in the news for its notorious pirates, back on-shore the country continues to struggle through a years-long war that has intensified lately, and to seek some sort of functional unifying government. Back in January, the Transitional Federal Parliament of Somalia elected moderate Islamist Sharif Sheikh Ahmed as President. Ahmed has gained international backing in his efforts to bring an end to 18 years of civil conflict. However, hard-line Islamist groups such as al Shabaab, Hezb al-Islamiya and others continue to reject the government and have been attacking its forces and civilians for years now, most of the fighting taking place in the capital city of Mogadishu. The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) provides over 3,000 troops to maintain security where it can. Since the start of this insurgency in December 2006, nearly 17,000 civilians have lost their lives. See images...

Literature is illegal in Palestine...

i went to the last night of the palestine festival of literature expecting that it would be shut down yet again. a friend of mine in the old city had bumped into one of the actors in al hakawati (the palestinian national theatre) and she told him that they were already planning to move it somewhere else. but when i went there to meet him everything was getting set up so it seemed that this was just a rumor. i arrived an hour early because my friends are in a book discussion group every thursday night so i went to join them as i sometimes do. but five minutes after they got started israeli terrorist soldiers invaded al hakawati. they came in and posted a court order in hebrew and arabic on the door and asked everyone to leave the theatre.

Indian passengers refuse Air France compensation for "racial profiling" and demand more...

A group of 53 Indian passengers, who were allegedly subjected to racial profiling by Air France at Paris Airport on May 10, have threatened to move court if the airlines did not provide compensation in accordance with law.

Air France has offered €350 per passenger to settle the matter. But the aggrieved passengers have said they cannot accept anything less than €650 as compensation.

Indian students being attacked in Australia...

In a fresh incident of racial attack on Indians in Australia, a 25-year old student was stabbed here, even as another youth from Andhra Pradesh was battling for life after an assault by local teenagers.

Baljinder Singh, 25, was attacked on Monday night when two men carrying weapons approached, the 'Herald Sun' reported.

The attackers demanded money and as Singh was searching through his bag to hand over his wallet he was stabbed in the abdomen. Singh screamed for his life, his attackers laughed and fled the scene, the report said. More...

Yin and Yang crop circle in Wiltshire...

Is this an amazing work of art, or of something from science-fiction?

The neat, intricate pattern does pose the question - how on earth was it made?

The huge crop circle sculpted in a sea of barley seems to be based on the Yin and Yang theme, and appeared near an ancient British burial mound beneath Windmill Hill near Devizes, Wiltshire on 25 May.

The ancient area of Wiltshire close to Silbury Hill, Windmill Hill and the Sanctuary is a hot spot for crop circles. More...

Suite...

Child labour, a necessity in Bangladesh...

As one of the world's leading suppliers of ready made garments , Bangladesh frequently encounters hostile criticism over the use of child labour in its textile industry.

Western retailers have rushed to assure conscience-stricken consumers that steps are taken to eradicate the practice, and in 2006 the Bangladeshi government passed a new labour law.

It enshrines the rights of young workers to receive a fixed salary, compensation in case of accident, proper holidays and to have access to education.

But that law is only designed to help children in the textile sector, so it does nothing to ease the problem of child labour in one of the poorest countries in the world. More...

The most popular leader in the Middle East? Hugo Chavez...

The results of the new survey of 'Arab opinion' conducted by Zogby International show that Barack Obama has a much more favourable rating than did his predecessor as US president. But when asked to name the world leaders whom they most admire, the participants put the President of Venezuela at the top of the poll.

The survey, which was conducted in April and May 2009, sampled the views of 4,087 people in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Lebanon, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates. According to the respected Zogby polling organisation, the poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.6%. One of the questions put to the participants was "which two world leaders (outside your own country) do you admire most?" The most frequently named leader is Hugo Chavez, at 36%. Following Chavez in order of admiration are Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad and former President of France Jacques Chirac (both at 18%), Osama bin Laden (16%), Mohammed bin Zayed, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi (15%) and the current French president Nicolas Sarkozy (14%). Were the US moon missions faked as many believe?

There is something wrong with US mission to the Moon. The legendary space mission is still shrouded in mystery. Mankind still has a number of reasons to cast doubt on the miracle of inter-planetary flights. Many people still say that US astronauts have never landed on the Moon.

Japan’s Kaguya lunar orbiter took several pictures of the site, where Apollo 15 and Apollo 17 supposedly landed in 1971 and 1972. If the astronauts had ever landed there, they should have left a lot of equipment on the site, including the rovers, on which they traveled on the surface of the Earth’s satellite. The pictures, which the Japanese rover took, showed not even the slightest hint of the US presence on the Moon. More...

A man in China had a leech in his nose for 5 years!!!

A man who was suffering from nose bleeding for several years is feeling a lot better since doctors extracted from his nose a 10-inch leech that had been living there for five years, reports a daily from South China.

According to the Canton Daily, as quoted by the China Daily, the 73-year-old man, called Fu, a bare-foot doctor in a village in the South, decided to consult a doctor after his nose kept bleeding for 10 consecutive days.

Fu thinks the leech got into his nose about five years ago, the time when his hemorrhagic symptoms and nasal congestions started, probably at a moment when he was drinking some spring water in the mountains as he was collecting herbs.

The UN sells its soul to Sri Lanka! (War victims everywhere take heed; no one cares about you...)

Sri Lanka last night scored a major propaganda coup when the UN human rights council praised its victory over the Tamil Tigers and refused calls to investigate allegations of war crimes by both sides in the final chapter of a bloody 25-year conflict.

In a shock move, which dismayed western nations critical of Sri Lanka's approach, the island's diplomats succeeded in lobbying enough of its south Asian allies to pass a resolution describing the conflict as a "domestic matter that doesn't warrant outside interference". More...

Man in India beaten to death for stealing cell-phone...

A youth was tied to a tree and beaten to death for allegedly stealing a cellphone at Bachepally village in Kalheru mandal of Medak district late on Tuesday night.

The body of the accused, Vadla Kistaiah (28), was found tied to a neem tree close to his house early on Wednesday by some passers-by, who immediately alerted the police.

Sources said three women and three men went to Kistaiah’s house when he was asleep, dragged him out and tied him to the tree. They then launched a brutal attack on him, beating him up with sticks. On a fog-filled stage, as the six women of the Ashira band rocked before their die-hard fans, a man entered the auditorium - and was promptly asked to leave.

The band has been playing together for three years and the crowds have grown steadily in numbers. But the band has held fast to one golden rule: No men are allowed.

The band's members are all Orthodox Jewish women and, guided by a rabbinical injunction that says it is immodest for a man to listen to a woman's voice in song, they perform only before other women. More...

In Malaysia there's a Temple of Lucky Pigs!!!

Come dusk, a flurry of excitement can be felt at a tiny and usually quiet Hindu temple as hundreds of people gather to greet the site’s most-honored guests — rough-skinned, hairy and hungry wild boars.

The Jeda Munisvarar Temple, nestled within a forest clearing in the sleepy town of Taiping in Malaysia’s northern state of Perak, is fast gaining the attention of devotees and the not-so-faithful, since word got round that the temple was a gathering site for good-luck wild boars.

“About a year back, some pilgrims rubbed pieces of paper with numbers on the backs of the wild boars,” senior temple volunteer N Morgan said. More...

Amnesty accuses leaders of losing focus on human rights abuse...

Disaster is brewing and could lead to a humanitarian crisis of poverty, repression and unrest as human rights take a back seat to the global economic downturn, Amnesty International warns in its annual report.

In its annual report, released on Thursday, Amnesty International details human rights abuses from China to the United States and Sri Lanka to Russia and says the ongoing economic crisis is partly to blame for deteriorating rights.

"Underlying the economic crisis is an explosive human rights crisis. The economic downturn has aggravated abuses, distracted attention from them and created new problems," Amnesty chief Irene Khan said. "In other words: we are sitting on a powder keg of inequality, injustice and insecurity, and it is about to explode." More...

Suite...

For the first time last week, Sri Lanka’s Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse revealed the staggering level of casualties suffered by government soldiers in the last phase of the war against the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Speaking on the state-owned ITN television channel, Rajapakse acknowledged that 6,261 members of the security forces had died and another 29,551 had been injured since the government resumed the communal war in July 2006. Of the injured, 2,556 had been permanently disabled. More...

Saudi Arabia's religious police want to install surveillance cameras in shopping centres throughout the country in order to watch young people. "We will place surveillance cameras in all shopping centres and public places to monitor the behaviour of young people," said General Abdel Aziz al-Hamin, chief of the committee for the promotion of virtue and the prevention of vice, quoted by Saudi daily Okaz on Wednesday.

Another Chinese cat with wings...

Someone should tell the birds to look out - now cats are growing wings.

At least, this cat in the Chinese city of Chongqing in China appears to be.

Animal experts have been left baffled by the fluffy white moggy, who was born normal - but began growing wing-shaped appendages on either side of his spine when he was just a year old.

Some experts believe the bony 'wings' are in fact a freak mutation - a Siamese twin growing inside the kitty. More + pictures...

Could a teenage girl topple Berlusconi?

Italians are always scornful about the obsession of the "Anglo-Saxon" media with the private lives of the rich and famous, but for the past month the Italian newspapers have been preoccupied with one subject and one subject only: the relationship between Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and a young woman from Naples called Noemi Letizia.

Mr Berlusconi has been caught out telling numerous lies about the relationship and refuses to explain them. And with important elections pending, his popularity, at an all-time high only six weeks ago, may be eroding. More...

Woman who killed an official after rape threat becomes an internet heroine in China...

Until a few weeks ago, Deng Yujiao was an unknown 21-year-old worker in a Chinese provincial town: one of millions quietly scraping a living. Now she is an unwilling hero to tens of thousands of compatriots after stabbing to death an official who she says tried to rape her when she rejected his advances.

Comments on the killing have inundated blogs and bulletin boards. Deng's case – and its handling – has become emblematic of the struggle of ordinary people against abusive officials.

The message was spelled out in a protest at a Beijing university this week in which a gagged female student bound in sheets was shown surrounded by the words: "Anyone could become a Deng Yujiao." More...

Moroccan gay writer takes on the Muslim world...

A soft-spoken slip of a young man, Abdellah Taia hardly looks the part of an iconoclast. But as Morocco's first high-profile, openly gay man, Taia has made it his mission to win acceptance for homosexuals throughout the Muslim world.

Taia has defied Moroccan society's don't-ask, don't-tell attitude toward homosexuality - and prison sentences that are still on the books in the North African kingdom - to write five autobiographical novels about growing up poor and gay in the northern coastal city of Sale.

The novels, peppered with sexually explicit passages, have catapulted him to fame in his native country and made him the de-facto poster child of its budding gay rights movement. More...

Andrew Krasnow, the artist whose material is the human skin...

Some will find it shocking, macabre, echoing the worst allegations of Nazi atrocities. An American artist has spent the past 20 years making sculptures out of human skin, and is to exhibit his work in public in the UK for the first time later this year.

Welcome to the world of Andrew Krasnow, who has tackled one of the great taboos in art. Günther von Hagens may have caused controversy with his Body Worlds exhibition of human corpses, but Krasnow goes a step further.

His works include human skin lampshades – a direct response to the belief that similar items made from the skin of Holocaust victims were found at Buchenwald concentration camp. More...

NY man convicted for running "zoo from hell..."

A farm-animal breeder who ran what a prosecutor called "the zoo from hell" was convicted Tuesday of animal cruelty.

A jury in West Haverstraw deliberated less than two hours before convicting Robert Everle of all 13 charges of torturing, injuring and starving animals.

State police raided Everle's property, 30 miles north of New York City, in July, and witnesses testified that they found several animals dead, many malnourished and dozens living in unsanitary conditions. The animals included ducks, chickens, guinea hens, rabbits, sheep, dogs and cats. More...

Iran lifted its ban on Facebook on Tuesday, a few days after blocking the social networking site.

It was not immediately clear who filtered the site and who took the decision to allow access again.

The ban was widely covered by the international media. Domestic commentators claimed it was a government attempt to limit the ability of young supporters of Mir-Hossein Moussavi, leading presidential hopeful, to use the internet for campaigning ahead of the June 12 election. More...

Windows Vista SP2 is now available...

AFTER A FEW months of BETA testing, Microsoft has finally released the next official first aid kit for Windows Vista - Service Pack 2.

If you've been running the BETA of Service Pack 2 that was released last year, then you'll need to uninstall that before installing the official service pack. Plus, you'll also need to have Service Pack 1 installed first.

Although the Service Pack hasn't made it to Windows Update yet, you can now grab the official downloads from Microsoft's Download Center. The installer includes Service Pack 2 for both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, resulting in a 348.3MB file for 32-bit version - and a 577.4MB file for 64-bit version.

Despite the massive file size, however, there's not much to get excited about. The update mainly includes all of the bits and bobs that have been released since Service Pack 1, although this doesn't include Internet Explorer 8. More...

Suite...

"Jungle Laxmi," the Indian woman who lived in the wilds for 22 years, comes home...

In the hospital ward in the western suburbs where Laxmi Baraskar is being treated, the staff call her "Jungle Laxmi" — an apt moniker for the wiry woman who spent the last two decades in the jungle near Guhagar taluka in Ratnagiri.

Laxmi left her home in Katale village 22 years ago to ‘‘settle down’’ in the wild, about an hour’s walk from her old home. What prompted her decision was a beating by her husband and his relatives. The underlying reason — schizophrenia, a serious mental disorder — was not diagnosed until last fortnight, when her son brought her to Mumbai. More...

Why all the fuss about N.Korea's nukes when it's the US that paid for them?

Amidst the cacophony of condemnation from all sides following North Korea’s second nuclear bomb test, there has been no mention whatsoever of how the secretive Stalinist state got its weapons in the first place - they were paid for by the U.S. government.

Both the Clinton and Bush administrations played a key role in helping Kim Jong-Il develop North Korea’s nuclear prowess from the mid 1990’s onwards.

The hypocrisy being spewed forth from all sides in reaction to today’s news that North Korea tested an underground nuclear device equivalent to 10 times the power of their first test in October 2006 is akin to when the U.S. cited Iraq’s possession of chemical and biological weapons as a reason to invade in 2003, having first checked the receipt of course, since it was Donald Rumsfeld who brokered the deal to supply Saddam with those weapons in the first place. Tamil ethnic cleansing in Sri Lanka?

The Sri Lankan government has been accused of launching a campaign of "ethnic cleansing" following its victory over the Tamil Tigers in the country's 26 year civil war.

Aid officials, human rights campaigners and politicians claim Tamils have been driven out of areas in the north-east of the country by killings and kidnappings carried out by pro-government militias.

They say the government has simultaneously encouraged members of the Sinhalese majority in the south to relocate to the vacated villages. More...

Cell-phones to be banned in French primary schools...

Mobile telephones are to be banned from French primary schools and operators must offer handsets that allow only text messages under new government measures to limit the health risk for children.

Companies will also be required to supply telephones that work only with head-sets in order to limit the danger to the brain from electromagnetic radiation, Roselyne Bachelot, the Health Minister, said.

The measures, which emerged from a six-week review of mobile phone and wi-fi radiation, have been attacked as inadequate by campaigners who accuse the state of playing down dangers from phones and transmitter masts. More...

With official advice not to travel without a ticket, gloomy economic news and warnings about potentially violent trouble–spots ringing in their ears, thousands of Manchester United supporters are staying at home to watch Wednesday's Champions League final on big screens.

Supporters' groups expect the numbers travelling speculatively to Rome in the hope of getting a ticket to be well down on the number that went to Barcelona to watch the 1999 final, the last comparable trip to continental Europe.

While going abroad to follow your team used to be the ultimate badge of honour among fans, supporters' groups and academics believe the expense of watching modern football combined with efforts to discourage ticketless fans from attending have caused a cultural shift. More...

Boy in Thailand banned from video games; commits suicide; govt. closes 72 web-sites...

Following the suicide of a 12-year-old boy on Thursday, Thailand's Criminal Court has ordered the closure of 72 websites.

The Bangkok Post reports that Pongsathorn Wattanabenjasopha leaped to his death from the sixth floor of his school building, after being banned from playing video games by his father.

Oddly enough, the 72 sites shuttered by the Thai government include both online game and gambling venues. The Post reports comments by a government official who said that game-addicted children were more likely to commit suicide: More...

Jehovah Witnesses preparing for the end of the world!!! Wait! It's not yet 2012...

It's the start of the Jehovah Witnesses' convention season, and this year they'll be preparing for the end of the world.

Starting Friday, the Witnesses will host 14 consecutive weeks of conventions at the Christian Convention Center on Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard.

This year's theme, "Keep on the Watch!" is designed to discuss world events and how they relate to the Bible's prophecy of the apocalypse.

While all conventions are open to the public, the Witnesses are specifically inviting the public to a discussion with the provocative title, "How to Survive the End of the World," which will be at 11 a.m. Sunday. More...

The "angelic face" that's embarrassing Berlusconi...

Italy's prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi faced new questions yesterday about his relationship with Noemi Letizia, 18, after claims that he flew the aspiring model to his Sardinian villa for New Year's Eve after seeing her modelling portfolio.

Berlusconi has previously said that he knows Letizia through her parents, who he has described as old friends.

But Letizia's former boyfriend, Gino Flaminio, 22, told La Repubblica newspaper yesterday that "Noemi's parents have nothing to do with this, the link was just with her". Letizia's father challenged his version of events as "gravely defamatory, because it attributes to Noemi things that have never been done, said or thought," and said he would take legal action.

Suite...

After British Airways, Qantas cuts down on first-class flights...

Australia's Qantas Airways has scrapped first class on some routes, as the global economic downturn grounds many travelers and makes others think twice about paying for a little in-flight luxury.

Qantas said it had temporarily taken first class off the San Francisco, Buenos Aires and Melbourne-Hong Kong-London routes, offering business, premium economy and economy classes only.

"As a result of the economic downturn Qantas, like many other international airlines, has experienced reduced demand in premium cabins," Rob Gurney, Qantas Commercial's executive manager, said in a statement. More...

Suite...
