(...)

Suite...

50-year-old Saudi divorces 8-year-old wife...

An 8-year-old Saudi girl has divorced her middle-aged husband after her father forced her to marry him last year in exchange for about $13,000, her lawyer said Thursday.

Saudi Arabia has come under increasing criticism at home and abroad for permitting child marriages. The United States, a close ally of the conservative Muslim kingdom, has called child marriage a "clear and unacceptable" violation of human rights.

The girl was allowed to divorce the 50-year-old man who she married in August after an out-of-court settlement had been reached in the case, said her lawyer, Abdulla al-Jeteli. The exact date of the divorce was not immediately known. More...

Miss California to campaign against gay marriage...

The reigning Miss California has gone to Washington to help launch a campaign opposing same-sex marriage.

Carrie Prejean told NBC's "Today" show Thursday that she'll be working with the National Organization for Marriage to "protect traditional marriages."

The 21-year-old says that marriage is "something that is very dear to my heart" and she's in Washington to help save it.

She says many people have thanked her for standing up for traditional marriage.

Prejean was named the first runner-up to Miss North Carolina in the Miss USA pageant April 19. Her response to celebrity blogger Perez Hilton's question about legalizing same-sex marriage may have cost her the title. Source + video...

Suite...

Swine flu: creating fear, panic and more State control and spending...

We have gone demented. Two Britons are or were (not very) ill from flu. "This could really explode," intones a reporter for BBC News. "London warned: it's here," cries the Evening Standard. Fear is said to be spreading "like a Mexican wave". It "could affect" three-quarters of a million Britons. It "could cost" three trillion dollars. The "danger", according to the radio, is that workers who are not ill will be "worried" (perhaps by the reporter) and fail to turn up at power stations and hospitals.

Billboards criticizing US aid to Israel taken down under pressure...

An Albuquerque-based billboard company pulled ten billboards today that had featured a political message. The contract between a local grassroots group, the Coalition to Stop $30 Billion to Israel, and Lamar Outdoor Advertising was supposed to be for eight weeks; the billboards were taken down after only three weeks.

Correspondence from Lamar indicated that the company had received complaints about the billboards’ message, which said: “Tell Congress: Stop Killing Children. No More Military Aid to Israel.”

(...)

On April 8th, the Coalition to Stop $30 Billion to Israel erected the billboards throughout the Albuquerque area in order to inform the public about the misuse of their tax dollars, denominated in human lives. The group was motivated by concern for the Palestinian people who had recently been subjected to a massive invasion of the Gaza Strip by the Israeli military. Over 1,400 Palestinians – mostly civilian, including three hundred children – were killed and over 5,000 were injured. In 2007 the Bush administration signed a Memorandum of Understanding that provides $30 billion of U.S. taxpayer dollars to Israel over a ten year period beginning in 2008. The majority of these dollars will be used to purchase American-made weapons. More...

'Barbarian' defies court over torture and murder of Jew in France...

A self-proclaimed Muslim barbarian shouted his contempt for his judges yesterday at the start of his trial for the torture and murder of a young Jewish man.

Youssouf Fofana, 28, who led a loose-knit gang of youths from an immigrant housing estate, swaggered into court and shouted “Allah will conquer” as the court began hearing a case into a killing that horrified France and the world Jewish community in 2006.

The 11-year-old Indian girl who said "No" to marriage...

When Rekha Kalinda was nearing age 12, her parents told her they were planning to marry her off. Rekha's response would reverberate all the way up to the president of India: "No."
Nearly half of all Indian females get married before turning the legal minimum age of 18. The requirement has been in place for more than three decades, but centuries of custom don't change overnight – and that's especially true in Bararola, a land carved up into small farm plots and crisscrossed by dirt paths that takes at least a day's journey to reach from Calcutta. But even here, some people are taking a stand. More...

Article complet...

Why I eat meat (and why you should too...)

I started writing about food because I was tired of vegetarians and vegans telling me I should stop eating meat all together as my carnivorous consumption was inhumane and contrary to humanities’ evolution as a species. I eat meat. I will continue to eat meat. And I think you should too.

One of my quickest responses to the vegetarian/vegan anti-meat rhetoric is that if we were all vegetarians, there would be no fertilizer and then eventually no plants. If we only consumed plants, all the farmland now used to raise livestock would have to be used to raise edible plants, which could mean no livestock and in turn, no fertilizer from that livestock. In the long term, this would mean no plants. Or plants only raised on artificially produced fertilizers, which would also mean polluted waters. More...

UN accuses Sri Lanka of shelling civilian 'safe zone'

The United Nations has accused the Sri Lankan army of shelling a civilian safe zone hours after the country's president announced it would stop all heavy artillery attacks.

Its top humanitarian official, John Holmes, who visited holding camps in the north of the island earlier this week, said he had received reliable reports of continued assault despite government assurances that it would stop.

His comments were backed by Western diplomatic sources in Colombo who confirmed reports of continuing shelling in the no-fire zone where an estimated 50,000 civilians are trapped. More...

Indonesian Health Minister hints that swine flu could be man-made...

As swine flu continues to take its toll, claims surface that the deadly four-part flu virus could have been created for "bio-terror attacks."

Speaking at a conference to reassure the public over hers government's response to the swine flu threat, Indonesian Heath Minister Siti Fadilah Supari said Tuesday that the controversial virus could have been man-made.

She declined to elaborate on her claim but she had previously accused Western governments of making and spreading viruses in the developing world to boost pharmaceutical companies' profits, AFP reported.

"I'm not sure whether the virus was genetically engineered but it's a possibility," Supari said. More...

A sense of foreboding in Islamabad as the Taliban get nearer...

Every spring, the Margalla Hills overlooking this capital city burst into life. Evening thunderstorms send torrents of water down the slopes, scenic paths attract hikers and picnickers, and bands of monkeys scramble down from the trees to watch the weekend visitors.

But this season, the forested ridges have taken on a new, ominous significance for jittery residents. Suddenly, the hills are being depicted as the last barrier to hordes of Islamist insurgents sweeping south from the Afghan border and as perfect places for suicide bombers to lurk.

"If the Taliban continue to move at this pace, they will soon be knocking at the doors of Islamabad. The Margalla Hills seem to be the only hurdle in their march toward the federal capital," Maulana Fazlur Rehman, a religious party leader, warned last week in a speech to Parliament. He was exaggerating for effect, but the image struck home. More...

  5. What is it that Indians have that we don't?

We must be gullible to keep listening to these scares...

Five years ago, I was wondering how our Indian summer of prosperity would end.

We had been basking in the long Edwardian glow of low prices, cheap labour, domestic servants, prosperity and growth. It didn't actually occur to any of us at the time that a credit crunch would do the trick; a collapse of confidence in our debt-repaying abilities. That was beyond imagining. No, it was going to be something more obvious.

War was the most likely, if you listened to those who relied on historical cycles. In 1714 the western world had fought itself to a standstill. Add in 1814 and 1914, and there were the grounds for a Nostradamus-style paranoia. What would be our equivalent of World War One? More...

Afghan schoolgirls hit by airborne poison attack...

Five Afghan teachers and 40 of their pupils, most of them girls, have been admitted to hospital with severe headaches after a suspected airborne poison attack, the Public Health Ministry said on Monday.

They fell ill on Sunday afternoon during a ceremony at a school in the Sadiqi district of Parwan province, some 70 km (40 miles) north of the Afghan capital, Kabul.

"Among them there are 5 adults and 40 children, most of them girls, who have been affected," Dr Abdullah Fahim, spokesman for the Public Health Ministry said.

"For the time being, it seems to be airborne poisoning. But it's not confirmed yet what the actual reason is," Fahim said. More...

Is swine flu a biological weapon?

There are some factors that suggest the swine flu killing people in Mexico may be a biological weapon, but obviously no such conclusion can be drawn at this time. The World Health Organization and the U.S. government have been quick to deny such claims.

The swine flu virus is described as a completely new strain, an intercontinental mixture of human, avian and swine viruses. Tellingly, there have been no reported A-H1N1 infections of pigs.

According to a source known to former NSA official Wayne Madsen, “A top scientist for the United Nations, who has examined the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in Africa, as well as HIV/AIDS victims, concluded that H1N1 possesses certain transmission “vectors” that suggest that the new flu strain has been genetically-manufactured as a military biological warfare weapon.

Suite...

New virus is NOT swine flu, says Paris health organisation...

The virus currently circulating in Mexico and the United States and which has killed at least 20 people is not swine flu, the Paris-based World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) said Monday.

"The virus has not been isolated in animals to date. Therefore, it is not justified to name this disease swine flu," the OIE said in a press statement.

The virus "includes in its characteristics swine, avian and human virus components," the OIE said, and urged that it be called "North American influenza," after its geographic origin.

The OIE said it was "urgent" that scientific research be carried out to determine the susceptibility of animals to what it said was a "new virus."

If animals were susceptible, "virus circulation could worsen the regional and global situation for public health," the organization said.

The priest in Italy who parades his swastika arm-band...

A priest has shocked parishioners by welcoming them to church wearing a swastika armband.

Fascist Father Angelo Idi, 51 - who once saw off a charity box thief with a truncheon at his church in Vigevano, Italy - confessed: "I am proud of my right wing beliefs. But people shouldn't care about my politics, they should care about how good a priest I am."

In northern Italy where former dictator Benito Mussolini comes from the far right Italian LEGA NORD (Northern League) have their political stronghold - and there have been several instances of priests with far right views that have embarrassed the Catholic Church. More...

Doctor in India chops off wife's and her suspected lover's hands...

The Punjab Police Monday arrested three people, including a registered medical practitioner (RMP), after he chopped off the hands of his newly wedded wife and her cousin brother on the suspicion that they were having an affair in this border-area town of Punjab.
Gursahib Singh was arrested by the police along with his two other relatives after all three first chopped off a hand of his wife’s cousin Manpreet Singh and later did the same to Gursahib Singh’s wife Kulbir Kaur.

A big knife was used to chop off the hands. The trio then put the chopped limbs in a gunny bag and dumped them in a garbage bin here. More...

Girl in India beheaded for a good harvest! WTF!

A 10-year-old girl in an Orissa village was beheaded by her grandfather, who believed that sowing seeds mixed with her blood would yield a bumper crop, police said on Monday.

The barbaric incident, spurred by age-old superstitions, took place on Sunday at the tribal-populated Adapathar village in Sambalpur district, over 450 km from Bhubaneshwar. The heinous crime came to light after villagers caught the man, Rajesh Hembram, and handed him over to the police. More...

No one really cares, but Sri Lanka cannot be ignored...

(...)

It is a scene out of Dante's Inferno. Heroic doctors short of supplies tend to hundreds of shell-shocked wounded, who lie on the ground in open air "hospitals," often caked in dirt and soaked in blood. Parents wail and children wander around dazed. The lucky ones receive emergency care, though sometimes this has meant amputations without anaesthetics. Victims have described shells or rocket propelled grenades landing while they slept.

(...)

The UN estimates that since January more than 6,400 civilians have died and almost 15,000 have been injured. But the figure could be much higher, as the government has refused to allow independent observers into the area "for their own safety." In a rare statement, the director of operations for the International Committee of the Red Cross said last week that he could not recall a situation in recent years as painful and extreme.

You might have expected that governments around the world would have done all they could to alleviate so much pain and suffering. Not a bit of it. The UN security council has done virtually nothing. With their veto power, China and Russia have blocked any concerted council action or pressure. Instead of acting, council members have spent a great deal of time wrangling over whether to hold private briefings on Sri Lanka in the UN's basement – which would make the meeting unofficial – or in regular council rooms. Voters in India give the State the middle finger!!!

THIS TIME round, show them the middle finger. You may have reason to, as a seasoned voter who’s seen very little change on the ground after the heady speeches, promises, eye candy and campaigning dust fly in your face every five years.

The Election Commission is ensuring your message goes out loud and clear — they are giving your index finger a go-by, and painting your middle finger with indelible ink instead. A Commission official said the change was necessitated by the recently-concluded elections to local bodies in some parts of the country. “Since these voters will still have their index fingers marked, we decided to uniformly mark the middle finger of the left hand,” he said.

Not everyone’s amused, though. In many places, politicians and celebrities smiled and posed for the cameras after casting their vote, but realisation dawned much later. A Pune-based Bollywood celebrity said, “I did not realise it when I posed for the cameras. But when I saw the photo, my pose appeared to be in poor taste.”

In 2005, Australian Greg Chappell, former coach of the Indian cricket team, had triggered a furore when he showed the finger to Sourav Ganguly’s fans at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

All that may be in the past. Pictures of many celebrities and politicians, including Maharashtra CM Ashok Chavan and Union power minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and their wives showing middle fingers were splashed across newspapers.
