Tunisians jailed for posting 'Naked Muhammad' cartoons...

Officials in Tunisia say two bloggers have been jailed for seven years after posting cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad on thlle internet.

The Ministry of Justice said the men had put naked caricatures of the prophet on their Facebook accounts.

Activists have criticised the sentences and voiced fears that they could herald a clampdown on free speech.

A moderate Islamist government was elected following the fall of President Zine Abidine Ben Ali last year.

One of the men, Jabeur Mejri, is in jail while the second, Ghazi Beji, was sentenced in his absence and is being sought by the police. Full story...

Teachers facing abuse on the internet...

Teachers are facing death threats, abuse and allegations of serious crimes by pupils and parents through social networking sites, a poll suggests.

Online abuse of teachers is widespread, with more than two-fifths (42%) of those questioned saying they had been a victim of it, a survey by the NASUWT teaching union has found.

Of those, more than three-fifths (61.2%) said a pupil had written an insulting comment about them on a social networking or internet site, while more than a third (38.1%) said a student had made comments about their competence or performance as a teacher. And nearly one in 10 (9.1%) said they had faced allegations that they behaved inappropriately with pupils.

One teacher told the survey that a student had posted that they were going to "slit my throat", while a second said a pupil had written "my English teacher should actually die" and a third said a student had posted that a teacher "is a rapist". Full story...

Mey Sichan's employers telephoned for an ambulance on March 31 but paramedics found her dead on arrival, Mr Nasir Salleh, police chief of the northern state of Penang, told AFP. She also had bruises to her body.

A post-mortem revealed that she died from acute gastritis and ulcers likely due to lack of food over a long period, he said. The maid had been working for the family, who manage a hardware shop, for eight months.

Five people in southern China have been charged with intentional injury in the case of a Chinese teenager who sold a kidney so he could buy an iPhone and an iPad, the government-run Xinhua News Agency said on Friday.

The five included a surgeon who removed a kidney from a 17-year-old boy in April last year. The boy, identified only by his surname Wang, now suffers from renal deficiency, Xinhua quoted prosecutors in Chenzhou city, Hunan province as saying.

According to the Xinhua account, one of the defendants received about 220,000 yuan (about $35,000) to arrange the transplant. He paid Wang 22,000 yuan and split the rest with the surgeon, the three other defendants and other medical staff. Full story...

Three Cups of Tea author must pay $1m after he scammed charity...

The author of Three Cups of Tea has agreed to repay $1m (£631,000) to his charity after an inquiry found he mis-spent its money.

Greg Mortenson will no longer be the executive director of the Central Asia Institute (CAI), but will still draw a salary from the organisation.

Officials investigated the charity last year after claims that parts of the book were fabricated.

No criminality was found but the report recommended more oversight for the CAI. Full story...

A former employee of the Arab satellite network Al-Jazeera says the news channel fabricates stories on the unrest in Syria.

"The facts are totally different with the reports in the media (Al Jazeera), extremely different," Reuters quoted Moussa Ahmed, a former producer for Al-Jazeera's Beirut Bureau, as saying on Wednesday.

Ahmed said the channel concealed many facts, with editors' opinions becoming the so-called facts, adding, “I'm so sorry that we concealed facts for so long a time.” Full story...

Yale announced a year ago that it was creating the “first new college to bear the Yale name in 300 years” at the National University of Singapore, and last week, after reviewing 2,500 applications, it sent out the first handful of faculty job offers for Yale-N.U.S. College.

So it is distinctly awkward timing that members of the Yale College faculty, which never voted on the plan, are now raising concerns about joining their storied institution with an autocratic city-state where drug offenses can bring the death penalty, homosexual relations are illegal and criminal defamation charges are aggressively pursued.

On campus, there is a whiff of a Yale Spring, a slow awakening — at a university with no faculty senate — to faculty discontent. Many Yale professors are unhappy about the absence of a vote on the Singapore project, while some go further and attack it as a dangerous collaboration with a government that does not support the broad freedoms they believe are central to liberal arts education. The girl’s screams were brittle and desperate. Neighbors in the suburban housing complex looked up and saw a child crying for help from an upstairs balcony. She was 13 and worked as a maid for a couple who had gone on vacation to Thailand. They had left her locked inside their apartment.

After a firefighter rescued her, the girl described a life akin to slavery, child welfare officials said. Her uncle had sold her to a job placement agency, which sold her to the couple, both doctors. The girl was paid nothing. She said the couple barely fed her and beat her if her work did not meet expectations. She said they used closed-circuit cameras to make certain she did not take extra food.

In India, reported to have more child laborers than any other country in the world, child labor and trafficking are often considered symptoms of poverty: desperately poor families sell their children for work, and some end up as prostitutes or manual laborers. Full story...

Singapore dance troupe denied permit to perform in Malaysia because of "indecent" costumes...

Malaysia has denied a permit for a Singapore dance troupe to perform The Nutcracker and other ballet works due to concerns about "indecent" costumes, media in both countries reported.

"Ballet Illuminations" was supposed to run for three shows this weekend but the Singapore Dance Theatre was told by the venue that an agency of the Information, Communication and Culture Ministry withheld permission without explanation.

That came as a shock to the dance troupe, which has staged ballets in neighboring Malaysia - with similar classical tutus and tights - for the last two years without any problems.

Bilqis Hijjas, president of the MyDance Alliance in Kuala Lumpur, said the decision was "deplorable" and would damage Malaysia's reputation as a host for arts events. Full story...

Baby girl lies unwanted as two families battle over a new-born boy...

In the nursery for new-borns at Jodhpur's Umaid Hospital lies a baby girl who is seven days old. Her biological mother, who is in the women's general ward does not see her, or feed her. She remains un-named. She was born a healthy baby. Her shortcoming is that she is not a boy.

When Poonam Kanwar delivered her child at Jodhpur's Umaid Hospital, mid-wives reportedly eager for a tip said, she had given birth to a son. They brought her a baby boy to hold in her arms, and collected their reward. Then the news was broken two hours later to Poonam and her family that the boy they had embraced was actually born to another woman in the same hospital. Now, Poonam says she wants a DNA test to confirm who the baby boy belongs to. That could take four weeks, say authorities. On the basis of a blood test, hospital authorities claim Poonam is the baby girl's mother.

Poonam already has a son. Like Reshma Devi, the boy's biological mother, she comes from a rather modest family of farmers in Barmer district. Reshma Devi has already left the hospital with her son and is taking full care of him. Full story...

At the end of a 12-day visit to India, the U.N. Special Rapporteur on summary or arbitary executions said his mission was to investigate the right to life in the context of force by Indian police and security forces as well as due to cultural practices against women.

"This is a difficult area for any state to address," Christof Heyns told a news conference on Friday, adding that ensuring "certainty of conviction and some form of consequence" was more important than increasing punishment. Full story...

Egyptian family dumps daughter in the Nile for divorcing elderly husband...

An Egyptian man and other members of his family tied his daughter up and dumped her in the Nile after she was divorced from her ageing husband.

But she was rescued in the last minute by fishermen.

The girl had first refused to marry that man but then yielded to family pressure and wedded him, newspapers said in a report from Cairo.

A few months later, her life turned into a hell because of persistent disputes and maltreatment by her husband, they said.

As a result, the woman was divorced and she returned to her family, who decided to pressure her again to return to her bus band.

When she refused, they tied her up and dumped her in the Nile. But she was rescued in the last moment by fishermen who happened to be in the area.

According to research published today, Britain could lose some 319,000 future businesswomen, lawyers and doctors, as well as more than 60 women MPs by 2050 unless young women can be helped to retain confidence in their own abilities.

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe is in Singapore on a private visit to arrange post-graduate studies for his daughter, state media reported Sunday.

"President Mugabe left the country yesterday (Saturday) evening on a private visit to Singapore," the state-owned Sunday Mail newspaper said.

The paper said that Mugabe would oversee arrangements for his daughter Bona to begin post-graduate work, after she received her accounting degree last year.

Mugabe, 88, who has ruled Zimbabwe since independence from Britain in 1980, visited Singapore several times last year. His spokesman said the president had gone for cataract surgery amid repeated media reports that he was suffering from cancer. Full story...

I got calls from Utah, many letters from California, New Mexico, Arizona. ‘Hey, if you need help with money for your defense, here’s my phone number, call me.’ It was just unbelievable.”
