Thailand lese majeste man jailed for 20 years...

A man who sent text messages deemed insulting to Thailand's monarchy has been jailed for 20 years.

Ampon Tangnoppakul, 61, was convicted of sending four messages last year to an official working for then Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

He was charged under the Computer Crimes Act and lese majeste law, which is designed to protect the monarchy.

Critics say both laws have been increasingly politicised and are curbing free speech in Thailand.

Ampon was not in court to hear the sentence delivered because recent floods, which have caused widespread disruption in Thailand, stopped him from travelling from his remand prison. Full story...

Afghan woman's choice: 12 years in jail or marry her rapist and risk death...

The ordeal of Gulnaz did not simply begin and end with the physical attack of her rape. The rape began a years-long nightmare of further pain, culminating in an awful choice she must now make.

Even two years later, Gulnaz remembers the smell and state of her rapist's clothes when he came into the house when her mother left for a brief visit to the hospital.

"He had filthy clothes on as he does metal and construction work. When my mother went out, he came into my house and he closed doors and windows. I started screaming, but he shut me up by putting his hands on my mouth," she said.

The rapist was her cousin's husband.

After the attack, she hid what happened as long as she could. But soon she began vomiting in the mornings and showing signs of pregnancy. It was her attacker's child.

US school principal jailed for 30 years for filming boys using toilet...

A federal judge has sentenced a former Iowa elementary school principal to 30 years in prison for secretly videotaping dozens of young male students using the bathroom.

U.S. District Judge Linda Reade said the actions of former Sageville Elementary School principal Robert Burke were a shocking abuse of trust, and among the worst crimes against children she'd seen.

She added that Burke was a danger to the community, who betrayed children, their parents and a society that puts great trust in school administrators.

She said he deserved the maximum prison term after pleading guilty to producing child pornography in August.

The court heard how Burke, 43, hid a small video camera near a bathroom sink of the Iowa school, or on his own belt, on 12 occasions between January and June. Full story...

Malaysian govt plans to ban street protests...

Malaysia’s ruling party, National Front, has announced that it is to introduce a new legislation act, known as the peaceful assembly bill. The legislation will prohibit demonstrators in Malaysia from taking protests to the street.

The legislation, which parliament is likely to approve next month, has been criticised by opposing parties for effectively rejecting many of the reforms demanded by opposition and human rights groups to make Malaysia a freer society to live in.

The planned law, proposed by Najib’s National Front, will remove the requirement of demonstrators to gain a police permit. Demonstrators will now, however, be required to give authorities 30 days notice prior to demonstrations and police will hold the power to impose various restrictions on them, or can even reject proposed times and places for them entirely.

The amendment also states that protesters are not to take to the streets, resulting in them being confined to stadiums or public halls. Full story...

Pakistan shelves "obscene" text message ban after outcry...

Pakistan rowed back on Tuesday from demands that text messages containing nearly 1,700 "obscene" words should be blocked, following outrage from users and campaigners.

On November 14, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) distributed a list of 1,695 words in English and Urdu, the national language, to operators, giving them seven days to implement a filtering system.

But the list was met with uproar, both at the attempt to censor messages and the inclusion of many seemingly innocuous terms, among them "Jesus Christ", "lotion", "athlete s foot", "robber", "idiot", "four twenty" and "harder".

On Tuesday, PTA spokesman Mohammad Younis Khan told AFP the authority would consult civil society representatives and mobile phone operators on refining a much shorter list of words, giving no timeframe for any eventual ban.

"At the moment we are not blocking or filtering any word," Khan said. "No final decision has been taken in this regard," he added. Full story...

It’s hardly a satisfying end for the international “poster child for child clergy sex abuse,” as Vatican watcher Peter Borre called Law yesterday.

Law was never indicted. He was never tried. He never had to explain why in the world he wrote glowing letters of recommendation for priests accused of molesting hundreds of children, as he did for Father John Geoghan and Father Paul Shanley.

News flashes yesterday all referred to him as the “disgraced” cardinal. But that disgrace brought him a promotion, not punishment from the Vatican for aiding and abetting such crimes.

Ask anyone who's studied copyright policy – scholars of music and literature, economists, sociologists, law professors – and they'll tell you that the No 1 problem with copyright is that it is enacted without recourse to evidence.

Professor Ian Hargreaves, the latest eminent scholar commissioned by government to review Britain's copyright policy, lamented that his advice echoed many of his predecessors', none of which had been heeded.

Policymakers are unabashed about the lack of evidence in copyright policy — the EC's 2011 Single Market for Intellectual Property Rights report declares "The case does not need to be made anymore: IPR in their different forms and shapes are key assets of the EU economy." Of course, "the case does not need to be made" is another way of saying, "the case has not been made".

Writing in the Guardian, Ben Goldacre has examined the most-cited statistics about piracy, job creation and GDP contributions in the so-called creative industries and found them so singularly lacking that he declared: "As far as I'm concerned, everything from this industry is false, until proven otherwise." Anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare wants alcoholics to be publicly flogged!

India's popular anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare was criticised by mainstream political parties on Tuesday for saying he supported the public flogging of alcoholics.

Hazare, whose hunger strike in August against corruption attracted massive nationwide support, told the NDTV news channel that corporal punishment had previously been used in his home village in Maharashtra state.

"We give three warnings because after all they are our people," he said. "But after the warnings, we drag that person to the temple and make him promise that he will never drink again in his life.

Florida school calls cops because two 12-year-olds ... kissed???

A SCHOOL administrator in Florida called the sheriff after a pair of consenting 12-year-olds shared a kiss on the playground.

Lee County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to Orange River Elementary School in Fort Myers, Florida, after two female students were debating over who liked a 12-year-old boy more. At that point, one of the girls walked over and kissed the boy -- leading an assistant principal to call authorities.

The administrator initially contacted the Florida Deptartment of Children and Families (DCF). However, DCF told the school that it should call local law enforcement.

"They called us and said they caught two children kissing on the playground," Sargeant Stephanie Eller told FOX News Radio. Full story...

Top Swiss court rules against schooling via webcam...

Swiss parents are not allowed to school their children at home via webcam. The Federal Supreme Court ruled that children’s social skills were not sufficiently nurtured by such an arrangement.

The court was ruling on a case involving parents living in the Zurich canton who had organized to have their four children educated by distance learning from Germany.

20 million children in China living without their parents...

One sad side effect of China's economic miracle: 23 million children under the age of five now live apart from both their parents, who have left home to find work in the country's cities, according to a newly released statistic.

In scenes reminiscent of wartime Britain, villages across China's countryside have emptied of all working-age adults, leaving only the elderly and young behind.

For three decades, Chinese workers have been migrating from the countryside to the cities in search of work. In the beginning, only the men left, their wives remaining to look after the family. But as the world demanded more and more Made-in-China goods, the women began to join them.

Now, a third of all kindergarten-age children in China have been left behind by both parents, often in the care of their grandparents or other relatives, according to Deng Li, an official at the All China Women's Federation, a government-run campaign group. Full story...

Looking at nude images boosts the brain!!!

ADMIRING 'naked lovelies' can speed up your mental reactions, scientists say.

The scientists discovered that looking at pics of the likes of Lacey, Keeley and Rhian makes the brain react quicker. They experimented by showing men and women photos of naked and clothed models.

At the same time, the participants' electrical brain activity was monitored. And their results showed that it takes less than 0.2 seconds to process the image of a naked body — much less than when models are fully clothed or wearing swimsuits.

North Korea opens up to cell-phones...

Secretive North Korea is expected to register the 1 millionth cellphone user on its new 3G network by the end of the year, barely four years after people were thrown into prison camps, or possibly even executed, for owning one.

Most of the users are in the capital of Pyongyang, home to the impoverished country's elite and powerful who have the cash to splash out for a device and the calling fees.

"There has been an astronomical increase since even two years ago," said Michael Hay, a lawyer and business consultant based in the capital for the past seven years.

Two years ago, there were fewer than 70,000 users.

Ai Weiwei supporters go naked as artist faces 'porn' investigation...

When artist Ai Weiwei disappeared, supporters made online appeals for his return. When authorities handed him a £1.5m tax bill, they sent money to help pay it. And now that he faces an investigation for spreading pornography – his admirers have stripped off.

Internet users began tweeting their nude photographs after Ai announced that authorities had questioned his cameraman over pictures which showed the artist and four women naked.

Many Chinese contemporary artists have taken pictures of themselves without clothes, and the pictures of Ai that have emerged so far do not appear sexually charged. Some suspect that it may be an attempt by the authorities to smear the artist, whose 81-day detention this spring caused international outrage.

Hospitals 'clueless' about drug side effects...

Despite tens of thousands of patients coming down with diseases caused by medications they're taking, awareness of the problem remains low at Sweden's emergency hospitals, according to a recent report.

In a survey sent to 50 emergency hospitals across Sweden by Sveriges Radio (SR) investigative news programme Kaliber, only four of the 40 that answered were aware of how common the problem was among their patients.

"The absolutely first thing that needs to be done is to raise awareness about drug-related problems. It's imperative that both doctors, staff and politicians in the health care sector understand the size of this problem," said Jessica Fryckstedt, chief physician at Karolinska University Hospital (Karolinska sjukhuset) in Stockholm, to SR.

When 13-year-old Sameem Ali was offered a reward for doing household chores — a holiday with her extended family on the other side of the world — she was overjoyed.

Still a child, Sameem imagined sandcastles and a beach to play on. The reality was very different. When she travelled from her family home in Moss Side, an inner-city suburb of Greater Manchester, she found herself in a small Pakistani village with no electricity and no running water.

It was then that her mother told her she was there to marry a man twice her age whom she had seen only once at a family get-together in Pakistan.

‘At first, I thought she was joking,’ says Sameem, who is now in her late 20s. ‘Then I thought, “I’m only 13, I can’t get married”.’

Israeli women pose nude in support of Egypt's naked blogger, Aliaa Magda Elmahdy...

Dozens of Israeli women have posed naked in support of Aliaa Magda Elmahdy, the Egyptian blogger who sparked fury in the Arab world last week when she published a series of nude pictures of herself on Twitter under her real name in a protest against Islamic extremism.

As an act of solidarity with the 20-year-old activist, whose pictures caused a stir on Twitter under the hash tag #Nudephotorevolutionary, some 40 Israeli women stripped off their clothes for a nude group shot.

Inspired by Elmahdy, Or Tepler, 28, opened a Facebook event inviting women "to show support in a non-violent and legitimate way for a woman who is just like us - young, ambitious, full of dreams and evidently has a developed sense of humour".

Encouraging fellow Israelis, she wrote on Facebook: "Girls, let's give the world a good reason to see the unique beauty of Israeli women." The women responded in solidarity: "Regardless of whether they are Jewish, Arab, straight or lesbian - because here, as of now, it doesn't matter. Let us show the doubters that our international discourse doesn't depend on governments." Full story...

Voyeur gynaecologist in Germany sued for intimate photos of 3000 women!!!

Hundreds of former patients have pressed charges against a German gynaecologist for allegedly taking secret photos of their private parts. Investigators believe the doctor may have violated the trust of 3,000 women.

Around 800 women photographed in the doctor’s practice in the small town of Schifferstadt in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate had now been identified, local state prosecutor Lothar Liebig said, but he added that the investigations would take considerable time, because of the sheer number of photographs.

Over 700 of the women identified so far have now pressed charges. “Only a very small proportion did not want to do this,” Liebig said Monday. Many former patients of the gynaecologist also approached authorities independently.

Investigators discovered more than 35,000 photos of women’s private parts among the doctor’s files. He is now being prosecuted on a charge of “invading the highly personal area of life with photos.”

TSA says airport scanners are safe as Europe bans them for health safety reasons...

The European Union has decided to ban all X-ray scanners from EU airports in order to protect the health and safety of EU citizens, yet the TSA still claims that the scanners are completely safe. The ban comes after the recent media outburst regarding the 1998 report that linked the X-ray scanners to cancer. The report found that the machines could be causing 100 cases of cancer per year conservatively.

It is quite clear that the TSA is clinging on to the X-ray scanners for dear life, while the EU is taking the appropriate steps in protecting the health of travelers. This is evidenced by how differently the two governing bodies responding to the X-ray scanner cancer issue.

The European Union, following the news that the scanners are causing a threat to public health, decided to address the threat by removing the scanners. The European Commission issued a press release on November 14th calling for members of the European Union to remove X-ray scanners from its airports to avoid risking “citizens’ health and safety.” The United States on the other hand, went back on a promise to launch an independent safety into the machines. Former tennis great Yannick Noah accused Spanish athletes of widespread doping in an interview published Saturday, adding the only way to level the playing field would be to allow everyone to use banned drugs.

The 1983 French Open champion told Le Monde newspaper that French athletes no longer had a chance against their Spanish opponents and said his homeland was wrong to impose such stringent testing on its athletes.

Military rulers pull Egypt revolution back to square one...

Several hundred Egyptians occupied Cairo's Tahrir Square on Sunday, following a night of deadly clashes that signalled the start of a violent countdown to the first polls since Hosni Mubarak's ouster.

Fresh clashes broke out on the outskirts of the square, as anti-riot police fired regular rounds of tear gas and dozens of protesters set up barricades on the edges of the plaza.

Protesters streamed into Tahrir on Sunday morning and two large marches were planned into the square, in scenes reminiscent of the 18 days of protests that toppled Mubarak last winter.

Overnight, clashes between protesters and police left two people dead and hundreds injured. Full story...

What drugs was your Thanksgiving turkey on?

So far, 2011 has not been a great year for turkey producers. In May, an article in Clinical Infectious Diseases reported that half of U.S. meat from major grocery chains--turkey, beef, chicken and pork--harbors antibiotic resistant staph germs commonly called MRSA. Turkey had twice and even three times the MRSA of all other meats, in another study.

In June, Pfizer announced it was ending arsenic-containing chicken feed which no one realized they were eating anyway, but its arsenic-containing Histostat, fed to turkeys, continues. Poultry growers use inorganic arsenic, a recognized carcinogen, for "growth promotion, feed efficiency and improved pigmentation," says the FDA. Yum.

And in August, Cargill Value Added Meats, the nation's third-largest turkey processor, recalled 36 million pounds of ground turkey because of a salmonella outbreak, linked to one death and 107 illnesses in 31 states. Even as it closed its Springdale, Arkansas plant, steam cleaned its machinery and added "two additional anti-bacterial washes" to its processing operations, 185,000 more pounds were recalled the next month from the same plant. Is a German 'Fourth Reich' emerging?

It may have been a bad idea to send a German. And his name certainly didn’t help matters.

When Horst Reichenbach arrived in Athens recently to head a new European Union task force to help the country deal with its debt, the Greek media instantly dubbed him “Third Reichenbach.”

Cartoons appeared of him in Nazi uniform. A Greek tabloid showed a photo of his office with the headline: “The new Gestapo headquarters.”

 The Greeks are not alone in harboring suspicions toward Germany, which occupied the country during World War II. The British conservative press is up in arms. The Daily Mail went so far as to accuse the Germans of attempting to use the euro crisis to “conquer Europe” and establish a “Fourth Reich.” Meanwhile in Poland, Germany’s supposed imperial ambitions became an issue in the recent elections. Swaziland king's disgraced 12th.wife kicked out of palace...

Swaziland's king Mswati III's 12th wife, who was last year caught in bed with the justice minister, said on Sunday she has been kicked out of the palace after pepper-spraying a security guard.

Nothando Dube, also known by the royal name inkhosikati LaDube, was ordered to "immediately leave the palace' by royal governor Timothy Mthethwa and other members of the royal family, according to reports.

LaDube, 23, who has been under house arrest since her scandalous affair with justice minister Ndumiso Mamba came to light, told the Sunday Times that she was thrown out after she tried to leave the palace to take her child to hospital. The two-year-old had injured herself while playing.

But a guard at the gate refused to let her out.

"He threatened to hit me, saying I am not going anywhere with my child, who was bleeding from a deep wound," she told the newspaper. Full story...

Pressure on the Syrian regime has increased after a 15-year-old schoolboy was murdered by government thugs.

Mohammed Mulla Eissa's only crime was refusing to join a pro-regime march when ordered to do so by militiamen who had come to his school.

The boy was apparently shot in front of his classmates; beaten with truncheons; and then killed after an officer ordered: 'Shoot him again to make sure he dies.'

Mohammed's death brought the total number of children killed in the Syrian uprising to 282. But this one has further galvanised the opposition to Bashar al-Assad's Baathist regime, due to the appallingly public nature of the killing, and video recordings of Mohammed with blood gushing from his chest. Britain's Climate Minister buys a castle with 16 bathrooms... and a massive carbon footprint!

Tell the government of India to stop burning the homes of the indigenous Meitei people...

The Government of India has unleashed a reign of state terror by burning down floating huts belonging to members of the Meitei people in Manipur who are indigenous fishermen living in the Loktak Wetlands in Central Manipur.

The Government of Manipur has been blaming the indigenous peoples dwelling in Loktak lake for polluting it and causing contamination. Local people, however, blame pollution on the Loktak Multipurpose Hydroelectric Project, which has caused devastation of the wetlands ecosystem.

Approximately 200 of the nearly 1400 floating huts have already been burned, and if the Indian government burns them all down, over 5000 indigenous peoples will be displaced and left without a home.

Each family was offered the equivalent of $900 US dollars by the government to allow them to burn down their huts, which is horribly inadequate to find new housing and relocate to another area. More + petition...

Basil D’Oliveira: far more than a cricketing hero...

There is a rare category of sportsman who comes to signify something very much greater and more profound than merely sport. One example is the immortal black American athlete Jesse Owens, whose string of gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics did so much to upset Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party.

Another who falls in that category is Basil D’Oliveira. Yet his secret was his sheer ordinariness. Though a very fine cricketer, he was modest, discreet, immaculately well mannered, and had no burning interest in politics. He never chose to become a hero and never sought to be a symbol of anything. But destiny singled him out to play the central role in the most important sporting controversy of modern times.

And when put to the ultimate test, he responded to unbelievable pressure with a quiet dignity that spoke volumes.

 Back in the 1960s, the majority of the British sporting public had never given so much as a passing thought to the terrible injustice of South African apartheid. But when they saw this quiet, unassuming man banned from playing the sport he loved just because of the colour of his skin, the British people gave their hearts to Basil D’Oliveira because they sensed that something was badly wrong.
