Wall Street not hot on $700bn bail-out...

Fears are mounting that many Wall Street banks and financial firms will refuse to participate in the US government's $700bn bail-out package, leaving global markets and world economies in a perilous state for months to come.

'There is a growing feeling that banks ... might instead decide to tough it out,' said Thomas Caldwell, chairman and CEO of Caldwell Financial, a $1bn-plus fund manager.

For the past two weeks all eyes in the market have been focused on US Congress and its attempts to pass Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson's bail-out package - a bill to allow the US government to buy up to $700bn of toxic mortgage-related assets from American banks, which would in theory free the credit markets and set the gears of global commerce spinning once more.

Last Monday, after the bill was thrown out by the House of Representatives, more than $1 trillion was wiped off the value of US stocks as the market was gripped by panic. The bill was passed on Friday afternoon, however, after the inclusion of $149bn of tax breaks and strict rules for participating banks. More...

The mother of all bank runs?

It's plain that the current financial crisis is worsening in spite of--or perhaps because of--the Treasury rescue plan.

The strains in financial markets are becoming more, rather than less, severe in spite of the nuclear option of a $700 billion package: Interbank spreads are widening and are at a level never seen before; credit spreads are widening to new peaks; short-term Treasury yields are going back to near-zero levels as there is flight to safety; credit default swap (CDS) spreads for financial institutions are rising to extreme levels as the ban on shorting of financial stock has moved the pressures on financial firms to the CDS market; and stock markets around the world have reacted very negatively to this rescue package. Another top European bank falters...

Another major European financial institution is teetering on the brink of collapse after a banking consortium withdrew from rescue talks.

Germany's second-largest mortgage lender, Hypo Real Estate, said a bail-out deal had fallen apart.

Correspondents say its failure will put further strain on financial institutions in other countries.

The news came as EU leaders at a Paris summit stopped short of offering a US-style rescue plan to banks.

Hypo Real Estate, which has large amounts of bad debt, has suffered from the credit squeeze in international markets.

The bank said a consortium of German financial institutions involved in a government-led rescue plan pulled out of the negotiations after refusing to come up with nearly 36bn euros ($50bn; £28bn) for a bail-out. More...

Do you like prawns? Then maybe you should read this...

Southern Vietnam is hot and sticky at any time, but the humid air inside the Huong family's hut, perched on a prawn-pond dyke in the Mekong Delta, is almost unbearable.

The single room is rank with chemicals: we cough and sneeze when we enter.

There's an acrid dust all over the mud floor, which makes you worry for little Huong Thi Mai, a seven-year-old girl who is sitting on the bed near the door watching her parents work.

(...)

Modernity, for Mr Huong, appears to be chiefly measured in chemicals. I count 13 different pots, jars and sacks of these in the hut, and he eagerly talks me through them.

He's particularly keen on a compound called 'Super Star' - the Vietnamese print on the label says it 'intensifies the metabolism to help prawns grow fat'. He learnt about this additive on a course run by the Vietnamese government at a local fishery training centre.

(...)

The label has familiar words from stock-cube packets: aspartic acid, glutamic acid and taurine, which is the key element of the energy drink Red Bull. Then there is Vitamix, 'to make prawns grow faster', Calphorax 'to help the shell thicken and give better colour' and Vin Superclear 'to kill pests, viruses and smells'. On top of all this is a seasoning of antibiotics. Full story...

The woman who uses her skin as a note-pad!!! Oh boy!

A Chengdu resident suffers from a condition that allows her to use her skin like writing paper.

According to 50-year-old Huang Xiangji, when she writes a word on her skin using a fingernail, the letters protrude from her skin a minute or two later.

"I used my body as a notebook for years," Huang said.

The woman said she had the strange ability even as a little girl and would list goods on her arms before going shopping.

On Wednesday, doctors told Huang that she had the condition called artificial urticaria, which has no ill affects.

The cause of Tree-man Dede Koswara's strange growths discovered?

For 20 years, the warts studding Dede Kosawa's hands and feet multiplied and sprouted like gnarled roots

His hands looked like contorted, yellow-brown branches extending 3 feet. Unable to clamp his hands into a fist or pick up a fork, he made his living by performing in carnivals in rural Indonesia. He became known as the Treeman.

"His life was taken away from him," said Dr. Anthony Gaspari, an American dermatologist who traveled twice to Indonesia to treat Kosawa. "He was severely disfigured and was sent into a rural isolated village where he was sheltered from his peers. With good reason, he was a sad man. He wanted to be cured and he wanted hope."

The growths encrusting his arms accounted for nearly 12 pounds of his 100-pound body. Kosawa, 36, often became exhausted after taking a few steps because of the dense warts on his feet. The growths that carpeted his limbs were posing more problems.

"He was getting infected," said Gaspari, chief of dermatology at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. "He had insects living in the base of the wood-like material." More...

Jewish 'modesty patrols' sow fear in Israel...

In Israel's ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, where the rule of law sometimes takes a back seat to the rule of God, zealots are on a campaign to stamp out behavior they consider unchaste. They hurl stones at women for such "sins" as wearing a red blouse, and attack stores selling devices that can access the Internet.

In recent weeks, self-styled "modesty patrols" have been accused of breaking into the apartment of a Jerusalem woman and beating her for allegedly consorting with men. They have torched a store that sells MP4 players, fearing devout Jews would use them to download pornography.

"These breaches of purity and modesty endanger our community," said 38-year-old Elchanan Blau, defending the bearded, black-robed zealots. "If it takes fire to get them to stop, then so be it."
Many ultra-Orthodox Jews are dismayed by the violence, but the enforcers often enjoy quiet approval from rabbis eager to protect their own reputations as guardians of the faith, community members say. And while some welcome anything that keeps secular culture out of their cloistered world, others feel terrorized, knowing that the mere perception of impropriety could ruin their lives. More...

What the world thinks of the United States...

Five years after the start of the war in Iraq, the image of the United States abroad remains far less positive than it was before the war and at the beginning of the century. However, the latest survey by the Pew Global Attitudes Project finds some encouraging signs for America's global image for the first time this decade.

Favorable views of the United States have increased modestly since 2007 in 10 of 21 countries where comparative data are available. Perhaps more importantly, the polling finds many people around the world paying close attention to the U.S. presidential election. Moreover -- except in countries that are extremely anti-American -- those who are paying attention generally believe the next president may well change U.S. foreign policy for the better. In nearly every country surveyed, greater numbers express confidence in presidential candidate Barack Obama than in John McCain.

However, the survey of more than 24,000 people in 24 countries, conducted March 17 to April 21, finds another change in global opinion that could present a formidable challenge to the United States in the future. Around the world, people have a new concern: slumping economic conditions. And they have a familiar complaint -- most think the U.S. is having a considerable influence on their economy, and it is largely seen as a negative one. More...

The plane was on the runway; the holidaymakers in good spirits.

And when the stewardess came down the aisle towards Jan Coupe and her husband, she thought the flight attendant was going to check their seatbelts.

Then came the moment Mrs Coupe wished the earth would open up and she could disappear.

For the stewardess had to tell the couple - who weighed 38st between them - that they were too heavy for the plane to take off.

As his wife cringed with embarrassment, 20st Alan Coupe moved to the front of the aircraft to help even out the weight.

While it was a scene they wouldn't have wished on their worst enemies, some good has come of it. More...

India, where it's not safe to be a Christian...

Over the past several months we have been outraged by the murderous violence directed against Christians in India. While calls for justice ring out from the international community, and the United States in particular, the response of the Indian government is apathetic at best.

Today, we are grieved to have received one more report:

Three more believers were martyred and twelve others were severely wounded in a fresh wave of violence in Orissa, India, on September 30. The latest attacks occurred in villages near Kandhamal, which has been the epicenter of violence against Christians since August 22.

The violence in Orissa came as attacks in two other Indian states targeted a Christian pastor and a GFA-related center for children.

An estimated 30 Christians have been killed and thousands of others have lost their homes since Hindu extremists went on a rampage after their leader, Swami Laxmananda Saraswati was murdered. His followers are seeking revenge for his death, for which Christians have been blamed. However, Maoists have claimed responsibility for the murder. More...

Tata abandons cheapest car plant...

India's Tata group has abandoned plans to build the world's cheapest car in the eastern state of West Bengal.

Tata group chief Ratan Tata said: "We have little choice but to move out of Bengal. We cannot run a factory with police around all the time."

He was speaking after protests in a row over land acquired from local farmers.

The car, the Nano, is expected to cost about 100,000 rupees ($2,130). It was due to be launched in October and will be ready "this year", Mr Tata said.

The BBC's Subir Bhuamik in Calcutta says the company is initially expected to produce several thousand Nanos this year at other sites in India.

It had planned to make 250,000 cars a year at the Singur plant in West Bengal, rising to 350,000.

A number of other car firms also plan vehicles to compete with the Nano but have not yet begun production.

The dispute in West Bengal highlights a wider problem between India's growing industry - which needs land - and its farmers who are unwilling to give it up. More...

Saudi cleric tells women to wear a one-eye veil!!!

A Muslim cleric in Saudi Arabia has called on women to wear a full veil, or niqab, that reveals only one eye.

Sheikh Muhammad al-Habadan said showing both eyes encouraged women to use eye make-up to look seductive.

The question of how much of her face a woman should cover is a controversial topic in many Muslim societies.

The niqab is more common in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, but women in much of the Muslim Middle East wear a headscarf which covers only their hair.

Sheikh Habadan, an ultra-conservative cleric who is said to have wide influence among religious Saudis, was answering questions on the Muslim satellite channel al-Majd.

Prostitutes become addicted to ... prostituition???

Never mind the drugs and booze that go hand-in-hand with the sex trade - prostitution itself is an addiction.

So says Lauren Casey, a Victoria, B.C., researcher, advocate and former prostitute.

(...)

Myths about the sex trade persist, she explained, because most research into the sex trade has been conducted solely on street prostitution, which represents only 10% to 20% of the industry. The rest is "inside," in escort agencies, massage parlours and on the Internet.

(...)

In fact, Casey said, only a "tiny minority" who get into it are already addicts. While drug addiction is rampant in the sex trade, most prostitutes develop drug addictions after they go into the business.

Her research found that, by far, most women go into it for the fast money, and it's that easy cash that becomes the most addictive part.

But often they turn to drugs as the business grinds them down emotionally and spiritually. Full story...

India bans smoking in public places...

A ban on smoking tobacco in public has come into force in India.

Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss says he aims to cut the number of smokers and to protect passive smokers from the harmful effects of tobacco.

The government says India has more than 120 million cigarette smokers. Observers say the ban will need to be strictly enforced.

Those flouting it face fines of 200 rupees ($4.50). Tobacco smoking in India kills 900,000 people a year.

That figure is expected to rise to a million by 2010.

India's health ministry says hundreds of thousands of people who have never smoked die each year by inhaling smoke from other people's cigarettes and bidis (small hand-rolled cigarettes common in India).

"From 2 October India is going to go smoke-free in all public places," Mr Ramadoss said.

"The aim is to discourage the smokers, to make them quit or reduce smoking. Also all non-smoking employees have a right to a 100% smoke-free atmosphere.

"The perils of passive smoking are equally bad." More...

World's fattest man, Manuel Uribe, to marry!!! Best wishes!

The world's most obese man is getting hitched.

Manuel Uribe says he will wed long-time girlfriend Claudia Solis on October 26 in Monterrey, Mexico. The two will be married in a civil ceremony at a location still to be decided.

Uribe is unable to walk, and leaving his house means being towed through the streets on his specially made bed.

This year the Guinness Book of World Records declared Uribe, who tipped the scales at 1,230 pounds (560 kilograms) in 2006, the world's heaviest man.

The 43-year-old has shed about 550 pounds (250 kilograms) since with the help of Solis. The two met four years ago.

Uribe said yesterday he will have a bite of wedding cake for photos - but he won't eat any more because his diet prohibits it.

Gas price mistake;people flock to pump: owner happy that people were happy! Cool!

A day after a run on a gas station where an attendant incorrectly set the pump price at only 35 cents a gallon, the owner was looking beyond the lost revenue.

A tribute to Singapore's J.B. Jeyaretnam. R.I.P.

A bad day for Wall Street, but a good day for Democracy...

What are we to make of the Congressional rejection of the Paulson proposal? The politics is simple: elections are a rare moment of accountability in our political process, and all 435 members of the House of Representatives are up for re-election in a matter of weeks. The Bush administration has lost the confidence of the American people, and so has Wall Street.

Those who created the problem are now the doctors offering the prescriptions. A little while ago we were told everything was fine. Then, less than six months ago, we were told that the economy was on the mend. Now we are told the patient needs a massive transfusion; but everyone can see that the patient is suffering from internal bleeding - in California, the number of foreclosures may already be outpacing voluntary sales. Yet nothing is being done to stem the haemorrhaging.

While the president says the economy faces the risk of economic meltdown, he threatens to veto a stimulus package that would create jobs - and he seems particularly adamant about a stimulus package that includes improved unemployment benefits. Traditionally, this is done when there is a threat of an economic downturn; if the downturn doesn't materialise, it doesn't cost anything. And while the administration and Wall Street promise this is just a temporary loan, not a bail-out, there was strong opposition to making the financial industry pay for any losses. Why would that be, if they are so sure that there won't be losses? More...
