Students fight prostituition in Ukraine...

A group of young women in Kiev has woven itself into the crowds along Khreshchatyk, the city's main boulevard. They're wearing pink pantyhose, miniskirts and high heels. They carry placards saying: "Ukrainian girls are not for sale." Nastia, a recent high school graduate, says: "Today, we're going on patrol."

Ukraine has become a favored destination for sex tourism, particularly from Western countries. So the women are keeping an eye out for foreigners. Nastia spots a fashionably dressed man, who turns out to be a Danish tourist. She approaches him and starts talking to him, while she presses a flyer into his hand. "Ukraine is no whorehouse" is the title of the flyer, which also warns that Ukraine has Europe's highest incidence of HIV/AIDS. And it accuses those who frequent prostitutes of ultimately supporting the mafia. More...

Pentagon hacker Gary McKinnon should be extradited, court rules...

There were emotional scenes outside the high court today after computer hacker Gary McKinnon lost a further attempt to avoid his extradition to America on charges of breaching US military and Nasa computers.

McKinnon, who has been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, would suffer from a "severe mental breakdown" if forced to serve up to 60 years in an American jail, his mother, Janis Sharp, said, pleading with politicians to intervene.

"Why aren't they stopping the extradition of a man who is clearly vulnerable and who on the accepted evidence suffers from Asperger's?" Sharp said. "Gary is clearly someone who is not equipped to deal with the American penal system and there is clear evidence that he will suffer a severe mental breakdown if extradited." More...

Bolivia bans all circus animals...

Bolivia has enacted what animal rights activists are calling the world's first ban on all animals in circuses.

A handful of other countries have banned the use of wild animals in circuses, but the Bolivian ban includes domestic animals as well.

The law, which states that the use of animals in circuses "constitutes an act of cruelty", took effect on 1 July with operators given a year to comply, according to the bill's sponsor, Ximena Flores.

The law was proposed after an undercover investigation by the nonprofit-making London-based group Animal Defenders International (ADI) found widespread abuse in circuses operating in Bolivia. More...

Debbie Purdy wins assisted suicide prosecution battle...

Britian's highest court issued a historic judgment today that could finally remove the fear of prosecution from people who travel abroad to support relatives seeking an assisted suicide.

In a unanimous ruling, the law lords ordered the director of public prosecutions to immediately draw up a policy that would spell out when prosecutions would and would not be pursued.

The ruling was strongly in favour of Debbie Purdy, 46, who has multiple sclerosis and who has been fighting to protect her husband should he accompany her to a clinic in Switzerland that specialises in euthanasia. She had argued that the law was unclear and uncertainty surrounding the issue breached her human rights. More...

Gaza children claim kite-flying world record...

Thousands of children in the Gaza Strip attempted to set a new world record Thursday by flying colorful homemade kites amid the ruins of Israel's offensive earlier this year.

The event, sponsored by the United Nations, brought some 6,000 campers in orange uniforms and blue caps to a beach in Gaza's war-torn north, where they released their kites into clear skies. Some included designs such as the red, green, black and white Palestinian flag.

"We are happy we came here, full of joy, full of life, said 11-year-old Marwan Mohammad. We hope that we can be free and can enjoy the same freedom these kites enjoy in the air. All we are looking for is to grow up like normal children." More...

Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysia's chameleon...

ONE evening in mid-July Anwar Ibrahim was deep in the rubber-tapping state of Kelantan in northern Malaysia, urging a crowd of rural folk to vote for a devout fishmonger. The candidate was from the conservative Islamic Party (PAS). A tiny by-election for the state assembly PAS already dominates is ordinarily small beer (or would be, if PAS allowed such a beverage, which it does not). But Mr Anwar needs PAS. For the paradox is that without the Islamists, the alliance he leads of Malay modernisers, Indians and secular Chinese has little chance of driving the ruling United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) from power. The coalition that UMNO dominates has ruled Malaysia since independence in 1957. Mr Anwar longs for UMNO’s destruction. The feeling is mutual. More...

A music publisher that has accused Australian band Men at Work of stealing the melody to their 1980s smash hit "Down Under" from a campfire song won the first stage of its lawsuit on Thursday seeking royalties from the Aussie anthem.

A federal judge ruled that publisher Larrikin Music owns the copyright to the tune of "Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree" - a Girl Guide favorite from New Zealand to Canada.

Suite...

Ten things you're not supposed to know about the swine flu vaccine...

Let's not beat around the bush on this issue: The swine flu vaccines now being prepared for mass injection into infants, children, teens and adults have never been tested and won't be tested before the injections begin. In Europe, where flu vaccines are typically tested on hundreds (or thousands) of people before being unleashed on the masses, the European Medicines Agency is allowing companies to skip the testing process entirely.

And yet, amazingly, people are lining up to take the vaccine, absent any safety testing whatsoever. When the National Institutes of Health in the U.S. announced a swine flu vaccine trial beginning in early August, it was inundated with phone calls and emails from people desperate to play the role of human guinea pigs. The power of fear to herd sheeple into vaccine injections is simply amazing. More...

Indian court convicts five more for Orissa anti-Christian violence...

An Indian court has sentenced another five persons to six years in prison for the second time in a month for their involvement in violence against Christians in Orissa a year ago.

The men were found guilty of setting houses on fire and engaging in unlawful assembly in their village, Salaguda, on September 13, 2008, when the riots were at their peak.

(...)

Anti-Christian violence broke out in Orissa after a Hindu fundamentalist leader, Laxmananda Saraswati, was murdered in August 2008. Hindus blamed Christians for killing Saraswati even though Maoist rebels publicly claimed responsibility.

Following the swami’s death, Hindu mobs attacked Christians, burning their homes, shops, churches and orphanages. More than 30,000 Christians from Orissa were forced to take shelter in refugee camps, where the living conditions were poor, or in the jungle, where they were in danger of being attacked by wild animals. Hospital errors in Australia cause 4550 deaths a year...

HOSPITAL errors claim the lives of 4550 Australians a year, equivalent to the death toll from 13 jumbo jets crashing and killing all on board, says a report to the Government which urges sweeping reforms of the health system.

China to reduce number of executions?

China is to reduce the number of executions it carries out every year to "an extremely small level", an official said yesterday as the country retained its position at the top of world execution lists.

Zhang Jun, vice-president of the Supreme People's Court (SPC), said the court would impose more suspended death sentences in the future.

The comment came as a human rights report showed that China was responsible for 87.3 per cent of executions carried out worldwide in 2008 and the first six months of this year. More...

Student files lawsuit after coach distributed private Facebook content...

A Mississippi high school student is suing her school district after a teacher logged into the student's social networking account and distributed information that embarrassed her and led to her removal from the team.

Through her parents, Mandi Jackson, a student at Pearl High School in Pearl, Miss., filed suit against the district on June 16 in the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of Mississippi, claming the incident violated her constitutional rights to free speech and privacy, among others.

On Sept. 10, 2007, Pearl High School cheerleading coach Tommie Hill required each member of the cheerleading squad to reveal the passwords to their Facebook accounts, according to the suit. More...

Italian nun finds naked photos of herself in Facebook!!!

An Italian nun had to sue her cunning ex-boyfriend after he posted her naked pictures on Facebook, and refused to remove them.

The 31-year-old nun, from Turin, Italy, said that she was devastated when she saw the pictures on the social networking site.

The photographs were taken in summer 2006, during a holiday in Sicily.

The man, who said that he wanted to stop her becoming a nun, has refused to remove the pictures despite the woman's requests.

And thus, the nun's lawyer Anna Orecchioni has taken the reins of the matter in her hand.

"My client doesn't want money, she only wants that he respects her decision to become a nun," the Daily Telegraph quoted her as saying.

Meanwhile, Italians are flocking the site in large numbers to see the pictures, leaving comments like: "If all the nuns are like that, I want to become a priest."

A Gaza man is being held on suspicion he bludgeoned his daughter with an iron chain, cracking her skull in a particularly brutal family "honor killing," two human rights groups said Wednesday, citing police and forensics reports.

The British Council is planning to outsource more than 100 jobs to India to cut costs.

It is planning to get rid of 500 British jobs and recruit local Indian workers to fill finance and IT posts as part of a huge cost-cutting drive.

It has infuriated unions who fear that other Government departments will follow suit.

School in Tamil Nadu, India, uses kids as props for stunt...

In a shocking incident, a government elementary school in Villupuram district recently organised an event that exposed school children to serious harm — in the name of celebrations to mark the birth centenary of the former Tamil Nadu chief minister K Kamaraj.

It was meant to be a ‘bravery show’ but it resulted in gross violation of children’s rights, virtually putting them at risk of incurring serious injury. The show began with students displaying their karate skills. Then came the main event — a motorcyclist riding over the outstretched hands of students from class I to V lying prone on the ground, and later the bike going over a plank placed over a girl. Father and two sons jailed for DVD piracy...

A father and two sons who used dozens of Chinese "slaves" to pull off Britain's biggest DVD piracy scam have been jailed.

The "sophisticated" operation, which made up to £7m, hid behind a "veneer of respectability" as it imported cutting edge equipment from the Far East.

The group provided a "one-stop-shop" service for major blockbuster movies and unregulated pornographic films.

When police raided a number of locations in East London in 2006, they found thousands of pirate DVDs of the latest movie releases - including Ice Age 2, The Da Vinci Code and Iron Man - and the equipment to make them.

It was the first time such an operation had been identified in Western Europe. More...

“The War is with the Arabs”

I saw this sign as I was entering Nablus last week, again on my way to Ramallah, and again near Bethlehem. The phrase is printed in Hebrew, presumably by Israeli settlers, on huge signs throughout the West Bank. Israeli racism rarely shocks me anymore, but its blatant display still makes me stop and catch my breath as I translate it into other contexts. Imagine driving through the middle of a predominantly black neighborhood in a US city or town and seeing a enormous sign that says, “The war is with the Blacks.” More...

British MPs ignore public anger and give themselves £9,000 expenses deal by stealth...

MPs have ignored public anger over the expenses system by quietly introducing new rules which allow them to claim up to £9,125 a year without producing any receipts.

The Daily Telegraph can disclose that MPs have devised a new scheme allowing them to claim a £25-a-night “subsistence” allowance when staying away from their designated main home.

The controversial payments for MPs have been approved despite widespread outrage at unjustified expense claims following the disclosures made by this newspaper. More...

When it comes to the movie industry, India is untouchable...

That the Indian film industry is the world’s largest in terms of number of films produced as well as the number of cinema-goers is perhaps known. But you really get an idea of its size when you discover that it produces almost as many films as the next three - the US, Japan and China - combined.

The Indian film industry, with its major centres at Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad, produced 1,132 feature films in 2007. In comparison, the American film industry in 2008 produced 520 feature films, Japan 418 and China 400. The fact that India also has the cheapest movie tickets for any major film producing nation may help explain the high cinematic churn as well as India’s huge movie-going audience. More...

Police in Germany close two unlimited sex brothels...

A new trend in Germany -- flat-rate brothels that offer unlimited sex and food for a fixed sum -- has provoked mounting criticism from politicians, local residents and women's rights groups in recent months and led to police raids on such establishments in four cities on Sunday.

Some 700 officers raided so-called "Pussy Clubs" in Berlin, Fellbach near Stuttgart, Heidelberg and Wuppertal and two of them -- in Fellbach and Heidelberg -- have been closed due to poor sanitary conditions, officials said.

(...)

The other two brothels raided, in Berlin and Wuppertal, were allowed to remain open. The brothels in Fellbach and Heidelberg, both located in the southwestern state of Baden-Württemberg, advertise with the slogan: "Sex with every woman, as long as you want, as often as you want and how you want." Chinese companies exploiting workers in Africa...

Here in one of the richest mineral belts in the world, where copper and cobalt almost seem to burst from the rugged earth, the people have grown accustomed to foreign opportunists. Anger is mounting, however, at some of the newest arrivals: businessmen from China.

At lunch hour outside the smelters near Lubumbashi, the gritty capital of southern Congo's mining country, workers in fraying clothes and canvas sneakers rattle off complaints about their Chinese employers: wages of as little as $3 a day, backbreaking hours and a lack of safety equipment, which many said had led to severe on-the-job injuries and even deaths. Prisoner exchanged confession for sex and other weird stuff in Queensland's crime world...

IT'S almost too fanciful to be true: a prisoner is picked up from jail and taken for a drive by police officers through the suburbs on Brisbane's southside.

He's handed a list of unsolved break-and-enters, perhaps as many as 300. He reads the details: how entry was gained, what was taken, the time the crime was committed.

Files disappear in China, and the hopes of the young are dashed. Corruption in a communist state...

For much of his education, Xue Longlong was silently accompanied from grade to grade, school to school, by a sealed Manila envelope stamped top secret. Stuffed inside were grades, test results, evaluations by fellow students and teachers, his Communist Party application and — most important for his job prospects — proof of his 2006 college degree.

Everyone in China who has been to high school has such a file. The files are irreplaceable histories of achievement and failure, the starting point for potential employers, government officials and others judging an individual’s worth. Often keys to the future, they are locked tight in government, school or workplace cabinets to eliminate any chance they might vanish. More...

Women in Malaysia seek divorce, accusing husbands of black magic sex!!!

TWO women have filed for divorce on grounds that their husbands’ unusual sex drive is linked to black magic, reports Metro Ahad.

Syarie Lawyers Association deputy president Musa Awang said in the first case, the couple had been married for a year.

“The riddle to the husband’s unnatural sex drive was answered when a relative of the wife saw the husband in the house when the family had seen him left for work earlier.

“The relative heard the husband’s voice in the bedroom and upon checking, found an ‘individual’ in the room looking exactly like the husband,” he said. More...

I wouldn’t trust Google with my personal info...

When I read in the pages of this newspaper this month that the Conservative Party was planning to transfer people’s health data to Google, my heart sank. The policy described was so naive I could only hope that it was an unapproved kite-flying exercise by a young researcher in Conservative HQ. If not, what was proposed was both dangerous in its own right, and hazardous to the public acceptability of necessary reforms to the state’s handling of our private information.

There are powerful arguments for people owning their own information and having rights to control it. There are massive weaknesses in the NHS’s bloated central database and there are benefits from using the private sector. But there are also enormous risks, so we are still a long step from being able to give personal data to any company, let alone Google. More...

Family in China makes huge sacrifice for daughter's education and all they get is a tragic suicide. Sad...

July was supposed to have marked the start of Liu Wei's new life.

With more than six million other students across China, the 21-year-old was due to graduate from college this month.

For Miss Liu, the daughter of poor farmers, a degree was to be her passport out of a life of poverty, a way to escape working in the fields, or toiling as a humble migrant worker in a far-off factory in southern China.

But her dream of making the huge leap from farm girl to college graduate will never become reality. Deeply depressed and ashamed about her failure to find a job to take up when she graduated, and consumed with guilt about the financial sacrifices her family had made for her, Miss Liu brought her studies and her life to a premature end by drowning herself in a ditch full of freezing, filthy water. Church of England's complicity in Vedanta's Dongria row in India...

The idea that there could be any connection between one of India's most remote and inaccessible areas and the Church of England seems improbable, at first glance.

High in the monsoon mists in eastern India, witch doctors in the Niyamgiri hills still make sacrifices to the gods and tribes believe the hills are sacred.

Muslim women using Islam to reclaim their rights...

(...)

A new source of women's empowerment today has become active participation in the mosque and use of Islam's tradition to reclaim their rights in Islam. Reformers today emphasize that just as women during the time of the Prophet prayed in the mosque, so too today they actively exercise that right. In the centuries after the death of Muhammad, women played a small but significant role as transmitters of hadith (prophetic traditions) and in the development of Sufism (Islamic mysticism). Gradually, however, women's religious role and practice, particularly their access to education and the mosque, were severely restricted. Male religious scholars cited a variety of reasons, from moral degeneration in society to women's bringing temptation and social discord, to restrict both their presence in public life and their access to education and the mosque.

Anti-gay Singapore professor pulls out of NYU lecture stint...

A Singaporean law professor has pulled out of a teaching stint at New York University after her hardline anti-gay views triggered a backlash on campus, school officials said.

Richard Revesz, dean of New York University's law school, said Thio Li-ann had informed him she would not be teaching during the fall semester because of "controversy surrounding her views regarding homosexuality and gay rights."

"She explained that she was disappointed by what she called the atmosphere of hostility by some members of our community towards her views and by the low enrolments in her classes," he said in a statement seen Friday. More...

Two Kenyan students charge their mobile phones as they cycle...

Two Kenyan students are hoping to market a device that allows bicycle riders to charge their mobile phones.

Jeremiah Murimi, 24, and Pascal Katana, 22, said they wanted their dynamo-powered "smart charger" to help people without electricity in rural areas.

"We both come from villages and we know the problems," Mr Murimi told the BBC.

People have to travel great distances to shops where they are charged $2 a time to power their phone, usually from a car battery or solar panel.

"The device is so small you can put it in your pocket with your phone while you are on your bike," said Mr Murimi. More...

Ice-cream giant wastes MILLIONS of litres of water a day...

ICE cream giant Ben & Jerry's waste up to ONE MILLION LITRES of water A DAY because staff worldwide are told to run taps non-stop to wash scoops.

The firm - whose green ethics are central to its environmentally-friendly image - has a global policy of using controversial 'dipping wells'.

Al Gore's home hit by ... global cooling!!!

It was delightfully appropriate that, as large parts of Argentina were swept by severe blizzards last week, on a scale never experienced before, the city of Nashville, Tennessee, should have enjoyed the coolest July 21 in its history, breaking a record established in 1877. Appropriate, because Nashville is the home of Al Gore, the man who for 20 years has been predicting that we should all by now be in the grip of runaway global warming.

His predictions have proved so wildly wrong – along with those of the Met Office's £33 million computer model which forecast that we should now be enjoying a "barbecue summer" and that 2009 would be one of "the five warmest years ever" – that the propaganda machine has had to work overtime to maintain what is threatening to become the most expensive fiction in history. 12000 American kids to be swine flu vaccine guinea pigs...

Around 12,000 U.S. children will be used as guinea pigs for an experimental swine flu vaccine known to contain the dangerous ingredient squalene, which has been directly linked with cases of Gulf War Syndrome and a host of other debilitating diseases.

According to a report in the Oklahoman, 12,000 children nationwide will partake in “fast-tracked studies” to test the side-effects of the untested swine flu vaccine in trials set to begin next month.

(...)

So in effect, the authorities will vaccinate millions of children in order to try and prevent 100 deaths. If the mass vaccination program mirrors the previous swine flu outbreak of 1976 then the vaccine is likely to kill more people than the actual virus.

Furthermore, since the swine flu vaccine includes squalene, a dangerous adjuvant that contributed to Gulf War Syndrome cases, there’s little doubt that it will lead to debilitating lifelong diseases far more deadly than the swine flu virus itself for thousands of children if a mass vaccination campaign is conducted. Catholic Church and Catholics speak out against Berlusconi...

The Italian Catholic Church has decided enough is enough and is now speaking clearly against the way Berlusconi has behaved and is dealing with the allegations of late-night parties with escorts in his Sardinian and Roman homes.

In an editorial piece in L'Avvenire, the newspaper of the Italian Catholic Church, the director Dino Boffo says "This story is not at all pleasing, and from what we can gather a large part of the country is not pleased either".

"We do not like it that certain behaviours are justified through opinion polls - as if a lack of public condemnation can forgive the behaviour." Suite...

4 Afghan women dead in Canada in apparent "honour" killing...

Canadian authorities have charged an Afghan immigrant, his wife and their oldest son with four counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of three Montreal sisters and an older female relative.

Zainab Shafia, 19, Sahar Shafia, 17, and Geeti Shafia, 13, all sisters, were found dead with Rona Amir Mohammed, 50, in a submerged car June 30 in the historic Rideau Canal near Kingston, Ontario.

From the beginning, investigators were baffled how the car managed to negotiate several obstacles to end up in the canal tail first, without leaving any skid marks. More...

Fired lingerie workers protest at Swiss embassies...

Seamstresses in Bangkok and Manila have been protesting before Swiss embassies to air complaints against the Aargau-based lingerie firm, Triumph International.

The company, with headquarters in Zurzach, said it would make 3,714 workers redundant at sister firms in Thailand and the Philippines.

Triumph, which employs 40,000 people worldwide, said in a statement that a "general downturn in consumer demand" prompted the move. It said it had given written notices to employees according to law and that discussions were still underway with unions over severance pay. More...

India not impressed by global warming "science..."

A split between rich and poor nations in the run-up to climate-change talks widened on Thursday.

India rejected key scientific findings on global warming, while the European Union called for more action by developing states on greenhouse gas emissions.

Jairam Ramesh, the Indian environment minister, accused the developed world of needlessly raising alarm over melting Himalayan glaciers.

He dismissed scientists’ predictions that Himalayan glaciers might disappear within 40 years as a result of global warming. More...

Why the pirates are on the rise in Sweden...

For 24-hour party people a visit to the land of the midnight sun is a must. For one thing, the Swedes are serious when it comes to having fun - and at this time of year the sun never sets.

And so it is that I find myself at the Peace and Love festival in Borlänge long after bedtime, negotiating a sea of tents which stretches far into the blood-red glow of a night-long dusk .

I am here to try to find out what it is about Swedes that has put them at the heart of a raging debate about internet freedom. More + video...
