Suite...

Protests across Britain target Israel over Gaza bombing...

Demonstrators took to the streets across Britain on Saturday to protest against Israeli airstrikes on Gaza.

The biggest rally was in London, where organisers were expecting thousands of protestors including singer Annie Lennox and former London mayor Ken Livingstone to march through the British capital.

Demonstrators on the event organised by the Stop the War Coalition were to leave old shoes for Prime Minister Gordon Brown at his Downing Street residence, in the spirit of an Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at US President George W. Bush. More...

Suite...

Singapore: African faces death for marijuana trafficking...

A Ghanaian who came to Singapore to try out for a football club has been found guilty of drug trafficking and will face the death penalty, a newspaper reported on Saturday.

Chijioke Stephen Obioha, 29, came to Singapore in November 2005 to try out for the football club Sporting Afrique, the paper said. He did not make the cut and instead made a living selling electronics.

Obioha was found guilty on Tuesday of trafficking 2.6 kg (5.7 lb) of cannabis or marijuana.

Singapore's drug laws are among the world's harshest drug. Anyone caught carrying more than 15 grams (0.5 ounce) of heroin, 30 grams of cocaine, 500 grams (17.6 ounce) of cannabis or 250 grams of methamphetamines faces a mandatory death sentence, carried out by hanging.

Penalties for consumption are also strict, including up to 10 years in jail, a S$20,000 ($13,740) fine, or both.

Sri Lanka: Tamil Tigers lose key town, but war far from over...

The Sri Lankan army's capture of the northern town of Kilinochchi marks a new phase in the fighting between the security forces and the Tamil Tiger rebels.

With its fall the rebels have now lost the biggest township they had under their control for more than a decade.

For the security forces, it will enable them to consolidate their domination of the key A9 highway, which links the Jaffna peninsula with the rest of the country.

The Tamil Tigers until recently had their administrative headquarters in the town. They proudly showcased offices of their political, police and judicial divisions to visiting foreign dignitaries and media. In fact, it acted like their de-facto capital. More...

Gaza: Kettring Town soccer team rooting for Palestinians!!!

The slogan 'Palestine Aid' will be emblazoned on Kettering Town's shirts for their FA Cup tie with Eastwood Town.

Shirts worn by players in an FA Cup tie tomorrow will be the unlikely advertising hoarding for the plight of Palestinians. Kettering Town will have the slogan Palestine Aid emblazoned on their kit to show their support for Interpal, a charitable organisation which distributes aid in the Palestinian territories.

"We are trying to raise awareness and charitable funds for the refugees in Palestine," Imraan Ladak, the Kettering chairman, said of the association with Interpal that began before the escalation last month of the conflict in Gaza. More...

Gaza: British telecom firm severs ties with Israeli counterparts...

British telecommunications firm FreedomCall has terminated its cooperation with Israel's MobileMax due to the IDF operation in Gaza.

"We received an email from the British company informing us that it is severing all ties with us and any other Israeli company following Israel's strike in Gaza," said CEO Raanan Cohen.

"We weren't expecting this from them and there was no prior warning. I don't intend to appeal to them or answer the letter."

The email from FreedomCall said, "As a result of the Israeli government action in the last few days we will no longer be in a position to consider doing business with yourself or any other Israeli company."

MobileMax, established in 2004, produces a program providing cellular phones with inexpensive international service.

President of Guyana not amused by fake Facebook profile!!!

There are hundreds of George Bushes, scores of Fidel Castros, and dozens of Hugo Chávezes, all with prank profiles on the social networking website Facebook, but when someone tried to pass him or herself off as the president of Guyana the real president didn't see the funny side.

Some world leaders, including Nicolas Sarkozy, have genuine Facebook profiles boasting thousands of supporters, but Bharrat Jagdeo, the leader of Guyana since 1999, is not one of them.

A fake profile of the president attracted almost 200 supporters before Jagdeo lodged a complaint and called in the police. He issued a terse statement pointing out that he is not, and never has been, a member of Facebook, or any other social networking site. More...

Microsoft crows about China's harsh sentences to software pirates...

Microsoft patted itself on the back on New Year’s Eve by announcing that the alleged ringleaders of a Chinese piracy gang, who sold at least $2bn worth of counterfeit software, have been sentenced to harsh prison terms.

The company said that 11 defendants were handed sentences that ranged from one and a half to six and a half years.

Redmond claimed the Futian People’s Court in Shenzhen, China had dished out “the longest sentences, for this type of crime” in the country’s history. However, China has remained characteristically quiet about the piracy syndicate’s downfall. More...

From Dachau to Gaza, Nazis and Israelis...

During the summer of 1982 I had the opportunity to visit the Nazi concentration camp just outside Dachau, Germany and then the little town itself. Given the proximity of the town to the camp, my immediate reaction was: “This town is so close to the camp that the citizens of Dachau must have known what was going on out there. Why did they not do anything about it?” I had the exact same reaction during the last two weeks of May 1986 as I traveled up and down the West Bank and Gaza Strip in order to investigate Israel’s atrocities and war crimes against the Palestinians. Singer Annie Lennox and comedian Alexei Sayle, have led calls for an end to what they call the "slaughter and systematic murder" of Arabs in Gaza.

The pair joined a panel of public figures, which also included Ken Livingstone, Bianca Jagger and George Galloway, in a news conference demanding that Israel stop its 'siege'.

An almost tearful Annie Lennox described the sadness she felt when she watched news of the Israeli strikes on Gaza - attacks which Israel says were in response to rocket fire by Hamas and its allies. More...

Violence between Hamas and Israel is continuing for a sixth successive day in the Palestinian territory with the death toll approaching 400.

Suite...

Sri Lanka: troops enter Kilinochchi...

Sri Lankan troops marched into the Tamil Tigers' de facto capital of Kilinochchi and the town is about to fall into government hands, an official said on Friday, in what would be a major blow for the rebels. The Sri Lankan military has had a series of battlefield victories against the Tigers and vowed to defeat the group this year to end their more than 25-year separatist campaign.

"(The) fall of Kilinochchi soon will be a reality," said defence ministry spokesman and government minister Keheliya Rambukwella.

Sources from President Mahinda Rajapaksa's office told Reuters that troops had entered Kilinochchi from two locations and that fighting with rebels was going on. Military sources said an announcement was expected soon from Rajapaksa. More...

Unpaid leave for Singapore Airlines cargo pilots?

Singapore Airlines (SIA) is in talks with cargo pilots to take leave with no pay after the global economic slump hammered freight demand, a spokesman said Wednesday.

Stephen Forshaw said the unpaid leave periods will be for up to 30 months and are meant to deal with an expected surplus of pilots next year and beyond while the company sidelines aircraft in the face of falling demand.

"The outlook for the freight industry is weak. Around the world, shipping companies are parking vessels and all-cargo airlines are being severely affected," he said in a statement. More...

Why you should delete your MySpace account...

Today I am deleting all the content from my Myspace account and leaving only this notice. I’ve been inspired by the Franklin Street Statement and Identi.ca and I realize that a free/libre/open source internet is still possible, but it will require us to stop supporting corporate websites such as myspace. Here are some good reasons to delete your Myspace page, and support alternatives not run by corporations.

(-)

This is just the beginning, I’m planning on getting off of Facebook and other web services as well, and I hope you do too. We can have an internet that is Free/Libre/Open Source, but only if we stop supporting the corporate, locked down options we’ve been using all of these years. As these services become more a part of our lives and get into our phones and our everyday communications, it is critical that we fight for our freedom.  Full story...

But this year's show with Prime Minister Geir Haarde was cut short 45 minutes into the program when a torch-wielding crowd stormed Reykjavik's Hotel Borg in an attempt to get to the studio.

Gaza faces 'alarming' humanitarian situation. No kidding!!!

Gaza's 1.5 million residents are facing an "alarming" humanitarian situation under constant Israeli bombardment, with the main power plant shut down, overcrowded hospitals struggling to cope and very limited food supplies, U.N. officials said.

The power plant shut down on Tuesday because Israel has blocked fuel delivery through the main pipeline since Dec. 26, U.N. humanitarian chief John Holmes said Wednesday. This has forced hospitals to use generators, which have limited fuel supplies, and left many of the 650,000 people in central and northern Gaza with power cuts of 16 hours a day or more, he said.

"The situation remains alarming," Holmes said. "Hospitals are obviously still struggling very much to cope with the number of casualties. We have continued to get some medical supplies in and to help them cope, but this remains difficult and fragile." More...

Happy New Year, Gaza! Here are more missiles. Love, Israel...

BBC journalist and Gaza resident Rushdi Abou Alouf describes the situation in Gaza on the sixth day of Israel's air assault on Palestinian militant group Hamas. Israel is currently preventing international reporters from entering Gaza.

There were more than four Israeli air strikes in Gaza City in the first hour of 2009. The sounds of bombs and explosions were heard all over the city.

I was at home in Gaza City, about 200m from the Hamas education ministry, which was hit last night.

We stayed away from the windows. We leave them open because the glass breaks if the Israelis bomb nearby, so it is very cold. It was hard to keep my four-year-old son calm. More...

Norway gets tough on sex buyers...

As Norway rings in the new year it will introduce a new law making the purchase - but not the sale - of sex a criminal act, threatening even to put Norwegians who buy sex abroad behind bars.

'We think buying sex is unacceptable because it favours human trafficking and forced prostitution,' Deputy Justice Minister Astri Aas-Hansen told AFP.

Street prostitution has become ever more visible in Norwegian cities in recent years, with prostitute support organisations estimating the country of just 4.6 million people counts as many as 3,000 sex workers.

The new law, which is modelled on similar legislation in Sweden, aims to clean up the streets and protect the prostitutes by outlawing the buying of sex, but not the sale. More...

Rabbi: Kick Madoff out of the Jewish people...

Rabbi Joshua Hammerman, religious leader of Temple Beth El in Stamford, Conn., wants Bernard Madoff excommunicated. Here's the rabbi's letter to Malcolm Hoenlein (not sure why this is a job for the Conference of Presidents, but we can discuss that another time) making the case for such a drastic step:

(-)

David Harris of the American Jewish Committee wrote in a letter to the New York Times of his concern that the Times’ coverage of Madoff had placed a “striking emphasis on his being Jewish.” But the Times is hardly alone in drawing that connection: Google “Madoff” and “Jewish” and 295,000 Web links already appear. The ADL called this a spike in online anti-Semitism. So we have a situation where Jews are being blamed for a crime that has disproportionately harmed Jews. I can understand why Jewish organizations are jittery about anti-Semites having a field day on this matter, but the most effective way to address it is through a clear repudiation not only of Madoff himself, but of the anti-Judaic nature of his acts. Politically correct BBC pulls McCartney's Jackson impersonation...

The BBC has pulled an interview with Sir Paul McCartney in which the former Beatle did a "trans-racial impression" of Michael Jackson, it has been claimed.

Sir Paul is said to have talked in a high-pitched Jackson-style voice when asked about the singer, which BBC managers decided could prove offensive.

A Corporation source told the Daily Mail: "McCartney started to reply in this high-pitched Jacko voice, and apparently it was very funny. But the BBC - deeply nervous, perhaps because of the Jonathan Ross-Russell Brand affair - has declined to broadcast the interview."  More...

Suite...

Two Israelis shot in Denmark...

A gunman wounded two Israelis working at a packed central Denmark shopping mall Wednesday, Danish police said.

The two wounded men are Israelis in their 20s, police spokesman Lars Thede said. He said it was too early to speculate on whether they were targeted because of their nationality.

One of the wounded was shot in the arm and the other in the leg, police said. Their condition is unclear.

The shooting took place at the Rosengaard mall in Odense, 170 kilometers (105 miles) west of Copenhagen. It occurred around 3:30 p.m. (14:30 GMT), when the mall was filled with people doing last-minute shopping before the New Year's break. More...
