Texas school baseball players accused of chicken sacrifice...

Police are investigating reports that two Western Hills High School baseball players were involved in an act of cruelty to chickens in an effort to improve their performance.

The two players, whom the district did not identify, were kicked off the team for the rest of the year and disciplined, school officials said.

The students are alleged to have sacrificed chickens -- possibly baby chicks -- on the baseball field, according to sources with knowledge of the incident.

Western Hills baseball coach Bobby McIntire said he hadn't had a chance to talk to the students involved yet and does not know why they did it.

"Baseball is very superstitious, and I assume [movies like Major League and Bull Durham] are where they got it from," McIntire said. More...

"Police in Bahrain arrested my brother for blogging..."

At 3am on Wednesday morning they came to arrest my brother, Mahmood, at his home. His son Arif witnessed the arrest by Bahraini police who claimed to have a warrant. His crime was nothing more than trying to promote dialogue between the protesters and government of Bahrain.

Mahmood al-Yousif is a prominent blogger back home. They call him the Blogfather because his was one of the first such websites in Bahrain. Since people started demonstrating against the government on 14 February he had been consistently advocating dialogue and peaceful protest.

As a matter of fact, Mahmood started a campaign in October 2006, which he called Just Bahraini. He solicited donations to get badges and wristbands printed with the words: "No Shia, No Sunni, Just Bahraini", which he freely distributed. Recently people who possess these badges have become targets of intimidation. More...

A non-Muslim white girl puts on a hijab and walks into a mall...

(...)

When I stepped into that mall, I realized just how different this particular outing was going to be from others I’ve had in the past. The first store I walked into was Best Buy, but I visited every store in the mall at least once. No sooner did I step into Best Buy, I noticed how different things were. First of all, the person at the door didn’t greet me like he did to other customers entering the store. I didn’t think nothing of it at first, and instead I went over to look at the CDs and DVDs in the store. Usually when a customer is browsing the store, one of the employees will approach them and ask if they need any help finding something. This didn’t happen once, not even when I made direct eye contact with an employee whom I went to school with. She didn’t recognize me. I can’t blame her for it, since my long hair was covered up, but I couldn’t help but feel that all she saw was my hijab and not me, let alone a customer.

The salespeople at the mall were pretty much the same. There were only a select few who actually said more than one word to me. The employees would not welcome me into their stores. They wouldn’t ask if I needed help. They wouldn’t ask if I wanted to try on an outfit, even when I was holding it in my hands. They never said “We hope to see you again!” or “Have a nice day,” when I left the store. Judging by this consistent reaction from salesperson to salesperson, I couldn’t help but feel that they were glad to be rid of me and most definitely didn’t hope to see me again. To make matters uncomfortably worse, in every store I went into, I noticed that the same security guard was there. From Spencer’s to Borders, this security guard wasn’t making it a secret that he was following me everywhere I went. Full story...

TSA fires witch for casting spell on colleague's car heater!!!

Here's a situation for all you aspiring managers: If you were the boss at a U.S. government agency and one of your employees complained that she was afraid of a co-worker's religious practices, what would you do?

Would it change your decision if the religion were Wicca, and the employee feared her co-worker because she thought she might cast a spell on her?

Here's how the Transportation Security Administration handled it:

It fired the witch.

Each person's story is unique, but what happened to Carole A. Smith gives us a glimpse of the work life of the 400,000-plus Wiccans in the United States. And it sheds light on work life at the TSA, where the 40,000-plus public employees who keep bad people and bad things off of airplanes have started voting this month on whether to join a union. CIA operative appointed to run al-Qaeda connected Libyan rebels...

On Saturday, McClatchy reported that Khalifa Hifter, a former Gaddafi military officer, was appointed to lead the rebel army supported by the United Nations, the United States and the Globalist Coalition.

Hifter spent two decades living in suburban Virginia “where he established a life but maintained ties to anti-Gaddafi groups,” writes Chris Adams for the newspaper. A friend told the journalist he “was unsure exactly what Hifter did to support himself, and that Hifter primarily focused on helping his large family.”

As it turns out, Mr. Hifter is a CIA operative, which likely explains his lengthy stay in Virginia. In 1996, the Washington Post reported that a Col. Haftar (a variation on Hifter) had arrived in the United States and he was “reported to be the leader of a contra-style group based in the U.S. called the Libyan National Army,” the Wisdom Fund noted at the time. “This group is supported by the U.S., and has been given training facilities in the U.S. It’s a good presumption that Col. Haftar’s group operates in Libya with the blessings of our government.” More...

New Egyptian law criminalizes protests. Wonderful! Democracy has come to Egypt, huh?

The Egyptian Cabinet on Wednesday ordered a law criminalizing protests and strikes. Under the new law, anyone organizing or calling for a protest will be sentenced to jail and/or a fine of LE500,000.

The new law will be enforced as long as the current Emergency Law is in place, said the cabinet in a statement on Wednesday. The Emergency Law has been in force since 1981 following the assassination of former President Anwar Sadat.

The new law will apply to anyone inciting, urging, promoting or participating in a protest or strike that hampers or delays work at any private or public establishments.

Since the overthrow of former President Hosni Mubarak on 11 February, Egypt has witnessed nationwide labor strikes and political protests. Among those protesting have been university students, political activists, railway workers, doctors, pharmacists, lawyers, journalists, pensioners, and the police force. Source...

Indian cricket fan willing to swap kidney for World Cup ticket!!!

If Sanjay Kumar Sen doesn't manage to swap one of his kidneys for a ticket to the World Cup semi-final, he has 600 marauding Indian veterinary pharmacists to thank.

The young Punjabi fan has attracted the bemused attention of the world's cricket media this week with his determined vigil outside the Punjab Cricket Association stadium in Mohali.

For several days he has held a sign in cheerful blue and pink crayon which reads: "Get my kidney, give me ticket." He told one Indian television reporter on Monday: "No one comes to the counter. It has been three days and I still haven't got a ticket. Someone came from the counter and said to take a ticket on the black market for 20,000 ($427) to 25,000 rupees. Libyan rebels massacre black Africans...

(...)

Heinsohn cites a report by the well-known Zimbabwean journalist and documentary filmmaker Farai Sevenzo dealing with barbaric, pogrom-like massacres perpetrated by the so-called “rebels” against black African workers in Libya. The article states:

“Because mercenaries from Chad and Mali are presumed to be fighting for him [Gaddafi], the lives of a million African refugees and thousands of African migrants are at risk. A Turkish construction worker told the British radio station BBC: ‘We had seventy to eighty people from Chad working for our company. They were massacred with pruning shears and axes, accused by the attackers of being Gaddafi’s troops. The Sudanese people were massacred. We saw it for ourselves.’ ”

The genocide authority Heinsohn explains: “It is standard knowledge in genocide research that minorities come under attack in civil wars because at least one party to the conflict accuses them of collaborating with the enemy. Full story...

Maternity tourism: Chinese women deliberately having babies in the US...

The building inspectors and police officers walked into the small row of connected town houses here knowing something was amiss. Neighbors had complained about noise and a lot of pregnant women coming and going. And when they went into a kitchen they saw a row of clear bassinets holding several infants, with a woman acting as a nurse hovering over them.

For months, officials say, the house was home to “maternity tourists,” in this case, women from China who had paid tens of thousands of dollars to deliver their babies in the United States, making the infants automatic American citizens. Officials shut down the home, sending the 10 mothers who had been living there with their babies to nearby motels.

“These were not women living in squalor — it was a well taken care of place and clean, but there were a lot of women and babies,” said Clayton Anderson, a city inspector who shut down the house on March 9. “I have never seen anything like this before. We really couldn’t determine the exact number of people living there.” More...

Model's nude photos provoke controversy in prudish Vietnam...

A model who published nude photos of herself on the internet has sparked a media frenzy in Vietnam as critics claim the images threaten traditional values in the communist country.

Last week, actress and model Ngoc Quyen, 23, published a series of photos of herself posing naked by a river in a forest in rural Vietnam. The images carried the caption "take care of nature in the same way you care for your body."

The story spread like wildfire in the media, Facebook and internet chat forums, with many commentators criticizing the use of nudity to raise awareness for a cause.

Ngoc Quyen said she published the photos as a personal initiative, unconnected to any organized environmental campaign.

One post on popular website Dan Viet by a contributor calling themselves Huyen Trang, said: "Nude photos are not acceptable in Vietnamese culture. She is not protecting but polluting the environment. More...

Behind every successful Singapore soldier, there's a maid!!!

A photograph of a maid carrying a soldier's rucksack as she walked behind him has sparked outrage in Singapore and concern that recruits to its armed forces are a pampered lot.

The picture, published in the Singaporean media and on the Internet this week, showed the male soldier in military fatigues and combat boots strolling on a footpath.

His female maid followed a step behind with the military-issued rucksack slung over her left shoulder.

Reactions to the photograph, which was first posted on Facebook, ranged from amusement to anger and claims that Singapore's current generation of soldiers were "softies".

Australia's oldest Hindu temple in New South Wales was attacked by unidentified masked gunmen who fired several shots at it, triggering panic among the community members.

Sri Mandir at Auburn, which is more than three decades old, was attacked by two men, who were wearing balaclavas or ski masks, on the night of March 19.

The attackers were caught on CCTV firing shots at the temple. No one was killed or seriously injured in the incident, which created panic among the temple's priest and worshippers, local media reported. More...

More than a billion people watched India vs Pakistan World Cup cricket semi-finals...

More than a billion people are thought to have watched India beat Pakistan by 29 runs in the World Cup cricket semi-final in the Indian city of Mohali.

Both countries largely ground to a halt during the match, which was attended by their respective prime ministers.

It was the first time the two sides had played on each other's soil since the 2008 Mumbai (Bombay) attacks.

The nuclear-armed neighbours' ties hit a low after the attacks, which were blamed on Pakistan-based militants.

India now play Sri Lanka in the final in Mumbai on Saturday and celebrations have erupted around the country.

Proficiency in English around the world. Scandinavian countries come out tops...

English proficiency is highest in Europe as a whole. All the very high proficiency countries and all but one of the high proficiency countries are found there. However, the trend does not hold for all European countries: Spain, Italy and Turkey fall behind their neighbors.

Asia has a range of English proficiency levels from high in Malaysia to very low in Vietnam and Indonesia. The wealthier Asian countries tend to have higher levels of proficiency, as would be expected from their higher rates of school attendance and greater investment in private English courses.

Latin America has the lowest level of English proficiency of any region. Only Mexico and Argentina score above low proficiency. Historically weaker school enrollment levels, more political unrest, and low levels of government investment in education are all contributing factors.

Doctor in court after father's 29-year fight for justice for dead daughter...

At 9.30am in the Grande Salle of Paris's historic Palais de Justice, a story worthy of a bestselling thriller will begin to unfold; a tale of a mysterious death, international kidnapping, a struck-off doctor, cover-ups, legal loopholes and a grief-stricken father's promise to his dead daughter.

It is the story of Kalinka Bamberski, a pretty, sporty 14-year-old French girl who was found dead in bed one morning in July 1982 while spending the summer with her mother and stepfather in Germany.

The stepfather was Dr Dieter Krombach, a German GP, who admitted giving the teenager an injection of iron compound to help her tan more easily, and who was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced in his absence to 15 years in jail in France – but remained at liberty in Germany.

It is also the story of André Bamberski and his 29-year quest to bring to justice the man he is convinced raped and killed his daughter, and fulfil the posthumous vow he made her. More...

Indian state of Gujarat bans "Ghandi had a gay lover" book...

A controversial book on Mahatma Gandhi has been banned by the government in his native state of Gujarat.

Chief Minister Narendra Modi said that its contents were "perverse and defamed the icon of non-violence".

The book by Pulitzer Prize winning author Joseph Lelyveld contains evidence that India's independence hero had a homosexual relationship.

Correspondents say that more bans can be expected in a country where homosexuality still carries a stigma.

It was only made legal in 2009.

Malaysian gay-themed movie a smash hit at the box office...

Malaysia's first gay-themed romance film has become a swift box-office success, attracting curious cinema audiences who rarely get to see movies centered on sexuality because of strict censorship in this Muslim-majority nation, its producer said Wednesday.

The Malay-language movie, called "Dalam Botol," or "In a Bottle," grossed slightly more than 1 million ringgit ($330,000) in its first five days, recouping its production and marketing costs of 970,000 ringgit ($320,000), said Raja Azmi Raja Sulaiman, who wrote and produced the film.

The movie depicts a Muslim man who has a sex change operation because he believes it will please his male lover, but his effort ends in heartbreak for both of them. Some gay rights advocates have called it an unfairly negative portrayal of gay and transgender people. More...

Pakistan's secret dirty war...

The bodies surface quietly, like corks bobbing up in the dark. They come in twos and threes, a few times a week, dumped on desolate mountains or empty city roads, bearing the scars of great cruelty. Arms and legs are snapped; faces are bruised and swollen. Flesh is sliced with knives or punctured with drills; genitals are singed with electric prods. In some cases the bodies are unrecognisable, sprinkled with lime or chewed by wild animals. All have a gunshot wound in the head.

This gruesome parade of corpses has been surfacing in Balochistan, Pakistan's largest province, since last July. Several human rights groups, including Amnesty International, have accounted for more than 100 bodies – lawyers, students, taxi drivers, farm workers. Most have been tortured. The last three were discovered on Sunday.

(...)

The forces of law and order also seem to be curiously indifferent to the plight of the dead men. Not a single person has been arrested or prosecuted; in fact, police investigators openly admit they are not even looking for anyone. The stunning lack of interest in Pakistan's greatest murder mystery in decades becomes more understandable, however, when it emerges that the prime suspect is not some shady gang of sadistic serial killers, but the country's powerful military and its unaccountable intelligence men. Australian woman drugged and raped by three men in UAE and then jailed for "adultery..."

An Australian woman is suing a luxury United Arab Emirates resort after she was jailed for adultery when she complained of being drugged and raped by three men.

Alica Gali, from Brisbane, was sentenced to 12 months in prison after an assault by three co-workers while drinking at the Le Meridien Al Aqah Beach Resort staff bar in Fujairah, UAE in June 2008.

After reporting the incident to police, Ms Gali was jailed for adultery and served eight months before being pardoned in March 2009 and returning to Australia.

At a hearing in Brisbane Supreme Court on Friday, Maurice Blackburn lawyers were granted leave to sue the hotel, alleging Ms Gali's employer breached its workplace obligations by failing to have systems in place to protect their workers against assault. More...

Hosni Mubarak, Egypt's ousted president, has been put under house arrest along with his family, according to an Egyptian military statement.

Egypt's Supreme Council of the Armed Forces on Monday said that the former leader and his family would not be allowed to leave the country and denied reports that Mubarak had fled to Saudi Arabia.

Crows in Malaysia stealing bras and panties to make nests!!!

After a report earlier this month that someone was getting cheap thrills from stealing panties and bras left to dry outside several homes here, residents in nearby Ulu Tiram have complained that they are also finding their undergarments missing.

However, their initial suspicion that a sexual predator was at work turned out to be wrong when they discovered that the actual culprits were crows which have been stealing the lingerie to build their nests.

Not only that. The birds also steal scraps of food and leave their droppings all over the neighbourhood in several housing and business areas in the town, about 18km from here. More...

Rebels have already established a new Central Bank of Libya! That was fast...

The rebels in Libya are in the middle of a life or death civil war and Moammar Gadhafi is still in power and yet somehow the Libyan rebels have had enough time to establish a new Central Bank of Libya and form a new national oil company. Perhaps when this conflict is over those rebels can become time management consultants. They sure do get a lot done. What a skilled bunch of rebels - they can fight a war during the day and draw up a new central bank and a new national oil company at night without any outside help whatsoever. If only the rest of us were so versatile! But isn't forming a central bank something that could be done after the civil war is over? According to Bloomberg, the Transitional National Council has "designated the Central Bank of Benghazi as a monetary authority competent in monetary policies in Libya and the appointment of a governor to the Central Bank of Libya, with a temporary headquarters in Benghazi." Apparently someone felt that it was very important to get pesky matters such as control of the banks and control of the money supply out of the way even before a new government is formed. More...

Mother of raped Libyan woman offered cash if daughter "changes" her allegations...

The mother of a Libyan woman who said she had been raped by pro-government militiamen said she had been asked to convince her daughter to retract the allegations in return for her freedom and cash or a new home.

Eman al-Obaidi burst into a hotel full of foreign journalists in Tripoli on Saturday and told them, weeping, how she had been held for two days and raped by 15 militiamen loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

After being intimidated by security men and hotel staff, who also beat journalists trying to interview her in the restaurant of the hotel, she was bundled into a car and driven away.

Her allegations have not been independently verified. The government said on Sunday Obaidi had been released and she was with her family.

Her mother, Aisha Ahmad, told journalists she had been contacted by the authorities about her daughter and how she could be freed. More...

China executed more people in 2010 than rest of world combined...

China sentenced thousands of people to death last year even as the rest of the world’s combined number dropped, Amnesty International said Monday.

The London-based group said it could not determine the exact number of executions in China because the figure is listed as a state secret, but it estimated that China executed thousands of people in 2010 for ‘‘a wide range of crimes that include nonviolent offences and after proceedings that did not meet international fair trial standards.’‘

The number of executions elsewhere, according to the group’s annual report, went down from at least 714 people in 2009 to at least 527 in 2010, while at least 23 countries carried out judicial executions in 2010, four more than 2009. More...

Two Christians killed, churches burned in Pakistan in revenge attack for Florida Koran burning...

Two believers killed, churches attacked, copies of the Bible burned: the Christian community in Pakistan is once again the victim of violence by Islamic fundamentalists, who have targeted places of worship in the country. The extremist violence was triggered by the insane act - repeatedly condemned by Christians in Pakistan and India – of the pastor Wayne Sapp, who last March 20, in Florida burned a Koran under the supervision of the evangelical preacher Terry Jones. The escalating violence has raised alarm over the fate of Asia Bibi, a symbol of the abuses committed in the name of the blasphemy law. The bishop of Islamabad / Rawalpindi defines the US pastor a "fanatic" who encourages followers to a "violent ideology", the consequences of which have an impact "on innocent Christians" across the world.

On March 25, a mob of Islamic extremists attacked a Pentecostal church in Hyderabad, killing two Christians and burning some copies of the Bible. Eyewitnesses said that the fundamentalists stormed the place of worship looking to set it on fire, but a group of believers defended the church. Security forces have fled the scene, leaving those present at the mercy of the crowd. The attackers hurled anti-Christian slogans and a feeling of anger toward the religious minority has spread. in the city The pastor of the church reports that "despite the condemnation of the burning of the Koran" the community "has come under attack because they think that we are linked to the Americans. Bayer ordered to pay 136.8 million in US GM rice contamination case...

A unit of Germany's Bayer AG (BAYGn.DE) has been ordered by a court in Arkansas to pay $136.8 million to Riceland Foods over the contamination of U.S. long grain rice stocks with a genetically modified strain from Bayer that decimated exports more than four years ago.

The judgment, handed down by a jury in Stuttgart, Arkansas, includes $125 million in punitive damages to Riceland, a farmers cooperative.

Bayer said it is "disappointed" with the verdict and is considering its legal options. It said the punitive damages exceed what is permitted by Arkansas law and will therefore be limited to the statutory cap of $1 million. More...

India-made e-toilets revolutionise sanitation...

A coin is dropped into the slot and bingo the door to the toilet slides open, the light and exhaust fan turn on. And after use, in case you forget to flush, the automated flushing turns on and sterilizes the commode too. Welcome to unmanned electronic public toilets that are making their presence felt in India.

(...)

"It features an automated door opening, power flushing, automatic closet washing and sterilization, and automatic platform cleaning mechanism, all backed by SMS alerts to inform the control room about the status of water tank and bio gas plant in the event of any errors or failures," Vinod told IANS.

An e-toilet occupies around 20 square feet and has two doors -- a sliding door at the front, and a normal door ahead of the toilet.

"As soon as the coin (entry charge) is dropped, the sliding door opens and the light and the exhaust fan come on. Inside the toilet there is a bucket, mug and all other items. In case the user does not flush the toilet after use, the system automatically does all the cleaning operations." Full story...
