A court in Pakistan has freed a Christian man who was wrongly jailed for 25 years for blasphemy after he allegedly defiled the Koran, the Muslim holy book, by touching it with unwashed hands.
Munir Masih, had consistently denied the allegations against him, arguing that they were false and made maliciously by a Muslim neighbour whose child had been involved in a quarrel with his 10-year-old son.
He has been freed on bail but his wife, Ruqqiya Bibbi, who was also given a 25-year sentence for the offence, is still in jail awaiting the outcome of her application for bail. More...

30,000 Indian students have left Australia...
A spate of attacks, tough visa norms and denial of permanent residency have caused around 30,000 Indian students, mostly based in Melbourne, to leave Australia in the past year, claims the Federation of Indian Students in Australia (FISA).
The figure is quoted in the latest issue of Indian Student, published from Melbourne, a copy of which is available with IANS. The magazine in its editorial says it appears Australia is no more a favourite destination for Indian students with this huge exodus in a year's time.
The magazine quoting Gautam Gupta, spokesperson of FISA, said race attacks is one of the major reasons behind the exodus. More...

It is alleged that Mr. Hill "intended to pervert the course of justice" by sending copies of his documentary film, "7/7 Ripple Effect", to a UK courthouse, requesting that the court administrators deliver the DVDs to the judge and jury foreman in a case related to three men accused of helping plan the 2005 London tube-train bombings. All three men have since been found not guilty on those charges. However, as a result of posting the DVDs, Mr. Hill now faces extradition and a possible life sentence in the UK. More...

A drug that will erase our memory? Serious research or just quack science...
Drug researchers are working on a mind-altering chemical that could erase your memories. It's all being pursued under the umbrella of "mental health" with claims that this could help victims of emotional trauma. The idea that you can "heal" a patient by chemically lobotomizing them is, of course, entirely consistent with the core mythology of modern medicine: If something's wrong, you should poison it, burn it, irradiate it or cut it out... and then pronounce the patient "healed!"
In the case of memory-erasing drugs, scientists are reportedly working on a drug that would remove certain proteins from the brain's "fear center." This is based on the ludicrous idea, by the way, that memories are recorded solely by physical proteins in the brain -- an idea that's obviously based on an entirely outmoded mechanistic model of the human mind and brain. A statue of an angel holding a mobile phone is to be installed in The St. John's Cathedral in Den Bosch, Netherlands next month, to replace an older statue that had been badly eroded by weather and pollution.
The new 1.25 meters high statue is made of sandstone and will be placed about 15 metres above ground on the south-side of the Cathedral. The mobile phone of the angel has only one button though. That is, the artist said, "because the angel just have to communicate with God."
The statue was designed by sculptor Tony Mooy from Amersfoort and approved by an art committee of the church. Mooy wanted other angels with wings instead of jet engines, but that went too far the ecclesiastical art committee. Source...

"Some 300 football games a season are fixed in Europe's top leagues..."
The former German football manager Sepp Herberger once famously said that people go to football matches because they do not know who will win. I have just watched a match in the almost certain knowledge not only of who would win, but with a fairly shrewd idea of what the score would be.
I was right on both counts. This game was played last weekend in the top division of a European league and I was not the only one who knew. At least £1.5m (€1.76m) was wagered on this game via betting exchanges - a game that would normally have attracted perhaps £50,000 (€58,800). More...

Cops and Copts clash in Egypt over church construction...
Police in Egypt have clashed with hundreds of Coptic Christians over the construction of a new church.
One protester was killed and dozens of people were injured as police fired tear gas and the Christians threw stones and petrol bombs.
The Christians said they had permission to build the church, in Cairo's Giza district, but officials said they did not have the proper permit.
Protests on this scale are rare from Egypt's Christians. More...

Teenaged boy raped at knife-point by 10 women...
A 17-year-old boy was gang raped by 10 knife-wielding women in Papua New Guinea, a media report said Monday.
The gang of women attacked the schoolboy near Mendi town in Southern Highlands province during the weekend, police official Teddy Tei said.
"More than 10 women with kitchen knives attacked him and four women had sexual intercourse with him. The boy was taken to hospital for treatment," he was quoted as saying by Australia's AAP news agency.
Tei said he feared the women may have infected the young man with HIV/AIDS.
"HIV/AIDS is a problem in Papua New Guinea and I am concerned the women might be infected. I always warn the women to be careful at night but I am now warning the men too," he said.
A UNICEF report says Papua New Guinea has one of the world's highest rates of sexual violence. Source...
