Women in Indonesia's Aceh banned from wearing jeans and trousers!!!

Women wearing jeans and other trousers in West Aceh will now face sharia police, as will clothes vendors selling slacks for women.

West Aceh Regent Ramli M.S. issued the controversial regulation on Tuesday.

Those found wearing tight trousers, such as jeans, will have them cut by sharia police, and will be forced to wear loose-fitting attire.

"We have issued the regulation to further enforce Islamic sharia granted by the central government," Ramli told The Jakarta Post by phone on Tuesday.

To anticipate the huge number of slacks to be cut by police during raids, the West Aceh regency administration has prepared around 7,000 long skirts, which will be provided for free to those caught wearing trousers. More...

Unmarried Indonesian couples banned from riding motorbikes as it 'could lead to sinful acts'

A district in Indonesia's Aceh has banned unmarried men and women from riding together on motorbikes, a lawmaker said Monday, amid fears that the practice "could lead to sinful acts".

In the latest new Islamic regulation in the conservative province, MPs in North Aceh district last week approved the regulation, which will come into effect in a year.

Lawmaker Fauzan Hamzah said authorities were making "efforts to implement sharia law fully".

"Unmarried people sitting closely together on a motorcycle is clearly against Islamic sharia as it could lead to sinful acts," Mr Hamzah told AFP.

Aceh, on the northern tip of Sumatra island, is the only province in the world's most populous Muslim-majority country that is allowed to implement Islamic law, and gay sex, gambling and drinking alcohol are already punishable by caning. Full story...

Muslim woman is caned 23 times in Indonesia for 'standing too close to her boyfriend'

Heart-wrenching images show a screaming young woman flogged in front of a jeering crowd for breaking Islamic laws as floggings reportedly spike in Indonesian province.

An unidentified woman screamed out in pain as she was caned 23 times in Indonesia's Aceh for breaking the province's strict Islamic law forbidding intimacy between unmarried couples.

Aceh is the only province in Indonesia that enforces sharia law and people face floggings for a range of offences, including gambling, drinking alcohol and gay sex.

She was one of 13 people - aged between 21-30 - to be flogged on Monday at a mosque.

The woman was allegedly caught standing too close to her boyfriend. Full story...

No more tight clothing for women in Indonesia's Aceh...

Authorities in a devoutly Islamic district of Indonesia's Aceh province have distributed 20,000 long skirts and prohibited shops from selling tight dresses as a regulation banning Muslim women from wearing revealing clothing took effect Thursday.

The long skirts are to be given to Muslim women caught violating the dress code during a two-month campaign to enforce the regulation, said Ramli Mansur, head of West Aceh district.

Islamic police will determine whether a woman's clothing violates the dress code, he said.

During raids Thursday, Islamic police caught 18 women traveling on motorbikes who were wearing traditional headscarves but were also dressed in jeans. Each woman was given a long skirt and her pants were confiscated. They were released from police custody after giving their identities and receiving advice from Islamic preachers. More...

'A vigilante state': Aceh's citizens take sharia law into their own hands...

Everyone in the village saw it, either in the flesh or later when it was immortalised on YouTube. Local children even stuck their heads through the grates of a fence to watch, their attention trained on the spectacle in front of them: a young couple being doused in sewage.

Humiliated but compliant, the couple sat on the edge of a well in Kayee Lee, a village in the Indonesian province of Aceh, as the liquid ran off them in thick black streams.
By the time Roswati arrived at the scene, about 70 people had gathered to watch her son and his girlfriend being publicly shamed in the courtyard of the mosque, the village equivalent of the public square.
“They were standing there looking at them like thieves,” says Roswati of the local youths involved. “I asked them, ‘Why did you do this,’ and they said, ‘Wait till we burn your house down.’” Full story...

Indonesian Sharia police separate Aceh lesbian couple...

Islamic police in the Indonesian province of Aceh have forced two women to have their marriage annulled and sign an agreement to separate.

The women had been legally married for a few months after one of them passed as a man in front of an Islamic cleric who presided over their wedding.

But suspicious neighbours confronted the couple and reported them to police.

The two women are now back with their families, forcibly separated and under surveillance by the Islamic police. More...

Miss Indonesia provokes anger in her native province, Aceh...

Clerics in Indonesia's conservative Muslim province of Aceh say they are outraged that an Acehnese woman has won the title of Miss Indonesia.

Qori Sandioriva, 18, won the Miss Indonesia title on Friday, beating 37 other contestants for the crown.

The clerics say that by failing to wear a veil during the competition she has betrayed her Acehnese roots and brought shame to the province.

Aceh has special autonomy in Indonesia and has implemented partial Sharia law.

It is the only province in Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim country, that follows these laws. More...

Indonesian punks detained and shaved by police...

Police in Indonesia's most conservative province have stripped away body piercings and shaved off mohicans from 65 youths detained at a punk-rock concert because of their perceived threat to Islamic values.

The teens and young men were also stripped of dog-collar necklaces and chains and then thrown in pools of water for "spiritual" cleansing, the local police chief, Iskandar Hasan, said on Wednesday.

After replacing their "disgusting" clothes, he handed each a toothbrush and barked: "Use it."

It was the latest effort by authorities to promote strict moral values in Aceh, the only province in this secular but predominantly Muslim nation of 240 million people to have imposed Islamic laws. Full story...

Indonesia's Islamic laws are 'abusive', report says...

Two Islamic laws applied in the Indonesian province of Aceh violate people's rights and are implemented abusively, Human Rights Watch says.

Encouraging the community to enforce Sharia laws resulted in arbitrary arrests, abuses and torture, HRW says.

In one incident, an unmarried couple were dragged into the streets by a crowd and assaulted. More...

Aceh in Indonesia passes law that allows stoning of adulterers...

A NEW law in Indonesia's devoutly Islamic Aceh province makes adultery punishable by stoning to death.

Bahrom Rasjid, one of the law's drafters and a member of parliament, says the bill was passed unanimously Monday by the regional house of representatives. It will take effect within 30 days.

The law imposes severe sentences for other behavior considered morally unacceptable, including homosexuality, which will be punishable by up to eight years in prison.

Human rights groups and members of the local government have strongly opposed the law, saying more debate is needed because it imposes capital punishment.

Aceh, where Islam arrived from Saudi Arabia centuries ago, enjoys semiautonomy from the central government.

Indonesia: Court 'acquits Playboy editor Erwin Arnada'

Indonesia's Supreme Court has acquitted Playboy editor Erwin Arnada of distributing and profiting from indecent pictures, his lawyer said.

Todung Mulya Lubis told BBC Indonesian that Mr Erwin was now a free man.

"We ourselves have not received a copy of its decision, but the Supreme Court said the verdict had been issued and an application is granted," he said.

The magazine contained no nudity and critics argued the trial highlighted the growing power of Islamist groups. More...

Aceh thief wants longer prison term!!!

A man jailed for eight months on Wednesday by a district court in Aceh for attempted burglary is seeking a longer stretch behind bars because he has found life in jail to be much better than life outside.

The judges could hardly believe what they were hearing when Supriyadi, 20, who has been detained since he was arrested three months ago, said upon the pronouncement of his verdict that he would appeal for a longer prison term because he found life in jail very comfortable.

“In jail, I get free meals,” the convict told reporters as he was whisked to a car to take him back to his cell. “This morning, they served rice with egg-plant soup and tempeh for breakfast.”

Supriyadi was charged with breaking into his neighbor’s home in late-2012. Unfortunately for Supriyadi, the owner of the house woke up and screamed for help before he managed to steal anything. Prosecutors had sought a one-year prison sentence. Full story...

The former editor of Indonesian Playboy, Erwin Arnada, has been arrested on the island of Bali.

Police had been looking for Mr Arnada, who ignored orders to surrender after being sentenced to two years in jail for indecency in August.

He had first been tried in 2007 and cleared of all charges.

Women in Surabaya defy fatwa on hairstyles, taxi-driving...

Muslim women in Surabaya, East Java, have flatly rejected a fatwa recently issued by local clerics, who said women changing the color and form of their hair using the rebonding technique is haram (forbidden under Islam).

“Hair coloring and straightening are just a matter of fashion, and have nothing to do with one’s level faith,” university student Ulfa Damayanti, 19, told The Jakarta Post on the weekend, after undergoing a rebonding treatment at a stylist in Surabaya.

Ulfa said she would continue visiting the hair stylist every three months, to have her hair done, something she has been doing for the last five years. More...

Islam needs a sexual revolution, says Turkish writer...

My use of the term is based on Wilhelm Reich and his book about the sexual revolution. I believe that the Islamic world must grapple with the consequences of rigid sexual morals, not unlike the way, as he describes, the Soviet Union dealt with its own circumstances. It must pursue the path of change, just as any totalitarian system must do when it wants to become a democratic society. Part of the process is that sexuality has to be recognized as something that every individual determines for himself or herself. Institutions like moral and religious police must be abolished. People who have sex before marriage cannot be punished or ostracized by society. Parents must be confronted with the question of why they do not allow their 16-year-old daughter to have a boyfriend, while their sons can brag about how many girlfriends they have. Full story...

Christian churches in Indonesia province to be closed over Muslim groups’ pressure...

Authorities in an Indonesian province in Northern Sumatra have decided to shut down several Christian churches just days after a church was burned down by a mob and clashes between Christian and Muslims broke out.

Local government in the conservative Aceh province, which has a Muslim majority, ordered 10 Christian churches to be closed down next week after a group of hardline Muslims demanded that they be shut, deeming the houses of worship to be illegal.

“Ten churches have been identified as not having proper permits and should be closed,” said Hambali Sinaga, head of the local chapter of the hardline group Islamic Defenders Front, as quoted by Reuters.

He also urged that local authorities implement the measures until Monday and expressed hope that “there will be no violence again tomorrow," referring to recent clashes in the province. Full story...

Japan’s retirees turn to crime for a better life in prison...

Japan’s prison system is being driven to budgetary crisis by demographics, a welfare shortfall and a new, pernicious breed of villain: The recidivist retiree. And the silver-haired crooks, say academics, are desperate to be behind bars.

Crime figures show about 35 per cent of shoplifting offences are committed by people over 60. Within that age bracket, 40 per cent of repeat offenders have committed the same crime more than six times.

There is good reason, concludes a report, to suspect the shoplifting crime wave, in particular, represents an attempt by those convicted to end up in prison — an institution with free food, accommodation and healthcare.

The mathematics of recidivism are gloomily compelling for the would-be convict. Even with a frugal diet and dirt-cheap accommodation, a single Japanese retiree with minimal savings has living costs more than 25 per cent higher than the meagre basic state pension of ¥780,000 (S$9,415) a year, according to a study on the economics of elderly crime by Mr Michael Newman of Tokyo-based research house Custom Products Research. In Barangay Ayala Alabang in Muntinlupa City, people will need a prescription to buy a condom.

The Sanggunian Barangay of Ayala Alabang released an ordinance that takes effect on February 24, 2011 that seeks, among others, to penalize the sale and purchase of "anti-conceptional substance or devices," like condoms and contraceptive pills, without a prescription.

The ordinance requires health services performed within the territorial jurisdiction of Barangay Ayala Alabang to use only "safe, ethical, effective, legal and non-abortifacient medicines or drugs or machines, devices or methods of treatment that do not cause abortion intentionally or unintentionally." Miss Indonesia admits to being part of religious, sex cult...

The grimace-smiles through which Miss World contestants usually force out their platitudes about helping the little children of the planet will have a more sinister resonance when the pageant gets under way at the Gallagher Convention Centre
on Saturday.

One of the contestants belongs to an organisation directly linked to an American religious cult with a litany of child and sexual abuse scandals clouding its past.

Following her national coronation, Miss Indonesia, 23-year-old Kerenina Sunny Halim, admitted to the Jakarta Globe that she is a member of The Family International, a “non-governmental-organisation” for which she did humanitarian work in Aceh after the Asian tsunami in 2004. Halim, whose American mother and Indonesian father were members, was born into the organisation. More...
