A 52-year-old man who was seeking asylum in Sweden has been deported to the wrong country, after his application was rejected by govenment officials. Instead of sending him back to Iran he was mistakenly deported to neighboring Iraq.
Sweden's news, The Local, reports after the Iranian man lost his bid to for refugee status, police took him from a Migration Board, Migrationsverket, holding facility in Gävle in eastern Sweden to the airport, and placed him on a plane bound for Baghdad, Iraq.
The man’s Swedish lawyer told the newspaper that his client was originally part of the Feili Kurd community in Iraq. He was kicked out of Iraq in the early 1980s during a mass expulsion of Feili Kurds by former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, who accused them of being Iranian and stripped them of their citizenship. He is reported to have relocated to Iran, where he fled government prosecution in 2002. Full story...
