Head of 'French MI5' under investigation for spying on journalist...

The head of France’s secret service has been placed under investigation for illegally spying on a journalist.

Bernard Squarcini, head of France's Direction Central du Renseignement Interieur, its domestic intelligence agency, faces charges of breaking press freedom laws a year ago by obtaining records of a Le Monde reporter’s calls in order to unmask a government mole.

The details included journalist Gérard Davet’s GPS locations.

The alleged aim was to uncover the reporter’s source on a story about the Bettencourt affair - the family saga which exploded into an illegal party-funding scandal that severely tainted the French Right.  Full story...
