E-book enthusiasts could soon be able to rent their favourite titles online after internet retailer Amazon opened talks with a major publishers to launch a virtual library.
The company is hoping to cash in on the rise of digital book sales, coupled with the possible closure of thousands of libraries across the country due to cuts in council budget.
Customers would pay an annual fee to Amazon - the maker of the popular Kindle e-reader - to access the virtual library, though an exact cost has not been decided.
Similar services for renting films over the internet, such as the website Netflix, have proved popular and digital book sales were up 20 per cent last year to £180 million. Full story...
