Which EU nation most resembles us in temperament? Sometimes I think it’s Denmark, and sometimes I wonder whether, if the inhabitants of Lower Saxony constituted a state on their own, they might edge it. At the moment, though, having just passed through the land of polders and greenhouses, I’m plumping for the Dutch. In Tolkienian terms, they are the Nandor: those who refused the crossing.
