EVERYONE who has held office that dealt with the world's worst industrial disaster in the city of Bhopal 26 years ago stands guilty. It is a collective culpability. It is a shame that there is no collective punishment.
On that fateful night of Dec 2 and 3, 1984, huge quantities of stored toxic methyl isocyanate gas leaked from a factory belonging to the Indian subsidiary of Union Carbide Corporation (UCC), a US multinational, located on the outskirts of Bhopal.
The 3,000-plus immediate deaths and tens of thousands disabled were only the initial part of a heart-rending tragedy that continues to take its toll to this day. Thousands more have died from long- term illnesses. More...
