Internet-inspired drinks parties spread panic among authorities in France...

The “apéros géants” first appeared in Brittany at the end of last year, with 3000 people gathering in a public square in Nantes after an invitation circulated on Facebook. Further events attracted even bigger numbers in Rennes and Brest, and the phenomenon is now nationwide. Organisers hope to create the biggest “happening” yet beneath the Eiffel Tower next Sunday.

However, what began as an exercise in unconventional conviviality showed its darker side on Wednesday night when at a large gathering in Nantes a 21-year-old man fell to his death from a bridge.
