Thousands of Indians in prisons world-wide, especially in Middle East...

Sure , there has been a dramatic surge in the number of new passports issued. The globetrotting Indian now holidays in the Arctic, goes to Moldova for a degree and sets up business in Cape Town. But for every desi adventurer who improves his prospects overseas, there may be another wasting away in a jail far from home.

Contrary to what one might believe, Pakistan does not even hold the largest number of Indians in its jails. Saudi Arabia, which has one of the most horrific prison systems in the world with public beheadings and closed-door trials, does. It is a country where foreign missions are not informed before their citizens are put to death, and the death penalty applies to a wide range of nonviolent crimes such as apostasy and witchcraft , sexual offences, acts deemed to amount to “corruption on earth” and drug dealing. A total of 1,359 Indians are currently jailed in Saudi Arabia on various charges including “sexual and immoral acts” .

Indeed it is in the Gulf countries, with its dictatorial regimes and poor human rights record, that most Indians lose their freedom . Immigrants there work and live at the mercy of their local “sponsors” and find themselves locked up at the slightest provocation . Sulaiman Abubakker (53), a driver from Kerala who left for Saudi Arabia in January 2008, discovered this the hard way. A car crashed into his parked truck, killing six Saudi nationals, and Sulaiman was arrested and sent to jail. A court imposed a fine of Rs 70 lakh for his release; an amount Sulaiman cannot even dream of coughing up, which is why he continues to be in jail. Full story...
