China and India have the most students studying abroad...

As the debate on reforms in Indian higher education rages, the Global Education Digest 2009 compiled by Unesco has thrown up a noteworthy finding: after China, India is the No. 2 country in the world to send the highest number of students pursuing higher education away from home.

Surprisingly, for Indian students, US is no longer the hot destination. Earlier, over 71% students were based in the US, 8% in the UK and 7.6% in Australia. But from 1999 to 2009 (the 10-year Unesco study period), the absolute number of Indian mobile students has trebled, while the proportion of students going to the US is down to 56%.
